Corn dog, chili dog, fries, and deep fried pickles.
    Heather F.

All of these years coming to the island and we have yet to stop here so we decided to give it a shot. Best things about this spot are the milk shakes, deep fried pickles, shade, and a fabulous view of the water. That is all we will be back for. We also had a corn dog, chili dog, and fries that were kind of disgusting. There are much better places to grab lunch in town or packing our own lunch would have even been better. We felt it was pretty pricy for the quality and amount of food we got. The service was slow and the line was long.

Probably the best pit stop on the island!! Get the hamburger and fries. You won't be disappointed. We've also enjoyed the corn dog, chili cheese dog, and of course the star of the Cannonball - deep fried pickles! They also have multiple drink options and soft serve ice cream. You always order from the right window and they serve from the left window. Pay attention to the line because many people stand there not knowing how to order. Additionally, the wait goes fast so don't worry about all the people. Order anyways. Enjoy the magic!

So you've just biked about 1/3 to 2/3rds around Mackinac Island. You're hot, and maybe a bit thirsty or hungry. The Cannonball is there. It's a little shack out on British Landing that has the most spectacular beachfront view, nice shady forest, and some picnic tables. Great place to stop for bit of lunch if you like simple fare like burgers and the like, or to get a shake or slush. The deep fried pickle is their "world renowned" item, and I have to say it was pretty darn good. Cut in spears, breaded with a nice crisp seasoned crumb crust and a pickle that wasn't too salty or sour that was equally crisp. Sometimes joints like this rely on being the only game in town. This one seems to remember that quality and service count. They have evening hayrides with a barbecue dinner (ribs and chicken) which you can book as well.

The location is beyond beautiful. By the time you arrive at the packed gravel patio that fronts the cannonball you have most certainly experienced one of the most "Pure Michigan" landscapes. Even on one of the busiest weekends of the year (Labor Day) there is ample seating, and more than enough beach to go around. The food is typical of a concession stand. You will not experience a culinary revolution here, unless your gentle palette has never indulged in the savory sensation that is the hot dog. The demand is high as is the volume of customers, you will wait a few minutes. This should not surprise you, this place is so far off the beaten path that Tom Hanks and Wilson ate here on Sundays (those scenes were cut to shorten the movie). Bathrooms and walking trails surround the stand. Be sure to checkout their poison ivy display, you may get a chance to bring some of the island home with you.

Cool looking little food shack and that's what you get but not cool very poor

Ok! Wow these place is the only food on the path that's not Main Street so they get more business then they can handle but I'd say keep riding and find something in town. Food isn't good and service is worse. They don't honor the yelp coupon upon check in and give you attitude when you try to claim it. They got our order wrong forgot one of our corn dogs and said I didn't order that many it says on the recipient and showed me. I said I told you 3 and only got 2 so she typed it in wrong no big deal I just need another. And they seemed irritated with me at that point and said well your going to have to pay for it. I replied I have no problem with that I'm just trying to feed my kids. I would definitely not come back here, normally I give places a second chance but when I get treated this badly and foods not good anyways it's not worth another headache on a fun day.

We ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings to celebrate our anniversary. The service was excellent and the food was good, but it felt a bit like someone was trying to replicate "fine dining" without actually being fine dining. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good, but the presentation often felt like it was trying too hard for what it was. We were surprised that for having dress code there were a lot of people in jeans and shorts, making the experience feel less than actual fine dining.

From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable--Lawrence, our server, was wonderfully attentive and made us feel so welcomed. We started with the brioche pull-apart bread and jumbo shrimp cocktail--both fresh and flavorful. The beetroot salad was an absolute standout--beautifully balanced and bursting with flavor. For entrees, I had the local lake trout, which was perfectly cooked and delicately seasoned. My husband declared the baked cod the best he's ever had, and my son devoured his chicken fricassée. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, dessert arrived. The warm apple strudel and the Grand Pecan Ball were both over the top--a sweet, satisfying end to an exceptional meal. Take your time, relax, and savor every bite. The Woods is without a doubt a must-have dinner spot when visiting Mackinac Island.

He even wished my mom a happy Mother's Day before taking our order, which was a nice touch. We started with the Street Corn Nachos as an appetizer, then ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich, both with fries on the side (an additional $4 each). This was an excellent place to bring my mom since she's vegetarian, and the restaurant had plenty of vegetarian-friendly options. The food was excellent, especially the nachos -- the queso was amazing. The restaurant also gives you a lot of customization options, like swapping chips for fries for an extra $4 or adding protein to the nachos for an additional charge. That said, while the nachos were really good, they were still $18 without any protein, which honestly felt overpriced for chips, cheese, and vegetables. We came during lunch service, and overall the food, service, and view made for a great experience. However, it is definitely on the expensive side. Most entrees seemed to range from around $20-30. Still, if you're willing to spend a little more for quality food, generous portions, and a great atmosphere, it's definitely worth visiting.

I'm picky and a foodie so I'm very hard to please. I have absolutely no notes on the meals we had at The Straits. My husband got the pistachio crusted cod whereas I had the short rib. For the entrees we had to pay $5 to add fries to our sandwiches, which I think becomes overpriced for what you get. The truffle fries didn't really have any truffle flavor.
