Caribe is one of the best dominican restaurants on the north shore. i've never eaten in the restaurant so i can't speak on the ambiance, but i've gotten take-out dozens of times over 8 years. if you call to place an order, they only speak spanish. i recently ordered through ubereats and was pleasantly surprised at how much food we got. i ordered 2 chicken stew plates, one with white rice + black beans, and one with rice of the day, and an extra side of rice and beans, plus one beef and four chicken pastelitos. add potato salad + extra chicken sauce! dinner was to serve 4 people and i was worried i didn't get enough since it was only two plates, but we had more than enough. the chicken came with 4 thighs and 2 drumsticks, and everything was absolutely delicious as always. on ubereats there is no option to add a side of beans that aren't black, so it would be nice to have that option. also my order was $41 but $60 due to delivery fees + tip, so you're better off coming in if you can. Worked in Peabody for 2 years and this was my favorite spot by far. The guisados are top notch and their mixed rices are great too. Staff are 50/50 on speaking English but it's a bar-style restaurant so pointing at what you want is the way to go. Don't bother calling in, they have an awful phone and whoever answers it makes the Bill & Bob's drive-thru feel homey. Front of house is polite though. The online ordering through uber works fine if you're feeling shy. Got their salami & cheese platter once and it was pretty good. Coming from a Puerto Rican family and married to a Dominican, I was very excited when I saw a Dominican restaurant had opened up half way between work and home. After passing Caribe a few times, I finally decided to drop by on a Saturday night, and the experience was okay. The restaurant itself was nicer looking inside then I thought it would look. They have a few tables for people to sit and enjoy their food while listening to Telemundo news overhead. The back half of their restaurant houses the food counter, with lots of trays of various meat dishes, sides, and fritura. They had typical items like rice (white, yellow, and congri), chicken (pollo guisado and chicharron de pollo), pork (chops and pernil), plantains (maduros and tostones), yuca, fish, empanadas, etc. They definitely have a wide variety to please any particular taste requests, assuming it is in stock and ready for serving (which at 6:30 pm on Saturday it was not!) You can order the food as a meal or by weight, and it was all very reasonably priced with big portions. The food itself was okay. Kind of like your Tia who cooks okay made you dinner, but no where near as delicious as your Abuela's cooking. It would satisfy your craving if you wanted some Caribbean Spanish food, but it was also a bit underwhelming, and made you feel like maybe you should have just cooked your own rice and beans. The staff were friendly enough and spoke both English and Spanish. They mentioned that they offer delivery, which was a nice surprise, and are open for breakfast too. I would give this 0 stars if it was an option. I placed an order on Uber eats. Food arrived warm. However it was not what I ordered. I figured, no big deal, people make mistakes, hard times right now in the world. I'll just try this, I'm hungry. Then I discovered that half my order was missing. So obviously I didn't want to be charged for things I didn't receive. I will willing to look past the mistakes but not that. So I called to explain that I wanted a refund for items not received. They then told me they didn't speak English and hung up on me. I called back 3 times after that and still they kept saying no English. Well the 3rd time I called, the workers are in the background yelling ENGLISH profanities and then hung up on me again. I decided I wasn't getting anywhere so I let the issue go. I'll take the loss. Went it and asked for a combo for 4 people. She went from $24 to $40 because i wanted a different meat. Aside for overcharging she gave enough food for 2 people. The food was spicy and cold. She didnt give us plates or cups. The combo came with a drink and a salad. There was no dressing for the salad and only had a nasty lemon ginger ale. I would not go back to this place. this Place is a joke they are too busy talking to each other to listen to customers and I personally saw them A good size plate yo another Hispanic customer and gave me a the saddest piece of chicken from the pollo guisando I'm sure It's because I didn't look Hispanic (but maybe I'm wrong but definitely my plate wasn't woth the $12 I spent on it ) i tried to give them another try and my order was wrong twice. this last time I desperately needed to food as it was to feed my kids and I was busy with appointments I tried to call and the left me on hold then eventually kept clearing me. On Dec 30th right before I left to head out of town for a few day and spend a nice New Years Eve kicking back and enjoying dinner from this place that I had passed on many many occasions. I was finally excited to try them out and was very disappointment when I called and was told that the dinner item only consisted of just the meat and rice and beans would be additional, not a problem i thought as I was amped to try them out. I ordered the baked chicken with rice and beans. I then ordered Pork Mofongo and side of plantains. $28 dollar paid after a 45 minute wait. Before I left the restaurant, I took a peek in the two bags given. 1 was to check to make sure I had enough bean sauce since I had gotten the mofongo and also I love the beans over the rice and chicken. When looking into the bags I saw two dixie cups (the size you get at the dentist office) which I presumed to be the beans so I ordered another just incase $2 I needed a little more. On my way and with the smell of the food driving us crazy (about 1 1/2hr drive) to my home away for the next several days I go. After settling in we grab the food to warm up since the long drive would have made it cold. What a huge disappointment. 1st the only good thing in the entire meal was the white rice-cant screw that up too much and the beans once you stirred it, plantain which when ordered i said fried were indeed fried but not the green ones i was used to and not many in the container. Ok I let this go. I then opened the baked chicken i had been craving-HUGE disappointment. It was the leg quarter of the chicken which was expected but and absolutely no meat only the bone as if you had cut off pieces of the meat and only left the bone. The drumstick part was only part that had meat. The mofongo was not at all like I have had in the past, even drowning it in bean sauce did nothing for how dry it was. I can honestly say that this is one place that will never see me back and If asked by friends abut I would say stay away. I am very sorry I had not taken a picture of this disappointing meal.
