Ordered takeout after not eating here in around 5 years. The place looks great. People were super friendly and I was really excited for my order. It was ready to go when I got there, paid, left and drove home. We ordered the alligator which I have always loved in the past, smoked salmon, jambalaya, greens, and garlic potatoes. When we got home we bagged our food and the look of the food was mediocre at best. Made our plates and was very disappointed in the taste and flavor or lack there of the food. The alligator was nothing more then Big chunks of breading with very minimal meat and what meat there was very chewy and over cooked. The jambalaya was ok but not very flavorful. The smoked salmon had a very distinctive smell that was not very enticing and I've had plenty of smoked salmon before. The garlic potatoes had no garlic flavor at all, it was just roasted potatoes. The greens were definitely better than i remember and one of the better dishes out of everything. I hope it was just an off night for them but I don't know if I'll return. Let's get started with the chicken, it was soooooo dry that it hurt to even try to chew it,.let alone swallow it. The pulled pork was dry and not seasoned, the GARLIC potatoes didnt have a grain of.garlic to them(had to add my own seasonings just for them to be edible, the cornbread was dry to the point it crumbled all apart and fries were cold and mushy and the slaw was tangy, tasted of vinegar. We came here for lunch after my sailors graduation. Everything looked beautiful. The display case of seafood and desserts we ordered fried clams, shrimp and scallops with sauteed veggies, shrimp etouffe plate with roasted potatoes and greens, pulled pork, lobster roll, clam chowder and a pb cup. The portions were large and filling. My son said the shrimp was a bit salty for him. The rest of us enjoyed our food. The scallops were cooked beautifully and my sauteed veggies were also tasty. Food may have looked a bit better than it tasted for some. Pulled pork was "super good. Moist. Not too salty. It was really good." Pb cup was "good to fair." The food is great! The Cajun Chicken Strips are AMAZING so much better than Canes. The Clam Strips were delicious!! Corn bread on point! Not a huge fan of their BBQ sauce but it was good and we ate the pulled pork and brisket we got! The service was great! We're group of 7, We didnt know that It is like a "take out"place. Shanty's located at the back which made the store looked larger. It is a 1-4 person table only. We have to wait to be seated as we're group. I recommend their beef brisket and fried mushroom. Also their turtle cheesecake even the chocolate cake. It tastes good. Stopped in for some seafood and dinner for the rest of the family. Called ahead of time and placed the order so we would be in and out. We ordered the 1/2 lb clam strips with garlic potatoes, greens and cornbread, 1/2 slab BBQ ribs with garlic potatoes, greens and cornbread and 1/2 lb beef brisket with cole slaw, garlic potatoes and cornbread with the sauce on the side. The food was ready for pick up when we got there. The food was good, and the portion sizes were good as well. Could have used more potatoes. We all enjoyed our meals. They change their fryer oil often enough so the flavor of the food is always clean and fresh. OMG, the sides- where to begin! Captain Porky's does not disappoint! It has become a "go to" spot when we are going to/from Chicago. My most recent visit was on a Sunday afternoon. Service was fast and friendly. There were a few other occupied tables, but it was relatively quite. The brisket sandwich was so, so good and I highly recommend! Portion sizes are perfect and as I previously stated, I feel it is reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food received. I like that you can just stop by during a road trip and it is a consistently great experience. It's so easy to order from the counter, sometimes they call your number and you have to pick up from the counter and sometimes they bring it out to you. It is informal (that's worth a star in my book!), so do not expect to be waited on. The entire space has always been clean during my visits. Bathrooms are also well maintained! They now have more seating which is great. Not once have I had to wait for a place to sit. Since my last review I have learned I have some food sensitivities. It is great that they use olive oil for sautéing instead of butter. Always ask to double check if you have serious food allergies or sensitivities! Just today I was able to choose between sautéed vegetables and sautéed asparagus as my side. Might not sound like much, but so many places use butter or soy oil which I can't have anymore. I also can't have wheat or gluten so I'm getting used to my options being limited. If you can have dairy, I'd highly recommend asking for the fried cheese. The prices are all reasonable, the food is all made fresh and there is a huge variety of entrees and sides and deserts. I had mistakenly thought this was a sit down service. We arrived near close and the staff was very attentive and friendly. I ordered the two meat combo with chicken and beef brisket and a side of potatoes. The meats were tender and cooked well. Nice flavor. The garlic potatoes were good but missing something. For reference, eating in the restaurant. 1. Sat down in front area, flys are everywhere, tables are sticky. 2. Food: chicken wings served to me were raw, despite being so hot they melted through the styrofoam box it came in. The chicken pot pie was cold to the touch. Fries were very good! I'll give credit where it's due! 3. One of the chefs came to my table, after I had returned the raw chicken, exclaiming "who had the problem?!" I told him it was me, he told me there was nothing wrong with melting styrofoam in the food. 1/10 literally made a yelp account to write this review. My most recent visit here was again of the hit or miss variety. What they do well on is the Colossal Jumbo Fried Shrimp $28 per pound, the Fried Scallops at $34 per pound and the Fried Walleye at $22 per pound. All the above are excellent and very pricy especially for a mostly take-out joint. They do have indoor dining but you still have to order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. Very friendly order takers What they don't do so well on is the Fried Perch at $22 per pound. It was zero stars and I ended up throwing them down the disposal. They were super small and super dry. Completely lacking any flavor. The rib tips on this visit were burned and dry. The BBQ sauce was very good. The Jambalaya was so so as well as the Étouffée.
