Horrible experience! Never going back. I went in advance asking for "jelly nails" (google it) They told me to buy the polish for & come back in with it. I did. They sat me with a tech who immediately had a bad attitude about trying the polish. She said they didn't have the right light to dry it. I asked "what kind of light does my polish need?" She said "I don't know" I gave up and asked for a design with their polish. She told me to pick out the colors after I showed her a pic. She was rolling her eyes a lot and showing how annoyed she was. I felt so mistreated I just got my things and left. (The man at the front desk was kind and profesional though). I went to fabulous nails instead and they were AMAZING!! Just go there. They were so kind and made my jelly nail dreams come true. They acted like my request was NO PROBLEM they use the same exact drying light as Canterbury!!! Canteburry could have done it but the woman was too mean to try. I made an appointment today, a Saturday and was right on time. My nail tech, Sara, seemed immediately irritated as we walked back to the chair, as if I wasn't moving fast enough or had done something wrong, although I literally picked my nail polish in about 30 seconds and then followed her right back. I have never been to this nail place before, so maybe there is some kind of etiquette I am not aware of. She proceeded during the whole service to act impatient and gruff. She barely cut my toenails, and when I asked her to cut them more she didn't seem to like that either, even though I am paying for this service. This was a basic pedicure and lasted about 30 minutes, so it is not like I overextended my time or was overly picky. I have never felt more unwelcome during a service that I was paying for. Henry, AWFUL!!! Even after I showed him that my sister who was sitting in the chair next to me was clearly getting a good massage, I got nothing. He barley touched my leg. He slid his gloves around with no pressure! I called him out. He didn't care. He also did a poor job of painting my nails and they were crooked. I later found out he was in the back and didn't want to be bothered. Oh, and we moved chairs because both chairs were broken. We go to the other side, my sisters chair, broken. Completely janky. Helen that works there does a good job. But know it's 80 degrees and the most chairs are broken and torn up. Addendum: So, the young ladies up front found out what happened, immediately called the manager (at home) he had them call me back a few minutes later to tell me how sorry they were and that he was cancelling the payment I had given. Visited this place a couple of months back. Asked for pricing prior to the appointment as it wasn't listed anywhere. They verbally told me a price, which was high but agreed to that. Nail technician starts and all is good. When it came to the design, he called another technician to do it. Well that was a secondary charge that they didn't tell me about as the quoted initial price included the design. But because he couldn't do it and they needed another technician, it was additional. The design was pretty basic and only on two nails. At the time of payment they surprised me with a really high price to which I couldn't do anything about at that point. And... the dip powder they used was painful on my nails, was very difficult to remove and completely ruined my nails. Now I'm just waiting for my entire nails to grow back. Lesson learned! read more

I usually love this place but today the lady there named Helen did my nails and she was nice but they turned out so bad. They are not the color I asked for (which is probably not her fault to be fair), they are poorly painted, and are not the length I asked for at all. She didn't ask if the length was okay until she had cut every finger and by then I didn't want to make her restart. I'm only giving this two stars because the nail tech was very sweet, however, this is absolutely the worst manicure I have ever gotten in my life. I was at the nail salon for 2 hours, and I asked for tips (with gel and not acrylic) and she told me that it was not possible to do tips with gel and that we would have to do dip powder to achieve the look I was going for. The reference photo showed the nail art in an almond shape, but I had asked for a "square/oval" shape. Multiple nail techs came over during my appointment to look at my nails and didn't say anything about how horrible they were looking. I didn't realize everything looked so bad until she was almost done. She asked me if everything was fine and I have very short answers and told her I liked the chrome. I did not like anything else about this manicure. She also mentioned to me that my "mail beds were challenging and that's why they weren't lined up" I was clearly unhappy and she thought she was doing me a favor by "not charging me" for my index finger nail that looks horrific... and ended up charging me $82 for this set. Obviously I am upset, and I did not give them a call or ask to fix it because I was preparing to go out of town; and now I am stuck with this set for a bachelorette trip this weekend. I've used Canterbury nails several times when in the Birmingham area for business. I went two weeks ago prior to visiting my daughter at UA. The manicure I received destroyed 10 healthy, pretty natural nails. The woman who did my manicure over buffed my nails to the point that they would snap straight across the nail left to right down below a safe and comfortable breaking point. It looks like padding is actually popping out underneath where the nail had broken. It will take me six months to grow my nails back. I do not use acrylics, gel or anything artificial on my nails. Over buffing, poorly trained and managed technicians!!! Be careful!!! Walk in clients be careful they will let anyone work there that are not careful and aware of proper nail care. I am giving a two star review as I have had only 6 of my 10 natural long nails snap off. read more

After a bad experience here several years ago I decided to give Canterbury another shot today. I came in an hour before close and requested a gel manicure and eyebrow wax. I was sat down quickly and Tammy got started, and while I felt like the process was moving fast I chalked it up to not having a manicure since before covid, but she never even put lotion on my hands. I was tired though and decided not to say anything. We went back to wax my eyebrows and Tammy kept pushing me to get a lip wax (to the point where it felt rude), and then gave me the most uneven eyebrow wax I've ever had; it was the first time I've ever had to ask a nail technician to fix something. We walked out and the other customers were all gone. I was charged a $3 convenience fee to use a DEBIT card! Before tip it cost $53. This is not only the most expensive manicure I've had in Birmingham, it's by far the worst. They rushed me out the door and I was in a rush to finish errands and I've just now taken a look at them... un-trimmed cuticles, the paint doesn't reach my nail beds, and they aren't even filed evenly. I feel like I've been totally ripped off. Shame on me for giving this place another chance, learn from my mistake and spend your money elsewhere read more

Update: it's been a week since I tried to give this place another try. My index finder was cut with nail clippers Because the nail tech was so aggressive and rude (they did comp my pedicure because of that). Then the tech that tried to fix it told me to "calm down ma'am" when I explained I like my natural nail shape (essentially the shape of a parenthesis) after he started to clip them into COFFIN shape & then told me they're too short to fix. I almost left in tears! My nails look AWFUL! My toe nails had to be Re-done by another tech as the paint was running off of my nails and my toes are still not straight, the nails were clipped crooked! It's a week out and I am still hiding my nails I'm so embarrassed by how they look! read more

I have been coming here for the last several months prepping my nails for my wedding and I absolutely love this place. If you are really looking to pamper yourself be sure to get a pedicure because they have theses wonderful massage chairs that really make you feel relaxed while your feet soak. They also do a great job with gel manicures and I love their color selection. They always end each manicure with a hand massage which is so lovely. Came in on Memorial Day since they were one of the only places open in the area. The girl who did my nails was Eva I think, she's so sweet and asked me a lot of questions about my life. It's been almost a week and my nails still look almost perfect! I have been shocked at how well my gel manicure has stayed. It's the best gel manicure I've ever had. My nails are completely different shapes and I paid for a manicure but you wouldn't even know it. Helen is awful and her attitude is terrible. My nail is uneven and because she didn't want to fix it she said "that's just your nail" but didn't even push the cuticle down to make the nail even. Both hands are completely different shapes. Went here with friends and 0/10 wouldn't do it again. The environment is nice but the way she acted was awful. This is just a chop shop at a bougie location. I came here twice. The first time was nice ,however I did bleed due to bad cutting at the cuticles. But since it was decent I decided to come back for an acrylic set. I had previously got sns from somewhere else. And when I tell you the guy started taking my sns off with another fake nail. I was shocked, but since I didn't know any better I thought that was fine. However, when I talked to one of my nail tech friends. She said that was the worst possible way for them to take it off. Since my first review I have had some very negative experiences with this place. I think customer Service is important but I'm guessing that this place doesn't. I usually go bi-weekly for a fill in and pedicure but the quality of the nails have decreased since the person that started doing my nails is gone. After a week, my polish is peeling and my acrylic has lifted and they just look overall bad. I've since found another nail shop because I was tired of paying so much money for subpar work. Prices are expensive and work was just OK. I wish the lady that did my nails the first time was still there. Everyone else I've tried is not worth the mo My boyfriend (you know men don't pay attention) got me a gift card here as a stocking stuff so I HAD to go back. $57 for a basic pedicure with gel?!!? Never, ever again! They also charge more for gel on feet than hands. Same polish. So basically they charged me $27 for adding gel polish to their basic $30 pedicure. I went here to get my toes done for a wedding. I got gel polish and while my toes had wet nail polish, the nail technician was talking and not paying attention then proceeded to set the UV light on top of my wet nail polish. Instead of taking it off and starting over, the technician added extra nail polish which resulted in a bump with in the polish. The next day, I noticed that my big toe was red and sore every time I took a step. It progressively got worse throughout the day and that evening, puss began to come out. I genuinely love getting my nails done and go as often as I see fit. My most recent experience at Canterbury was fairly good. I really love how sweet and amicable the nail techs here are. They are fairly busy any time they are open, so I would definitely confirm your appointment before arriving. The deluxe manicure includes a great hand and forearm massage which is the main reason I choose them over a regular manicure. Aside from the positives, I would say their selection of nail colors are quite disappointing as I have seen at other salons and stores. I feel like this is a way to encourage customers to upgrade to gel manicures. My friend and I were pressured by another tech to upgrade to gel polishes and were told the polishes we were getting would only last 4 days. It lasted almost a week, just fyi :). After carefully selecting a fuschia shade I wasn't particularly fond of, the tech also trimmed my nails without asking. I prefer longer nails, and any girl can tell you how much work it takes to maintain and grow out your nails! While drying under the lamp, one of my nails had smudged, and the tech was already holding all of her bags and ready to walk out the door. I showed her the smudge, but she just said, "It's okay, just let it dry." I wouldn't ask her to stay and fix it if she were in a rush, but would have appreciated it if she had either asked someone else to fix it or just give me some polish remover and the polishes so I could fix it myself. I'm sure I'm not the first person ever to smudge their polish, but that definitely could have been handled better if they want customers to return without hesitation. read more

I chose Canterbury Nails as the place to bring a group of 5 girls to get our nails done during a bachelorette weekend. I called them on a Monday, and told them we would be coming in that Saturday. They said it would be no problem, and to just call an hour before we headed that way on Saturday. I was a little skeptical that they would really be prepared for us. However, when I called an hour ahead of the time we planned to be there, the person I talked to said they already had us down on the books, and they would be ready for us when we came in. Walking in, it WAS pretty crowded, but not in the pedicure area. I was shocked to see 20 pedicure chairs, and sure enough, there were 5 chairs already prepared for us. They had 5 people ready to do our pedi's, and we were in and out in 30 or so minutes, which is unheard of for 5 pedicures. One thing I will say was super nice is that they gave us complementary mini bottled water. Because we were in a little bit of a hurry, we were glad they were quick. However, if I had gone for a relaxing spa pedicure, I might have been a little disappointed at the speed they finished. I love a good loooong foot and calf rub when I get my pedicures...especially since I only get about 2 pedicures a year--it's always a special treat! Went on a Sunday to get a standard pedicure and dip/SNS manicure. My manicurist was so brutally aggressive with the nail file on my hands that she drew blood from nearly every nail. When I asked if the color was correct, she assured it just needed additional coats, but the final product was much lighter than the sample. My fingertips are raw a day later and the edges of each nail are messy.
