When asked for more details, they discussed further amongst themselves and quickly realized that "it's not as bad as they thought" and again offered the $700. They been sued last year for this same exact issue of not doing the 125 point check of every car they sell them as is! My experience at CarMax was quite disappointing. The vehicle I purchased needed some work, which was frustrating, but what really stood out was the service. I was told I would have my car in 5 days, but it took 2 weeks to get everything sorted out. To make matters worse, they removed the remote starter without even asking me. Additionally, the wheels on the car weren't the ones shown online, which felt misleading. I've reached out multiple times and keep being told that someone will call me back, but I'm still waiting (4 weeks). Overall, this was one of the worst experiences I've had when buying a vehicle. I expected much better service. Once CarMax posted a number to call and I contact their customer relations, more was done to help my experience, tho I would not say hassle free. My husband and I brought a Chrysler Pacifica from Norwood, Ma CarMax in February 2025. It did not have an owners manual with it. I tried purchasing the manual from Chrystal which was a terrible experience as I could not sing on to my account to purchase the manual online. Since Danvers CarMax is closer to us, we went there. It turned out to be a good choice. Joe Graves, in the Service Dept, not only advised us what to do to purchase the book, but he emailed me the link directly so I would have the correct information. After two months, we finally had the book. We are currently being reimbursed by CarMax for the $74.00 for the manual. While we were there I asked Pedro in the Service Dept for a quick tutorial on the mechanics of programming the radio, car phone, etc. Pedro was above and beyond helpful. He took time from his break to give us a 20 minute class on the computer screen. We went home with a better knowledge of our new car and an appreciation for the fact that GREAT customer service can still be found. I am sorry the others had such a bad experience with CarMax, but we found it to be the exact opposite. BUYER BEWARE!!!! ACTIVE, UNRESOLVED ISSUE. Good "deal" on an out-of-state purchase. Nothing but different stories from each person upon delivery. This location does not seem to care about the customer in the least. They assured nothing else was needed after an initial visit following delivery. Many days of work were missed and schedule adjustments made to accommodate CarMax, with no consideration. Management made repeated promises and did not follow through. Noone has honored their word and the lack of communication/empty promises/run-around you get is sure to raise your blood pressure. Formal complaints and potential lawsuit costs on the horizon for this location due to this active and unresolved issue. Car has undisclosed, hazardous (anti-freeze blowing into the vehicle-deemed dangerous by a certified BMW mechanic) problems that only BMW should be trusted to repair. Carmax refuses to "go above and beyond" to ensure their customers come back. It certainly seems as though they do not care about the safety of their consumer, the customer's time and adjustments made, with their "get here now" (3 times in the same day!) approach or building a network that could bring them much more business. Unacceptable so far, and unresolved as of the time of this post. Will update this review if they make good on their word. As of now, I have no idea how they're even in business. I recently worked with Carmax in Westborough MA. I received a quote after about 3 minutes worth of filling out forms (on line). It was about 8 1/2 % higher than Carvana had quoted me. Rather than deal with the scammers on Facebook Marketplace, I decided to sell to Carmax. I drove my truck to Westborough, checked in and watched the system work. I was extremally skeptical about it and kept waiting for the high pressure sales pitch to buy a new car or for the low ball offer after they got me in the door. Neither thing happened. They inspected my truck and about 15 minutes later they came to me with the exact same offer I had received on line. Not a penny less. Do not purchase from this dealership if you're getting a car transferred from another location, and/or if you expect there to be an open line of communication from the sales team to the service department. Although I pointed out that the camera used when reversing the car was broken with the representative, Brooke, when we went on a test drive, and then clearly articulated this problem half a dozen times more via email to make sure they had it serviced, I encountered the same alert the day after I purchased it. I then tried to get a hold of Brooke and her supervisor in sales, Erasmo, and both times was transferred directly to the Service Department. I spoke with John Moriarty (who was terrific actually) and he told me that they never received a service request for the backup video camera from the sales team. My brain nearly exploded. So I decided to take it to BMW to get it looked at, and they told me that the car had been in a serious collision where the wire between the back tire and the bumper had actually been severed. (Note: one of the biggest selling points of the car was that it was "accident free.") After getting my car repaired, I tried and failed the MA Inspection four times because the On-Board Diagnostic system, even after driving it over 500 miles, kept reporting that it was "Not Ready" to be tested. I've since received and completed four surveys from CarMax asking me to rate my experience and write about what happened, and have never received a follow-up or an apology for the experience I had. I've continued to tell friends and family who mention CarMax that they should stay as far away as possible. To avoid a headache, you should do the same. read more

We made an appointment and were there on time. So we waited... and waited... and waited until someone finally did the paperwork for us. Then we were told it would just be a few minutes until we got our car. Those few minutes turned out to be well over an hour... different people were trying to find out what was going on and no one seemed to have an answer. Waited about 10 minutes, was asked if the quote we received online was agreeable and it was would be be selling it today, we said yes. They test drove the car and offered us $800.00 more then what we expected, she went over all the paperwork with us, issued us a check and off we went. we spent about an hour in total from arriving to receiving our check, overall a very good experience. Bought a car for over 20k. Received only one key out of two given, because one of them was for the wrong vehicle. I did not test my keys right away like I should have and that's on me, but to be honest it was the last thing on my mind. Called the service department and they told me to go to Ekeys for cars and then basically send Carmax the bill after, well i did that but they could not help because the internals of the key was for a completely different vehicle. The sales man was every confused very step of the way. He constantly need to go get help or "check" with someone. Then he tells me it takes Geico 3-5 hours to send back the insurance stamp. I usually don't post anything bad for organizations as I truly really appreciate our economy. Especially during these times of folks really needing assistance financially. All I can say is this place is absolutely horrendous. The customer service is subpar. But listen most of the employees are kids trying to figure out what they want to do in their lives so I always give a benefit of the doubt. But here is my tale with this operation in Danvers: I get my truck appraised. Appraisal is fine. No complaints. The problem came to the actual sale of the vehicle. I knew my title would take some time to come in the mail due to post office delays with COVID. So I called ahead to Carmax customer service and was told Massachusetts is a "E Title" state. So I go on on August 19th and was told face to face they cannot buy the vehicle because my RMV status for my title was listed in red as "returned." Which means I moved before I could receive the title and forgot to update my address at the time. TOTALLY my fault. So I call to get my title mailed which take 7-10 business days from Monday 8/23 so I didnt know when I will get it. HOWEVER, I log into my RMV account and the title says "Active" in green which is exactly what the manager said I needed. TO EVEN MAKE SURE a step further before I go there 8/26 (last day of my appraisal-I am moving so I need to get this car sold), I called CarMax in Danvers again. I told them the story explicitly and they assured me (and put me on hold to even triple check with the branch) that I was fine. But low and behold, I was told I need the physical title. Which is fine, but why am I being told different things both face to face and over the phone before I physically drive there. It is either they dont give a sh*t or they are incompetent. Either way, don't waste your time with these individuals and go to KBB to redeem your cash offer with a dealership. I dont know how Carmax operates as an organization, but this branch is absolutely horrendous not just from an operational perspective but just from a mental capacity standpoint. read more

I got a quote online from CarMax that was much more then the trade-in value I thought i could get from the dealer of the car I was purchasing and also $7,000 to $8,000 higher than KBB trade-in value. I was suspicious of the quote and figured they would try and negotiate it down, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I arrived at the CarMax in Danvers, MA 20 minutes early for the appointment i made online. They took me early and started the process. I waited in their clean waiting area while the sent someone out to look at my truck. 15 minutes after arriving there they simply said, we will honor the online quote. 20 minutes after that i had a bank check in hand. Every person, from the salesperson that greeted me at the door, to the person that looked at the truck, and the business person that did the paperwork and handed me the check were very polite, professional and a pleasure. WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to sell their car rather then negotiate a trade-in at the dealer they are purchasing a car and all the games they play. Yes, you dont get to deduct the value of the trade-in from the purchase price for sales tax, but I received 3 times that potential tax savings in a higher price. Very happy with the process and the people at CarMax. I dont normally write reviews but I couldn't wait to tell folks about this experience. read more

My wife and I went to visit Carmax this last weekend to have them appraise her car -- it was not a pleasant experience. My wife made an appointment well in advance, filled out the paperwork online, hoping that would make things go a bit smoother once we arrived. No such luck; when we got there we were told to wait in the lobby, which was definitely more crowded than I would have liked. We waited... and waited... after 45 minutes someone finally came by to help; we took him out to look over the car. After that it was another 15 minutes parked in the waiting area (with even more people this time, eek). Finally an associate came over, took us to her office and showed us the offer number, which was basically a low-ball-- less than what a couple of dealers had offered for trade in, and well below blue book. In other words: a big waste or our time. We went to an independent dealer/buyer later that afternoon and sold the car on the spot for about 20% more than the Carmax offer, much better experience. Can't see myself going back to Carmax any time soon. read more

I would just like to personally let the public know.. DO NOT SHOP AT CARMAX! I have gotten the run around for one week now and still no car. They have made several mistakes that has cost me unnecessary stress and straight up wasted my time. None of these issues were even attempted to be corrected. Said "managers" never reached out as promised. The title to the car I was set to buy was "lost"? I was left on hold for unacceptable lengths of time and disconnected or told "so and so has gone home for the day". Oh and to boot, CarMax also "lost" my personal information that was sent to the bank lender. Once the information was re-processed to the lender, CarMax gave them THE WRONG VIN NUMBER. CarMax has remained non apologetic throughout this whole process and currently still I am left in the dark with no answers, a pit in my stomach, and a massive headache. I now am at Nissan Kelly of Lynnfield. They accepted me as a new customer right away, I was able to test drive the same (but actually better) car that I was hopeful to buy from CarMax, and will be driving it off the lot as soon as paperwork is completed.
