Min Pin Pils at Canyon Creek Brewing, Billings
Bruce K.

My evening spot for beers and dinner, this was a friendly and pleasant time. I had two of their "MIN PIN Pilsner" and sat in the corner with my laptop for a couple of hours. Hooray for a comfortable spot to write some Yelp reviews and relax after driving! Food truck out front and I had something vaguely Asian that was tasty. Staying at the west end, I wanted to check them out. It seemed odd that the parking lot was full at 4:45pm - then I learned it was "Cruise Night." The place is set up like (because it is) a cash bar. You walk up, tell 'em what you want, and pay. I asked about getting a flight - but was told - "we don't do flights." I got the Foggy dog and would give it 3.5/5 for Hazy IPA - hoppy enough, but lacked body, metallic finish. My second choice was "What the Hell" - I'd give this a 3/5 for malt liquor. It was easy enough to drink but reminded me of watered down stout - DNF. The brewery had a good crowd to check out the shiny classic cars, had a live band that played a few oldies I knew, a BBQ food truck - humming cash factory. Bar service was friendly and fast, great amount of outdoor seating, beer was average, food choices minimal.

Canyon Creek Brewing is brewery visit #239 for me! I actually arrived well before they opened at 2pm and walked in right after the doors opened. Yes, it's pretty empty so far but two folks came in for growler fills right after I arrived. CCB has a nice big space and a large bar but surprisingly very little bar seating. I generally default to sitting at the bar so I can talk with the beer tenders a bit more. Fortunately I was able to grab one of the five stools since I walked in first. CCB has A WHOLE LOT of their beers on tap. I counted 20 on the menu monitors overhead. Unfortunately for me they don't do flights so I went with a few half pints to get a feel for their beers. First up was the Irish blonde ale. Light with a bit of a wheaty finish to it. An easy drinker for sure. Dog Collar Marzen is smooth with light malty flavors although I did get just a little caramel flavor from it. I love barrel aged beers so I had to go with the barrel aged Rabbit Head red. I was surprised that I didn't get much aroma from this one so I wasn't expecting much in taste either. I was pleasantly surprised to get some good Irish red flavors with nice oak as well. I couldn't pull out any bourbon flavors though. SWPFTD would like this one although she doesn't always enjoy the barrel aged beers. The barrel aged Cold Creek Scottish ale was up next. Now this one definitely had the barrel aged flavors I expected but not overpoweringly so. The whisky was definitely there, and yes I use the Scottish spelling. It's the Scot in me coming out. Makes me want to stand alongside Robert the Bruce against the troops of Edward II! Last for me, today anyway, is the "What The Hell!!" This is described as "a dangerous black malt liquor". It hardly seemed "black" as I expected much darker. It was really the color of a good red. Flavor wise it went down very nicely though. If I can get a crowler of this to take back to my hotel I will. No food at CCB but they did have bags of fresh popcorn and some other snacks for sale. $1 for the small bag, which is about the size of your typical lunch bag, is a steal compared to movie theater popcorn. CCB is a thumbs up for me. If anyone is a glutton for punishment, please, follow my brewery, and distillery, reviews from across the U.S. and beyond! https://www.yelp.com/collection/-8iscFkpiiCI563-FDfwGg and if anyone is wondering who SWPFTD is you will have to check out my review of Black Market Brewing Co in Temecula, CA to understand. Yes, you will need to read into it a little to get the joke but I have confidence in you!

I love that CCB has beers for everyone. I like their fruity Creek Waters while my husband prefers the dark What the He

Between the service and the beers everything is fantastic. You can always find the owner walking around and visiting with customers!

Was nearby (in Billings, MT) and decided to stop by Canyon Creek Brewing (CCB). Glad I did, because they have done solid regulars (CJ (Vern's dog). I had some great tastings of their beers. They rotate different beers in. I met Ron (brewmaster), who clearly understands the German Bier Purity Laws, as all the German biers ROCKED!! They have food trucks to keep you fed. Ann served me and made sure I had all I needed. If you are nearby, give it a try. Enjoy!

The Corndog Company - Mini Corndog

I don't much to say except, this is the best Corndog in the country! Don't miss this food cart…read morelocated in the Rimrock Mall parking lot in Billings, MT. I went with the mini, which is still a large corn dog, but next time I'll go with the larger one. The breading was flavorful, with a hint of sweetness from the honey, and fried to a dark golden brown. The hot dog itself was excellent. I will say the service was great here as well. I went with the traditional Ketchup and Mustard, but apparently next time I've been told I need to try it with honey. Keep this cart in business and go get yourself a corndog! You'll be glad you did.

Full disclaimer: I don't like corndogs. Or rather, hot dogs. Cornbread? oh yeah! gimme gimme…read moregimme. With that, I don't know what possessed me to visit this food truck. Call it lucidity gone awry. The black and yellow markings -- like a bumble bee - caught me in that weak moment. We tried three items from Corndog's basic menu: The Mini, the small corndog, the deep fried cheese bomb, and the fried babybel cheese pop. Yep. That's right. Everything your doctor warns you against eating on a regular basis. The food came out quickly and in keeping with the bumble-bee theme, you can have honey drizzled on everything. No extra charge for it. With the first bite, I noticed two things: First, the taste of the cornbread coating. I cannot believe that a corndog has coating that good. Forget all that school lunch or frozen food aisle blecch. Second, the coating was nearly as thick as the hot dog. They don't skimp on that. The hot dog almost got lost in that coating. The ratio of cornbread to hotdog worked for me. The cheese bomb and babybel cheese pop were a mix. One was okay; and one so-so. Cheese and cornbread -- that's a combination I can fully support. I was looking forward to tasting it. The cheese bomb wasn't bad. It's a piece of cheese, like string cheese, available in pepperjack, cheddar or mozzarella, and then coated. We picked the cheddar, but in hindsight, the pepperjack might be the way to go for bringing in a pop of flavor. Overall, the bomb was okay, but didn't have the same wow factor as the corndog. Oh, and it was the same size as the mini corndog, so pay attention when they hand you the food or you'll end up with a big bite of surprise. The person I was sharing with thought I was crazy and that the bomb was the best thing ever. So, make of that what you will. The babybel cheese pop was the least successful for me. Again, I didn't think it had much flavor and the cheese on this one got lost in the batter. Kids would love it, I think, because it is kid-size. And -- kids. Overall, The Corndog is an interesting change of pace for food trucks in the area. This is their first location in Montana. It was probably a three-and-half star stop, but the corndog hangup is mine and I can't ding them for that. Besides, they were really, really, nice people.

Oktoberfest the restaurant is gone; a casualty of the virus. Happy news: Oktoberfest Imbiss the…read morefood truck, lives on. It brings many of the same foods that drew people to the restaurant but makes them available around town at whatever business wants a food truck at lunch or dinner that day. When the restaurant closed its doors, the owners resisted pleas to make the recipes of their most popular dishes available because they wanted to bring those dishes, or adaptations of them, to their mobile venture. It's worked out. For some reason, I prefer the food truck to the restaurant. Not sure why, really. It doesn't matter anymore, though. Oktoberfest Imbiss has many of the most popular items from the restaurant and on special occasions, like the first day of Oktoberfest, a special menu to celebrate the occasion. On that day, the owners parked their truck at a local brewery. Perfect: Oktoberfest celebration, German food, local beer, and outdoor seating. It was a tossup between getting the Sauerbraten or the Schweinshaxe. I admit curiosity as to how they were going to get Schweinshaxe , a unique looking dish, in a container for those wanting to get it to-go. They managed. And it was delicious. I've tried a few things from their regular menu, some are hit or miss for me -- the German Poutine, a regular menu item and the spaetzle, a special-occasion dish are just okay. Just as did the restaurant, there also have the pretzel - the size of a small plate, schnitzel, and bratwurst. Never much of a fan of bratwurst despite having lived in parts of the country where it has its own place as a mandatory food group - I found the currywurst to be very good. It's slightly sweet, mild, and hits the spot when you're craving something that's easy to split into more than 1 serving. The sides from Oktoberfest Imbiss have two of my favorites. Sauerkraut and red cabbage. The red cabbage, without a doubt, is my favorite food from this truck. It's a red cabbage sauerkraut, but sweeter, made with apples and cloves, and is a colorful complement to the more neutral-color main dishes. I can forego the other things, but not this. I am obsessed with it. Oktoberfest Imbiss has my vote for a top favorite food truck. I'm glad the owners didn't give up on keeping a local presence and sharing their recipes..
