Went on a Sunday, very busy. Had to wait a bit to be seated. Very, very loud. Was in a group of 5 and could only really talk to the person next to me bc I couldn't hear anyone else. This place is more bar, less restaurant. Very dark. Food was good. I had the Baja fish tacos. My group was happy with their food. Service was fast but hard to understand the server, especially with how loud it was. Unfortunately, I would not come back here just to eat but if I wanted to make a pit stop somewhere for a drink or two, then maybe.

This was such a cute fun find while looking at holiday lights around E. Passyunk and13th. There was protein options for everyone and even meat-free me could pick from seitan or mushrooms which was a welcome surprise in a Mexican restaurant. I had their seitan and mushroom burrito yum. The service was quick and the mocktails and drinks were awesome also. I'll be back!

Went to this Mexican restaurant on the edge of Passyunk. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Since the outside was so nice, we decided to do outdoor dining. I ended up getting a coffee and Churro French toast. The wait was incredibly long. We must have waited like 2 hours to get our food. Other people got their meals before us even when they came after us. The waitress even like discounted our drinks because of the wait. I finally got my Churro French toast. There was cinnamon sugar brioche. It also came with berries and hot chocolate sauce. It was pretty unique without the traditional bread. I liked how soft the brioche was but didn't like how different it was from the traditional French toast.

If you want delicious and friendly wait staff this is the place to go. Went here for a quick bite before hitting the Road and we were not disappointed. Cute restaurant with outdoor seating and we opted for the outdoor patio to enjoy the last of the unseasonably warm weather. They do have Patio heaters. Food was wonderful and fresh with huge portion sizes and to say we went home with leftovers was an understatement. Wait staff are attentive and friendly and anything we needed was brought out quickly. Parking in Philly can be challenging so would recommend a Rideshare.

Service top notch! Food amazing! Ambiance is chill and the music curated by Shawn is definitely worth a seat at the bar. Shawn was an added bonus to an already great night -- Super attentive, best service ever! For sure visiting any night Shawn is bartending Monday through Wednesday. I've been here plenty of times and can't say that I've ever had a bad experience or terrible food. Today, I got the mushroom fajitas, and me and my friends shared some chips and guacamole and queso. Guacamole was yummy, the queso not so much to my liking but not too bad, just not for me (something was missing). Anyway, I'll never stop coming here unless they start messing up on their service and food quality. But make sure you come visit Shawn as Shawn was the highlight!! Monday through Thursday evening people! Be there and leave a great tip!

This restaurant will always hold a special place in my heart, because not only is the food really really good, but you feel so welcome as soon as you enter. The thing I really like about it is it's so diverse from the employees to the clientele. I just had an overall great experience! The first time I went with a friend, we ordered a lot of food. I got birria tacos and he got enchiladas. Everything was absolutely delicious. We got a side of the chips, guac and two types of salsa. And when I tell you it felt like the chips were never ending it absolutely did. We also opted to get the margarita pitcher, which converted to maybe about six margaritas for us, which was definitely worth the price. We didn't try any appetizers, but they did look really good. The location wasn't very busy and the ambience inside really added to the atmosphere of just a chill night with a friend. Will definitely return!

We ordered to go this time but, other times we ate here too and every time it's been really good!! They have all kinds of tacos and you can order whatever toppings you want on them and the red salsa is so good! Definitely recommend the guava drink too! They also have outdoor seating on the patio which is nice.

It's very good and customizable. Wait wasn't too long, and the service was prompt. I got the chicken enchiladas, and they were fire. So was the pomegranate margarita. Do reccomend, do attend. Really hit the spot.

Booths and bar seating is available as well as a patio on weekends. It is located in a sketchy area but a police car is stationed on the corner. I felt as safe as I do in other areas of Philly. Street parking is available within a few feet. The cocktails were very good with many different kinds of margs and other drinks. Beer and wine are also available. We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. The branzino was cooked nicely with good flavor. The rice and beans and Brussels spouts and mushrooms were all delicious. I'll definitely be back!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

Honestly El Rey is great!…read more As a Los Angeles native, Mexican food is always a "not as good as California" affair, and with that bar, it's hard to find anything that holds a candle. But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! Laying aside my California bias, El Rey is a fun time every time we come.

I hadn't been to El Rey in years, but we scored last-minute Valentine's reservations and WOW. The vibe was lively, warm, and perfect for a fun night out. - Let's talk about these STEAK TACOS . Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. That's not a craving... that's infatuation. - The Chayote Salad completely surprised me. Fresh, bright, and paired with their homemade hot sauce? My palate was awakened. I even brought it home (with dressing and hot sauce on the side) and it still hit! Speaking of heat -- if you love spicy food, ASK for their homemade hot sauce. It's bold, fiery, and addictive. I genuinely want a bottle for home. Service? 10/10. From the manager to the hosts to the bartender -- everyone was kind, attentive, and patient. They even remembered me from Valentine's Day, which says everything about how they treat their guests. Bathroom Check: Clean? Yes. Cute ambiance? Yes. Great mirror for photos? Absolutely. And again -- CLEAN. El Rey, I'll be back soon

There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
