I took my grandson to get fish and chips at Captain George's. I ordered takeout and we took it for our date night. The fish was absolutely perfect.Nice big thick were homemade to perfection. We could've not asked for a more delicious meal. The entire staff was very accommodating and friendly.. I'd ask for a special request to which was met with very positive and special. We thank you so very much for everything. We will definitely be back. read more

Let me save you $30 which is what it cost to barely feed one person. The fish and chips was the biggest let down. Fries tasted Iike they were made a week ago and just reheated for my order. The "fish" was 70% oily breading and 30% fish. Had little to no flavour and wasn't even bigger than a filet o fish patty. The shrimps were okay, again no seasoning or flavour just oily batter. Burger was the best part of the meal and that's not saying much. Bun, lettuce and tomato tasted crisp and fresh the burger patty was no better than a Harvey's burger. Definitely not home made. Wouldn't be so harsh if it didn't cost me $30, this was just sad. read more

Excellent family run restaurant! We loved everything about this place. The fish was such a high portion! Tasted fresh. We got haddock and the family meal for three. It was $30 after tax. The meal came with coleslaw, and three pieces of fish and fries. We can't wait to come back!! read more

Captain George's Fish & Chips - Menu - Fish & Chips Near Me - Cobourg, Ontario

I tagged along with a friend to do some maintenance on his cottage and, on our way back home, we stopped for a late lunch at a place that he recommended, Captain George's Fish & Chips. He ordered the fish & chips but I forgot what type of fish (haddock, cod, or other). It looked really good, with a decent size piece of fish, chunky fries, and coleslaw. Wanting something different, I ordered the gyros dinner, served with fries, Greek salad, and tzatziki. The salad was good and the fries were nice and crispy but I was a little disappointed with the gyros. Instead of the freshly carved cones of meat off a rotisserie, it was pre sliced pieces of meat, kinda like what you might buy in a supermarket. It wasn't bad but not what I expected from a restaurant. Lesson learned. When at a fish & chips restaurant in cottage country, order the fish & chips! read more

Where can you get a two piece halibut fish and chips with a lovey salad for under $15 Canadian? Try Capt George's! Not much in the way of scenery.. old pictures of tropical fish and a wooden ship model (actually nice) small tables and a to go counter but my halibut was fresh and fried perfectly- the salad was fresh and very tasty. I passed on the chips cause of the carbs ya know.. but excellent service and great price! Oh magic halibut, how tasty God has made you! read more

Came here on the way back from the sandcastle festival nearby. After beaching all day, was in the mood for some seafood. Not really sure why the rating is so high at this place. The servers did their best to be friendly, though did have to be asked multiple times for certain things - they were busy this day however, so I will give them a pass on that. The food though was mediocre at best. The combos were much pricier than expected given the little amount of food you actually get. Worse yet, underneath all of the fried batter (that fell off almost instantly after putting a fork into it), was very little fish, shrimp, and scallop. The dish we ordered came with the tiniest of cups of tarter sauce, that honestly was already gone after a few dips - not really sure why they were being so stingy with sauce. I saw other tables similarly ask for more sauce, which arrived in more tiny little cups. Given the high rating, the food was quite underwhelming. read more

If you're ever in the mood for fish I highly recommend this location. I walked in the door and I was greeted by a host, to whom was smiling and friendly. Qualities is very rarely seen in a host( I'm from Toronto). It was set yourself, I did and he walked over with a very big smile and I felt welcome like I was at his home. I order my drink then after he brought it and I asked some question about the menu I order the 2 pics fish. Food: served hot and nice. Average size for fish. Price not that bad. With my meal I obtained 2 fish, fries, and Cold slaw. They don't have tape soft drinks you get a can. (I would suggest they get one but I like more the a can to drink). I could not find anything wrong with my serves. If you have to find something the host/server never told me his name I had to ask for it. But really I did not mind. ( his name was Sheldon-like from Big Bang) Over all I would go back if I'm in town again.. They have a parking lot and it's free. read more

Captain George's Fish & Chips - One of the ships - Fish & Chips Near Me - Cobourg, Ontario

What a great gem! A few friends and I popped in for a quick lunch on the way to Prince Edward County. We ordered everything family style, since we all wanted a bit of everything. We had the family cod dinner and the shrimp meal between three of us. We had a really hard time finishing it, because it was so much food. The shrimp, in particular, was very good. They were also very generous with the sauces and happy to give us extra tartar sauce and seafood sauce. As with the other reviews, the service is really what made this place shine. Our server was helpful and incredibly enthusiastic about making sure we had a great meal. I'll definitely stop in again when I'm in town or passing through on the 401! read more

Ok. My son tells me to go this place. Drive from Montreal and it's slow. Takes 6 hours. Pull up at restaurant at 6:30. Google maps, close at 8 on Monday (but aware that it's a holiday). Get in there "we close at 7. So you can't get table service only takeout." I'm sorry, but that's lazy bullshit. The fact that your cutoff is that early is crazy. Your in the customer service business. Don't ever complain about poor sales. Ever. I have worked 13 years of retail. Had lots pull on door right at closing. I let everyone in. Every single one. To not be decent enough to let people eat takeout at a table is pretty lazy, sorry. Good luck. read more

Halibut was overcooked and dry. Burger way ok. Fried clams were small and the portion was tiny. Fries were soggy. Picked up because of covid, but was not provided with any tartar sauce, ketchup, vinegar or any kind of condiments or cutlery. A little cheaper then other fish and chips places but the food was just terrible. Unsatisfied and disappointed. read more

Comprehensive menu very very good service. Ask for Sheldon the most energetic helpful waiter you will ever meet. Also very bilingual. Par excellence. Be careful he.might get fresh with your wife. read more

Captain George's Fish & Chips - Some nice cod and great service by Sheldon. - Fish & Chips Near Me - Cobourg, Ontario

My mom and I decided to treat ourselves and heard this place was the best fish n chips in town. Their special was one piece of fish and fries for only $8.99. What? That's crazy cheap! We called in our order and popped in shortly thereafter to pick up our grub. I must say, the haddock was delish! The batter was crisp and not oily and there was a good crust to fish ratio. And the portion size was very generous. The fries seemed hand-cut and the flavour was there, but I found them a bit undercooked for my liking. I will totally return when in Cobourg again. I wonder if I can ask for extra crispy fries. Hmmmm...worth a shot! : ) read more

The food tasted good but the portion size was terrible. It looked like a kids meal. Definitely not worth the money for the tiny piece of fish you receive. I've been to much better Captain George's than this one. read more

Great food, great service. Couldn't recommend enough. Both the haddock and the halibut are excellent, the chips are equally excellent. Classic fish and chips at good prices. read more

Unfortunately seems to have gone downhill. The fries are under cooked and cold. The fish was just okay and the fried pickles a hot mess mostly batter as now using slices instead of a spear. Was terrible disappointed as this always been a must go to . read more

Fast , efficient and friendly attentive service on a steady busy holiday Monday. We had the fish and chips and a large Greek salad. The two young men serving had smiles for everyone dropping in for a late lunch. We will be back for another visit! read more

Fish was soggy and so were my fries. It actually tasted like it was already made and thrown in to the fryer when we got there. Seemed like it too as it came to the table suspiciously fast. Waitress was friendly, cook was not. Flavour of the batter was greatly diminished by the floppiness and sogginess of the fries and fish. I did mention this to the waitress, but did not take it any further as she was young and very friendly, but wanted her to know. read more

Went here last year hoping for great fish 'n chips and we were disappointed. The batter was so crispy it completely fell apart. If you like your batter like that then this is your place. I will say the customer service was excellent. read more

I've been going here regularly for a few years Mostly take out but after tonight I won't ever be back. When I went I wondered why the place was completely empty but soon found out as I left. There were 3 brazenly obnoxious drunks blocking the exit and none were there to eat. The 1 woman was screaming insults at me as I left. I don't think she worked there (I hope not!) but that kind of thing is inexcusable. I'll be surprised if this place stays open much longer. read more

My favourite place to eat in Port Hope. Fish: Crispy, with a light batter. Portion of fish is on the smaller side but I'll take quality or quantity. Shrimp: Excellent batter and cooked well. French fries: Possibly some of the best fries I've ever had. They cut them in house and you can taste the difference. Service: Feels like a family run restaurant, very warm and friendly. We always come here when we're in Port Hope. read more

Always like to visit this place when in Cobourg. (Also eaten at Whitby and Port Perry locations. Both just as good.) Everything's great: Fish & Chips, Gyros, salads, pie. Good simple meals in an unfussy casual restaurant. And staff are always friendly and welcoming. read more

mobile review My husband and I went for dinner. We had fish and chips and Greek salad - everything was good and worth the price. This place is a classic, no frills fish and chips place. The food is exactly what you expect and the prices are very reasonable. Our family of 5 ate for under $60. The best part of our experience was our server Sheldon. He was very friendly and seemed to genuinely care about ensuring that we were satisfied. If I ran a restaurant I would try to hire an entire team of Shldons. read more

We went there for Good Friday dinner and have never been treated the way Sheldon treated us before. After waiting over an hour we asked our server if our food was ready and she said there was 5 orders ahead of us still. Half an hour later she came by and said we were still 3rd in line. We had people that came in after us and had been served already. Sheldon came over and said its one day a year so deal with it. When we questioned it further we were told not to make a scene ( asking questions is making a scene), we were not rude we just wanted to know why we were waiting so long and if our food was coming. He told us we would have to leave if we didn't stop. We ended up leaving and going to Stanley's and have a great dinner and the service was polite and fast. read more
