I recently purchased a vehicle from CarMax, and the experience was below the level of professionalism I expected. When I arrived to pick up the car, the battery was completely dead -- something that should have been caught during their inspection process. Instead of addressing the issue immediately, I was told after I was about to sign paperwork that "there's no mechanic on site today." That is not the customer's problem, and it should never have delayed or complicated delivery. What followed was even more unacceptable: I was essentially expected to sign the purchase documents and then accompany an employee to an auto parts store to purchase a battery for the car I had just bought. No dealership should ever hand a customer a non‑functional vehicle and call it a completed sale. When I later called to get clarity, I was dismissed, put on speaker, and could hear people talking in the background in another language. Instead of professionalism, I was told I was "cracking up" and that a manager would call me. At every step, the burden was shifted onto me rather than CarMax taking responsibility for its own oversight. I resolved the battery issue myself, but the lack of accountability, communication, and basic respect means I will not be purchasing another vehicle from CarMax. My experience showed me that once the paperwork is signed, the customer is on their own. Update. A few things to note: the car wasn't fully checked before sale -- my coolant reservoir was empty, and the battery was dead. I had to address these myself immediately after purchase. *UPDATE 12/04/2024* Vehicle was towed back to CarMax 11/25/2024. Turns out oil cooler needed to be replaced.. Was supposed to get vehicle back today 12/04/2024. Unfortunately, during their test drive a check engine light came on, cylinder 6 is misfiring and now the fuel injector needs to be replaced. ETA is now Monday-Tuesday of nest week! :( I AM NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER!!! I'm thankful for the service technician who has been keeping me updated and their responsibility to repair/replace but CarMax.. Put yourself in my shoes. I bought a vehicle and less than 2 hrs of having it, it had to go into repair and I have been running on 2 weeks of not having my newly purchased vehicle. I'm highly concerned withe repairs being put into the vehicle so soon. Did CarMax really perform the 125 pt inspection before listing for sale on their lot? The car has less than 60K miles on it... I am waiting for a return call from a Manager. My 10 day return should be extended since I have not really gotten to experience the vehicle, EVERYTHING must be checked with a fine tooth comb before returning it to me as I will take it to a trusted mechanic for a pre inspection behind CarMax's technicians and their work.. ALSO, CarMax should compensate me for my first car payment since I am paying for a vehicle I have not gotten to drive or experience (other than the test drive and drive home from the lot) Hopefully CarMax can understand why I am leaving this review. Take your car to Echo Park instead of CarMax! Tried to sell my deceased father's car. Had all the paperwork they needed, but it took CarMax ~4 hours over 2 days to come back and say I needed to go to the DMV to retitle the car. I understood their position, but this couldn't have been the first time they've gone through this (e.g. deceased person on title). They could have just said that up front. Go to DMV and retitle. A nice lady there recommended Echo Park nearby. Went there, sold the car for $3K more than CarMax offered. Edited to add: Staff I worked with were super nice. Just the length of the process and the inability to get a manager to make a call, wasn't great read more

Took it back in today to sell to them. The process was very smooth and efficient. The woman going through the paperwork with us was very clear and efficient. In addition, she was training someone and it was clear that she was very knowledgeable and attentive to detail. (She was a great teacher -- kind of wanted to recruit her for WCPSS.) Overall, I think the whole process took less than half an hour. We have sold cars to individuals ourselves before which can be such a time consuming and frustrating process. I went to this location to sell my vehicle. I had completed the appraisal online and got a price. I took my car in, and they matched my appraised online price which was great . I didn't want to sell that day, so I went back home and looked online again, and I used Kelly blue book, and it stated that I would get $300 more via Carmax. A couple of days later, when I went in, I met with their customer service rep and informed her of the price increase, and she asked Nicholas, who I don't know what his job title is, and she came back and said they don't price match. I said, well, I did use Kelly Bluebook, but it said Carmax would pay $300 more, it had a Carmax code and everything and I didn't think it was a price match because it was the same COMPANY. I understood they would want to stay with the lower appraisal, and I was okay with that, but the way Nicholas spoke to me was appalling. He was rude and condescending in front of my kids and husband. I didn't want to hurl my kids across town. If not, I would have left. He was very full of himself and arrogant in his speech. He made that experience horrible. He could have simply said in a professional way, he won't be able to honor the higher price and not speak to me like I was a child. read more

I'm hoping that sharing my experience with this location will save others the time, hassle and stress that comes along with buying a car from here. The purchase process was smooth. It took us less than an hour and we were out and about with our new car! Unfortunately, this is the only positive thing I can say. It wasn't until 3 weeks after we drove home in the car that we received the registration and plates in the mail. To our shock, a random, unrelated woman was listed as the primary individual on the registration and title of our car. We immediately called CarMax- and were horrified to find out that an employee did not carefully type in my drivers license number, and therefore registered and titled our vehicle to a random woman. It took weeks of us calling nonstop to get a straightforward answer and solution. Every single person we spoke to told us something different. If we didn't call them- they would not have resolved this at all. They were not motivated to make the situation right or fix their mistakes. Every other party we spoke to (the NC DMV, our lienholder, our car insurance company) said they were not surprised- and that CarMax is known to sloppily enter information and be slow to fix errors. Meanwhile, we were racing the clock in hopes that a solution would be found before the temporary tags on our car expired. To hear that this is unfortunately not a one-time issue with this location, but rather their reputation- I'm regretful we gave them any business at all. Had I known what would be in store after we drove off the lot, I certainly would've bought elsewhere. read more

I reserved the vehicle on a Monday online and scheduled to look at it on Saturday. Thought that was cool that they held the vehicle for me. Once arriving Hasem greeted me with a friendly and welcoming attitude. He was my salesman throughout the process. He was super nice, patient, very attentive, knowledgeable, explained everything to a "T", when asked a question he answered it quickly, and gave advice when asked. My husband was in an accident that left our car totaled on a Wednesday. The following Monday we drove our new-to-us car off the lot. Here's what happened in between. We needed a car fast for a variety of reasons and had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted. We had test driven cars at Carmax in Austin but had never bought, so we knew they didn't haggle but made sure the car would be ready to go and would make the transaction fairly smooth. Holly B was our salesperson. She was very pleasant and listened to what we were looking for. She did the customary looking up certain cars that fit those criteria, making her recommendations based on our price, taking us out on several test drives, and explaining the warranty levels, return policy, and financing options. We looked through their online database and found one at another location that fit all of our criteria - what they had in their lot was fine but none fit as well as this one - and she arranged for it to be transferred to this location and promised to contact us once it arrived. Being an engineer and general nerd (I say all that endearingly) and given that he walked away from his accident with a single bruise, my husband spent about 6 hours total researching safety ratings from a variety of sources. He found that the car we had chosen ranked on the lower end and got cold feet, so he texted Holly to explain that and asked her to cancel the transfer. She texted back in a few minutes saying no problem, just let her know when he's ready to come back in and try again. He finally decided to stay with our old make/model and found they had 3 on their lot. She was working that day, and since we were kind of excited, without much thinking he texted her to let her know all this and that we were on our way to make the 30 minute drive. It occurred to me as we pulled into the lot that we had no idea if she was even available at that moment, and it turned out she was test driving another client. We waited maybe 20 minutes or so til she came out to get us and she STILL apologized for keeping us waiting even though it was on us and not her. Basically, we test drove and made a decision. What we didn't know is that Carmax takes care of a lot of the extras such as title and registration for you, which is nice. Yes, you pay a premium for that, but it was nice to find we don't have to wait in line for all that. The 5 day return policy was a huge plus since they will also refund your service fee, and Holly assured us that even she had taken advantage of the return policy herself. We did buy a warranty as well. While yes, they are used car salespeople, no one felt pushy or slimy. I decided a few days later that I wanted my regular mechanic's opinion on the car as well. Everything turned out fine, and it was nice to have that peace of mind. It's a Honda with low miles and he mentioned that an extended warranty in this case is overkill, in his opinion, so we decided after some thought to cancel the extended warranty. We called Carmax and they canceled it for us, no questions asked. Could we have gotten a better deal elsewhere? I'm sure we could've. Would it have been as convenient? Compared to buying on craigslist, which we've done in the past, not at all when you consider the 5 day return policy, title and registration, preinspection before buying, etc. Compared to a dealer (which admittedly I've never done), I would imagine it's less of a headache. If you're looking for a great deal and have the time and wherewithal to work it (typically we do, but did not have time in this case), go elsewhere. Carmax will give you what is likely a fair deal, and it's much easier and time consuming overall. read more

We bought a car from this location last year after my wife's car was totaled by a hit and run driver. This year my 15-year-old car died and I needed to purchase another vehicle. I looked up their inventory online and came on a weekday night. We examined the finalists and test-trove the Acura hybrid I ended up buying. I thought they would process everything for me to come back and pick it up the next morning, but they were able to do everything that night - from the credit check and financing to handing me the keys to drive home. We paid a down payment by check and returned a few days later to pay off the balance outright. I like that they are pretty much no hassle and efficient. Sure, you could probably bargain for a lower price at another place but I prefer a straightforward experience. The car I got had a few more bells and whistles than I needed, but needing a vehicle sooner rather than later meant that time was of the essence. Just like with my wife's car last year, we took the car to our mechanic who found some minor issues like air filters needing to be replaced, but on the whole the engine was in good shape. read more

We bought the car 10 days ago and just learned TODAY that they have sent it to Jeep to determine the problem. No one proactively calls us to give us updates, we have to call them constantly to know what is going on. Villainy! Do not go here my friends, it is a mistake--trust me! Carmax sells cars with a plethora of issues and of course they will not tell you this up front. And when you ask them to rectify the issues they will do nothing at all. Do not pay extra here (because you surely will, they overcharge) for their bs certification process. Apparently brakes that are mostly worn out pass an inspection, and therefore are somehow acceptable?! It is ridiculous to expect a customer to spend $500 more on an already overpriced used vehicle because Carmax was too uncaring to fix it beforehand. I feel like they hate me and want me to get in an accident--don't they know who I am?!( A person worthy to creep down the highway at 5 mph daily) Brakes matter, and as any Triangle resident knows--stop and go traffic is sometimes just part of the daily commute. CarMax wants us to risk our lives and take our money at the same time. No one's going to take the wheel when you have your baby in the back seat sleeping like a rock, and CarMax wants you to let go of all your money.
