This location tested every ounce of my patience!!!! I ordered at the drive thru and that went smoothly. Simple order: 3 piece classic fish with fries and coleslaw. Drive around and was quoted a total of like $16 plus. Wild, right?! I pay and was given an illegible receipt but I managed to make out all these itemized entries on my receipt , to which I questioned them. Yeah I had been charged incorrectly all these extra items I never asked for. So I kindly asked for a refund and a better copy of my receipt because at this point, I wasn't playing any games. Got that cleared up. It tooooook nearly forever to get what ended up being gross food. Undercooked fish , dry /cold fries and coleslaw thrown together. Even after I had been waiting a very long time in the drive thru, the worker comes to the window to ask me what I ordered. What?' I replied calmly, "Are you serious?" Beyond frustrated at this point. I really should have just demanded a refund for the entire meal! As I stated, the meal was garbage and not worth the real cost of over $10.00 plus! Occasionally you just want some Fried Seafood and Captain D's will fulfill that need from a fast food standpoint. No it is not classic Fish & Chips from a pub but it is a good quick substitute. I went with the 3 piece Fish Dinner with French Fries, Hush-puppies and Cole Slaw. Nothing to be disappointed in here. Drive-Thru is the usual route we choose when we get a craving even in a non-pandemic time. We asked for extra tarter sauce and they made sure we had plenty. Came in because I saw they had seafood gumbo for a limited time and I love gumbo. I went inside to place my order. I told the guy at the register that I wanted a bowl of gumbo and he said they were out, but then a worker from the back said they had some. I asked was it good and he said yes. So I asked what was the difference in size between a bowl and a cup. I went with the bowl because it was only $6.99 and plus if I liked it I'm sure I would've wanted more. My order came up and I asked for crackers....they asked if I wanted hush puppies and I said sure. I got home and the gumbo was still hot. I was excited. I stirred it and took a bite.....I stirred it again and took another bite.... WAY TO SALTY!!!! I could've even stand it. I couldn't take another bite. I don't know what it is ( nostalgia or weird cravings) that keeps me coming back to Captain D's once or twice a year. Yes, I can get better food elsewhere. Yes, service could/should be improved. But there's just something about eating previously frozen fish from a styrofoam container and dipping it into small cups of tarter sauce. The wait times for the drive they are exceptionally long, especially since you're usually the only person in line. I'll be back in about 6 months. read more

While visiting family in Birmingham, I had to have dinner at one of my favorite places, Captain D's. Big mistake! I've never been so angry and disgusted EVER. When we entered the restaurant, one of the employees was sitting in the dining area on his phone. Once he noticed us, he got up and headed toward the kitchen. His pants sagged nearly to his knees, exposing his underwear. Why we didn't turn around and leave right then is beyond me; we definitely should have. The crew consisted of three (3) young black males (all sagging) and one young black female who I assumed was the manager. She took our orders and the food came out quickly, but the optics weren't good at all. The young male from the lobby was now in the back prepping food. I felt immediate concerns over whether or not he washed his hands upon returning to the kitchen. After I placed my order I notice him wildly scratching his head over the food prep area with his bare hands. He didn't seem to mind me watching at all. After each plate was ready, he handed it over the counter to another young guy, also sagging. This guy would distribute the food and then proceed to park his hands down the front of his sagging pants. When my food was ready, the front counter male asked the guy in the back "Who's order is this?", to which the scratching male in the back says, "that n!gga right there" while looking directly at me. The sagging distributor then removes his hands from inside of his pants, grabs my tray, and hands it to me. My sister asked a third young male (sagging) working the drive thru for tartar sauce. A dipping cup was then passed to the guy in the back to fill with tartar sauce. After five long minutes, the guy from the drive thru shows up at our table with a cup of tartar sauce. As he turned and walked away, we were treated to the same disgusting, smelly visual provided by his other co-workers, dirty underwear. I immediately told my sister not to eat that mysterious tartar sauce. I went back to the counter and grabbed her some sealed packets. As a black man born and raised in Alabama, I have NEVER felt so disrespected in my entire life. The entire crew should be fired. And if you can't manage the place properly, close the doors for good. I'm not a huge fan of Captain D's, but my wife loves it, so when the craving hits, in we come - or through the drive through, most times. It has your typical fried seafood options, with assorted sides. I'm not a huge fan of fried fish - give me baked, grilled, or blackened any day. But it can be a guilty pleasure sometimes. Our main issue with this location is the fact that it is SO slow. The drive through always asks us to move forward and they'll bring the food out later - that way their time in the system doesn't look so bad on their numbers. We usually end up waiting five to ten minutes for our food. But as I've said, we always end up coming back. So despite the drawbacks, they must be doing something right. read more

Then there was another 8 to 10 minutes wait to get my food. I did not get what I ordered. The food was cold about 10 minutes later when I was ready to eat. This was a big disappointment. The food is usually fresh, the service is fair, the dining area could be cleaner. The food is usually fresh. Many of the items are made to order which is great. The drawback is that it takes it's not always fast during non-peak hours. The fries are inconsistent like many other fast food places. They can sometimes be a bit soggy. The service is fair. Good experiences, bad experiences, it's a mix. The lady who most recently took my order actually showed me what was in the boxes before packaging it to verify accuracy. She also gave us plenty of condiments without the need to beg. The dining area could be cleaner. It's not the worst and not the best. The overall health rating is a 93, which isn't terrible. Maybe I am comparing it too much with more reputable clean places such as chick fil a or Whataburger (in Trussville). In conclusion, It's ok. The food is usually fresh, the service is fair, and dining area could be cleaner. I must award the establishment 3 stars because I continue to return for seafood munchies. read more

Since I was in the area, I figured that I'll stop for some food instead of stopping at the Captain D's on the Parkway. They do have drive thru, put I always go inside just to make sure my food is correct. When I walk in, the place was empty except for two people that was waiting for their food. Headed up to place my order, the only employee I saw at the drive thru counter was on his phone FaceTiming with his back turn which he didn't turn around for one second to acknowledge me. Apparently, after five minutes of waiting, a female employee came out from the back and took my order. I ended up ordering a 4 piece fish dinner with fried okra and a side salad. I also got some fried oysters as well. Didn't take long for my food to come out and everything pretty much tasted good as with every Captain D's so nothing new. My fried oysters had a strange taste like they been in the freezer for too long since I was tasting freezer burn after chewing on them for a while. The big guy (something wrong with his eye) greeted us. My friend asked did they have any coupons... Oh my why did she ask that? He got so ghetto & smart with her & said, "How you going to come in and ask for coupons?" So after being smart, I started walking out & he told her I have coupons. The principle of it is that you should not get smart nor ghetto with the customers. He could have just simply said, "No ma'am or yes ma'am." Food is always fresh but that's because you are waiting on it! Every time I go here, I have to wait a long time for my food. Last time the person I was with ordered their food and I was left waiting for over 10 mins to place my order. His food order came out just as I was filling my drink. The staff are nice but obviously overwhelmed. They need to hire more staff. It's always super busy! Food is good, though, especially the cheese sticks. We stopped at one of the busiest times - noon on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Pleasantly surprised. The man behind the counter, Raymond, is a joy. He welcomed us, took our order and brought our food with a pleasant, professional attitude. He even checked in with us half through the meal. He made us feel welcome. My wife and I got there about 7:25 pm and the place was almost empty. I had the new grilled Tilapia with stuffed crab, my wife the fried shrimp. Hers was OK. Mine: The Tilapia was excellent, but the rice, green beans, and baked potato were cold; and the crab cake was burned on the bottom. The second baked potato was better but would not melt the whipped butter spread. The cook admitted she was having problems with this new menu item and replaced the crab cake with two stuffed crab (which were very good). Even though the food took over 15 minutes to arrive, at least the place was clean and the staff was pleasant. It was somewhat frustrating to have to eat in "shifts" as the individual items were redone, but it was nice that the cook/manager tried her best to rectify everything that she could. Usually, the batter fish filets are pretty good. However, recently the serving has changed. You no longer get a fish filet, you get fish fingers - thin strips of fish at that, and the ones I got were so dry. They are a huge disappointment. Recently my mother & I visited Cap't D's in Trussville. We ordered the country fried fish & when we got it, it was little hard pieces of dried-up fish. Or we thought it was fish. There was NO white meat in the pieces so we called the manager over for him to take a look at it. There were NO apologies but only that IF we liked, he would go & cook us more which he did. It was some better because the pieces were larger with some white meat. Talking to the manager, I told him that I thought the fish must have been left-over from lunch & he assured me (or tried to) that it wasn't & so I ask him then why was the second serving of fish better than the first. It wasn't little dried up, hard pieces of fish like the first was. And, why couldn't we have gotten the better fish the first time when we first ordered. He was new & young & I feel immature & he wanted to argue with me in a loud voice right there on the main floor of the restaurant & so I put a stop to it & told him that I had had my say & so had he & that I had NO more to say to him & so my mother & I left.
