Let me start by saying it's been a HORRID last 2 years for me. From losing a job (FOUND A NEW ONE!), not having an apartment work out and moving back home with my parents, lost my only car from a crash, and having to walk to work in -20 weather everyday during winter 5 days a week. I tried so hard. I felt like giving up. Everything I thought I had was gone. It all went downhill. I decided to save and chance it going to buy a new car. My team at Carmax worked their tails off. It felt like my hopes at first were low due to being rejected by almost ALL car companies. (Ford, chevy, VW, ect!) CarMax made my process easier than the others! But why? I used the app to find my prequalified options and finally found the ONE! She was a beauty. I said to myself "that's my car" I still cringed at the thought of rejection hence my credit score, REPO history I was trying to grow and overcome... within the minutes of finding the car, I did a loan application. I kid you not 3 minutes later I have a blue sparkly screen that said "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED" I cried.... it worked fast for me. I was shocked. I was astounded by how fast the application was and approval and how EASY. The next day at work I was getting eager and nervous and doubtful still! Like "maybe it was fake?" So I read reviews and of course all companies have them. You can't honestly base someone else's experience off yours. So I doubted half the fake reviews that consisted of people probably never bought a car from them anyway! Bianca from the team called me to catch up and confirm the process to tell me how things were going. She even asked me how I was doing and how she was excited to say it was approved.... Soon after Brianna a sales rep called and confirmed and told me I needed insurance on the car & a deposit and I could come in. So I agreed and said I'll do it in the morning. The morning comes I get eager, I buy the insurance hoping to god it wasn't fake or false hope because the application, it was just simple and fast. My other dealership experience with ford was 4+ hours!!!!! I got eager & called CarMax and said "it's done" and I'm eager for the car. CarMax people called me back saying "COME IN ITS READY!" So I drove 2 hours to the CarMax my car was at. On my way down about 1 hour in JOHN from CarMax said "I'm sending a fast application so we can hurry the process and get you in your car fast!" John was amazing. He listened to me rant how excited and how far I'm coming for my car. John listened to me on the phone and it was the most humane conversation I had with someone in a long time. It was my 1 good thing that's happened to me in a whole 2 years. It felt like a true "CarMax Miracle " I had a giant bow on my car when I turned around!!! It was so beautiful. My heart melted. I felt relieved. I could breath for once and go home in my car!!! We go in and finish my down payment & he handed me the keys. I drove off with the biggest grin! what I received was the best customer service & professional opinion/help. I have never doubted the experienced staff at CarMax I never doubted the team/business. I doubted myself. And I never doubt Anyone at CarMax because The integrity, courage and pride is all attributes that were displayed. when in hopes to purchase a car, I will never doubt CarMax with professionalism. In this case, it was about Helping me and making my life a little bit more better. NOT ONCE WAS IT The dealer saying "this car" or "you are only allowed this car" or something the dealer wants to sell you. It was all WHAT I WANTED. I've been to about 8 dealers both corporate & local. This was the FIRST THAT DID NOT SELL ME A CAR BUT SOLD ME A FRIENDSHIP AND LOYALTY. I PROMISE YOU CAN WALK IN AND YOU WONT BE SHOVED IN A CAR YOU HATE OR DON'T EVEN LIKE. YOU made my life better. I can now go to work with ease and go home not freezing and crying from exhaustion. I purchased a vehicle from CarMax on Feb 20th and they had it shipping out of MA within a day and by Feb 28th they killed the EV's 12V battery by failing to put it in transport mode and plugging it in. The vehicle was then stuck in Chicago for 4 WEEKS. They failed to follow warranty processes of car manufacturers and tried to tell me they couldn't get it serviced until April 14th. I called the manufacturer and they got the service appointment moved up to March 19 (three business days after I called). The manufacturer had to do everything to get the situation resolved as CarMax didn't help but tried to claim credit that their team got the appointment moved up. CarMax got the vehicle back on March 24th and couldn't get transportation arranged for 4 days. Remember they originally shipped it out in one day but the local General Manager tried to tell me it was so extremely complex to ship this vehicle thus the delay. The vehicle is still not here five weeks after purchase; Chicago is only 6 hours from us. I will never buy another vehicle from them again. We have to ask for updates while everyone up to the store manager just makes excuses. If it weren't for the EV configuration, I would have bought from someone else a month ago. read more

If you are looking to sell a car, here's how it works: they give you an "offer" online and ask you to bring your vehicle in. Especially if it has any add-on's like a pickup topper, bedliner, premium accessories. When you get there, they nitpick the vehicle, tell you the options decrease the value, and give you a lower offer. I was absolutely shocked how easy it was to sell my vehicle at Carmax. Historically, I'd never have considered it as it felt shady to me, but that turned out to be totally irrational. When the lease on my vehicle was close to ending, I settled on a new car at the nearby Luther Brookdale Mazda dealership (great experience as well). While they gave a very fair price to buy my vehicle (it left me with $3.1k in equity), I got a quote from CarMax's website just in case and the instant quote offered me $5.1K in equity. That means I could sell my car for $2k more than if I had traded my vehicle into Mazda. The whole process was fast and hassle-free. They quickly appraised the vehicle, pulled the title and registration for me, paid off the residual few months of lease payments, and handed me a check for $5.1K in less than an hour. Luke was great to work with and everyone else was very friendly. I was shocked when they offered me the exact price from the online quote- no trying to haggle me down for wear and tear or anything. I was not expecting that (though to be clear, my car was in almost perfect condition). The dealership I leased my new vehicle from said CarMax can't be beat for what they can offer people for their used cars. Evidently because they are a nationwide chain, they can pay more for a car than it's worth in one market, then transport it somewhere else where they can sell for more. If you're in the market to sell your car, you owe it to yourself to get an online quote from CarMax before selling to a dealership, at least right now with used car demand as high as it is. Overall it was a bad experience. I've had good experiences at carmax in Chicago, Brooklyn lark and Milwaukee area. This was a rare change. I had an appointment with a gentlemen but when I got there I was told to sit in the waiting area. Then someone came over to me to tell me that he was "sick" and another sales person would be taking care of us. I would of been nice to get a call that we would be working with a different rep. But okay. This guy was rude. From the start of the conversation he was sarcastic. And he had a demeaning tone. At one point after my 65 year old mom asked "so are we going to test drive the vehicle?" He stated "you need to speak up, I can't read your mind!" Like the dude had zero prior knowledge of the Honda CRV, he himself seemed unexcited about the car. Saying things like, "wow, there's more room than I thought in here". We ended up walking off the lot before the test drive because we didn't feel comfortable with the rep. After the encounter we called the manager to give him feedback. He didn't own the impact of how the sales rep made us feel. He continuously said, "he's my top sales guy." And "I stand behind him" and "you misunderstood him". Misunderstanding or not. He never once said "sorry you feel this way" or "left me find you a new sales rep" just rude. I have a lot of thoughts on CarMax. I promised myself to wait a year so my feedback was not irrational. 12 months later, here you go... Best advice: Do your research. There's pros and cons to national car dealerships like CarMax. Here's my experience... Buying Process - I really enjoyed the car buying process with CarMax. I had a miserable car buying experience at the Ford dealership in White Bear Lake, MN (very misogynistic), and then my brother-in-law recommended CarMax so I checked it out. Buying a car is like getting your teeth pulled, but not at CarMax. Stress free environment, no pressure, friendly staff, etc. Our sales guy was young but worked hard to make us happy. Nice test drive, signed up for extended warranty and GAP insurance, and financing was smooth. 5/5 Service - I bought a 2016 Hyundai Tuscan Sport with dual turbo engine. The first week of driving it my wife and I noticed with the dual turbo it shifts gears clunky (unique transmission), so we took it back to CarMax. They gave me a rental for the week, looked at it, even took it to the local Hyundai dealer for inspection. Turns out this is normal for this model of Hyundai. (Side note: I found out this month that Hyundai is looking into a recall on those tranys). Nice service by CarMax. 4/5 Tires - Here's why they didn't get 5-stars. When you buy a used car from CarMax, if those current tires do not pass their minimum depth/quality threshold, their put "new" tires on the car. Great right? No! This is where Carmax cuts corners to save $$. They put "Sailun" tires on the car that retail for $55 each. Google "Sailun Tires", they're so cheap that Walmart doesn't sell them. I only found out how bad they are when we got our first snow and driving home from work I slid 70 feet into the car in front of me. Think CarMax covered that or bought me new tires? Of course not. My insurance rates went way up, and after 8 emails and 7 calls with CarMax, they were willing to offer me a 10% discount on new tires! It was a miserable experience. I'm assuming the decision to use cut-rate/unsafe tires comes from corporate (which is in Virginia by the way), but the decision of the manager of CarMax Maplewood to not do what's right for the customer or stand behind their product, was the worst service experience of my life. 1/5 I'm tied to CarMax because of my warranty and because I love my car, but I'll never buy a new vehicle at CarMax again. I purchased a vehicle from the CarMax Maplewood, Mn. location December of 2019. At that time it was made clear & in paperwork that the vehicles TPMS sensor was malfunctioning, & per the purchase agreement "needed to fixed, & or replaced" by CarMax at no charge to me. 2020 I take the vehicle in to get the TPMS problem fixed, they claim to have fixed it. Approximately 7 days later while driving I get "TPMS MALFUNCTION" on the dashboard display. I take the vehicle back in, get it back after getting it "fixed" (again) only to have the "TPMS MALFUNCTION" warning display again. It's now 2022, & I was at the dealership today, care to guess why... CarMax has NEVER honored the contact, nor have they ever truly fixed the issue, & today they had the audacity to attempt to charge me a diagnostic fee for the problem that never got corrected in the 1st place. Honestly I went in expecting not to walk out with a car. People had told me to stay away from Carmax but I wanted to see my options anyways. When I walked in I was immediately greated by an older gentleman named Fred. I brought my Mom with for support but he focused only on my needs/wants. Other dealerships I have gone to would only speak to my Mom even though I was the one looking to buy a car. This one detail alone made me feel 100 times more comfortable! Once we got down to business he was professional but fun at the same time. He only showed me cars that fit my budget, and completely supported me buying this car on my own. I was honest about my credit, and he was honest with me about the rate he expected. I have only been building my credit for 6 months and the interest rate was one thing that I was nervous about. After I picked my car he helped my apply for financing. To our surprise I was approved for a much better interest rate than expected! What I liked most was having the same guy walk me through the entire process, the no haggle pricing, and the friendly and inviting atmosphere. Carmax seriously exceeded my expectations! Stopped in last night to check out inventory....were probably out in the lot a half hour...NO one bothered us. Nor did they jump on us when we entered the building to get to the lot! Very much appreciated!! After I scoured the lot we went back in...again...no hassling....I looked around and approached someone who directed me to a different salesman. We sat with him probably an hour discussing cars and life stories....very personable. Took the vehicle on a test drive, all was flawless. Told the salesman I would be calling him in the morning & be back. Came back today....my yesterday salesman was helping another couple....so I waited. Not sure how long, maybe 15 minutes? A sales manager came out to say he was going to have me work with another guy, that often partners with my guy. I told him I really wasn't sold on a black car. He brought up the search to find another color & explained the process to me. Luckily they actually had a different one here, so I wouldn't have to wait for delivery!! I told him I was going to pay cash. Surprise to me!! I wouldn't even need to leave to get a cashiers check, they would take a personal one, with account verification! Throughout all of this process I did ask to bring the price down about $600...to an even number. He declined. Which I thought was fine, as I had checked kbb & seemed like a good price. Doesn't hurt to ask. So, in a little under three hours from walking in the door: I had a pleasant salesman experience, took a test drive, and took home my new to me vehicle! They took the car I purchased from them back after a month of me having it, saying the financing didn't go through...A month!! In addition, they had already sold my trade-in so I was stuck with no car. I went right down the road to Buerkle Hyundai and got a brand new car for less than the 2011 used vehicle Carmax sold me. Also, when I returned the car to Carmax, I signed multiple papers and asked for copies of everything. The business office lady argued with me on why I needed copies. Then, 2 minutes after I left the place, she called me back because she forgot to have me sign some sheets. Needless to say, I think I found out who dropped the ball the first time around. The salesperson rang it up and showed me the "sticker price" which turned out to be $2000 more than the actual sticker on the car was showing (21K vs 19K). Online price was also showing as 19K prior to out test drive appointment. Asked if there was anything that could be done based on the misrepresentation and the answer was no. So... apparently the "no haggle" approach to pricing only applies to the prospect of reducing the price, whereas they have no problem increasing the price without explaining it to the customer and misrepresenting the price prior to ringing you up. I am very disappointed, when we got there none of the employees came to greet us nor help us; we even asked for help a second time nobody still cared to assist us. We also called to schedule an appointment but that took another 30 mins before any of the employees answered the phone, but when they answered the phone it took an additional 20mins of questions, like all we wanted to do was look at the car. I got charged 190 for a diagnostic check for absolutely nothing wrong I'm 1 day past my 60 day mark my truck shakes but nope there specialist see no problem and cant make my vehicle do what it apparently does. I should have went to honest 1 auto or marley automotive there they wouldnt have charged me to just look at my truck. Its annoying to see shops do this to people just to make a petty 190 bucks. I brought an elderly couple who no longer can drive over to CarMax at the behest of the 91 year old mister who seemed to remember the CarMax name despite not knowing where they were located. I was hesitant to bring them and their car there without any research but he was adamant and I'm ultimately glad he was. We arrived without any sort of appointment or call ahead and upon arrival we were taken care of right away. The negotiations were thorough and all our questions were answered even after being asked five times over already. The car was sold for a fair price and the paperwork and the dealings with the lien holder were painless. We sat in a lovely sitting area where beverages were offered to us by a friendly associate who was kind enough to give us a ride back to the apartment. Thank you Patrick and thanks to the people at Carmax of Maplewood for helping an elderly couple close the driving chapter of their lives with minimal stress. I would definitely consider coming back next time I've got car business to take care of. read more

They sold me a lemon--it's been to the auction 3xs and it's 2yrs old! Look closely at the alignment of the vehicle BEFORE leaving. Check the number of owners and how many times it has been to auction on your paperwork. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Absolutely horrible experience from the 1hr hold time and kids in the background when you call Customer Relations to no availability in repair shops (within your 30 days) to a Sales "Manager" who gives you all the reasons why YOU don't want to return the vehicle (only trying to wait out the 30 days). It started with an 8hr bus ride to pick the vehicle up and "oh it's just cold" when it sounded like a semi-truck at start-up. Wind blowing directly on me from a replaced door and burning smells on the drive home. I was terrified I wouldn't make it. Finally, I get a good look at it and the front is unaligned and two windows are after- market. Clearly, this vehicle has been in accident. It spent days in the "body" shop, and I've been missing all the shifts from my 2nd job. Annnnd guess what--Yep, I still hear and feel wind and even Stevie Wonder can see the door is NOT aligned. So WHY, oh WHY CarMax would you return the car to me like this? Next, I schedule an appointment for service. No problem I'll wait 3 days. The same day I get a call from CarMax saying go to the other location they have openings. That's odd because I called there already and they don't have openings until next year. Get to the advised location only to be told "they should not have scheduled you without calling us first, you're the 2nd person they did that to today". I call Customer Relations from the parking lot. I sit there 4hrs while they "work on a remedy". Only to come back and say this may not be resolved today. You can't have a rental unless we diagnose the car first (odd, didn't have that problem last week). I politely drove to the original location and guess what? I received a rental with no diagnosis (full of animal hair-but I appreciate them vacuuming it when I pointed it out) and a referral to Nissan. Now, why couldn't they have offered that option in the first place? I guess the same reason several managers at various locations said "you don't have to drive all the way back to Minnesota to return it, we do this all the time. If you lived in FL would they expect you do that?" Apparently not for ME since the "Manager" I just spoke with who offered no apology for 30 days paying for a car that I couldn't drive says basically screw you spend 6hrs driving it back because we have that local power. I bet they're counting on me being over my mileage. How, it's been in the shop most of the time! read more

Beware- Carmax may give you a higher quote for your car but don't know how to payoff your lien. Sold my car to carmax and its been over a month my loan still has not been paid. When I called to follow up they somehow sent it to the wrong address and was told that they will resend the check. After two weeks I called to follow up cause my payment was coming due turns out they have not reissue a new check. The lady Shannon at carmax told me they'll over night it this time because its past the payoff date. A week later still my loan is not paid. Called again and all she keeps telling me is to wait. Its now over a month and yet they're just playing the runaround game yet can't provide me a tracking number and any further info so I can follow up with my bank. Again Im going to have to make another payment to a car I no longer have. I've sold plenty of car to other dealerships and have no issue with payoff. read more

We were told that it would be there by Friday (Tuesday before thanksgiving), and received an email saying it was on its way Wednesday. Seeing as it was just coming from Brooklyn Park, we headed that way after a few hours to find that it still had not showed up. They lost it somewhere in transit. Again, not Yuri's fault at all. We checked back much later that day and it was still not there. The vehicle showed up LATE Wednesday night, and by that point we were already looking elsewhere as we had sold them our van and needed a second vehicle. It's really unfortunate that they can't get vehicles back and forth more efficiently. I feel like we wasted their time and our own. Just the one my husband did tons of research looking for with all the features we desired. We traded in our GMC Denali Acadia. No hassles with our residency issues like we had had with a previous dealer in Wisconsin. We were helped by two different staff members (Robert and Maya), equally as friendly and the process was smooth and efficient. Recently did business from quite a distance with Patrick as our sales rep and was highly impressed with every aspect of the transaction. We needed to sell my elderly parents' 2010 RAV 4 as they no longer drive. The vehicle had low mileage yet had a lot of dings and such. Patrick did not make a big issue about the body work, focusing on the drive train and mileage. As a result he gave my folks a very fair offer and they left with a check and a courtesy ride home. I started my search online because I have such a busy work schedule. It was a lot of screen time to look through tons of inventory, but I wanted a specific type of vehicle. I found two different cars with two different dealerships before CarMax, but there customer service was slow and frustrating. I ended up taking some advice from my sister to go with CARMAX. Once I finally did, It was such a weight off my shoulders! I called and told EVAN what my ideal car had and 3 minutes later I had 4 cars to look at in my e-mail, and the Mitsubishi outlander was exactly what I needed. I came into the Maplewood location couple days later and was immediately greeted, helped and sent to Evan where he explained everything about my car choice thoroughly- He walked me over to his co-worker and we all finished the paperwork that allowed me to leave with my vehicle. Drove my 2014 Infiniti Q50 for a month, brought in for service, my vehicle was given back to me a month later after my warranty ended, my car died a week later and they won't take care of the problem without getting money out of me. $4000 (not including what was done when it was under warranty) worth of service done and my car isn't even running and they want to charge me more? They teared my engine down twice and later sends me an email stating there was no need for that service but I still have to pay them? We visited CarMax to get an appraisal of our Honda Accord we were thinking of selling. Offer came in higher than I expected, especially since the car had front bumper damage. Was going to sell for cash and drive my son's car while he's out of the country. Then unexpectedly sold that car via Craigslist. So, we went back to CarMax to see if appraisal offer could be used towards purchase of a vehicle there. Our salesperson Mya was more than helpful. We actually roamed their lot for a good half hour, checking out various SUV's (all vehicles have doors unlocked, so you can check out the interiors. We test drove a couple and settled on a '14 Ford Escape. Financing is completely transparent - we sat at Mya's computer while she input our information. She and the finance staff stayed 30-40 minutes past closing time to complete our deal. We are very happy with both the appraisal and price paid for our SUV. The most hassle free car shopping experience we've had. Do your homework, really look over the vehicle you want, inside and out, give it a good test drive, and buy with confidence from CarMax. read more

I only gave carmax one star because there was no option for no stars. We were greeted and taken to a desk to look at inventory via the internet. The very same website i could have used from home. The salesperson did not even know how to do something as simple as eliminate standard transmission vehicles. We picked 2 vehicles to test drive that were within our budget within 5 minutes. The sales associate proceeded to fill out paperwork for the next 15 minutes to allow for us to do a test drive. 30 minutes later the associate told us she found one of the two vehicles and that the other was at another location. She asked if we wanted to see the vehicle they had....Yes!?... 20 minutes later as we were walking out, (approximately 1 hour after arrival) the associate chased us into the parking lot saying vehicle #2 was frozen solid.? Its Minnesota and it was only 20°F. She said we should have gotten an appointment. Moral of the story? If you can use a website and make an appointment, maybe carmax is for you. If you want customer service and to look at a vehicle or two, don't go to this carmax. read more

While I appreciate the effort Jennifer, we will pass. We REPEATEDLY brought our car back for issues and over half of them were caused by Car Max. We asked them REPEATEDLY to fix what they damaged and to fix what was covered under the warranty. They did not. At one point, the woman in charge of the maintenance department got rude with my husband because he wasn't satisfied with their performance. They tell you that they would like a chance to rectify their actions but we gave them that chance over and over and over again. They failed us every time. Every time. We still are missing the cover to our fuse panel below the steering wheel and to date we have heard nothing from them and they lost it. Just tired and over dealing with their second rate service department. read more

Our sales person was fabulous! The vehicle we purchased was sub-par. It looked great online, but sadly had a lot of cosmetic flaws inside. CarMax offered to fix them and tried, but gluing leather back together with super glue is something I could have done at home...
