I had a 2015 2 seat convertible foreign sports car which I was finally ready to give up in place of a 2024 Tundra which I'd purchased 2 weeks earlier, had gotten an estimate from the dealer where I'd purchased it,cand wanted to see if CarMax would make a better offer. They didn't, as they offered about $2000 less than the dealer, however I was impressed by the efficient operation they had. The place was enormous indoors, and there was certainly ample parking. The waiting accomodations were comfortable.It was fairly simple to schedule an appointment online to visit, and the staff were all super pleasant. Within 5 minutes of arrival, my sports car was being inspected by someone who was too bid to get into it without difficulty. He seemed to be taking a plethora of pictures, and kept walking around and around the vehicle out in the parking lot. I honestly don't know how to access the engine, and apparently he didn't either, because he brought it indoors, jacked it up, and was done in minutes after which he vanished into some back room, ostensibly to enter the VIN and do a background check on my little car. If not for the lower price offered by my dealer, I wouldn't have minded selling them my car. Did I mention that you leave with the check? ( I had to wait several days to receive my check in the mail from my dealer). Overall, I was impressed and would recommend if you need to sell and /or purchase a vehicle. read more

Do not purchase a car from this place. They do not thoroughly check over the vehicles before they are sold. I purchased a 2019 Mercedes-Benz from them in September 2023. They came out with two keys, one in which was split in half and had scotch tape around the battery portion and they weren't planning to provide me with another one until I spoke up and asked them to provide me with a new one. The keys cost over $300 on their own And they were going to let me walk out of there with a busted key! The other key, which was intact, had a dead battery! Within two weeks, the sunroof started leaking. I had to return once more over an hour, from where I live to have the sunroof repaired. I later learned that they did not include the memory card that was originally meant for the vehicle. As soon as the weather changed and temps, dropped my tire pressure signals came on and I've had nothing but issues with the tires holding air. I came out to my vehicle this morning and my front right tire is completely flat so I go to the rear to change it into a spare in order to have the original tire assessed and there is no spare tire in the trunk! I'm assuming because there has been issues with the tire pressure all along with the vehicle. I called for assistance and received none. I will never purchase from them again and recommend searching elsewhere if you can avoid them. Oh and I almost forgot to mention, my taillight also needed replaced within the first month too! UPDATE: BOTH FRONT WHEELS ARE BROKEN. The vehicle was assessed by a local (trustworthy) service station and they put it up and showed me where the cracks in the wheels had been previously marked in yellow! Carmax KNEW the wheels were broken and willingly sold it to me in that condition without hesitation or consideration for mine or my children's safety! I suspect the majority of these positive reviews are NOT valid customers. read more

Selling your car? Avoid CarMax -- it was a colossal waste of time. While waiting for their staff to test-drive my car, I overheard an employee tell another customer that they were offering her less than their original offer, because their test-drive revealed that her car was "shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear." She had difficulty understanding this claim, because she'd had no such problem. After a few minutes of trying to push back and prove them wrong, she stood, said something like her father told her that they would lie about a mechanical problem and offer her less, and she left. When my test-drive was completed, an employee (not the one who test drove my car) told me that they were offering me $2,500 less than their original offer, because they found that it was "shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear." When I told him it isn't and his driver is wrong, he said that CarMax offering less than the original amount has "never happened before." read more

Having heard so much about it, decided to get my car appraised for getting price idea before selling it. Being the first experience with this place, I very impressed with their service. The whole experience from start to end went smoothly. No pressure from their salespeople, they took the car for a test drive, inspected it, got the history and the details of the vehicle from us. Didn't have to wait long for their assessment, got a price and quote from them pretty fast. They had a huge stock of vehicles in their parking lot. Location was big inside, with a reception area to greet as soon as one enters from the main door. Lot of comfortable seating inside while one waits on the car, TV displays, vending machines. I paid $100 to have mine transferred 70 miles, on a trailer, so no additional miles are added to your vehicle. They work with everyone, good to bad credit. They even include a full tank of gas! Really bad sales experience. I get there for my appointment and nobody there to great you. I walk the lot and still nobody greeting me. I go back inside and a guy yells across the showroom if I need help I walk over takes my name and realized I have a appointment. Asks me to pull my trade in the bay instead of them doing it. Our buying experience at carmax was awful. We wanted a car, so they got it in. Went to test drive it. The air bag light was on. They found a second one. Same thing. They were supposed to send the first one to get fixed and a week later it was still sitting there. Then they said that they would send the second one. In the meantime we contacted another dealership and found a car. Four years newer a d a lot more bells and whistles. The only problem was carmax had our down payment and gave us the run around for an hour and a half. I even called the corporate office and they hung up on me. Yep, you read that right. CORPORATE hung up on me. How professional. We finally got our down payment back and were able to get the car at a different dealership. We will never set foot on Carmax's doorstep again. I feel compelled to post this due to the new ads regarding getting good money for your trade-in. I had the opposite experience. First let me say that the saleswoman I worked with was very helpful and patient since I was going through a very difficult time when I decided to look for a new vehicle. I paid to have one shipped to the location but was not allowed to see it until it was run through their PA checks, even though it had been at another Carmax in MD. I never did get to see the car, even though I paid $99 for it to be shipped there. I jumped ship when my car was inspected and I was told it needed a new transmission so they offered $2500 for my car that I still owed $6,000 on. I walked out, took it to my mechanic and found it needed a change in transmission fluid. It is now almost 2 years later and my car is still running beautifully. I am certain these are things they say and do to lower the offer. Buyer beware!! If they claim something major is wrong with your car, have your mechanic confirm that. read more

They don't use book value for your trade in they use their own "system". Either sell it first or be prepared to be offered $2500 less or more than book. They also price their vehicles for sale at high book value. They take buy low sell high to new levels. No wonder they can afford those expensive tv commercials. read more
