I would strongly caution anyone against using CarMax, especially if you are buying online and expecting a smooth process! This week I witnessed my boyfriend have a HORRIBLE experience here. After waiting two weeks for a car to arrive, he spent two full days trying to pick it up, only to leave empty-handed due to "system errors." He waited two weeks for a car to be shipped, only for the "pickup" to turn into a multi-day disaster. And I promise, I'm not being dramatic ... Day 1: He spent hours at the dealership, only to be told at the end of the day that their system crashed and he couldn't take the car. He was understanding and rescheduled his work clients and a couple other appointments to return the next day. Day 2: Despite a sales rep promising him everything was "good to go," he arrived to find the system had locked him out due to a verification error. Instead of fixing it, the manager was completely lackadaisical, showing zero sense of urgency or hustle. Once my boyfriend finally had enough and asked for his cash down payment back, they told him the cash register was "locked" and tried to say they'd mail a check he'll receive in the next two weeks! It feels incredibly shady to hold onto his money for a deal they couldn't even fulfill... As of today, we are still trying to figure out if he's actually going to get a cash refund or not. The fact that he has to chase them down just to get his own money back for a car he doesn't even have is ridiculous. For a company that prides itself on being a "modern" way to buy a car, this was an archaic, disorganized, and disheartening experience. I've always loved the idea of coming here instead of a traditional car dealership. Back in the day I purchased a Honda CR-V here (different branch) and it was, just as they say, hassle free. My spouse, too, loves the fact that you don't have to haggle, don't have to deal with "sales" b/s - just pick what you want, like the price?, then get it. In this case, we were selling a car. That is also easy in/easy out. My spouse went in for an estimate a few days prior and then we took the car in to sell after that. Took maybe an hour total for BOTH appointments. How is it possible for a car to last *just long enough* that it makes it past the warranty threshold? I'm not convinced the cars they sell are thoroughly checked, and I was rushed out of the door upon purchasing. They left the tracker in the car (meaning I had to drive back after already leaving the lot) and I also had to ask them to top off the gas, since they forgot that too. I'm now out of a car less than 4 months after purchasing from here, because they won't help me since I don't have MaxCare. This store screams 100% NEGATIVE EQUITY FOR YOUR FUTURE !!!! I cannot endorse this store due to the company's lack of transparency and disregard for Washington state laws. Many of their vehicles have underlying issues that may not last beyond a few years, yet they will attempt to sell them as long-term investments. When I raised my concerns, a salesman dismissed them by stating, "well, they are used cars." Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, the formula used to conceal cracks in the glass deteriorated, exposing a significant crack, and my catalytic converter failed within the first few weeks. Although they repaired that issue, I remain uncertain about any other potential problems with the car. read more

TL/DR don't trust if they give you a guarantee "in writing" (which pretty much means, how can you trust them at all?) Recently bought my 2nd car at Carmax, Renton. Probably won't buy a third... I test drove a car I was looking to purchase. There was an issue where the seatbelts were dirty and I asked about that. The floor manager said they'd get it taken care of. Before I came in the next day to pick up the car, the manager told me that they had cleaned them but that he was going to have the seatbelts professionally detailed and a loaner car offered to me while that happened. He also said I would have that in writing. I didn't ask for that, but given how much I was spending on this car, I appreciated the extra touch of customer service. When I picked up the car and the paperwork, sure enough, it included a service order, signed by the floor manager, to have the seatbelts detailed and a loaner provided. I was told the service department would be contacting me to schedule. I received no such call, and about a week later I called the service department. The service department manager told me that they would NOT honor that service order because they had already cleaned the seatbelts to "their standards" and that they had no loaner they could give me. He said he would allow me to go find a place on my own to have the seatbelts detailed and reimburse me up to $250, but at that point, I was pretty much done. He said that the floor manager should never have provided me such a guarantee. Bottom line, I don't know whether the floor manager or the service manager was in the wrong, but when you have a company that offers you something IN WRITING and then reneges on that promise, it's probably not a company worth your business. read more

Like any other carmax this carmax will beg you to buy a car, threaten to sell the car to someone else and when you try to go purchase the car they send you through a loop hole, the down payment changed 6 different times, they didn't like how we set everything up on our carmax account so we are approved and ready to buy the car, literally set everything up on our carmax account and made sure our trade in was ready and approved and set so we could just go in and sign paperwork and they just send up through so many loopholes, they didn't like that it was a screenshot, they didn't like that it was a pdf sent to them and then you want us to feel comfortable to login to our personal accounts on your computer just for it to probably work, i don't believe that's how it works when you go buy a car, you normally plug in numbers from the information either A on your account that you put information in or B through pdf files, paperwork or screenshots. They clearly don't want to make the sale nor help you sell a car, if you're ever going to buy a car i recommend taking your time and doing research into A GOOD DEALERSHIP and get a car through them not wasting your time at fucking carmax. i recommend go to Honda automation literally right next door they will help you sell and car. I've NEVER experienced the likes of this place. My thinking was that the buying over the internet process was to make it less painful than going into a traditional lot........NOT!! I had cash in my pocket and was ready to buy. I couldn't get anyone to take the time to sell me the $40k used truck I had test drove and decided on. There is process after process just to test drive and then you must make an appointment to buy it. When I showed up to my appointment I was told that they would tell me in 20 minutes how long I would have to wait. After waiting 48 hours I gave up and found a truck at my neighborhood dealer. The people helping me were amazing and very patient with me and always answered my questions if I ever had any and we're explaining things well enough for me to understand! I was able to look at different cars and 24hour test drive this car I knew I fell in love with right away! Honestly it was pretty stressful but it wasn't because of CarMax but rather my bank. In the end everything went great, my car loan is being sent in a few days guaranteed but they were able to still let me take my car home! The transaction was refreshingly pleasant! The offer they made on my vehicle was thousands, yes, thousands of dollars more than offers from 2 other dealerships. The vehicle I wanted from their inventory was not on their lot so they shipped it from Spokane. Larry, the salesperson, said it could take up to 14 days to arrive and be ready for a test drive. It actually arrived less than 72 hours later! I dreaded the thought of purchasing from a traditional dealership because of painful life sucking, hoonswaggling experiences I have had with them in past. At Carmax from beginning to end was a straightforward experience. The transparency alone raises the bar when it comes to car sales. The salesperson, Larry, was helpful and very nice. The only issue here is the salespeople may not be very well versed in the specific vehicle you are purchasing. There were other employees who were able to answer my questions but ideally your salesperson would be well versed in the vehicle you are seeking. Next time I would ask for a salesperson who is knowledgable about the cars I am interested in so questions could be answered more efficiently and accurately. Oh and they present your, new to you, purchase with a giant bow placed on the hood. It was very sweet. I purchased the service warranty so we will see how that goes. But so far I would strongly recommend giving CarMax a chance. It's a great business idea that seams to take the sleazy out of used car sales. read more

I like the no-haggling policy, and being able to browse the inventory easily online so that when we come in for an appointment, we are able to take a look at what we selected. They were pretty straightforward. All 3 times we came away with cars bought from Them happily, abs the third time involved a return. (Hi tech Car not suitable for my dad, which was on us, not on CarMax). That just proves how true to form they were -- truly customer focused and hassle free. We sold our 2007 Honda CR-V to CarMax and had a good experience. I made an appointment for Saturday at 3:30pm online the day prior. A few hours later I got a call from Trey confirming the appointment and setting expectations that it may take an hour or so because Saturday afternoons are super busy. Trey was also able to confirm via text later on Friday we would not need to bring our title with us because the vehicle was electronically titled. This saved us from searching through 13 years of dust in our file cabinet to find the original title. We arrived for our appointment right at 3:30 and Trey greeted us about 20 mins later. He was very nice and walked us through the process setting expectations for how they appraise vehicles. The primary driver is 7-day auction prices for similar vehicles as long as there are no major issues with your vehicle. He mentioned up front the offer may not align to Edmunds or NADA, but should be close to Kelly Blue Book. I just wanted a fair offer so this was ok. They completed the appraisal by 4:15pm. Trey took us through the review of the car and everything checked out ok. Our offer was $4000 which was a fair offer based on Kelly Blue Book values so we decided to move forward with the sale. The paperwork to sell was straight forward. It took a little longer than they said it would, but no big deal. We weren't in a hurry. We pulled out of the parking lot with the check in hand just before 5pm so about 90 mins start to finish after arriving on a busy day. This included a few minutes to go through the car and make sure we didn't leave anything by mistake. Overall, CarMax set the bar high for managing my expectations and this led to a smooth and pleasant experience. I don't sell a car I've owned for 13 years every day so I really appreciated the complete lack of stress. I would definitely use CarMax again. read more

I called at 8pm to ask if I could come in to the the appraisal done at 8:30, and the person said yes and booked the appointment for me and told me as long as I get there around 8:30 then they can appraise my car. I got there then they asked me to sit and wait for the consultant to come. I waited more than 20 minutes and they just come to me saying their consultant is gone! It was still 10 minutes before 9pm, the closing time of the store. Then their manager, Brianna, come and ask me to leave with very unfriendly and contemptuous manner. So this is how CarMax treats their customers. And this is how their employees leaving work before the closing time leaving the customer who had an appointment sitting and waiting. Went into CarMax a year ago, looking into a vehicle after looking at some online. Was greeted by a young man named Luke! Who answered a bunch of questions about the car (thought he was actually giving me facts or knew what he was talking about) let us test drive it around a short area around there lot. Over and over stressed to this kid I need a safe and reliable vehicle that isn't gonna leave my children and I stranded!!! My biggest mistake was staying, and listening to the b.s. this kid was about to feed me worth over $20k..... Without going into my whole 12 months worth of the headache and drama with this company my car has been in the shop for just shy of 8 weeks with no resolution and the extended warranty is a joke!!!! David in service will tell you like after like that he will do all he can to help, stay in contact and reach to you ..... Don't waste your time waiting on someone who will make you seem like you have no idea what you are talking about it calling him out that your the one lying!!! I am warning any and everyone is you even think of buying a car at CarMax if Renton you should take it to a certified mechanic elsewhere and have them run a full diagnostic on the vehicle!!!! I have had the worst experience with Carmax, I bought a 70k diesel truck from them putting 50k down (with trade in) and not even in the first year it was in the shop with multiple issues ranging from Electrical to DPF system. I have had roughly 5k in repairs thankfully covered under warranty, unfortunately I had to pay for labor. I tried talking with Carmax Lynnwood management about getting me out of this truck but they instead decided that it wasn't there problem and to take it up with max care and the manufacturer so I took it to a mechanic Carmax sent me too and THEY didn't even want anything to do with it, Keep in mind I'm paying for "Max care" I ended up goin to a dealership and the truck has been in that shop 4 times in the last year and this last time I had it in the shop I was out of a vehicle for 2 months, I called max care and carmax corporate for any help what so ever and I received nothing, they did not help me what so ever. Car max told me to come back when the truck is fixed and they will appraise it to "help me out" and I received an offer 15k under what the truck is worth. How unfortunate that I gave them multiple attempts to fix this issue and they continue to brush it off like its not there problem. After I left today the manager I spoke with during my truck problems smiled and waved as I left the store as if he didn't care and it wasn't his problem very rude to treat your customers like trash and over all probably the worst experience I have had in customer service and in the dealership world. read more

I bought a Prius from Carmax about a month ago. They knowingly sold me this car without telling me it had a strong odor from the previous owner. I didn't notice it when I test drove it because they managed to conceal it temporarily and I didn't realize the magnitude til I was driving it back home and got a bad migraine and my daughter noticed the scent as well and got a headache after riding in it with me. I got the car de-odorized by Carmax two days after purchasing it but it did nothing for the problem. I tried Contacting them with no return response or anything. I love that car but the scent is very strong and sticks to my clothes,body. Everything. I regret buying it and I wish Carmax had disclosed this but they didn't. I turned in my former vehicle because of significant issues and now I have a car that smells like motor oil and paint... What an incredible experience I've had buying from Carmax Renton. First off, they offered way more than I owed on my previous car so I happily traded it in. I bought a car and it had some issues (as used cars do from time to time), they happily took it back and helped me find a car that was an even better match for me at another one of their locations. They were very welcoming right off the bat, there was alittle wait so we browsed the lot and found a few great options.
