This place certainly isn't at a location where you expect to find crabs, but they do offer quite the selection. We had our bikes on the rail trail and stopped by afterwards for some food. First, very slow service, we were the only ones there took 45 mins for two cold sandwiches and 3 burgers, fries were cold when served. Way to expensive for what it is. Shrimp salad and burgers $19.99 served with chips, $1.50 upcharge for fries and no choice of breads. Was told no reg bread, no ice tea, this was at like 6 pm. Ordered sweet potato fries and onion rings was told later not available. Paper on tables very annoying, if eating crabs it's fine, but not all the time!. This place deserves one thousand good reviews! My parents and I were hesitant based on the lack of reviews and photos and location BUT we took the risk and we are so glad we did. OK, it turns out size does matter. Big and meaty and it took me two hands to handle. Everything about the HUGE crabs (what did you think I was going to write) were perfect. I was there in early May and expected to get light weight (winter crabs) this time a year but they were nice. Just the right spice for me. This isn't a fancy place - it's a steamed blue crab house with paper rolled out on the table and lots of folks pounding away with the mallets. The ladies were really nice and they were working hard with the all you can eat steamed crabs crowd there on a Wednesday night. I wanted the larger crabs and I'm not sure what the deal,was on the others, but the Super Jumbos were cheap - I mean to was an expensive dinner at $72 with a tip ($55 1/2 doz. crabs) - but I loved it, I made a mess with crab fat, spices, and and crab shells everywhere, I was in heaven. So disappointed! We went on Sunday at 1:00 for the AYCE crabs. They were cold and the meat was dry. They were definitely leftover reheated crabs. I told the waitress and she said she would make sure round 2 was hot. Round 2 came out the same way. After round three of cold dry leftover crabs I spoke to the manager. She said they had new kitchen staff and they were leftover as suspected. Round 4 came and we finally got fresh hot crabs. They were very small but good. By the time we finally got the fresh crabs we were turned off and mostly full. How disappointed to spend $300 on cold small leftover crabs. Something tells me by reading the reviews this isn't the first time they served leftovers. I was taking my dad and the family out for crabs for my dads birthday. My dad loves steamed crabs. I came here on recommendation from an old friend that lives in the Hereford area, and I can honestly say that the experience was worth the 45 minute trip up 83. Captain Bob's is a tiny little crab house located in the even tinier area of Railroad, which you will easily miss if you're not careful. There's a small counter as you walk into the place, with dining areas on either side. I brought my husband, my mother, and my newborn daughter here one Sunday afternoon for my yearly crab pilgrimage. Hey, I'm a native Marylander - I have to have crabs every summer, even if it's just once a year. My friend said that this place had good ones, so I thought, "why not"? Why not, indeed. I will advise you now that if you plan on dining at Captain Bob's, make reservations. They have AYCE crabs on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sundays here at a reasonable 34.99 per person. Disclaimer: Not one word about AYCE containing small/medium crabs that they "can't get rid of". We know this. We're of the ilk that will put down dozens and dozens in the space of an hour, because we're good like that - so size doesn't matter to us. If you're slow, this isn't going to be a good deal for you. /end disclaimer Now, then. The AYCE deal comes with unlimited fries, a cup of Maryland crab soup, and one side of your choice (seems to be cold salads, mostly - I had macaroni salad). The crab soup was really good, chock full of crab meat, corn, onions and other goodies, while the macaroni salad was the creamy Amish-style type that I really like. Those were great. And the fries, WOW. Skin-on potatoes combined with malt vinegar = heaven in a box! I LOVED them. But, of course, you want to know about the crabs. The crabs were about medium sized, but they were VERY heavy and full of meat, cooked and seasoned just right. Many places get the seasoning wrong - either it's not enough and the meat is bland, or they're overseasoned to the point where you have to wipe off the coating with a napkin. Not so here - perfectly done. I was thoroughly impressed. So was Hubs - he was the lucky winner of the day, with some of the heaviest crabs in the batches that they kept bringing to us. Momma had the crab cake platter and enjoyed it quite a bit. Said that the crab cake was just right, not too much filler, and was also very impressed with the fries. Service was wonderful. They kept bringing crabs with no hesitation whatsoever and took time out to make conversation with us, which was really nice. There's a 2 hour limit here for the AYCE (so they say), but they didn't seem to be in any particular hurry to rush us out and they let us stay for a bit so that I could feed my newborn daughter (who, sad to say, isn't quite old enough to enjoy the crab bounty just yet). There's also crabs available to take out, as well, which is a good idea if you live nearby or don't have that reservation. I would highly advise making one - this is a popular deal going, the AYCE, and both sides of the dining room are plenty full, at least they were when I was there. They do have outside seating, as well. Our total for two AYCE crabs and a crab cake platter was 120 dollars with tip - not bad at all. Very reasonable. There are a couple of negative points, however, that I do want to touch upon: - There were a couple of persistent, pesky flies buzzing about. Now, it's a seafood house, and crabs are, by necessity, dirty creatures for the most part before they're cooked. I'm aware of that. But I was a little skeeved to see them heading for my daughter's face constantly. I'll have to invest in some netting before I bring her back there. - Although the deal states AYCE fries, we only got one serving of them for the whole meal. We were filled nicely, but it would have been nice to have them offered by the server. Still, we can't complain too much. - The worst part of the experience, for us, was actually FINDING the place. The GPS directions were NOT at all clear, and I have a feeling that this is a constant problem for them. We had to call the restaurant several times in order to get clear on where we were supposed to go. For the uninitiated, you have to make a right turn from Main Street (past the People's Bank and the railroad tracks, there's a big white house on the corner) and follow the road all the way down - the railroad tracks should run alongside if you're going in the right direction - do NOT go straight or turn left at the fork in the road. You'll see pretty country, but you won't see a crab house. To their credit, they were really nice and understanding when we called them for the 5th time, frustrated. Despite these setbacks, I would definitely recommend coming up here for a crab feast. Great stuff. We'll be back. read more

The fish sandwhich was very overcooked and dry. The oysters looked (and tasted) to be of the frozen variety and the clam strips were extra chewy (again, probably frozen). I came here on a Wednesday for some all you can eat crabs. The price is $29.99 to eat as many crabs you can from 6:30-8:30. I would say this is a good deal if you can eat at least 12-15 crabs. I would say your best bet is to focus your time on the lump meat in the body and not worry much about the legs. The crabs are good and loaded with plenty of old bay seasoning. This was as pleasant a meal as I have had in a long time. We walked over from the Jackson house, two of us from Columbus, OH and three from Dorset England. One of us could not eat shellfish, the signature food, so we ordered a mess of their "famous" broasted chicken. If it is not famous, it should be! Don't pre-order! They'll be cold. I stopped by on Father's Day to pre-order 2 doz to be ready for 5pm. I got there at 4:58pm and waited until 5:11pm to be served. I was watching the kitchen the whole time to see when my crabs came out, but the server picked up a bag off the floor to hand to me when I was finally served. I asked how long they'd been there and was told they always get pre-orders out about 5-10 minutes early, so add 10 minutes sitting on the floor before 5pm, the 11 minutes after it took me to get served, the 20 min drive home and you get cold crabs. Had I shown up at 5pm, ordered, waited till ready, then left, they'd have been piping hot and I'd have been much happier. What a waste of $150. read more

Not sure what all the fuss is about but we ate at Cpt. Bobs yesterday and the service was good and the crab soup was even better. We had both the cream of crab and the Maryland style and they were both very favorable. So good in fact we brought home 2 quarts of the cream of crab. We also had a dozen of the steamed crabs and the were spiced up very nice. Both the wife and myself had a good lip burn going after a couple of crabs. This place is not what it once was. My mother got 2 dozen large crabs for $160 on Friday. For my mom to be able to do this was a big deal for her. To her that's a substantial amount of money but it was a thank you gift for someone who helped my brother get a job. They were empty and not larges anyway. If I go to md line or paddy's in dallastown or Charlie's in west york I get heavy large crabs especially right now this time of the year. I can't say this place sucks but they are inconsistent. .sometimes they crabs are great and most of the time they are light filled with water and mushy. My gf and I would go 2x a week or more and they started giving us smaller carbs than we paid for. They only way to get the right size u gave to bring it to their attention or complain.
