Was craving Caribbean food and decided to give Caribbean corner a try! This is located in the downtown area of Fairfax, there's no seating indoors so this is definitely a grab and go place. The menu has some varieties of options to pick from! I ordered the Jerk pulled pork and curry chicken. I was really hoping to try to jerk chicken but it wasn't ready when I came so I opted for the pulled pork! Current chicken was very flavorful and had definitely the curry taste to it (not like Indian or Asian curry though). The jerk pulled pork surprisingly had a Smokey taste and the sauce was flavorful! Finally got lucky and got in when they were open! I know their hours are unpredictable and I've tried multiple times to catch them but I was just so happy to get in the door. My barber recommended I try their jerk pork since it was a Friday and he described it as melt in your mouth. It took a second to see if anyone was even in the kitchen but someone must have heard me and took my order. Only took about 5ish minutes to get my order (only one in line). Food traveled very well, still hot when I got home. That pork is no joke, it was crispy, fatty, tender, and had a really good amount of jerk seasoning on it. Came with a load of rice and peas and some plantain. Really almost two regular sized meals only for under $12 (for the large). There's one measley booth where u can wait or eat, but I would HIGHLY suggest taking it to go. When I last came, it was 100 degrees outside and no air was on. It was 12:30pm and they had sold out of all their beef patties, unacceptable. Prices are super cheap and the food is always good. Not sure how clean the kitchen is, but I have a feeling it ain't the cleanest. On my first visit, I wanted the callalou but they didn't have it that day. My guess is they make the food the day before at some grandma's house, then bring it in in the morning. So far, I haven't gotten sick, so that's good right?! LOL! I finally made it Caribbean Corner and dammit, why did it take me this long?! Hands down the best Jamaican oxtail with rice and peas you'll have in the DMV. And I may even extend that. This little hole in the wall rivals most of the popular Caribbean spots in MD and infamous Jamaica House in Richmond (you heard me). The oxtail falls off the bone, and in spite of the thick ring of fat, it is mostly meat, a good sign of its quality. It looks braised and the bed of rice and peas on which the meat is served soaks up all its juices, creating a deliciously sticky texture. Combined with the perfectly ripe plantains and strips of stewed cabbage, and you have a meal that is literally to die for. Not spicy, not overpowered by a heavy tomato sauce or other seasonings. Just reeeeally quality, well-made food. At $8, the small order is crazy affordable (especially for oxtail) and yet plenty of food for one person. The nastiest jerk I have ever eaten. It was all bad it was very salty and not jerk, I'm from NY and I would advise not to eat the jerk chicken. Tender, seasoned, juicy, succulent, craveable. As a carribbean cook myself its perfect only missing pepper, so just ask! And I'm not recommending you ask for extra pepper if you go around thinking habanero is hot. But I must say the portions are perfect for what you pay for. Limited menu items due to covid. Fast, efficient service even with one person at the counter and 1 other person in the kitchen. The entree comes in 2 sizes: small and large. I think large is a good portion if you are hungry. I would recommend rice & peas with the entree for $.25 more. It also comes with fried plantains and sauteed cabbage. I know everyone raved about the oxtail and it truly was amazing. The meat was so juicy and tender. It just slid off the bone. The sauce, which was also incorporated into the rice, was so flavorful. The rice just absorbed all the juiciness from the meat. That was the second highlight, other than the meat. The chicken curry, which had milder flavor, was also a great sidekick to the oxtail. They use black meat of the chicken (chicken thigh, drumsticks). The chicken was so tender. The yellow curry sauce was delicious! Now onto the beef patty--it runs out fast, so please get your hands on them! I couldn't get enough. It's a pastry with pie-crust texture on the outside and delicious ground beef on the inside. I was looking for something new to try near my office and wow what a gem. I pass "the Corner" everyday on my way to and from work but have never thought to stop in but I am so glad that I did today. The quality and taste of the food more than makes up for the restaurant's less than inviting exterior. This is a super small restaurant. The seating is very limited and it looks like most people use them for carryout. The staff (cashier and food server-- same guy) was friendly and helpful. He guided me through the choices and helped me to make my selections. I had the jerk chicken, coco bread and rice and peas. All were delicious. The chicken was tender and very flavorful. It was fall off the bone moist. Notably, jerk chicken is by its nature spicy and this chicken was a perfect blend, it was spicy but not so much so to make it inedible. The fried plaintains were delicious and I highly recommend the coco bread. I will relay the server's words to me when I was making my selections, "It's all Good" and I truly believe that it is. This eatery leaves something to be imagined: its dingy, dusty, and in need of an old fashioned scrub down but in the words of my favorite Jamaican, "Sweet Thrilla from Manila!" I stopped by last night with my siblings and we each got a small order of their main menu offerings to share -- curry goat, curry chicken, brown stew chicken, jerk chicken, and ox tail. The jerk chicken was wonderfully spicy and filled my mouth with a taste of the island. The brown stew chicken and curry chicken were tender and the perfect meal for a crisp, fall day. The curry goat, was not gamey at all and was quickly devoured by even the pickiest of eaters at the table. The only problem I had was with the oxtail. I've been eating ox tail since I was a wee baby and this was NOT ox tail. The restaurant skimped out and used what I am guessing is a neck bone. Presumably they share the parking lot, but you're better off finding a spot in a nearby lot or along the streets. Friendly service was happy to point out two nearby parks where I could eat my meal in nice weather. One communal table inside in front of a TV, within sight of the kitchen. A small order is appropriate for a conservative appetite or broad curiosity, I'd happily go large next time since they're so affordable. Curry is mild, goat is as tender as can be expected. Oxtails are sliced thin and yields to plastic fork pressure. Plaintains were cooked through, not too dry. Tomatoes were fresh even if they weren't super ripe, and the cabbage is nothing to write home about. Loved the rice and beans even more with saucing soaked in. Coco bread (sp?) was warm, semi sweet, and chewy. This is primarily a carryout spot so don't expect a large sit down restaurant. There is one small table and a few chairs, so you wait until your order is called up. Once your order arrives, the gentleman shows you what you ordered to make sure its the way you want it. I really like that. Most carry-outs I've been to, they package everything up and you have to check it yourself, or you forget to check it and once you get home, you wish you had! Per usual, I was on the hunt to try a new restaurant via Yelp during a particularly uneventful Saturday and came across this page with high rated marks and only (1) dollar sign. Yes, let's go! Caribbean Corner is a hole in the wall tucked inside the bustling college town of George Mason University. Unlike surrounding businesses, this restaurant is not fronting the major streets nor have a storefront for pedestrians to peak through. You go behind one of the stores, tread through a few steps, and open two doors to see the cashier. There's not a lot of seating- 3 tables, 3 chairs and 1 bench; therefore, most people order to go. We ordered a vegetable patty, large curry chicken, and my favorite- large oxtails. Fortunately, we were able to snag one of the free tables and 2 chairs. Reggae music serenaded the kitchen and the music spilled through to the dining area. The first glimpse of my oxtail plate, I knew this was going to be good. What I didn't know was- it was going to be the best I've ever had. The to go container had the bed of rice and peas (which really means rice and beans), cabbage and carrots and plantains on each of the smaller compartments. But behold- the beauty on the plate, the star of the dish- the oxtails drenched with savory brown sauce! Oxtails are expensive at the grocery stores so I was enlightened with the 6 piece portion I received for $16. My plastic cutlery pulled the tender, juicy pieces of meat from the bone. But then I remembered- these are oxtaIls, you have to pick it up just like one would enjoy a fried chicken, pizza, taco or burger- touch is part of the experience. Parking is a little strange around the actual place, but if you drive further down, there's a free square-shaped lot next to the parking garage. Not the best jerk chicken I've had, but not bad for the price and the amount of food they give you. They really do pack it in the small container and throw in some plantains, so that's nice. There's only a few spots for parking right outside their place, but there's a free public parking lot across the street with ample parking. Ok so I told the ladies if the food was bad they would hear about it if it was good they would hear about it as well. I went on yesterday after my flight coming from work. I kind of was a bit scared by the inside of the place and the fact that no one was there on a busy Saturday night with all the other restaurant's booming. Now as for someone who is a cook myself and have been in the customer service and restaurant industry for years. Here is my honest review. The food was great even though it was piping hot meaning one thing is has been sitting there and had to be microwaved never the less the oxtail and the jerk chicken was amazing as well as the rice and peas. I wanted to order a patty but the patty holder had no lights and the patty looked like it has been sitting there for hours i was not going to take that chance. The customer service was off the wall ladies both was awesome and I give them a 5 out of 5. Now here comes the negative and this is all with love. Maybe its the location or something when I first walked in the place did not fit the atmosphere outside. The inside gave dark and lonely I would hope the owners if they see this would apply for a grant and do a grand opening again or something to show case our great Jamaican food. as I stated the food was awesome and I know there could be more foot traffic year round if they had a good person pushing for better marketing. The place is tucked in the alley behind the main strip and is reminiscent of what people call "a hole in the wall". We ended up driving to another restaurant that was in good order and open. I'd like to rate the food but I didn't get the chance to try it. I'm not a fan of businesses that don't advertise their closing hours correctly or just choose not to open on certain days.
