I started shopping at Roma Textiles back in the early nineties and must say I admire their business practices. You get some of the best materials and notions at reasonable prices with much needed information from Frank. In case you're not convinced of what my opinion of this store, here's proof. I've moved 3500 kilometers from the vicinity and who did I call first? They have the products I need at a price I can afford with the right personality to keep me shopping there.

Like LA Fabrics on Queen, but on steroids. A huge and beautiful assembly of embroidered, beaded, and embellished fabrics. If you are looking for fabric for evening wear/bridal, this is your place. If you are looking for fabrics for day wear that skews to business formal, you will find an amazingly beautiful selection of lightweight, couture-house name silks, fabrics appropriate for trousers, skirts, fitted suits, etc. Menswear suit-type woolens were to be found in all weights, colours, patterns (pinstripes, houndstooth, etc). Suitings of all manner. I agree with Roma M.'s assessment - upon setting foot in this place, your mind immediately starts spinning with ideas for couture-style pieces. Prices are quite reasonable for the calibre of the fabrics, IMO. Also, they have out on their table the oh-so-wonderful Marfy pattern catalog to browse (as well as other glossy Italian couture periodicals). It was the current issue and apparently the order it regularly. So if you, like me, get very irritated with Marfy's on-line browsing facility, you could flip through actual paper pages of the catalog (though you'll still need to place the order yourself). Roma Textiles doesn't carry any patterns, not that you would expect them to, given the clientele that they cater to (i.e., dressmakers, designers, etc - those who draft their own patterns).

When I spoke to a rep via chat, they also gave me a link to get some free samples (choice of dish cloth or cheesecloth). For shipping, you have the option to pick up at the store (close to Yorkdale Mall) or delivered to your door for an extra fee. I went to pick them up since it wasn't too far. From the outside it looked somewhat sketchy. But never mind that. The products were great ! I didn't get a chance to go in cuz before I even parked my car, someone had come out w/ my box. Perhaps they really wanted to leave as it was close to closing. The burlap was easy to cut & I liked the lace a lot. There are many different sizes for these things! Window owners everywhere, this is a window covering solution you won't find at any hardware store. If you have a ceiling or bulkhead that sits directly on top of the window frame -- that is, there's no wall space between the top of the frame and the ceiling -- you've probably done what everyone does in that situation: mount a half-moon style rod hook on the frame itself. So you know what happens: you can see the top of the frame above the top of the curtains, and you get a line of light coming in at the top, because the curtains can't sit high enough to cover the whole window. Well, Mark's got an app for that. :-) Ask him for the ceiling-mounted rings. They come in all the same colours as the rods. Oh, and you MUST buy the rods, too. You know the kind you get in hardware stores, the expandable kind? You know how they sag in the middle because they're not sturdy? And how your curtains get stuck in the gap? And then you have to pull too hard on them, and the next thing you know you've ripped that cheap rod hook right out of the wall? Well, so far, I've bought... let me count in my head...six sets of solid rods and ceiling supports from Mark, and they're the greatest things. I keep showing all my clients and tenants, and they're amazed they've never seen such a simple curtain solution anywhere before. I tell them, just go see Mark at The Drapery King.

One of their sales reps told us we could buy a curtain to take home and then exchange it if it wasn't the right colour even though it's in PERFECT condition. Had them cut rods but they weren't cut properly even though the measurements were CORRECT and they won't do anything about it. Thought about having them install curtains too but when we realized that Mark, the owner, chooses (on a whim or based on how he's feeling that day) who gets a better price for such services, we opted out. It's hard to support small businesses when this is how they run their business - especially when it's something custom and so specific like curtains, rods, etc!
