I'm glad I found Merrill, he's done 3 autolite 2100s for me and they all have been perfect. Takes a couple of weeks and he charges top dollar. While I admit I have not yet had the Carburetor Refactory build me a carb, I found their staff very helpful. I discovered them when looking for a replacement flange gasket for my carburetor at an O'reilly's/Kragen in El Cerrito. Paul from the Refactory also works there, and he was gracious enough to discuss the issues I was having with my Rochester 2G for a few minutes. A few days later, still in search of a replacement gasket, I called the Carburetor Refactory on a Friday afternoon. Meredith, the lone employee there was exceedingly helpful in locating a spare gasket not in a kit, and was kind enough to offer it for free! Needless to say, this business puts customer service at the forefront. I imagine they take the same personalized service and careful attention to detail in their rebuilds. I'm trying to rebuild my carburetor myself; but should I fail, this shop will be my first choice in having a unit professionally rebuilt. read more

I can't say enough about the owner, Merrill Bright. I have an 1990 Jeep Wrangler that was not running well. I have taken the Jeep to a few different mechanics. I had the Carburetor changed twice and the Jeep was still not running properly. I spent over $3,000 on trying to get this Jeep to run right. I might as well have put in a new engine. A collegue referred me to The Carburetor Refactory. I explained to Merrill what was happening. He said it sounded like I needed to replace the Stepper Motor. He told me to find a good mechanic and ask them to replace the stepper motor. I couldn't find anywone that even knew what a stepper motor was. Finally, I called him back and asked him how difficult it was and how much it costs. Since the part was not very expensive, and Merrill said replacing this part was like replacing a fuse, I thought I would give it a shot. Needless to say, it took me 30 minutes to replace the part and the Jeep is running great. I can't thank Merrill enough for troubleshooting my issue over the phone. He pretty much fixed my car without seeing or hearing the engine. Because I really don't know much about vehicles, he even understood me when I described the problem I was having. Mariners!, This guy does a great job on marine carbs! I have a very cranky Atomic 4 engine in my 1965 sailboat. The zenneth carb. was a mess and he made it like new. My husband and I installed it and it just purrs. I have a bit of an issue with the initial start up on the engine and Merrill's suggestion to adjust the choke cable was spot on! A wealth of knowledge and excellent service. I will add the signage for this location is alittle faded...look at the picture carefully. It is all worth the effort. read more

I have a 79 GMC truck that was running rich. I rebuilt the carb myself as I have done on other vehicles before. Unfortunately, the home rebuild kit was not enough to fix the problem. I didn't want to switch to an aftermarket carb, as this was the original one to the truck. Through a Yelp search I found the Carburetor Refactory. During the rebuild, they installed new bushings, machined the top plate and adjusted the sticking secondary butterflies. I installed it on my truck and after some minor adjustments, it runs awesome. I had used Merrill's services back in the 80's and possibly up into the 90's which was the end for me of having Volvo's with SU carbs. I was surprised to see a reference to his shop regarding a complete restoration of a vintage MG coupe that is currently at auction. This was of course that the Refactory had rebuilt the carbs. It's been too long for me to remember just what I needed from the shop but was always treated with good service and advice. I rebuilt and tuned my carbs and I am sure Merrill gave me some good pointers as well as any parts I may have needed. Good to see he is still there at the same place even. read more

I just picked up my 83 Toyota Pickup with the carb rebuilt and installed. The carb rebuild was a last ditch effort at fixing a problem with unburnt gas getting into my oil tank. After the carb install, Merrill and Paul spent HOURS tweaking and adjusting the system to make sure they delivered a smooth running fuel system. They went above and beyond, soliciting the help of a colleague, Don, keeping me in the loop of the work/ diagnostics. With the help of these gentlemen, I just drove my pickup home to the sweet sound and smell of NOTHING! A dip into the oil tank shows ZERO FUEL in there. They got to the bottom of the issue (which was multi-faceted) and beyond the carb & involved fuel pressure on the fuel pump. They desire to deliver an adjusted and functioning carb. To make sure this happened for me, they purchased a fuel pump gauge to help diagnosis, bought parts, and cleverly adjusted the fuel pressure to proper psi. How much did this extra work cost me? $50! I am truly grateful. and beyond impressed. I don't do these posts, ever. But DAMN! These fellas deserve it! read more

Merrill saved my classic Mercedes from the crusher. I have a 1970 MB 220 with a Stromberg 175CDT carburetor which was not functioning correctly. I tinkered with it myself, while trying to find a replacement or rebuilder who understood the complexity of this carburetor. The Stromberg 175 CDT was used by several manufacturers, but in the case of Mercedes, there are several proprietary enhancements that were made that has led to a lot of misinformation on the message boards, as well as, general fear of this set up by other carburetor rebuilders. Once I shipped off my carb, I was half expecting someone to call me and explain that they didn't realize that this was the Stromberg/Pierburg carb and that they wouldn't be able to repair it. To my pleasant surprise, Merrill knew exactly what I had been dealing with and he did an excellent job of rebuilding my carb. I spoke with him on the phone and we discussed some of the erroneous information that is floating around the internet and he assured me that this carb was ready to go. I had time to reinstall it yesterday and the car fired right up. I only had to make a small adjustment to the idle screw and it was now driving better then ever. It wasn't a cheap repair, but it was worth every penny knowing that the person who was repairing the carburetor was a true professional.
