CARMAX bought our 2020 Prius at Bluebook price on September 12. The deal was fast and painless! AS a result, a couple of weeks later we found they had a 2021 Mazda on the lot with low miles. We already had a 2010 we'd purchased new, and it's never had one problem, so we bought the 2021 on October 1st. Mazda's are highly rated by Consumer Reports! First and last time ever at a CarMax. No customer service to actually sell a car, employees are not in sales, equal to going to Mcdonald's, ordering off a menu and they show you the car. Employees had feet up on their desk, on their phones. I couldn't even test drive because I didn't have an appointment, that's not wanting a sale. And you have to take a selfie for their system just to drive a car? You have my DL and insurance, you don't need my picture too! Weird and unnecessary. Horrible experience and bad feeling about the whole process. Tip for consumers: Had a vehicle shipped to test drive. Got a call an hour before appointment there was something wrong with the car and they couldn't sell it. Wouldn't you check before it was shipped? read more

After obtaining an on-line estimated offer from CarMax for my car - a gorgeous 2013 Tesla Model S in excellent condition, always garaged and with under 50,000 miles, I made an appointment for an appraisal. After a long wait, they made me an offer that was 23% below the bottom of the range and 46% less than the top of the range they had offered in the on-line estimate. MASSIVE bait and switch. This was my first and last time dealing with CarMax. But at least they were friendly. read more

Yikes no stars please . I waited for them to appraise my car no engine issues leather , heated seats , nice I have it for sale at $6500 I did my homework extensively , I sold cars for many years. I came in to Carmax to sell them my car just to see if it would be easier than waiting to sell my car on my own. I know without a doubt I can get that amount for my car at minimum. Carmax offered me inoffensive amount of $1000 for my vehicle. I literally could get more from a junkyard. I will attach photos of my car and you can tell me what you think! I laughed at the dude and walked out as I drove down the street, because I still have a for sale sign in my window. A man flag me down and offered me 6000 for my car! Do not sell your car to car max !! I even checked how much my car went for at auctions and at dealers and private 100% they could've offered me a solid 4500 and made money . Make sure you inspect everything if you do buy!!!! Go thru the checklist! 100% Quite disappointed, I bought a truck a couple weeks, everything went well except that just noticed the rear tires have some very visible cracks. I had checked front tires when I picked up truck because they had told me they were new (yes, these looked new) but I didn't check the rear ones, I review the inspection checklist that I had and tires were marked as replaced. When I called I explained this, to see if they could replace the cracked ones because I don't feel safe for us as they looked pretty cracked. They asked me to bring it in for evaluation. A tech evaluated them and according to them they are still good and passes as "safe to drive" even tho tire are almost 5 years old!!! We're still have about 60 days if I decide to return it! Guess that's just a positive with Carmax but not so happy that once they sell they don't care anymore. read more

Quotes are real loose here. I received a quote and when I brought my car in to sell within the week, I was told that I had to bring my car to a dealership for a factory recall that I was unaware of. This took me a few weeks to get for an appointment. This car was never driven outside of just to the dealership and back home. No change in the quality of the vehicle. When I brought my car back 3 weeks later, it needed a new appraisal. This one came in at HALF of the one I received 3 weeks earlier. It was clear by the mileage that I had not driven it at all. When I questioned how the appraisal had dropped in half, they said "market trends" have changed. In 3 weeks? Yes, apparently. So, I went home and did an online transaction with Carvana and will gladly accept their appraisal and purchase for 18% OVER the original Carmax quote (keep in mind that they were only offering me half of that quote today, so I saved a good deal of money). I highly recommend to try Carvana instead of Carmax. read more

Came here to buy my brother a vehicle and the service here is non existence. We came here and the whole experience was terrible. The test drive of 3 vehicles with the worker not giving any information about the vehicles but singing to the radio. It was bizarre and akward. We dicided to come back because we were not completely sold on a vehicle yet. We came back the next day and was helped by another worker and he was ok at first but then became very condescending after discussing putting down a down payment. The worker made us feel like we didnt have any money. Something told me not to do business with these people. We left and decided to think about it, although I already knew I didnt want to move forward. Went to Honda around the corner and got my brother a 2024 vehicle with less money down and was treated with great customer service. The transaction took about 3 hours. I could see how this place got its ratings majority of the people that work here have no knowledge of what's going on . This is for the corporate of carmax. Train your people better , they slack off customer services and not owning up to their mistakes at both locations in the business office. Murrieta and Oceanside on plaza dr. Communication runs a business which sad to say majority of people there don't have.. Your team should all be on the same page instead all the employees have different responses when ask a question telling different answers and wasting peoples time and most important we can't buy time back. Be more considerate. I could be a total ass and bust every single name out that wasn't playing their role on here ,but i'm not. However I do want to give a shoutout to Josh at the business office I believe he's the sales manager there . Great work ethics and really hears your concern. I definitely would rate give him a 5 star as an individual and patiently dealing with the problem. Honestly he's probably the only reason why carmax is getting another star if it wasn't for him I would have just left it at 1 sounds harsh but carmax you guys got ways to go. Bunch of crooks here. Took a car here to sell which was running fine forever and then after the appraiser was through with it it suddenly had a check engine light and transmission problems. No specifics on the transmission problem but I know the appraiser pulled a wire from one of the ignition coils to trigger the check engine light and a misfire code for cylinder 4. All this to give a much lower value of the car, the "problems" knocked 3k off the value. read more

Overall very poor experience communication was bad. I had tried to get truck walk around down prior to shipping from Burbank. The CSR called once early morning and left only a text response system, no ability to call back and explain what I was looking for and questions I had over the phone. I called back and spoke with a nationwide rep to do a walk around the questions were what size was the truck bed, (WEBSITE DOES NOT LIST TRUCKBED SIZES/LENGTHS ON THEIR WEBSITE INVENTORY THIS IS A CRITICAL DETAIL/ITEM), also asked if there were any odors. They did call me back and say the walk around was done the truck bed was 6 1/2' and no odors inside. I then asked to proceed with transfer. When truck arrived to Oceanside I got an email that it was ready to test drive (No call or text). Went to dealership 8pm got in store was NEVER greeted, so I walked over to desk a girl said everyone was busy and I'd be put on wait list. A few minutes later Erik, sales consultant became available. First thing I noticed when entering cab was a strong mildew/musky odor. He offered a test drive, took truck for a spin also had a tape measure and checked bed length, which turned out to be 5' 6" not the quoted 6' 6". Basically the only 2 questions I asked prior to shipping were both lies from the Burbank walk around. Was an extremely disappointing experience overall. The following day I got a call from Jordan at Oceanside to come take a look at the truck, after explaining that I'd been in the previous night, etc I asked (WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME TO COME LOOK AT THE TRUCK, DOESN'T YOUR SYSTEM SHOW WHERE I WAS JUST THERE AND TEST DROVE IT? THAT ANSWER WAS NO) and I shared what had happened with Jordan about my visit. I asked for a follow up call from the LGM Jenny which still hasn't happened nor do I expect it to. read more

I bought a car from CarMax, on a Saturday, that needed a new battery. They said it will be taken care of first thing monday morning. So I go there to get the new battery. It took 4 hours to get a new battery & have it installed. The service there is very poor except for one person, who's very good at her job but she took the day off. Don't pay for a car there until everything is in excellent working order. Also, the key fob doesn't work right & it won't get fixed till Wednesday. read more

This was by far the worst car buying experience I have ever had. Avoid this place at all costs. I had to go back there at least 4 times and it literally took hours and hours of my time. This was after arranging an "express check out" only having to give the same information over and over even when I took the time to enter it on line . Then they gave me a 1 day valid registration pass to drive to Arizona to Register the car but withheld the documents to register it! Instead of handing them to me they said they would mail it to me in 8 days?? Their rational was " what if you decided to return it??" But they give 30 days to decide that anyway. Makes no sense except wanting me to drive illegally for 7 days. I insisted on having the registration documents and went back there a 4th time to get them. This is an unorganized place that appears to not know what they are doing. read more

Had an issue with our Tesla within 30 days of purchase. The sales rep told us if they could not fix it to take it to Tesla directly. and they would compensate us. Because we literally just bought the car that week. So they couldn't fix it, we went to Tesla. It cost us $400 and when we try to get a refund, no one will return our phone calls. We will never buy a car from Carmax again. read more

Bought a vehicle there and they told us they would take care of registering the vehicle with the DMV fast forward 30 days and I receive a notice in the mail saying they failed to register the vehicle and the DMV sends me a notice saying I owe 731 dollars to register the vehicle. This is for their service department. Kathy and Tony were so helpful and attentive and the technicians fixed my car quickly and for a price that was MUCH more affordable than a mechanic had quoted me (the mechanic quoted almost $2k and CarMax fixed it for $213). The waiting room was clean and pleasant to wait in and everyone working there was quite friendly. I purchased my car at a different CarMax and had just an okay experience, but getting my car serviced here really changed my perspective on my purchase and on CarMax. I will definitely be coming back to CarMax Oceanside for future servicing needs. read more

We took our car that was recently purchased from CarMax to get the promised repairs. Mind you, we had to call and leave numerous voicemails because they did not follow up after the purchase. We dropped the car off on a Thursday. We didn't hear anything by the end of the day, so called them. We got a voicemail. We called the next morning and they said they had looked at it but did not find the problem. It took the guys at the tire shop 10 minutes to locate the shock that was leaking. They clearly had not started looking at the car. They said they would get back to is by the end of the day. Since we did not hear we called and they said they were still looking at it. They gave is the option of leaving it over the weekend so we they could get moving on it first thing Monday morning or we could bring it back Monday. We left it over the weekend and did not get anywhere Monday. It is now Tuesday evening and all we have gotten is voicemails. This company is a mess. If you would like to have a car to drive, stay away from here. read more
