Probably the best restaurant in north Kildare. Top quality imaginative dishes at decent prices.

Good. Can't. Stop. Eating. Must. Stop. Can't. Stop. Hidden away above the Castletown Inn, Green's Restaurant is often forgotten by locals, until they return. The food is quite simply impeccable. I had a goat's cheese salad to start which was toasted to perfection; the flavours of the salad and the cheese mingling perfectly. Then chicken breast over potato gratin with some type of jus (i.e. gravy) You also get served extra potatoes and veges for the table. Now this may sound like a very plain meal to you, and you would be correct in your assumption. But, you would also find had you ordered it, that the quality of the ingredients, and the way in which it's cooked, transcends any 'plainness'. It's tasty, mouthwatering, delicious, good food. Service is always fantastic, very attentive and lovely waitresses. And the cherry on top - the price. Three of us ate starters, main courses and deserts, with one bottle of wine. The total came to €80. Amazing value. Generally speaking, the starters are around €5.50, mains from €11 - €15, and desserts, €5.50ish. The only reason I haven't given this place five stars is the decor. Having been here for quite some time, the place is looking a bit long in the tooth and desperately in need of some 2013. Really bright lighting is always a massive bug bear for me - I think lighting can make or break a dining experience. If they got these fixed, this place would be a sure-fire 5 star-er!

Going on the advice of Yelp users we chose Green's and were very pleased. Starters were priced at about €5 each with mains at roughly €12 each and again desserts at €5. The restaurant is located above the Castletown Inn and one tip I can give is that you should pay close attention to the steep stairs on the way up cos you will be about half a stone heavier on the way down. We were greeted at the door by a uniformed waitress that showed us to our table and hung our coats for us, gave us our menus and then went away giving us time to get settled in. We liked the decor of the place, clean and comfortable with linen tablecloths, flowers and lit candles on each table. It turned out that the toilets were sparklingly clean which is always a good sign when you come across it. This was a late afternoon Sunday visit and the restaurant was about a quarter full. Two families were eating, both with young children who were well looked after and very well behaved - (thank God for iPads and iPhones.) Kids food was half-price. We started with the beef and Guinness sausage which was delicious and then we both had the lamb shanks. These boys were huge and it took me all my time to put mine away and then finish hers as well. Luckily I have the body of an athlete. Just hope the Guards never find where I have it buried. We could only manage one dessert but I had two pints of larger and the bill only came to €48 ex tip. Really enjoyed it and will come again. Highly recommend it. I would rate it more highly except the food while excellent seemed homely in that I feel (probably wrongly) that I could produce a similar meal at home.

Both the owner and the waitress were friendly and attentive. Went straight to entree and ordered the veal Pizzaiola, a sauce consisting of tomatoes, chopped garlic, and oregano. It also came with vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower) and potatoes (ordered grilled garlic potatoes). Regrettably the veal was too dry even for two thin pieces, the texture tasted a bit like jerky. However, the pizza sauce was well made, packed with garlic and oregano flavor, and had rich, buttery, refreshing tomato dices. Could stomach the veal with the sauce. The vegetables were nicely done, especially the cauliflower temperature was spot-on. The potatoes were even better, skin fried to a crisp while the texture remained creamy. Also had a combo of three flavors of ice cream for dessert. The flavor overall was good, not overly sweet. Overall: 3-3.5 stars. Had to say the star of the dish, the veal, was disappointing. Surprisingly the sauce, the veggies, and the potatoes were great, and the ice cream was fine.

The server, manager, and owner were all attentive and encouraged us to take our time. They also thanked us for coming in on such a gloomy night. Our table was next to one of the windows. There was a lit candle on our table and fresh flowers on the windowsill, which made for a cozy feel as we watched the rain pouring outside. I ordered the carbonara with cream. It was delicious, but I liked my sister's pasta primavera better for its flavor. This is a lovely spot for date night or treating visiting friends.

The trick of course is not to order the wine. At €22 per bottle of mediocre red house wine, that really pushes up the final bill. Last year the early bird menu included a free bottle of wine between two. Will know better next time but will definitely be back. Brought the missus here for anniversary dinner yet again and delighted to find it has lost none of its class or charm. The main event is the food. Beautifully cooked by the new head chef, it is so far beyond what I could cook at home, it shows the difference between a professional and an amateur. We started with the smoked haddock balls and a cajun chicken salad, absolutely scrummy and very filling. An important tip is not to eat the beautiful bread and butter they bring cos you won't have any tummy room left, so take care, you have been warned. We both had duck in plum sauce for mains and it was simply delicious. It was tough to eat the full sticky toffee pudding and the belgian chocolate mousse deserts but hey! we hung in there and managed it. Coffees were drunk slowly with the last of the wine. We had a lovely meal in super surroundings and would highly recommend it to everybody. Just be a little careful of the cost of the wine. Total cost of the meal for two including a pint of lager came to €71 ex. tip. Would give it full five stars but would caution against the unexpectedly high cost of the house wine. God knows what the more expensive wines cost!
