Preparing for class
Dawn G.

We had so much fun at our first canvas paint event here recently. I've been keeping an eye on the scheduled events and looking for a painting that I thought would be fun and less challenging for this non-artist. These classes are popular so reserve your spot early. Upon arrival we were shown to our seats, provided with an apron, and instructed how to get paint. Then it was mimosa time with orange or orange mango juice options. The orange mango was delicious. Other beverages including soda and bottled water were also available for purchase. When it was time to begin, our instructor stepped onto the raised platform and explained the use of each brush and how she'd refer to them. She demonstrated how to mix paints to create the desired colors and provided instruction on the first step for the painting. I appreciated the way she demonstrated each step and gave tips along the way. She also made it clear that there wasn't one right way to paint this piece and that we should allow ourselves some creativity. It was really fun to see each person's interpretation of the painting and everyone seemed to have a good time. I also learned a lot during this first session. How to mix colors, the importance of wetting the brush to make the paint go farther, and how to fix mistakes. Looking forward to attending another event!

What a fun experience! The lead artist/teacher did a great job in leading the class and gave ample time for people to create their own masterpieces. Having a date night or going with a small group of friends makes this really fun as you can see what you all come up with (despite everyone having the same instructions). This is a small and intimate setting, advised to come 10-15 min before the class starts so you have time to settle in, grab some wine, and get your painting supplies.

My boyfriend chose this place as a surprise date. It was so fun!! The teacher Hannah was amazing and so helpful and there was a great selection of wine and beer. I'm honestly an awful artist but they made the paintings very doable and broke down the steps. Would definitely come again!

Had a marvelously fun evening painting & sipping. Easy to follow instruction & demonstration by one of the staff who then walked around room to check on attendees and answer questions. Friendly atmosphere, no pressure. Novices welcomed. We enjoyed the experience & would return. Additionally, owners MJ & Laura were exceptionally kind to assist us with a coupon, honoring the delay in scheduling due to Covid. A big THANKS to them for their attention and care to unusual situations!

Super cute place and the artist and other worker were super kind and helpful and made you feel comfortable even if you were super nervous about painting and it looking horrible! The only thing is that it was very very stuffy in the space and they need some fans or windows open to get some air movement! I got very hot and uncomfortable because it just was sooo many people in a small space and no air movement! Otherwise, I would totally go again!

Fun experience this morning - for almost everyone there except for me. I entered the space in a very cheerful and optimistic mood. My happy mood was enhanced by the beautiful, welcoming space. Perfect for painting, the space has lots of natural light, huge windows, painting aprons hung along one wall in a neat row, tables set up with canvases, brushes, water-cups, and easels, and a small bar in the back of the room. Everything was neat, tidy, and clean. Thick black paper covered every inch of table space, though, so it also felt like a comfortable space to make an error or two. All post-painting clean-up is included in the (very reasonable) price, except for rinsing out your own brushes, which is really easy to do. I've heard many times that I'm a very self-aware person and that I know myself very well - know who I am, know what I want, and know what I don't want. I am a creative person who frequently comes up with completely unique creative projects, and I'd thought (going in) that this would be a great experience for me. One of my closest friends, Emily, is a San Antonio-based artist and painter, and she facilitates/teaches similar events. I'd always thought from her photos that events like this looked like so much fun! However, life is full of lessons and surprises - not all of them pleasant. The teacher said to use as much paint as we wanted (yay!!), but to be sure to let each layer of paint dry prior to laying on the next layer (sounded like sensible advice). I felt frustrated when the first layer of my canvas didn't dry long after everyone else was finished with their second layer of their paintings. I also ended up feeling constrained and irritated by the specific nature of the instructions, not something I'd thought would be an issue. Every painting ends up looking different from every other painting in the end, and mixing it up (if the mood strikes you to do so) with colors and shapes is actually encouraged, so I'd thought (going in) that there would be enough uniqueness from painting to painting that the lack of individuality/lack of originality inherent in the painting process & instructions wouldn't have bothered me. I talked to the teacher about my canvas first layer not drying long after everyone else's first layers of their canvases had dried, and she helpfully blotted my canvas with a paper towel to help it dry faster, but by that point I was already way behind everyone else. When I finally started progressing through my second layer, my painting started to look like total crap. This also bothered me a lot more than I would've thought that it would have. I tried in vain to fix it, but despite several tries, I was unable to get it to look even close to decent. I kept reminding myself that I wasn't going to try to sell this painting or anything, and that the purpose of the event was to have fun. However, I absolutely loathed my painting. I do actually really like the vast majority of what I produce creatively, so this was a very unusual and negative feeling for me to have. I liked literally everyone else's paintings, too!! And everyone else seemed to be having fun. I can usually have fun in the middle of a traffic jam, let alone while brushing happy greens and yellows and reds on a canvas, so I am actually really surprised that I didn't enjoy this event. My husband, who came with me, commented afterwards that my creative process is almost always self-initiated, self-conceived-of, self-completed from start to finish, and free-flowing - which is absolutely true - so perhaps that is part of why this experience wasn't my cup of tea. By the end, I felt pretty dejected, although I did enjoy looking at everyone else's lovely artwork. I thought my husband did a great job with his painting, and he had fun. Near the conclusion of the class, we were instructed to sign our artwork. My husband scribbled a classy-looking signature in black paint in the bottom right corner of his painting. I grabbed my most fine-tipped paintbrush, dipped it in dark-green paint, and wrote at the bottom of my painting in round, highly legible lettering: "Piece of S**t." I'd decided to title my painting, instead of signing it! I'm honestly really trying to swear much less than I used to, and I've made a lot of progress on that, but titling my painting in this way definitely cheered me up to some extent. If you're nervous about your artistic skills, please check out the photo of my painting below, and rest securely in the knowledge that it is highly unlikely that your painting could possibly end up looking as crappy as mine does! 4 stars because most of my dissatisfaction wasn't their fault, it was my fault for not knowing myself better. Recommended, unless you're a super type-A personality and/or unless your creative process is similar to mine - but you still could enjoy this experience even if either of these things is true about you! It might still be worth a try!

Such a fun experience! Definitely recommend. Going in I was a little anxious because I'm really bad with art. However, the host was very lively and made sure everyone got what they needed. The paints were in the back and you can get up to get more paint whenever you needed. The painting was step by step and was easy to follow. She made sure to pause after each step to wait for everyone. She even walked around to offer help. I thought what really made the night fun was that she encourages everyone to get creative and do their own thing even if it's from a mistake! Without a doubt it is a class for everyone at any level! Fun event to go with friends or as a date! You can buy wine to sip on but it is totally optional.

Canvas is the perfect way to spend an evening! Guidance is provided and creativity is encouraged. Fun music was played throughout the evening and the instructor is happy to provide 1-1 assistance if needed... and of course the variety of beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks were great!

Very fun experience to paint if you haven't paint for a long time or you never experienced it before. Price is on the higher side($39) so it really depends on how you feel about your experience. They don't check on you to see how you work on it, not much interaction.

Finished product!

HIGHLY recommend this paint & sip spot! This is the place if you're looking to have some creative fun or just looking to do something different for a girls night or date night. I've been to Canvas twice and both times were a 5-star experience. I didn't know what to expect going into it since I have little to no artistic experience. If you're worried, DON'T BE. The instructors are so kind and truly do break the paintings down step by step. I especially loved the flow of the class. They give you directions for a few minutes and then turn up the music and let you relax and paint. It's the perfect balance of instruction and getting to do your own thing. The classes don't feel rushed at all and there's plenty of time to walk around, grab another drink, or refill on paint. I didn't love my painting the first time around but did exponentially better my second time. So rest assured that you'll probably improve if you come more than once. Everyone I've taken has had so much fun and keeps asking when we're gonna go again. For a 2-hour activity where you get to take an art piece home, $40 is a steal in my opinion. Find a painting you love & register! You won't regret it :)

Fun evening with my meetup group. They are well organized and space gets pretty full but our party was mostly together, which was nice!

This is a great brunch spot with the girlies, a super fun work event, the perfect birthday activity for any age - and you get to take home something memorable. Something you created alongside people you shared this memory with! Did I mention that there's FOOD? I just got a coffee this day, but my sisters had some tea and a pastrami sandwich. I stole a bite of the sandwich, it was indeed delicious. Next time, I'm going for a brunch outing and I WILL be indulging in some mimosas. The most beautiful pain and sip place I can think of. So you come in, order food and drinks if you'd like and then find a place to sit. Go pick out the pottery piece you would like - I will warn you, this is the hardest part of the process. After that, there's a station with all the supplies you may need (paint and paint palettes, paint swatches after firing, brushes, sponges, stencils, paper towels, food paper to sit things on, water bowls, I'm sure there's more I'm missing). Return to your table, paint, order more food, play with the super fun games they have?? (We played with a miniature pool table. Sure, it was missing some balls, but how often do I get to play with a mini pool table?), and when you're ALL done, take your piece to the counter. They'll have you take a picture of your item before paying for it. You will use this picture to pick up the item(s)! You pay for it and it's ready to pickup in 8 days! Plan ahead :) I do wish that there was a little more guidance when you arrive, but with that being said, everything *is* on their website. Some information is a little confusing or not current, however. I also wish that this place was a bit better staffed, but I know that's an issue many face and this business appears to be fixing! When it was a little rushed, I could sense the frustration of the person behind the food counter. Completely understandable, but it leaves room for improvement! Overall, I can't wait to come back to this place. I painted the plate, and I kinda want to try this again and see if I can improve! Can't wait to bring my mom here, maybe for Mother's Day?! You know what, let's all bring our moms here and create something special - memories and pottery!

I like that they serve more food than other places I've been, so you can eat dinner while you paint. We ordered the charcuterie board for 6, 2 pizzas, and a few bottles of wine. The charcuterie board was yummy with classic foods and we really enjoyed both the spring fever and spinach and Gorgonzola pizza! The wine list was pretty small with about 4 white options and 4 reds ( I think ?) but we were all satisfied with the ones we got. I like that they had instructions on every table of how to prep and paint everything from beginning to end so we could be very independent through the process! From what I saw, most pieces were between 25-60. They had a decent amount of options to pick from, including a plates, bowls, mugs, and trays, as well as animals and trinket holders. I would've loved a few more paint colors but what they had got the job done! There was a little chaos with the payment because of our reservation, but everything got sorted out and we had a great time! I can't wait to see my finished product! *there is not a dedicated parking lot, only street parking

Awesome little pop up shop in NE Seattle where kids and adults can get crafty!…read more Great kids classes for creative kids, first time in this location, but we enjoyed their classes before and its nice to see them in this new NE Seattle space. I particularly like their gift workshops where your child is engaged in multiple fun, creative art projects and comes home with terrific handmade presents for the holidays that are individually hand wrapped. In all seriousness, I don't know what was more impressive: the great art my kiddo produced, or the fact that she beautifully wrapped her own artwork/gifts. They have some really great ideas for kids classes that are simply not cookie cutter. The classes are effectively done: just in time for presents for the holidays. Not a soap carving, macaroni necklace or potholder in sight, these are actually some pretty unique, one of a kind treasures. I appreciate that they stretch the envelope of things that kids can make beyond the normal and routine --here kids can make a tile mosaic, a beautiful decopage bowl, or sugar skulls for Day of the Dead. Some pretty creative stuff. We've signed up for a lot of art classes, and are not fans of the "draw this" school of art instruction, but prefer a fun, truly creative class. This place importantly gets a thumbs up for fun from my little customer.
