Not a fan of coffee shops in general, but once in awhile I have a craving for something sweet and probably bad for me. After being treated to some hot cocoa while waiting for the Hollidazzle to start, and not getting any because J drank it all, we decided to stop in and get some more. The lady taking orders was very friendly and absolutely delightful. She seemed to enjoy her job and was quite popular as many who came in after us seemed to know her and enjoy talking with her. The milk chocolate hot cocoa is quite the treat! Wow! Really good! I watched the person making it put on the whip cream and little chocolate sprinkles and couldn't wait for her to hand it over. This stuff is the shiat! The cups remind me of an LL Bean sweater.

The people have always been very friendly! Overall the store could use some TLC. The place is small and it's very loud/noisy. Usually busy and can be hard to find a spot to sit. The high top tables are great, but stools with backs on them would be so much nicer. My biggest complaint is how the corporation takes care of this store. Examples A & B: the cushion covers in the booths of the two perfect corners in the store. (You know the perfect corner...the one where you off to the side and are safe and secure but can still look out at the rest of the store?) For me, the customer experience is everything. These destroyed cushions kill the experience for me.

    Bacon egg and cheese sandwich

So I work nearby and come here fairly often, overall wonderful service, quick, very kind employees. However the past two times I've come here and ordered the bacon egg and cheese sandwich, and both times the bacon was not fully cooked, but this time it was completely uncooked. I ended up just taking the bacon off, I'm not a very picky person. I never leave reviews but I'm writing this mostly to inform the people who work here so hopefully they can be more conscientious of things like this :) once again, great service, lovely employees I would totally still recommend coming here!!

    Love the cup. So Minnesota...!

Great coffee, but the table outside was super wobbly. Unbelievable and establishment in 2017 would still have a wobbly table. 4 stars.

I've since removed myself due to how popular the shop got and recently had an opportunity to revisit. I'm so glad I did! What I once knew as a tiny, cozy shop has expanded into an entire new section directly behind the original space allowing for more guests to visit. This is fantastic! I know the original owners of Cafe Astoria have stepped down, yet I'm pleased to say under the new ownership that many of the original decor and items remain the same from awhile back. The biggest transformations are the larger space, added painted mural, flexible ordering system where you can now order from a QR code at your table or walk up the register, expanded menu that includes brunch all day and items such as breakfast sandwiches and avocado toast. What went from a small crepe and specialty coffeehouse has truly grown. Don't worry the crepes and coffees are all still on the menu. I had the mango smoothie bowl and a mushroom and Swiss crepe - both were outstanding. I even had an iced pumpkin chia. Yum! I look forward to returning. The hospital workers are so lucky to be close to this establishment.

Wifi is good and some people WFH here, but it does get crowded fast on the weekends! The menu is expansive, but the crepes and drinks seem to be the main attractions. They have unique espresso and matcha options, including a secret menu and seasonal items. They do tend to be on the sweeter side. I always get the dirty matcha! My friend enjoyed the campfire mocha and creme brulee in the pasr. The crepes are pretty good - thin, but still soft as crepes should be! I also like the variety. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu here!

There is a decent amount of seating for a place in its location which was nice so I could visit for a couple hours with my friend. The bakery section is so delicious that there should be an addiction warning taped to the pastry display case. They've got all different sorts of coffee orders too, so if you need your morning fix, you're set. The place is always crowded, which is a sign that it's a well-loved hangout and eatery of the community. However, it does mean that you could be standing for a little while until a table opens up. Space always does open though, it's just that sometimes patience is required. However, it's always worth it to enjoy the good vibes and delicious food. Free parking can also be hard to find as most street side parking is full all hours of the day. Be prepared to walk a little ways or to pay the small fee to park behind the building. This is the heart of the Twin Cities though, so this should not be surprising. If I could give this place fifty stars instead of five, I would. The only reason I had to stop eating here was developing celiac disease. For those of you with free will and without gluten troubles, definitely make your way here. I cannot say enough good things about this gem.

While the space was cute, relaxed and inviting, the service was... not so much. The guy at the front counter barely looked up from his screen, and let's just say, enthusiasm wasn't on the menu. Definitely not the warm welcome we hoped for and very unfortunate. BUT--shoutout to my bestie for treating us to a coffee date, because the drinks were solid. I had the piña colada cold brew, which was super sweet at first, but after a quick stir, it hit just right. My bestie went with the strawberries & cream cold brew and a matcha lemonade. Both were surprisingly good, but the matcha lemonade really stood out to me; so refreshing and unique. All in all, Backstory was a convenient and tasty pre-concert stop. If the service matched the drinks, this would've easily been a 5-star visit.

But the food is average to meh. Likewise with the service. For $35 entrees and $20 cocktails, I expect better. A small example: if your menu is going to offer "frites" with bearnaise instead of plain old "French fries," it might be a good idea to actually serve them with a side of bearnaise rather than plain old ketchup, which came with our meals (even if the ketchup comes in a little ramekin rather than a bottle). In other ways, as well, our meal didn't walk the talk that the menu suggested. It felt overpriced for dishes where lots of salt and fat seemed to take the place of truly complex, well-harmonized flavors. Service: at the time I made our reservation, I referenced that my party would be celebrating a family birthday. There was no acknowledgment of this by the restaurant's staff at any time during our visit. Even little things like this matter. After being seated, no one poured water for our group. Appears that this is a "self serve" thing; if you're thirsty, pour your own water. We waited at least 10 minutes for our server after being seated. After our meal was served, our server did not come back to check in until it was time to ask if we were ready for dessert. We decided to skip dessert. We probably won't be coming back anytime soon.
