We sold two cars to carmax. We had good experience for both times. They have excellent customer service. They are very polite and efficient. The whole process took less than an hour. No hassle. You don't have to go through the headache of selling the car by owner. Even they make lots of money out of your used car, but they earn it.The whole facility is so big and so organized. They do business right. 4 years ago I sold them an infinity G35 coupe for 13000 dollars with very low mileage( 30K). They post it on their website in two days, with beautiful pictures of the car for $19999. And they sold it in 2 days. That is how fast they move. They has very good business. I took my car in for the manufacturer's recommended Service A which is essentially an oil change and checking fluid levels. The dealer price for this service is $249.00 and CarMax was charging $98.00. I made an appointment for 8 am on a Friday. The check in process was fast and efficient and everyone working there could not have been friendlier. I observed the service manager personally communicating with each person who was waiting for updates about their car in a very professional and caring way. He told me that they did not have the oil filter in stock for my car (even thought they thought they did) and that he already sent someone to pick one up and that it was being installed. For the extra time needed $50.00 was taken off of my service charge. I ended up getting my Service A and a car wash for 1/4 of the dealer price. I would recommend the service department at the Glencoe CarMax over any dealer or car repair shop, hands down. read more

I went here looking to buy a car for myself with my dad, we set a price range that we wanted and the lady that helped us went over what we wanted to pay for a car, I picked out a car that I wanted that was at a different carmax that she was going to ship out to us for free, but she was very pushy, I set up to test drive the car a week from when we were there so they had enough time to bring it in and through that whole week I had about 10 text messages from her confirming that i was coming to test drive the car. She made it seem like she didn't care if I was happy with the car but as long as she was able to make a sale. The night before I was supposed to test drive the car I went to another dealership in libertyville, it was a Nissan Volkswagen and Kia dealer I ended up buying from that dealer because they were friendly and didn't rush me at all and had the perfect car for me at a good price. This place isn't a good place to go shopping for a car. The price they sell the cars at can't be negotiated which sucks because at any other dealer you can find the same exact car and get the price lower than at carmax. read more

When the manager was asked about the pricing, he became hostile and hid behind the time Carmax has been doing business and their policy of no haggle pricing. Why would I drive 70 miles to look at a vehicle that is so exorbitantly over priced? It started out fine, all smiles and what not. Then Allin tried to jam me w a warranty. I knew this is where they screw ya so I was hesitant. Allin told me I had 30 days to cancel if I wanted. He told me the refund would come off the back end of the loan but I could refinance no problem. WHAT HE FAILED TO MENTION IS THAT IT IS ILLEGAL TO REFINANCE IN HOUSE. YOU HAVE TO SHOP FOR A NEW RATE AND COULD GET SCREWED LIKE I DID. Even better when I confronted him he's not man enough to admit he either screwed up or lied. That's what upstanding men do. Worst car dealership ...DO NOT SHOP here .. I am glad i didnot and heres why. I was looking to buy a car and found one at their Florida location and at the same time saw $499 quote for shipping from there to Glencoe location. So I went to Glencoe location to enquire more about the transfer of car from Florida to here as i was skeptical about buying a car without seeing it. At the store I was helped by Steve Gillespie and i asked him about the transfer and what if i dont like something with the car which could not be seen in picutres and boy .. was he helpful about explaining the whole thing and how there cars are inspected and they buy the best cars ..he even told me a story where a customer refused to buy a car due to minor scratches underneath the car .. long story short he made me believe that i will definitely like the car and with that said i paid 499 dollars fopr the transfer , which they insist on getting in advance. After waiting for 10 days or so the car arrived and i got a call from Steve about the same. So on a saturday i went there to look at would be new car and i should say it looked nice .. but on closer inspection i found certain issues with the cars and to name couple ..there was a ding on the door and one of the doors was repainted ... when I pointed this out to steve ..he called his manager Jim Levis and thats when things got bad. At first steve was very nice but when i mentioned that i dont want to pay 30,000 dollars for a car with door repainted he started telling me how it meets Carmax standards and all and a normal person can' even tell that the door is repainted. when i insisted on getting my money back he became rude and literally walked away from me.. i was standing there complaining to nobody. All this time Jim levis kept reminding me how he has spent 15mins with me on the issue .. whereas they wer eOK to spend 45 miutes before they got my money ... finally i walked out of the store and do i need to mention that i never bought the car from them .. i figured i am OK with losing 500 bucks instead of putting 30,000 at risk with these people..i have filed a complaint with BBB though. It was a couple months ago when I first started looking for a car. There was a really nice car in Milwaukee that I wanted to check out. I called CarMax in Glencoe and spoke to one of the sales people there who made arrangements to bring it to the suburban dealership at no charge. I was about to leave the state and wanted to see if the car I saw online was the right one for me. I was ready to buy it if it was the right one and drive it to my new hometown. It took awhile for the car to come in and I also wanted to see some other models in addition to the one that got brought down for me to look at. After test driving a few models I test drove the BMW that I was mainly there to see. We left the parking lot without incident however during the test drive I discovered a problem with the brakes as we left the expressway on the offramp. I went on the expressway a second time just to be sure there was actually an issue. Sometime during this test drive the sales person told me that I could buy the car as it is and drive it over 1000 miles to my new hometown and once I got there I could then have it fixed. This is not the thing to tell someone. I know you want to make a sale however safety is essential. While I was there the salesperson had the car brought into service however I didn't have any time to see if they would be able to fix it while I waited. I left CarMax that day really not happy that a sale comes above personal safety. I never went back to see if they did get that car fixed. It would've been much better if somebody had test driven that car before I even arrived to work out any apparent issues. This makes me question the true quality of inspections taking place at Carmax throughout the country. There needs to be measures in place for a car to be truly ready for a test drive before one occurs. I also recommend training for sales associates to learn to put customer safety ahead of profit. read more

Bought a car from carmax back in December of 2010. had a great experience and ended up purchasing an extended warranty on the car due to the fact that it was an '08 and I didn't want to take any risks in case of a problem. Fast forward to June '12. The car started to act up and would lose power horribly after the motor had warmed up and was driven for about 25 mins. Looked up the problem and researched and found out that the problem was common and would have been covered by the warranty that was purchased. Took the car back up to Carmax for repair. I described the problem to the repair manager and he agreed to look into it. Received a call multiple days later stating that they were going to take the car to the local Suzuki dealership b/c somehow the car was still under it's original warranty. The car was taken to 3 different dealerships all over the Chicagoland area and each time, the car was taken in, looked at and then we were told that that particular dealership didn't do warranty work, after both Carmax and myself were told that they did. After 2 weeks of the car travelling around,a dealership was finally located righ back near the Carmax it was at. We were told that they would do the warranty work and look at it. All this time, Carmax was maintaining a minimum of communication. Sure, they would call everyday but the news would not change and there was no offer to help solve the problem any further. Eventually all my communication regarding the car was through the Service Manager at the Suzuki dealership. After 3 weeks of the car being at the dealer ship and them going back and forth with "offsite Suzuki technicians" the warranty claim was denied even with proof of the problem and independent evidence from others that had driven the car. It was claimed that the problem was from "lack of maintenance" and "oil sludge buildup" possibly from the previous owner (I have all maintenance records). Now, I'm stuck with a car that I cannot trust due to the fact I'm the only repair was to "clean out the engine". I guess honesty in repair and helping out customers first went out the window and the bottom line of paying for warranty work out of their budget came before. I don't think I'll purchase a car from Carmax again and if I need repairs on my car again, i'll go somewhere else b/c I honestly don't think I can trust Carmax although my first experience with them was great. read more

Went here to get a car I want to sell appraised. Walked in and was told that the wait was a few and they took my name, and directed us to the playroom. We waited 40 minutes. Is that really how your customer service works?! 40 minutes just to basically be acknowledged, not even having started the appraisal process. They take the car to appraise it and we decide to look at vehicles in the lot since we obviously have a vehicle to replace now. We're just strolling around looking and a dealer comes up and asks what we're interested in. We state we are just looking and he continues to follow us. To me that was awkward. After awhile he says, "You're appraisal is probably done." Must've got tired of following us around. We go inside, sit in a cubicle space and he reviews what they looked at for our car, then shows us the offer. $200, really?! I've had a completely ruined car sold to a junk yard for more than that and this car isn't a clunker by any means. We walked out pretty quickly. He asked if we still wanted the car we were interested in. Um $200 isn't a down payment and they jack up their prices anyways. ON to the next.... read more

before i physically went into carmax, i did my research online. i knew exactly what i wanted...(ladies it helps to go in a dealership being knowledgeable) i already knew that i would use my own credit union to finance my new car. however i was also trading in a 2005 nissan that was in terrific condition along with very low miles. another dealership(i will talk about them later) offered me 7,000 for my car! the blue book value is at least 9,000. carmax appraised my car for 11,000. well, i am a proud owner of a jeep commander limited.. with very low miles,i added a few toys and purchased a extended warranty. the salesperson was good. my only complaint is that carmax get a little more familiar with other on the job credit unions read more
