Started a trailer brake project and needed to replace 2 drums and 2 hubs. Thought about ordering online but most venders a week out for delivery and shipping was pretty steep due to weight. I stopped by outboard motor shop and they had a set of 10" drums on the shelf as well as a set of hubs. Talked to Matt in parts and he gave me a screaming deal on everything. Nice shop with a selection of most boat and trailer parts. Needed brake line kit as well, but what they had did not fit my need. No biggy, I well ordered that from amazon 1 day delivery. If looking for a tough to find part or have project don't forget about this shop. They got some of everything and may have that hard to find part or piece. read more

They have very long wait times for service and the prices are quite high. The quality of the work is probably OK though. A few years ago they sold us a boat that was not at all appropriate for the SF Bay waters and they overcharged us. (I later found a price sticker on the boat with a lower price). We were neophytes at the time. Live and learn! One reason that I go back is that they are the only Boston Whaler (a great boat) dealer in town. read more

So I , bought a 20 year old Wellcraft last August that had Evinrude problems. These guys brought those motors back to life twice for me. The last time I blew one up so I recently had it re-powered with Hondas. (on the re-power they were the most reasonable )They were the most reasonable in the area and did really great work everybody there is great to work with very knowledgeable. You have to remember it's not Jiffy Lube so it takes a minute to do things right !!you have to be patient with these guys but they do it right and they do what they say they're going to do. Hate to let the secret out, but this shop does quality work. I purchased a Evinrude E-Tec from them back in 2008, and they have servicing my boat ever since. The outdrive shaft broke after the motor was only a few years old, and Sharon called the manufacturer and went to bat for me and they replaced it with a heavier duty outdrive at a very discounted price. I paid $124 for the privilege of writing this review. Really, they should be paying me to do this for them so they don't end up backed up with more disgruntled customers. After two months of waiting (no surprise there- that's boat yards in spring), I have a perfectly tuned-up engine that doesn't run, complete with brand new parts that I'd already replaced with brand new parts, and four carburetors that never got cleaned (which was all I asked them to do). I got two "we'll have it done by" dates that came and went with out a single phone call. I even got to throw away a pair of binoculars and a box of fishing gear that I found submerged in a rain-filled glove box. I want my money back, and then some, but hey, writing this review is worth it if it means no one else has to go through this bs. read more

Don't shop here. The owners are cheap. They intimated they would take care of a BRAND NEW outboard motor, that NEVER, NOT ONE DAY functioned. Didn't/wouldn't take it back. You need to make "Written Arrangements" to expect a return on a defective, non functioning outboard motor. They fixed it........can I trust it? Never. I thought buying a higher priced Mercury outboard was the way to go, turns out its actually made by Tohotsu! Huh? Kinda wished the Owner/Salesman had told me that. Chris Martin was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions when it came time to repower my Parker 2120 and I was fortunate to qualify for all the promotions on top of their discounted price. In spite of the summer rush, Craig followed up with communications and assured me they would get the repower done right. When my boat and new G2 200 Etec was ready for pickup, Javier and Jay did an outstanding job on the install, sea trial and orientation. As a follow up to making sure everything went smooth, Craig ordered a new kicker with a longer shaft at no extra cost. I purchased a Yamaha 25HP about 18 months ago from The Outboard Motor Shop in Oakland. This a well-organized sales and maintenance company for outboard motors. They added a 5" shaft extension to enable the Yamaha to perform really well on my sailboat. They also did the difficult installation on my nacelle, hanging off the boat. I recommend them highly. To drop the lower unit on this motor involves about 6 screws on the lower unit itself, and you have to disconnect the shift lever from the upper unit where the motor is. You also have to remove the diode/rectifier for a minute and when you're disconnecting the shift rod you have to use a U-Joint socket head so you can get the spring off of the shift arm (it's that springy thing with a roller on it that locks the shift rod into the fwd/neutral/reverse positions) After getting the lower unit completely off of there were just glaring things I noticed that told me they didn't even touch this motor. Every screw on the lower unit had oxidation on it from the case. They were not clean, they had no loctite on them. The drive shaft oil seal nearly disintegrated in my hand. And here was the good part, the oil seal was EPOXIED in because there was so much corrosion it wouldn't fit correctly anymore. You would figure a mechanic with all the tools and resources available to him would do a decent job, as in taking the lower unit completely apart, baking it, weld some aluminum to it, and mill out the excess. Unfortunately Jackie Gleason is a lazy ass, and didn't feel like putting in that much effort. It took me 2 weeks of digging and grinding with my Dremel tool to get out all that old epoxy. I also replaced the drive shaft bearing because it had become rusted out. I also replaced the prop shaft oil seal, the prop shaft cover seal, the impeller, the impeller gaskets. All in all, I spent about $130 rebuilding it. I ended up epoxying the shaft seal back in, but I used really good quality West Systems epoxy and micro-balloons. I don't have access to a arc welder. The thing that really ticks me off about all this is, Large Marge, Erik the Viking, and Jackie Gleason all knew the history of this motor (which I still don't really know) They all knew that this lower unit had these problems, but instead of giving me a decent deal on a screwed up motor, Jackie charged me market price for this year of motor in mint condition. He even spray painted it to look like it was in good condition (even over the zinc, GOOD JOB GENIUS!) Him and his cohorts took advantage of my naiveness. Luckily I only had one major failure with this motor. Luckily it was in some protected waters and not on the bay. I was alone, and my kids weren't with me. Thing is, these guys just don't care about your safety. If you have loved ones you take on the water, do not take your motor here. There are other good shops I've found. They may not be as conveniently located, but they won't lie to you and swindle your cash. I'm about done rebuilding this motor. I'm going to replace the rocker cover gasket because it leaks oil when the motor is set on its side, and I'm going to give it a decent paint job using REAL anti-corrosion primer and REAL Honda paint. I may lose a few hundred $$'s when I sell it but at least I won't be scamming anyone. After I sell it I'm going to buy a brand new motor. Just not from these clowns. I'll take my business where I don't have to worry about being scammed. read more

I walked to the parts counter and stated that I needed help finding a propeller for my Honda outboard. Employee just points down at the isle and tells me that is what they have. I am not too educated on this boat stuff so I had no idea what I was looking at. I ended up going down the street to West Marine where an employee made sure I got the right propeller. read more

This place is a joke. Customer service is why these guys and so many others are failing in the business. You can't approach this place or anyone in it without feeling like your being treated like an idiot. Even the woman who answers the phone is rude and she sounds like she has a 3rd grade education. I can (and will) give my money to someone else who has the common decency to treat me with respect. Boaters, prepare to make all your purchases online in the future, because places like this can't and wont even try to compete with pricing or relationship building. I had a great experience at Outboard Motor Shop. My Sales person what Chris Martin. I ordered an incredible Striper 200cc. Chris and I went back and forth for a few weeks to get my build correct. He was constantly responsive via email and on the phone, and went back and forth with the manufacturer to get my build just right. Craig the owner was always there during the process and was a pleasure to deal with. Javier took us out when we went to pick up our boat after it was built and did an incredible job of showing us the entire boat, all the features, and when we came back, he washed the entire boat down for us, hooked it back up to our truck and at no time was anyone there in a hurry to get us out the door. Every question, every concern, every thing we needed, they were very attentive and polite in meeting our requests. In the end, we got exactly what we wanted, and Ill say, even more. I've bought many boats but this was my first custom build. It was smooth as can be and they even arranged financing, recommended insurance, and their shop has a full service store in a store that is going to be handling all of our electronics package build out. I would not hesitate in any way to recommend Chris, Craig, and Javier to anyone, and I will continue to give them my business. Thank you Gentlemen. The old Sea Power Marine shop is now the Outboard Motor Shop. I recently went there, looking for info on a small outboard. The new indoor boat and motor display area is much bigger and better organized than the old shop. Over 20 new outboards on display, and a helpful, low-key salesman (Bill, who also worked at Sea Power) patiently answer my questions. 3 days later, I called Bill, and we dickered on the phone a bit, and made a fair deal. When I showed up for the motor, all was ready and waiting, and Bill spent 1/2 hour going over the controls, test run, etc......A great place to do business, with excellent customer care. The team here produces good work on the specific problem but the last two visits I have had at the shop have taken 12 weeks and 8 weeks for very basic repairs. Additionally, they did not call to confirm if we wanted work done that was not covered by warranty even though it was brought in for a warranty repair. We ended up having to pay way too much for something that was supposed to be repaired under warranty without asking if we approved the job. Lesson, ask that they call you to approve work being done and don't expect to get your motor back in under 2-3 months. read more

I took my 20 year old Honda 4 stroke to get a service after 7 years of use on my sailboat. It started leaking gas and would not run up. These guys are busy, but will get to it. Picking up my engine I hadn't had a good chance to test until I went to HMB and Drakes Bay. It was not running right at over half speed. Craig and I emailed and he happily said bring it over when you can, I did and they looked into it immediately while I waited. It took about an hour in the tank to find a bad ground from the coil screw which was arcing against the chassis causing spark loss. Brilliant troubleshooting instantly confirmed fixed by me. Where to begin, where to begin. After a year of research, I decided to take the plunge and buy a high quality (and priced), well built boat for ocean and freshwater fishing - a Boston Whaler. I work up in the Bay Area and the only "Master Dealer" in the area is the Outboard Motor Shop. I sent them an email asking if they had what I was looking for in stock - a 19 foot Montauk. I recieved a prompt response that, yes, one was coming in, but I'd better act fast since "4 other people were looking at it." Either bluntly honest or a bad sign of cheesy sales hooks to come - I brushed it off and decided to head on in. I was greeted by a friendly guy who located Craig, the president of the outfit. I introduced myself and asked him how he was (standard). The reply given was a gruff "busy, busy, sellin' boats". Ok, great. Congratulations. You're doing better than 99% of your competition. He proceeded to take me to the boat. A beautiful machine. His persona changed from Captain Sales Ahab to a nice guy; answering my questions, one after another. Suddenly however, we were interrupted by a stout panicked woman who seemed to work there. "Craig!" she exclaimed. "We've got a guy on line one that wants to buy a Montauk!" I almost wet myself laughing. Either this was a truthful yet tragically timed phone call, or the worst sales tactic I've ever run into. It wasn't like I was desperate or in a hurry to buy that boat that instant. I didnt have a suitcase full of coke and had to go hide out in the farralones for a week and needed a boat. I just smiled and said to him, "you'd better go sell that boat then!" She scampered off, he acted unphased, and we proceeded into his office to talk price. When we entered the building, she looked at me, looked at him, and said, "Uh the guy hung up!" Those montauk buyers are a fickle bunch. I had a few more questions answered by Craig, who was a nice guy but, after this sort of cheese, you just cant trust to throw 40 grand at him and expect good things. I've been very impressed with the Outboard Motor Shop. Four years back they did some work on my motor. It's been working great since then. Recently though I had an OEM fuel line connector break. Matt in the parts department was able to look up the motor's serial number. Thankfully it was still in their system. He then determined the model of the motor, and was able to identify the correct part for me. They had it in stock, and I was able to walk out a happy sailor. read more

Took a late model Honda outboard in for a tune-up. Was told that they were two weeks out for service. After three weeks I called. "Next week," I was told. After six weeks, I retrieved the motor. I took it to another shop and got the full tune-up for $300.00 less than their estimate, and it was done the next day. read more

This place has AWFUL AWFUL service. Called ahead to see if they had the part. They said yes they have lots. So I drive there (30min) and can barely get the guy behind the counter who is lazily thumbing through a catalog to pay attention to me. Then after twenty minutes of casually looking around the shop, he tells me....Guess what?....They don't have the part. Then I ask about some other parts that I need for an outboard....and the guy is completely clueless....about some basic stuff. Definitely going to go elsewhere to get my engine serviced. Looking to by a small outboard was told a Honda credit app would take 1 day at least. Acted like I was bothering them for a small engine that was only around $1000. Called Eagle Marine in Martinez for the same credit app/engine & that shop treated me like a king. They had a credit app approved in an hour & did it all over the phone & email. Came in, signed the papers etc... walked out with my engine. I assume if you drop some bigger $$ at Outboard Motor Shop you will get better service which is true at most places. read more

Okay, call, need a VST filter change on my perfect, 2002 Yamaha HPDI 150. "No, we don't work on those. "They never run right, and we end up spending hours on them. I won't service them under any circumstance." Okay, a Yamaha service company who does not service Yamaha. So for anyone with a HPDI, which is one of their best engines ever made, Yamaha, or the dealer, thinks they are junk. Somehow, I don't think Yamaha USA is gonna be too happy to find out their service center is telling someone to effectively, move to another brand. Stay tuned, as we take this to Yamaha. For now, guess I have to go down to southern cal for routine service. read more

I have purchased two boats from Outboard Motor Shop, a 2016 Boston Whaler and 2011 Triumph, and their customer service focus and attention is above and beyond what I ever expected, and why I tell anyone looking for a new boat or for work on their boat that these are the guys you call! On a recent Saturday outing on the bay for fleet week, one of the busiest days of the year for anyone in the boating business, my timing belt snapped on my Whaler's engine-total fluke. I had my family and friends on board and we were headed out for a great day on the Bay, and I was now looking at being stranded with the day a total bust! I called Craig Jacobsen who first helped me try and trouble shoot the problem over the phone and then told me to just come by and he would have his guys take a look at it. When I arrived at their dock, his mechanic Barney dropped what he was doing to come take a look, and in less than 2 minutes he diagnosed the problem. In order to solve this, and to get us back out on the water without waiting to order parts, he went and took parts of another new boat in the showroom, and with the help of another mechanic Jay who came down to help, they had us fixed and good as new in under 30 minutes. The whole time they were friendly and happy to help, never once lamenting that we just interrupted their scheduled work they had on their plate to complete that day. I can't get this level of service on my brand new BMW, nor would I have expected that. The fact that these guys view their customers as their top priority speaks volumes to their integrity and they treat you like extended family (the ones you like). I highly recommend anyone in or out of the area to come by and see for yourself, don't buy a boat anywhere else! read more

Wow, I will not ever trust them again or recommend them. Took my boat in on a scheduled appointment thinking I would get my boat back quickly. 1 week, 1day later I had to call to find out if they had even touched it. They did not but might get to it that afternoon. They called back and told me my Carbs needed to be rebuilt for a tune of $900. Bad news &, bad sign. My carbs were rebuilt for $700 a year and a half ago by others. They needed to order the rebuild kit. Two weeks later still no call. I called to find out where they are with my boat because I was going on vacation at the end of the week. They told me It would be ready in three more days. The day it is ready they called me and told me my engine has a knock and just take it to a junk yard. Not worth working on it. It ran great when I brought it in to them except it would not idle properly. Definetely no knock but he told me it would throw a rod if I used it. He gave me a break and charged me $568. Took it home and it sounded like crap, coughing during idleing but I did not feel it was a knock. Have to tell you that this really ruined my vacation for two weeks as all I could think about is buying a new engine. My Yamaha Tech mechanic emailed me and asked me if I wanted him to take a look at it. Told him to meet me at the ramp and he could adjust the idle and then we could go fishing. If it blows up, Oh well. He had it running pretty good in ten minutes but it kept sneezing because it was to lean. He said who ever rebuilt it did a poor job. The carbs were not boiled & cleaned properly. Settings were all wrong and it is leaking on 2 carbs causing the sneeze. As it works out we went fishing and it ran great top end. Idle is another story. It will die intermittently approaching the dock etc. but at least I can use my boat again. I have driven it 3 times now 30 miles and I still need my carbs rebuilt. However, I feel that I cannot trust taking it back and complain to them as they might make sure it blows up. What to do? Update: Have driven the boat over 250 miles and it runs good top end other than dieing when idleing or approaching the dock. I have come to the conclussion that they rebuilt carbs poorly and could not get it to run properly then gave up on it rather than having to rebuild them again. read more
