I stopped by Captain Charlie's for lunch, and it was packed. I ended up grabbing a seat at the counter, and the service was good throughout my meal. I started with the small calamari. It was cooked well and tasted pretty standard. The surprise star, though, was their jalapeño hot sauce. I need to find out where they get that because it was so good. For my entrée, I ordered the swordfish tacos. They just weren't for me. Nothing was wrong with them, they simply didn't hit the mark for my taste, probably if the fish was different. Parking is in a small shared lot, and the whole strip center feels a bit dated. I wasn't parked far away, just off to the side near the larger restaurant. It was a little confusing at first because lunch is actually served in the smaller space a couple of doors down. With how busy they were, I wondered why they keep that setup, but I'm sure they know what works better than I do. The name caught my attention because it's also my father's name. You would never find this place if you weren't looking. It is in a fairly run down strip center. This is a perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. Inside, you have two sides of a restaurant. One size has an exhibition kitchen with booths along the wall and images of people having caught fish. The other side has tables with a full bar. We were seated right away, which was lucky because the place filled up on a Monday very quickly. We were greeted with bowls of coleslaw and waters. The menu here is quite extensive with handwritten specials, fresh catch of the day and smaller plates.. There are also mainstay pastas, and other smaller plates. The menu ranges from Caribbean food, to southern, to Asian, and anywhere else in between. We had conch chowder, fish dip, smaller plate of lamb chop with yellow rice and asparagus. Sesame crusted salmon over noodles with a soy broth, rocktopus (rock shrimp and octopus with potatoes), and a seafood curry. The service was attentive, and the food was delicious and fresh. Too bad we don't live in town, otherwise I would be here weekly and it would take me a year or more to eat everything. If you're anywhere near Palm Beach, Jupiter, or Juno Beach, you must look hard, but find Captain Charlie's! read more

It was the worst food I've had at a restaurant in a long time-I had conch chowder which was over spiced, I had trout dinner which had no taste , very oily probably seed oils, my friend has seafood rigatoni which was awful, way overcooked with no taste, the shrimp and bay scallops were overcooked. Dessert we had the coconut crème brûlée it wasn't any better tasted like store bought pudding-The only good thing was the server he was great. There is the regular menu- and then there is another menu of specials. So much to chose from! I have been to Captain Charlie's 2 Doors Down many times over the past 25 years but went the first time to The Original last night and it is actually better. The food is marvelous, the ambience is nicer (more room) & service was excellent! I had the Conch Chowder as well as the Linguini with Fruits of the Sea (shrimp, mussels, little neck clams & fish). We decided to stop at Captain Charlie's on way home. I was craving Escargot & Captain Charlie's serving format is unlike any other I've ever seen. Instead of 6 snails served either in shells or a small metal plate with indentation for the snails, i was served a bowl filled with many snails swimming in oil flavored with garlic. yummy. toasted bread on the side which you can soak in the garlic oil, eating it with the soft tender snails. The flavor of the snails plays well with the bread, oil & garlic. Snails not you thing. There is extensive, mostly handwritten menu with an extensive choice of seafood cooked solo or in combinations. Let's not forget the duck & plenty of choices for the landlubber. Salads with & without seafood & other proteins. My spouse had caesar salad with grilled shrimp & balsamic vinegar. Said was very good . Considering the size of crowd, service is good. We got water & Cole slaw as soon as we sat down, before we said a word. shortly thereafter a wonderful server took our drink order & gave us extra time to choose. Shrimp scampi was served with red onions, leeks, red peppers and loads of cheese on top. Not what I had expected. Told them I have lactose intolerance and they said they serve all their pasta dishes with cheese. I returned the plate to them untouched. They brought me back e same plate and removed some of the cheese. Obviously I did not eat the dish. They didn't say anything when they removed the dishes. But did take $6 off the cost of my dish. So many people have recommended it but finally decided to try it. It was extremely crowded on a weekday lunch. We were able to be seated immediately at the counter. There aren't a lot of tables and the counter gives you an up close view of the cooking action. The menu is extensive. Then add on the daily specials. Everything is cooked to order but it's fun watching as you wait. We tried the conch fritters. While they weren't terrible, I wasn't getting much conch. I think the pieces were chopped up super small. Too much filling. I prefer slightly larger pieces of conch with less filler. The remoulade sauce was delicious. I wouldn't order these again. I had the roasted oysters. It came with 6 large oysters. Absolutely delicious. A butter and cheese crust. The oysters were fresh and flavorful. I took a bite of the clams and linguine. At least a dozen little necks for the lunch portion. This was our first visit to captain Charlues reef grille. We called ahead to find out they don't take reservations for small parties but that the wait was minimal. We got there 15 min later and it was now 45 minutes. We waited outside (it was very cool outside). We were told we could go to the bar a few doors down but wasn't anxious to drink and wasn't sure how crowded it must be on there. Should have looked. Everyone seemed to have a a wine glass in their hand as their name was called. We were finally seated in a booth on the side where the counter was. Not super comfortable , height of table isn't well situated for height of seat. Had no clue how nice it was on the dining room side . Had we sat on that side I bet this review would have been better just based on that. Had no idea till we got up to leave and took a peek. Our waitress was lovely and was very attentive. We ordered a bowl of soup , since it was so noisy in there they brought out the wrong one but it was quickly changed out to the NE clam chowder. The chowder was creamy and hot but there were almost no clams in it, that was disappointing. For entrees my husband ordered the mussels and I got the warm salad. His mussels were overflowing and came with several wedges of toasted bread. My warm salad was disappointing. I had hoped for more squid and other seafood , the only thing that was a decent amount were shrimp, maybe 6/7 medium sized. I knew I was getting a warm sautéed salad but the base was not really enjoyable. I basically went digging for the seafood which there wasn't much. All in all it was a disappointment . My wife and I ordered take out and the team receiving the order was very friendly and respectful. The food was ready on time and hot when we picked it up. I got the Gumbo and my wife got the tacos and a beat salad. Food quantity was ample and overall the food quality was very good. Gave a 4 for the food and couldn't assess the ambiance and internal service team. We will eat in the restaurant this season and re-think my rating at that time. If I was local, I'd probably stop in from time to time, especially to dine at the bar. The chow is very good and fits the fair menu pricing. I like the smaller portion option they offer on dishes where they can, and especially like their wine list, which is better than you'd expect at a place like this. The selections indicate someone knows their wines, glassware too. My small order of Grilled Scallops was very good, very fresh. Others enjoyed Bouillabaisse and a small order of Paella (was actually quite large). The Fruit Cobbler was maybe the best of all, and their homemade ice cream also fantastic. I don't usually go out of my way to write reviews, but I had to for the crème brûlée here because it seriously stood out. From the moment it came to the table, you could tell it was done right. The presentation was clean and simple, but the real highlight was that perfectly caramelized sugar layer on top. It had that ideal golden color--not burnt, not too light--and when you tapped it with your spoon, it gave that super satisfying crack. Once you break through the top, the custard underneath is incredibly smooth and creamy. It has that rich vanilla flavor without being overwhelming or overly sweet, which I think is what makes it so good. A lot of places mess that up and make it way too sugary, but this one was really balanced. It felt light enough to finish easily, even after a full meal, but still indulgent enough to feel like a treat. Another thing I noticed was the texture--it was consistent all the way through, no lumps or weird separation, which shows they really know what they're doing in the kitchen. It also tasted fresh, not like something that had been sitting around. You could tell care went into making it. The portion size was solid too--not tiny like some places where you get two bites and it's gone, but not so big that it feels excessive. It was just right for sharing or keeping all to yourself. Overall, this is easily one of the better crème brûlées I've had. If you're coming here and skipping dessert, you're honestly missing out. So many options for delicious fresh fish.. it's always busy because the food is amazing. But it's definitely worth the wait. Our server was wonderful.. All but one of us enjoyed our food. My youngest daughter is gluten-free and she got the gluten-free buttery noodles. When we dines at Captain Charlie's in the past, we've tried unusual dishes. This time, we stuck to basics: First, the Gumbo was exceptional! A very authentic Cajun recipe, rich and intense. The "medium" was hot enough for me. The seared scallops were perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. Finally, the Yellowfin tuna asian salad was perfect. The tuna was fresh and rich and the dressing not too intense - there was a perfect salad with it. Our service was good; not great. Our server had obviously worked there for many years so everything seemed a bit flat. The restaurant has that long-time local joint to it. There were hordes of photos on the walls and everything was aged, but comfortable. Next time we want "just seafood" Captain Charlie is on the list. read more

Just the best night ever. We arrived and told we had a 30 min wait on a busy Friday night. We did not wait that long. This is always my seafood go-to, but I think I'm going to have to find another spot. This local legend used to be the best kept secret, but the secret is out and the quality has suffered. We waited in line for the restaurant to open which is usual because it's so popular. We were immediately greeted and seated (offered table or booth). They have a huge bar if that's your jive. Our waitress didn't introduce herself but gave us time to decide and the ancillary staff delivers waters and Cole slaw. We ordered and it was taking a while. Our waitress notified us that the "order ticket didn't make it to the kitchen." She thanked us for our patience. My hubby got the seafood Mac n cheese which barely had any seafood. I got the wahoo which was undercooked so I took it to go because I was craving wahoo and was just ticked about this experience. (The fish was delicious the next day when fully cooked.) The waitress checked on her other tables 2x but never came to our table. We had to wave her down to get the check. Upon further review, we noticed several health complaints under review.
