While the food was ok the staff are extremely rude and condescending to their customers , when i went to Captain Americas i asked for a vodka along with my meal and the waitress alerted the barman who came over and argued with me about buying the drink even though i had ID but it "didn't look like me" despite it being a gardai approved ID. Now that really is saying something as Eddie Rockets is known as "Empty Your Pockets" within my circle of friends..... I used to come here as a teen and had also been here as a chisler. I brought my little cuz here after the cinema on Saturday as much of a treat for me as for him. I ordered the deluxe burger which came with fries and was €14!!!! €14 for burger and fries. My Coke then cost nearly €3. €17!!!! I am sorry but that is nonsense. The burger meat itself was pretty good but not amazeballs. Salad on burger fresh enough and the bun was a standard Bundy Bun. The fries were OK, but pretty greasy. The only saving grace for spending €17 on myself was the fact that my cousins meal was €5. The kids meal deals are great value but I guess the clever peeps at Captain America's know that they can charge €17 for an adult to eat if they are only charging €5 for the kid. The kids meal - choice or burger, nuggets, pizza, hotdog, lasagne etc with fries and a drink (soft or juice) and a desert. The portion was pretty big too. So my lil cuz was well happy!!!! If you like good fun, good food, and a whole lot of crazy crap on the walls, Captain America's is your only man. Captain America's serves typical steakhouse fare, but with the added ambience of guiters and pictures of Bono tacked on the walls. Cap A's do fry a good steak though, so it is worth the effort of eating while labouring under the gaze of Paul Hewson's dead eyes. And, if you happen to be a short on the readies (aren't we all?), Cap A's do a great student menu. Burger + chips + soft drink = €10. Not too bad. And Monday - Wednesday is student nights, which is €3 pints and €3 cocktails, though the cocktails you can get for €3 are limited to the low-alcohol varieties like Blue Lagoons and Sex on the Beach. You can get the good cocktails for just a fiver though (their Long Island Iced Tea is sure to put hairs on your chest). According to their website, Captain America's student nights are accompanied by a band on Mondays, table quiz on Tuesdays and Kareoke on Wednesdays. Now, somewhere in the dim recesses of my brain I definitely remember a band of some description, but I have no recollection of either table quizzes or kareoke. Perhaps this is a very recent addition, or perhaps it is just a testament to the potency of the Long Islands. If you are planning to go on the student nights and just drink, food be damned, be warned! Cap A's try to keep the tables for people who are ordering food, and might try to make you stand at the bar. A way to get around this is to buy a single plate of chicken wings between everyone at the table at the start of the evening and voilá, you are officially dining patrons. My friends suggested Cap't Americas for dinner so I thought I'd give it a try. First, the menu is very hard to read because of the color combinations. Yes, red and blue are opposite colors, but you need to play with the hues in order for them to play off each other. The specials literally hurt to look at. I ordered the starter Buffalo Wings (€11.95) as my entree because on a scale of 1 to American, their proportions are American--and I had a mean craving for wings. You get to choose between three different flavors: BBQ, Cajun, and Hot & Spicy. I thought the safest way to go would be BBQ. In all honesty, the wings weren't bad, but I don't think they were worth nearly €12. Not to mention my wings arrived with sauce all over the bowl. I don't know what it was, either the heat or what, but I wasn't really feeling the place. On another note, my friend ordered the same, but she ordered a side of chips and they were kind of magical; trust me, you need an order of those! My table also ordered a pitcher of Passion Punch (€25), which was pretty good. It consisted of Absolut vodka, peach schnapps, apple juice and passion fruit purée. I'd definitely say this is a deal as it gave four ladies two full glasses! That's ~€2.50 per cocktail--it seems their alcohol menu is economically sound. We were craving burgers and decided to give this place a try. It was pretty busy for a Tuesday evening so we had to wait 10-15mins. Once we got to our table we waited almost another 10mins by the time our server came by so by that point we had our food orders ready at the same time as the initial drink order. We ordered 4 meals; the mushroom burger, the cheeseburger, the big smoke and the kids penne bolognese with salads, cheesy garlic bread and baked potatoes for the sides. The burgers are huge and tasty however there were pieces of small bones found in the mushroom burger (not just one but a few small pieces). As soon as we told our server she got the manager and they took it away and apologized profusely. We ordered the ribs in place of the mushroom burger just to be safe and it came out quickly and was tasty. They didn't charge for the mushroom burger but did charge full price for the ribs and the rest of the meals (no discount). We aren't originally from Ireland so not sure how restaurants normally work but usually in Canada they give you some sort of a discount or else give the replacement meal for free because of the inconvenience. Overall this place is just ok. They dealt with the situation well but the rest of experience and food wasn't enough to wow us to return. read more

Every time I come to Captain America's, I have such a great time! The food is always extremely tasty (especially the Frenchie burger, which I recommend highly, if you enjoy onion rings~!) and there's always quite a lot of it! Similarly, this place is quite good for cocktails and they have student days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (from what I can remember!) so some cocktails and other drinks are extremely cheap those days! However the cocktails in general are really tasty (Woo Woos and Sex on the Beach, of course~!) I let my husband pick, and we shared an app and an entree. While the menu is very American, the food itself has a bit of a twist. Fried mushrooms: pretty good. Just what you'd expect. Americans typically dip them in ranch, but these were served with garlic mayo. They should bottle this stuff, because it's pretty killer. I even ate the remaining dip with the chips (french fries) that came with our entree. Enchilada: interesting... it was an enchilada, I suppose. The chicken was in pieces, rather than shredded, for one. Mostly, though, the seasoning was... unexpected. It had more of an Italian flavor, rather than Mexican. It wasn't bad, but I don't think that I would order it on purpose. It's always interesting to see how American food is translated in another country, and the prices are good. I used to LOVE coming here when I was younger - I just thought it was the coolest place, EVER. To me, it was like a grown up McDonalds. Actually, I think I'm right about that too! It's basically like an American diner meshed with an American steakhouse - burgers, chips, chicken, milkshakes, cocktails, leather booths, neon lights, music memorabilia...all mixed together for a good night out. I have been coming here for years, since I was a kid and use to colour on the table clothes. I will often pop in here for one of there big, tasty, cheap cocktails when I am just out and about in town and I even had a birthday here a few years ago and it was still as fun as it was when I was a kid. The place is loud and buzzing and has a great atmosphere, the food is good and the portions are large, as are the cocktail pitchers. I rarely leave a restaurant so angry as I did on July 31 2010. This is my second and last time ever going to Captain Americas. Thanks a lot for ruining a birthday. No matter how old you get you are still a kid inside and for my boyfriend's 28th birthday he wanted to go to Captain Americas because 1. The Captain has been his favourite superhero since forever. 2. This restaurant is no where to be found in America. We entered the restaurant around 5pm and were seated at a table in the back. It takes a while for a disinterested waitress to come over to take drink orders. We wanted two waters and a butterscotch milkshake. I asked her "Do you do anything special for birthdays?" HER: Yes And she was gone. Then the hostess comes up to the table and says that there was a party booked where we were sitting in an hour and a half and if we would like to move. She said we could move to a table by the window and we were more than happy to move and not bothered by this at all. While in the middle of picking up to move the waitress comes back and takes our order, the New Yorker burger and the Sicilian Chicken. It sounded healthy and tasty, right? At the new table we received our water and a vanilla milkshake. Vanilla isn't bad, but when you are paying 5 euro for it, would be nice to get the right one. No one came back to the table and someone else brought out our food. They set it down and didn't even acknowledge us as they walked away. The burger looked and smelled delicious, the Sicilian Chicken was actually dry pasta that had a horrible sweet smell that made me nauseous. I gave it a taste and it was so salty and sweet at the same time, it smelled like coconut. I was completely grossed out. No one came back to the table. My boyfriend had finished his meal and I picked at his fries not touching my pasta and needed a long overdue drink refill. Finally when a new waitress came back she was told about the wrong milkshake order and the disgust with the untouched pasta. I still didn't know if or what they did special for birthdays. And after saying I would like more water we got the bill instead. They obviously took my meal off and were nice enough to remove the milkshake even though my boyfriend drank it, he just mentioned that it was the wrong flavour. I think why I'm most upset is that they didn't seem to care about our desire to celebrate a birthday with them AND most of all no one ever came to the table to replace my meal before my dining companion finished eating. Before reading this review, it is important to understand that I am an easy going person, I seldom lose my cool and I have traveled in places I wish nobody has to travel to (aka war zones), so I am not picky about food. Unfortunately it is the first time in at least a decade that I have left a place so disappointed and angry, so I am writing this review after several hours to voice my opinion. There are things in this restaurant that the staff cannot have control over, like: - The cozy space (I have seen larger cages and buses) - The amount of people (it was packed) - The noise (especially the screaming children) Still, there is one thing that can be controlled: the quality of the food they serve. My order was simple: a New Yorker, half pounder, no onions, fries on the side and a coke. - The burger arrived quickly (7 minutes top) but it had onions. It was a minor disappointment: I just put them on the side. - The meat was overcooked, dry and absolutely tasteless. Basically it felt like chewing cement. Note that I was not asked how I wanted it cooked, so it was not just a misunderstanding. - The fries were overcooked as well: browny, crispy and oily. I have to admit that when the staff realised that the only good think served was the coke, they were apologetic and - judging from their eyes - mortified. I could not understand if their being mortified was because nobody complains about the food or because they know they serve garbage. Anyway, the waitress asked me not to pay, the cashier wanted to wait for the manager and did not want me to pay and the manager wanted to write the whole meal off. This would have made sense if I had wished to visit a second time; since this will never happen - and because am not a free rider - I insisted to pay and I left immediately after. What they did not understand - even if I stated it clearly - was that I just wanted to pay, archive the whole experience as a mistake and leave as soon as possible. It is funny to note that on the menu they boldly state they have unbeatable prices. Too bad I know at least 10 other restaurants where the burgers are not only cheaper but also way better. Each time, I tend to order the same thing, but my miss tries something new. For her, it's hit and miss. The service is terrible, however. The wait staff are rude and never friendly. Once, we came up for a table and the hostess seated us. Then the waitress came by and said that we'd have to promise to be gone by in 45 minutes because a party is coming in for that section. they said they had one, but I'd have to "promise" to leave by 8 as a party was coming in for that section. It wasn't even the message, so much as the way the message was given to us. The wings are decent, though they can be quite stingy with the bleu cheese and might try to charge you if you get a scabby waiter. The sampler platters are rather fun and not "too" bad of a value. The drinks are fairly watered down and I've avoided them after the first two times. I can say that I find the salads to be of very poor quality and I'm often still hungry after the enchiladas. The burgers are filling, as are the chicken fillets. With regards to the burgers, they tend to way over-cook their meat. So asking for medium-rare almost always gets you well-done. Rare gets you medium-rare, and so on. I do return on the odd-occasion. Would likely return more if they lowered their prices and taught their staff some hospitality manners. read more

My husband and I love American food, so we visited this restaurant hoping for a fix. We sampled a few of our usual favourites: Buffalo wings: We chose the spicy option. The wings came out with a little spice colouring on them but no hot sauce! Wings should be smothered in hot sauce. They had absolutely no flavour. The bottom third of the bowl was full of oil which was very unappetising (was this supposed to be the sauce?!). The serving size was generous, however, they were cut into tiny pieces. The blue cheese sauce was bland and clearly just out of a bottle (its really not that hard to make fresh blue cheese sauce). Ribs: The meat was tender, however, it was not fall apart tender like I prefer. The ribs did have a spice rub over it which was ok, but the sauce, which was served on the side, was just a tomato sauce with a very slight BBQ flavour. Very disappointing. The taco fries were ok, but should have been served with some sour cream. The food was terrible and overpriced for what it was. However, the service was prompt and the staff were friendly and professional. The surroundings were ok too. These are the only reasons I rated this place as 1 star. read more

There is an option for rice or chips but ask for half and half and you get two hefty portions of each. There was also a Happy Hour(s) offer on drinks so we got a 3Ltr tower of a cocktail (can't remember the name but it was something like "Yeah but I know the owner") for €25, usually €35. They have this offer on beer as well. Damn I wish we got the beer. The afore mentioned cocktail doesn't taste too bad but provides zero drunkenness but some headache-ness There was a few of us and most of the girls where from DIT. DIT students should have a card that gets them buy one get one free so everyone's meal was pretty much half price. The night was a bit of a let down though as we had went there for the karaoke but the machine was broken and we called it an early night as it didn't seem like they where going to pump up the tunes anyway. Overall a great place to go for some US style (or Chinese in my case) diner food, but not the best for a night out. If you have the DIT card you have nothing to lose. On our way to an event last night, my friend and I were looking for a cheap and cheerful bite to eat. We popped our heads into no less than 4 restaurants en route which were all as empty as you might expect on a Wednesday in January. Out of desperation for a little atmosphere and craic we followed some other diners up the stairs and into Captain Americas. The place was jammed!! Families, couples, groups of teenagers, there were people from all age groups and demographics. The food - tex mex, steaks, burgers - isn't exactly healthy but our nachos and garlic fries were tasty and hit the spot. Cocktails were €6 so bonus points there. Although most of the Grafton Street premises has not changed regarding all of the famous props, autographs, pictures and memorabilia. But the food & service has, and not in a good way... The Menu has not changed much but if your not going to change it, at least keep the standard up. Every time I go here I order the Hawaiian Burger and I could see the quality of the burger diminishing over the years. The burger is now thinner, served with less fries and seems as if it should be coming from a fast food joint. The Waitresses use electronic order pads which does speed up things but the food has suffered in quality. Monday to Friday the place will be packed with students availing of the drink promotions offered to them and you would be lucky to find a free seat at the bar. The usual system of PA's is still used by the staff to alert customers that their table is ready. During Christmas the place will be full to the brim so I would recommend booking a table in advance. Waiting for a table at lunch time is ok, the waiting time was short. The staff is friendly and fast, but if you get wrong food served, it is a sign of bad organisation. My partner asked to modify the food from spicy to mild, it was nevertheless spicy. A double disappointment. read more
