Six years is too long for an update. Caputo's Fine Foods is an institution and should be on anyone's radar if you can get here. I dropped by today to get some Easter goodies, the savory kind. As always, excellent. It's an annual tradition for me to visit around Easter specifically for their Basket Cheese among other incredibly delicious items. This cheese is only out around Easter and sold in a basket. A must try. Here's my list from today (to name a few): Arancini with cheese only? Check. Arancini means riceballs. Roasted Red Peppers? Check. Charred and to die for. Homemade Turkey? Check. I got a divorce from Boar's Head a long time ago. Breadcrumb stuffed peppers? Check Focaccia? Deliciously Checked from my list. Fluffy and light as air with a light tomato sauce coating. Yummy. And so on. I love everything about Caputo's. From their fresh pastas and ravioli to the variety of cheese to their holiday specials. It truly is amazing. If in the area this week, grab the Basket Cheese. You will leave with a full bag and undoubtedly drop more than a few bucks here. Quality over quantity, and they have it all. . read more

A small, but mighty grocery store. The prices scream Carroll Gardens, but the quality of the items there are just as top notch as the neighborhood. They offer sandwiches for takeout as well, which knowing me, I had to buy one. The Italian sandwich I ordered is small but mighty, much like the store. I got it with hot peppers which provide an extra layer of heat, but do not detract from anything that makes it less of a sandwich. The only problem I had was, where was I going to eat it? That problem was quickly solved when I went down to Carroll Street and ate this in a local park, all the while looking like a Saturday slob. There are other stores similar to this one that are closer to me that are just as good, but I am happy I came here and gave this one a fair shake. read more

My daughter Arianna lives in the neighborhood- - just moved here in April. My husband and I had our first apt ( 2 bedroom fireplace 4th floor walk up brownstone 2 blocks from promenade) in 1976 @ $450 a month. Our heart is still in Brooklyn..... WHAT a rare jewel the Caputo family is, and has so magnificently deliciously created for the neighborhood! We had a perfect smorgasbord feast Christmas Day of their smoked mozzarella, rainbow cookies ( VERY best I ever had), fresh baked prosciutto bread, tiramisu - - yum! For my flight home to Florida I ordered a mortadella with sorpresatta sandwich on a very fresh light Seminole hero with tomato lettuce Italian dressing ( took two days to eat!) . Would have bought 2 pounds of rainbow cookies but their delivery did not arrive. Flew home with a huge very broken heart. Everything is exquisite, perfectly made, better than anything on Arthur Ave, Little Italy etc etc They offer a very wide selection of delicious soups, sauces, fresh pasta, entrees, ALL delicious!I also love to cook and my childhood friend's mother taught me how to make Italian spaghetti sauce from scratch. And the family welcomes one and all with heart laughter and genuine friendship. My daughter is SO lucky to have them! read more

Small Italian Delicatessen in Carrol Gardens with a lot of heart and so much to find if you're craving something delicious, authentic and Italian to take home. Chock full of imports and home made specialties. Their ricotta is the best I've had in the City with a tiny hint of sweetness. The charred red peppers and milanese cutlets have also won me over. read more

If you like eating, cooking, or generally being in the vicinity of Italian food, you should already have Caputo's in your rotation. Because if you're not stopping in to Caputo's at least once a week, you're not taking advantage of living in this neighborhood (or in Brooklyn) properly. This is a gem. At a minimum, you should be getting your fresh mozzarella here. And your pasta (they've got fresh, dried, and all sorts of stuffed frozen options (ravioli, manicotti, tortellini, etc.), along with excellent sauce (everything from basic marinara to interesting pestos). Do you make pizza at home? You should. Caputo's makes it easy, because they've got great dough, great sauce (as I mentioned), and the good pressed, low moisture mozzarella if your thin crust can't hold up under the fresh. Speaking of cheese, they've got the best ricotta you can buy. Excellent scamorza, burrata, parmesan, grana padano, etc. What else can you get here? Everything you've ever wanted to assemble on an antipasto plate for a party, top a pizza or pasta with, or just eat out of the container standing in front of your fridge every time you walk by. I highly recommend the grilled artichokes and the grilled red peppers (they have this wonderful smoky char), the hot soppressata, the sun dried tomatoes, the salami, the olives, and the stuffed peppers (although the spicy breadcrumbs can be too much for me sometimes). And if that wasn't enough, they'll make you the best sandwich you've ever had...chicken cutlets, Italian combos...you can't go wrong at Caputo's. read more

Grind now. Shine later. Not only my personal mantra, but obviously something the fine individuals at Caputo's also embody. When you google Italian Deli, this should be the first image that pops up. Fresh meat, cheeses, pasta, side-dishes, and groceries -- sup. I got the Italian sub w/ hot peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. Everything down to the bread was fresh. The prosciutto stuffed peppers were also a crowd pleaser. Whether it is your first time stopping in, or you're a neighborhood regular, the treatment is the same. I think most reviews are overly positive. In my opinion, this is a typical Brooklyn neighborhood Italian sandwich shop. As far as the products they carry, I found them very limited. Wanted to get some rice for risotto but they had one option. Seems like cheese is the focus here. The sandwich was a bit dry and underwhelming. Also they didn't put the proper cheese on it. They said they were out and put on a Parmesan on instead, meanwhile they had the cheese sitting right next to it but didnt open a new one. Still was charged the same. Love this place! The mozzarella is so tasty, I love that they give you the option of salted or unsalted. A lot of Italian goods in the store (why go to Eataly in the city?). The breadcrumb stuffed peppers and grilled peppers are also very good. The staff are very friendly and patient. Incredibly professional and courteous place that's been there for 50 years. It's a small store but rivals Eataly in quality and selection.

Being able to regularly shop at Caputo's is one of the top ten reasons to live in Brooklyn. Their fresh mozzarella is FRESH; they've occasionally asked me to "wait a few minutes, a new batch is being made right now". The quality of all their products is outstanding, and their knowledge is solid. For instance, their prosciutto de Parma is outstanding and they're one of the few vendors left in the area who actually know how to trim and cut it. They're lovely folks who take well-earned pride in their shop. read more

This place is everything its hyped up to be and more. One of the most magical and perfect representations of Old Brooklyn left today, specifically the rapidly fading Old Italian Neighborhood that once enveloped all of Carroll Gardens and much of the surrounding area that was simply known as "South Brooklyn". I come for the first and foremost for the house-made pasta, when you get the Fresh stuff here, in the refrigerator case behind the counter, it is soul shattering and life affirming. It cooks to perfect al dente very quickly, so quick in fact you barely need to cook it, and must be careful not to overcook it and squander its greatness. The dried stuff is quite good too and if you have the chance you must get the squid ink pasta, but it is not always available. Yes as many others have noted, the cheeses are also incredible, be it the house made wet fresh mozzarella, salted or not, or the big wheel of real deal imported Parmesan reggiano. The prices aren't cheap but well worth it. The servers have old school class and are on top of their game, even the young kids, they were obviously just brought up that way. If you don't love this place and everything it represents get the hell outta Brooklyn immediately! read more

Best mozzarella ever -- you'll want to run home to eat it. Get it salted. Pumpkin ravioli is also damn good, although too sweet to make a whole meal around -- more of an appetizer. The other raviolis i've tried (the mushroom gnocci and walnut gorgonzola) were a little bland and disappointing. The place has really good meats and cheese too. But the mozzarella is seriously a must try if you're in the neighborhood. read more

A cute little Italian store that seems to have a nice selection of cheeses, but obviously I was there to try the mozzarella. It was delicious, the texture is not as soft as other fresh versions and its consistency more like a mass produced version, but it is quite yummy. The ricotta borders on amazing, it is so creamy and smooth and flavorful. Since we were there we thought let's get dinner, so we bought some of their home made dry pasta and a container of the marinara sauce. The pasta was well made, but while the package said to cook the pasta 4-6 minutes, it needed about 14, so don't just listen to the directions, taste your pasta! The sauce had a hint of spice but it was tasty and fresh. While I'm not sure it is worth the trek from Queens to Brooklyn, I can see why it is a neighborhood favorite. read more

I went to Caputo's for the first time yesterday because I was making lasagna. I got their homemade bolognese, fresh lasagna noodles, and mozzarella and OMG everything was so fresh and delicious! Once upon a time some of my friends fell in love and got married. They then got pregnant and moved to Brooklyn. The story of life. A couple times a month aunt Lisa would come over bringing goodies from Caputo's in order to subject the cute little spawn into food comas so that the mamas and papas could get their drink on with her. Caputo's quality more than justifies its Brooklyn Heights price--- you couldn't find better mozzarella in Italia. The skin is so sweet and each milky bite melts those "how did I end up spending 43 dollars on 4 pounds of groceries?" thoughts away. A very distinctive and fun collection of foodstuffs that will probably make you ooooh and ahhhh. ...Unfortunately, it turns out that parents are usually more prone to food comas than children. I love this neighborhood staple. The locals refer to Caputos as "the mozzarella guy". Which is where we get all of our mozzarella (always fresh, always creamy and salted if you want it to be), all of our pizza dough and all of our sauces and soups ALL. WINTER. LONG. Their fresh pasta is great too - we have given it for gifts - a little bit of local Brooklyn to go with your food gift basket. We have also picked up their locally made pies - Grain Pie for Easter, Lemoncello Cake just because I am obsessed with anything lemon flavored and all of it reminds me of my youth of eating with family - my Great Grandparents and Grandparents and their amazing cooking and baking. Going into Caputos means you are supporting a fantastic neighborhood shop that has excellent prepared foods and you are making yourself very satisfied with all the Italian comfort foods that are available to you. You can also pick up freshly made sandwiches here, along with chicken cutlets, eggplant cutlets, parms, roasted veggies and assorted cured meats and Italian cheeses. In the back of the shop you have freezers filled with all the different kinds of pasta you can only dream of: squash gnocchi, spinach fettucine, lobster ravioli... In the deli by the checkout they have different types of meats, homemade mozzarella, fresh pasta sauces, antipasto, and more. While it can get pricey, you can stop in here and get everything you need to make a homemade meal at home: pasta, sauce, meatballs, mozzarella, and juice. My co-worker has been ravving about Caputo's for as long as I can remember and I've never made it there before they closed. But while planning to make my very first tiramisu this weekend, I knew I had to go to Caputo's to get the best lady finger cookies and mascarpone cheese (and I was right). I managed to get there 10 mins before they closed on Sunday and as soon as I grabbed the cookies, the owner said, "Making tiramisu?" He was incredibly helpful and apparently the trick to a good tiramisu is super strong espresso. ;) And thanks to the advice given by fellow yelpers, I purchased salted mozzarella. OMG. I think I died and went to cheese heaven. My only regret is not buying more. It's probably a good thing that I don't live down the street because I'd visit them daily and happily empty my bank account at their store. read more

During the week I discovered this place, I went back 3 times! It is AMAZING. Mozzarella is amazing. Ricotta is amazing. Prosciutto is amazing. Soppresatta is amazing. Manchego is amazing. Parm Regg is amazing. Baguette and ciabatta are amazing! Pickled peppers are amazing! Olives are amazing! I love everything here!!! Service is great. Everyone is super helpful and knowledgeable about all of their products. Last time I went in and ordered a million different items and the guy was really patient. He also let me try samples of the cheeses before I decided on anything (Everything I tried, I bought! Ha!). Expect a line on weekends. Weekdays are great and line-free! Now that I am no longer lucky enough to live around the corner from Caputo's, I have to make pilgrimages to Carroll Gardens periodically to get my fresh mozzarella fix. My mom, for her part, comes down from Westchester for the homemade raviolis, sauces and meatballs. Everything house-made is worth trying at this venerable family-run shop. Others have commented on the exemplary fresh mozz (which they'll dip in salt water for you if you want it seasoned) but equally wonderful is the selection of soups (I like lentil) and the take-out sandwiches. Today I had my regular: Genoa salami, fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar on ciabatta. In addition to the store's fresh pastas, sauces, antipasti and tiramisu (good!), there's a selection of specialty items like cheeses, oils, vinegars, olives and jams. It's a real family operation. When the Caputo matriarch, Flora (who could often be seen in the kitchen in a large cardigan) died two years ago, the family's sons and daughters-in-law became more present and keep an eye on their grieving dad, with whom they speak in Italian. The two young men who work the counter are great also, super-friendly and helpful. Everyone is ready to talk - about the store, the food or the neighborhood. Part of my Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill foodie trifecta. I always try to hit up Caputo's on my pilgrimages to Los Paisanos and Shelsky's. Caputo's is an old time store with a bit of the look and feel of the lost and lamented Sixth Avenue Balducci's. Most sing the praises of the mozzarella, which is fine, but I plump for the grilled artichokes and prosciutto. Pesto sauce in the refrigerated case is killer. As good as their mozz is, I'd rather have the mozarella di bufala. The plump semi-dried figs are well worth a try. The freezer case holds ravioli, tortellini and four varieties of my favorite, tortelloni. On a recent visit the olive display could have used an upgrade, but I won't deduct a star. New York needs to hang on to stores like this one. Please support it. read more

This mozzarella is one of the best things I have ever eaten. I have lived around the corner from Caputo's for twelve years, and it never ceases to amaze me. Excellent olives, cheese, sliced meats, grilled artichoke hearts, pastas,salumi. Run with love by Frank Caputo, his family and his crew. He owns the building and swears he will be here forever, like his dad, and hopefully one of his sons will carry on after that. I cannot imagine the neighborhood without them. Yum-Diddly-Umptious. Mozzarella like I've never had, better than Italy. They ask you if you want it salted. YOU DO, trust me here. I won't lead you astray. I've had a mozzarella and tomato sando there with olive oil and balsamic. Possibly best thing I've eaten in all of Brooklyn. The important thing to know here is that they work in the old butcher method of "pulling the # out of the red pig mouth, and place your order when called." so don't get caught looking like a fool with no #! read more

One of the gems of Carroll Gardens. I usually get unsalted mozzarella but change when I go to Caputos. My advice, get the salted one. They will dip it in a bath of salt water and you will understand what GREAT cheese is when you eat it. If I lived here, I'd eat the cheese every day.Seriously. The foundation of my purchases: mozzarella, salted please (never refrigerate it so buy accordingly! refrigeration kills the taste) and the sweet soppressata. Maybe I'll get some olives; pappardelle; the homemade pesto sauce; prosciutto (ask about their sourcing, makes you appreciate the meats); a wedge of that Spanish fig and almond cake. Nothing has disappointed me. Ok, once I bought a box of the pumpkin raviolis, and I decided that I preferred my pasta savory. But how else would I have known? I love Caputo's unreservedly. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable and friendly. I try to avoid weekends, between 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; these are the "pull that number" hours-- it goes quick, though. read more

Best. Mozzarella. Ever. The last time I was there, I requested mozzarella and the elderly owner held up a finger and walked to the back. He returned a few moments later with brand-spanking-new, freshly made mozzarella. As in, still a bit warm and gooey. By the time I got it home it had taken on the shape of the container.
