Popped in last nice before our play. Decided to eat in the lounge. We ordered a $16 pizza to share, wings and a 4 taco platter. The pizza was completely tasteless, I thought Brazilian food was supposed to be flavorful. I actually asked for a salt shaker. The wings were ok, but tiny snd mostly skin. The tacos were inedible. The meat tasted like sawdust it was so dry and tasted burnt. It looked even worse. The waitress took it off our bill when she saw we didn't eat it. I am not a picky eater, never send stuff back. I want to start off by saying, my review may come off a little biased. This is because I'm from Toronto, and we have Copacabana (AYCE Steak) which set the bar pretty high for me. In Winnipeg, a lot of locals and colleagues recommended this Brazilian BBQ restaurant to us. We went in with such high expectations... probably not the best idea. When we walked in, I could already feel the atmosphere was far more different than Copacabana in Toronto. It is more family oriented and slow-paced, where in Toronto Copa is fast paced with live entertainment. I am so used to seeing several servers on the floor going around, instead Carnival had max 3 servers. I'm not too sure if it was due to under staff that day, but it really affected our experience. First things first, our server was quite friendly and informed us about how the menu works. After a few minutes with the menu, we were ready to order some sides as we wait for the servers to come around. It took some time to get our waitress to the table. Then we mentioned my boyfriends nut allergy and waited to hear back that our order was in the clear. That too also took some time, while we still haven't received meat from the servers. The downfall of the 3 servers is that most of the time we spent waiting, and when they would come around, they wouldn't have any left by the time they got to our table. It was quite disappointing. From this point on, we just stopped enjoying ourselves. The sides that cake were not what we were expecting: (Get the salads) - Risotto tasted rotten (could be due to the amount of blue cheese and wine) - Mashed potatoes were watery - Cheese bread was tough to bite into There were some good meats such as lamb, ribs and sirloin steak. Everything else didn't really amaze us, again Copacabana really did set the bar high. We went for the experience, to see what Winnipeg had to offer. I was expecting to have a Brazilian experience and the restaurant did not delivered that (I am Brazilian). The meat was served all well cooked (I asked for medium rare and I was told 'we don't have it, you will have to eat well cooked'), the waiter served 6 types of meat in literally 4 minutes, we felt in a rush to eat, the sides were so so. The restaurant is not cheap at all, I paid $170 (for 2), wasted my money. Prompts to the waitress though. I have never been there before. I went there with a group of my friends. 2 of my friends got the all you can eat and myself and another of my friends got the sliced picanha, when we got our food, my friends steak (if you can even call it that it was like a piece of cardboard) was cold and mine was over cooked and cold as well I mentioned it to our server there was no apologies were given all she said was ill ask the kitchen then came back with her manager. The manager seemed inconvenienced that we were saying that our food was cold and the meat was over cooked again no apology was given he took my plate and I waited another 25 min for a replacement which came out lukewarm and gray. Now let me start by saying that I don't eat red meat and if you want to disqualify my review for that reason alone then I understand. I have been to Brazilian BBQ places before and have never minded paying $50 to $60 to just eat my weight in chicken and pineapple. These guys have very good chicken. It's excellent even. The pineapple isn't great (pretty stringy). The real disappointment here is how long I had to wait in between servings of food I could eat while watching an endless meat parade. I've never been to a Brazilian BBQ so I have nothing to compare Carnaval. I've heard of the concept and was very excited for Winnipeg to have it's own version. The main dining room is huge, might seat close to a 100? And the main floor has a lounge area that's more quiet and serves up tapas. For dinner, it's $39 for adults, $19 kids under 12 and $28 for vegetarians. They also serve lunch for $22 for adults. For a dinner for an adult, the $39 includes unlimited side dishes and all the seasoned meats you can eat (beef, lamb, pork, chicken, sausage) but drinks and dessert are extra. I would suggest this place for meat eaters especially those who enjoy red meat. It's hard to keep track of the 14 meats that come out but I would say that 70% of the time, it was beef. I was there for close to 2 hours but I can definitely say that not all the meat items on the menu were offered. The server explains to you the process right away - leave your card (which looks like a drink coaster) on the green side to signal to the gaucho (carvers) to come by your table and flip over to the red side if you want a break. This is not the place for an intimate date because the gauchos come by pretty frequently which can be a bit distracting unless you are diligent about flipping your card back and forth. They bring you some sides right away along with some bread - obviously pace yourself. But the sides are surprisingly good - I suggest getting some light tangy salads to help cleanse your palate between all the meat you'll be eating like the heart of palm salad and the wild rice and bean salad. Definitely get the hot sauces - habanero / jalapeno - the habanero one is spicy and yum! Most of the meats were cooked to medium rare and tend to lean towards the more seasoned end of the spectrum with some items tasting quite salty. Apparently you can request for some more customization - something I didn't know cause if I did, I would ask for less seasoning as I was downing water like crazy. That being said, medium rare beef is great. I was surprised at the quality of the meats - it's not amazing but definitely above average. Best items: Picanha (sirloin cap), Fraldinha (bottom sirloin), bacon wrapped tenderloin, chicken drum sticks, chicken/bacon and the leg of lamb. The chicken was super tender & juicy. The leg of lamb was very tender and perfectly seasoned. And all the bacon wrapped stuff were good. Oh and try to get some of the grilled pineapple that's sprinkled with cinnamon (a refreshing palate cleanser as well). The gauchos were all very friendly and fun to talk to. Service was great considering it was their opening weekend! I wouldn't recommend this to a vegetarian - first of all, why would you want to come to a place that parades meat around constantly. Also, for $28, you're really eating the sides dishes only so I think your $28 could buy you a better meal elsewhere. This is a meatatarian place for sure. Also, I wouldn't bring young kids here because the items aren't likely going to appeal to them. All in all, this is a fun place to dine at and stuff yourself silly! The vibe is loud and busy...make sure you make reservations. A word of warning, this place features a large wood coal burning BBQ that's in the middle of the very large room. Fantastic meats from chicken to RIb eye, to sausages to beef. You will like it here if you are a big fan of meats, not so much if you are not. Go easy on the sides of fries and rice as they fill you up quick and take your time eating the meats. Cinnamon pineapple has a nice refreshing taste. Salad goes well with the meats and the staff are pretty good and attentive although may be little slow if on a busy night. it is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for, tiny bit salty some of the meats, but tasty. If you've never experienced a Brazilian BBQ, you're missing out! We had a fantastic meal and a wonderful time. Patrons were welcomed at the door by a Brazilian Samba dancer in full costume. She showed me a few dance steps while I waited to be taken to our table. The lounge was just off to the left of the entrance doors and the restaurant was on the second floor. As I entered the dining area, I could smell the strong aroma of smoky BBQ. The waitress told us the wood coal burning BBQ was shipped from Brazil to ensure its authenticity, providing the rich smoky flavour. We had a great table by the window, overlooking Waterfront Drive. The meal is an all-you-can-eat style for a set price. This comes with a variety of sides as well as grilled meats. The service was amazing. While we looked over the large selection of wines, many of which are only available here (or perhaps the other restaurants owned by Noel Bernier, namely Hermanos & Corrientes Argentinean Pizzeria), we were served a black bean stew with pork and beef, called Feijoada, and a bread platter including pita wedges with dip, cheese filled rolls, and meat stuffed pastries. We selected a bottle of red wine from Uraguay, a Tempranillo Tannat, recommended also by another patron. It was wonderful! Then the feast began... we flipped our cards from red to green, indicating to the "gauchos" that we were ready for meats to be served. They moved around, table-to-table, offering a variety of meats on skewers, grilled cheese and grilled pineapple, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. If we wanted it, he/she would cut a piece from the skewer while we held onto it with our tongs to place on our dinner plate. Our server checked on us regularly, asking which meats we were waiting to try and before we finished the meat on our plates, those options were offered to us! We also tried a few more of the sides including chickpea salad, potato salad (called Maionaisse) and Cuban rice and beans (called Arroz Cubano). The portion sizes were enough for 4 people. Between all of the sides and the meats coming quicker than we could eat them, we had to turn our cards to red. There was not a moment we were without food! It was all so delicious too, I just wished I had more room in my belly. My favourites included the bacon wrapped chicken and bacon wrapped tenderloin, pork sausage, sirloin cap and top sirloin... and I'm not generally a fan of red meat. It was tender and so flavourful! As for the sides, I could have made a meal of the pita wedges with dip. While this is not a cheap meal, it is worth every penny and we'll definitely be back again. After a few complimentary tasty appetizers decided to turn my coaster GREEN and began a 1.5 hour attempt at protein overload. Went here with a family group for a birthday celebration. We had a reso for 7-9 (you can only have a table for 2 hours according to website) but we stayed until 9:30 since they closed at 10 (or 11??) anyways. Service was MEH. Not even sure why they bother to have waitresses since the guys brought around the meat and random people were bringing our sides and drinks. We would order drinks, get them, and the waitress would be like "Your drinks should be here soon!" Kind of annoying, as a waitress, I know that she should be watching us better plus 18% gratuity. I hope she tips out to the bartenders/runners/guachos because they did all her work. Anyways, I had the vege option (39$). I got a bowl of orzo pasta that was cooked risotto style. It had charred, I mean, "grilled", eggplant and zucchini and then was loaded down with halved cherry tomatoes. Flavour wasn't really there, eggplant skin was burnt to a crisp so there was an unpleasant texture. Overall not at all worth 39$. It was a sad attempt to appease vegetarians. My boyfriend had the meat. He said it was okay but wasn't wow-ed by anything. Chipotle suasage had nice flavour, steaks were all very salty, chicken was the only really moist option. We also had some sides; kale salad (didn't try as it has bacon), mashed potatoes with garlic (idunno, you can make that at home, here's the recipe: mashed potatoes and garlic), chickpea salad (meh, again recipe: can of chickpeas), heart of palm salad (with small soggy pieces of heart of palm), frites (which were actually very nice), and bread with butter. For dessert we only had the pineapple with cinnamon. The pieces we received were not caramelized, so the flavour wasn't as intense as it could've been. Tasted like microwaved pineapple with cinnamon dusted on top; no real smokey flavour, just cinnamon-y. To drink I had the Hibiscus Mojito. It was really nice, light, slightly sweet, and didn't taste overwhelmingly of alcohol. I would try more drinks if I went back (I was driving that evening). Bill was well over 300$ and I don't think we ate that much, mostly alcohol. I do not recommend at all if you don't eat meat!!!! This is a relatively decent restaurant. The issue that I have has to do with their very poor communication and customer service. A friend went in off the street to take a look at the menu as he was planning a birthday for his partner. The restaurant didn't tell him that there was a totally different menu on the second floor and that you can't order off the menu he saw if you are on the second floor. He then phoned to reserve for 30 people. He wasn't told then that that many people have to sit upstairs. When everyone arrived he was shocked to find out that the only option was to order off the 2nd floor menu. Which was very very expensive. I like this place more then I should really lol. I have to admit that at times yes the meat is a little tuff depending if your there much later in the evening or if they had already made a trip out with specific skewer. But I see a lot of comments that its salty? I think that if you like Brazilian BBQ and have knowledge of there styles of cooking ingredient/foods they make then you would know that's how it is. They use a seasoned salt rub on plenty of cuts of meats its a standard. So for those that may not like salt rubs as much I would recommend sticking to chicken sausages ribs wings and pork but don't be afraid to ask for the cuts of beef that have the marinade which isn't salty. read more

We went to Carnaval last night and I must say that it has landed a spot on my list of worst food experiences EVER. I'll list my reasons below and let you be the judge: 1. We ordered some sides (2-3 per server recommendation) and were surprised to realize that the size of our sides for a table of 2 was the same as the size for the table of 6 next to us = waste of food and less room to try other items on the menu 2. The cheese balls were so dry and chewy. the texture was as if someone had microwaved a blob of cheese then waited for it to dry on the kitchen counter overnight then served it on the plates of the poor souls dining at this establishment 3. Our server said that the meat was available in rare, med rare, well done. However, we found that about 90% of the meat was BEYOND well done and almost like beef jerky....The one cut that was med rare was so salty we could not eat it There were however, a few good things: - the fried cassava root was crispy and delicious - the chicken thighs were juicy but nothing you couldn't get at your closest Swiss Chalet Overall, this was a disappointing experience and has ruined Brazilian grills for me read more

This place was a lot of fun and the food was great. However, I was with a group of about 8 people and there was an automatic gratuity fee of 18% which I think is insane. It also seemed that once the waitress knew we were a semi-large group, she didn't even bother to serve us. Many of us didn't get water refills and a friend of mine got the wrong drink twice. It felt ridiculous to have to pay such a large tip when the service was so bad. I would go back, but go with a smaller group to avoid this again. We shouldn't have to pay extra because the management won't pay their staff decent wages. Another suggestion is to make the side dishes (salad, fries, etc) as an option. If you are going to try Carnaval prepare yourself. You are going to want to try all the different meats they offer and eat some more than once. My wife and I decided to skip lunch that day and I'm so glad that we did! If we hadn't I don't think we would of got our money's worth. And it's a good bit of money. For dinner it was around $70 a person (including tip). The staff there is incredible nice and the restaurant itself was beautiful and fun all at the same time. Only thing I would say negatively about Carnaval is that the sides took a little while to come out. But it didn't hinder the experience much if any. The tri tip steak was my favorite! Having tried Brazilian BBQ on a trip to Vegas, we were super excited to hear that we would have a restaurant like that in Winnipeg. We decided to go to the restaurant for our Anniversary and I am sad to say it was disappointing. We had such high hopes for the place. The service was great with very friendly staff. They brought our sides quickly and there always seemed to be someone close with a steaming skewer of meat close by, ready to offer us some. Sadly, the meat was mostly overcooked, and we had to make a point of asking if they had any on the rare to medium side. They were only able to oblige once in our request. We even had a couple slices of meat that had a 'livery' taste, and that is a huge turn off for both me and my husband. We left the restaurant a little let down, that our anniversary dinner wasn't all we'd hoped but it was the next day we really paid. Although we both agreed the meat was seasoned a bit on the salty side, we didn't realize how bad until the following day when we were both sick - You know that sick feeling you get when you consume too much salt, or MSG? We both felt that hungover, thirsty, nauseous feeling for the entire day. Leaving the building, we both thought we'd try the lounge with tapas next time, to give the restaurant with such promise another try..but after waking up and feeling that sick, we decided not to. We went with friends for a special occasion. The greeting was warm and professional. The staff in general was very friendly and correct. We had a window table, which I always appreciate, close to the grill. I have to say, the smell of good meat gets me. We ordered our side dishes and drinks. Our wine had the exact temperature and the sides were delicious. But I have to admit because of the awesome food the servers brought on the skewers, I nearly forgot to eat the side dishes. And on top this cinnamon pineapple. I normally don't eat too much, but I was very full at the end. The dessert at the end was ok. Went there on Monday Aug 25. Was seated and had a server take our drink order. The adult drinks came in about 15 minutes while my 8 year old drink came 5 minutes after that. The sides were ordered after we got our first taste of meat. The mashed potatoes tasted like the powdered boxed type. Caeser salad had way too much dressing for the one person size. The kale and broccoli salad was bland. The meat was coming in droves. Every 3 minutes we had someone at our table with a different meat. Don't get me wrong, I love my red meat but this was overkill in many different ways. Being a Monday night, the place was slow so I understood why the guys were at our table so quickly. All the beef cuts had the same spices rubbed into them. Even with different cuts, they all started tasting the same. If you like your meat medium rare? Don't bother going to Caranaval. In the hour and a half we were seated. Our server came to our table 2 times to take one more drink order and take away our plates. That is unacceptable to me. i still tipped them well because the guys who cut the meat were great. I hope they didn't give her a dime of it. Our previous lunch visit was 3 years ago , and at that time, we would have rated the staff, ambience and food quality five stars. Having arrived in Winnipeg, we were so looking forward to once again having lunch at this restaurant again. We came to the restaurant on a Tuesday, but were disappointed to find that only the lounge was open for lunch, and that the restaurant is open for lunch only on Thursdays and Fridays. We came back on Thursday for lunch. Parking was difficult, however we were fortunate to find a spot in a lot across the street. We were delighted to see that the ambience and staff were top notch as per our previous visit three years earlier. Sadly, our enthusiasm ended once the meats from the skewers started arriving. The first to be served was chicken drumsticks, which was dried out and leathery. After a few bites, it was relegated to the side of the plate. The chicken was not edible. Next to arrive were the 3 side dishes, which were fabulous, especially the french fries! Unfortunately, as the rest of the meats were served, our disappointment deepened. All of the rest of the meats were dried out and flavourless. Although the serving staff apologized and promised to pass on our comments of the poor food quality to the chef and management, we will not be returning to this restaurant. read more
