We stayed at Candlebay last night and it was amazing! From the welcoming moment that we got there, it felt so homey! Connie went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. The mattress was so comfy! This morning the smells of a homemade breakfast were to die for. I was getting something from the car and Connie even walked out to make sure we were staying for breakfast. She even had gluten free bread! Breakfast was all the guests sitting together and talking like old friends! This place is a must stay! We highly recommend and should we get lucky enough to come back to Freeport, we will stay here again! read more

So listen.... If fall/Autumn had a picture in all the dictionaries.... If fall/Autumn had a smell, a sight, a sound... touch and taste.... It would be a beautiful photo of Maine in October. We decided on our "autumn" vacation from California to be the most sensory gathering place we could imagine.... The pictures of Maine.... Beckoned us to the East Coast. We started out flying into Portland.... From the sky? Autumn was in full glory! We arrived to this beautiful colonial home, the warmth of the candlelit windows and the smell of freshly rain soaked leaves of all the color crayon colors of fall.... Were abound! In the entry way, we met the inn owner who kindly showed us around the breakfast area, and the common room and than took us up the original staircase to our room.... " The Daisy".... Buttery yellow duvets and many pillows to chose from adorned the beds, the wallpaper was gorgeous with blues and yellows, butterflies and daisy's. There was a vanity/wash area outside of the bathroom and the private bathroom was cozy, clean, and had a warming lamp over head. There were plenty of soft, new towels and shampoo, conditioner, body wash etc available. There is coffee, hot chocolate and tea available any time.... I knew I belonged next to the warmth of the "fire" (this is not a down point by any means... a faux fireplace with warmth coming out of it... was heavenly).... I had a hot cup of blueberry tea with cream and honey, a soft reading light, a cozy blanket over my lap.... And for the first time in months... I escaped into a quiet, rainy night bliss. Expectations can let any of us down.... Thus have only the expectation of what you feel is fair enough for a home built in the 19th century. The walls are made of plaster, the floors will creak with the age of old bones.... But... you will feel warm, welcomed....and YES there might be a sweet dog to provide you with some petting therapy. This IS a DOG FRIENDLY home.... When I traveled with my Aussie, Jack.... It was very difficult to find lodging that was "dog friendly"... when your dog is as important and loved enough by you to be considered a piece of your heart, a part of your family? You would hope they would be welcomed to travel with you.... If you do not like dogs, if you are allergic to dogs, if you hate any bit of a dog hair....please do not feel that writing a review about the towels by the door for one to wipe their dogs paws on is an offense.... I smelled zero dogs, I saw no dog hair..... and from experience of past travel with my dog? Believe me... you are caring for this animal as you would YOUR FAMILY member... people who travel with their animals? Take care of them.... There was a beautiful big dog there with his family, he allowed us to pet him, give us "kisses" and I actually cried when I hugged his sweet human family goodbye.... I miss my Jack and know he would have loved this home, all the space to run and play and that when he came inside, I could wipe his paws and he could eat, drink and be warmly welcomed into an actual home instead of a blank hotel room..... where there are extra dog charges and un-kind looks from others who just do not "get it". Thus, I highly commend this inn for loving animals enough to welcome them in as family, just like they do with their guests. This home is clean, the walls... again.... PLASTER... which have withstood the test of time.... Cold winters, rain, snow..... if those 174 year old walls could tell the stories of all the history they saw.... If you are coming to Maine to feel warmth in both heat and in heart? Stay in a bed and breakfast, where the home owner is in love with that home, the history it holds and ensures you are fed, have all the things you would need... and treats you as if you were a part of the family... even though you come "from away" (a term used here in Maine for those who are here on vacation)... you become a piece of the history that continues. The inn owners in Maine, especially the inns not close to a big city like Portland.... Are extremely dedicated to the comfort of their guests.... There is not a grocery store with every single thing you could need for a special recipe.... You have to work hard to keep these very old homes in good shape.... It is a constant job where you have little to no time for rest away from caring for others.... Thank you, with all of our hearts, for welcoming us, feeding us, keeping us warm and helping this very tired nurse from California.... Forget for a few days.... The hustle and bustle of living in LA, working through a pandemic.....and used to constant noise that was not the same as crisp falling leaves, the pitter patter of rain on your candle lit window.... Or special and welcomed therapy of a sweet dog named Carson who had expressive eye brows and a smile that made me miss my Jack who is currently watching us from heaven.... Un wind and enjoy the pause of extremes.... Healing the heart and soul. read more

Recently stayed at the Candlebay Inn and had a great time. Brought my Jack Russell Terrier and stayed in the Daisy Room. Just enough room, very neat and clean with a lot of light and sunshine. Inn had a nice homey feel. Connie was super nice and very accommodating. Breakfast was very good especially the apple french toast with sausage. Inn walking distance to restaurants and shops which was great. It's definitely a place worth checking out. You won't be disappointed. read more

My wife and I booked a few nights Thanksgiving weekend. Connie is a great host. She went out of her way to make us comfortable and feel at home. Everything was very clean and the breakfasts just right. Our Border Collie also felt welcome and at ease with the hosts. A storm hit and returning home in a storm didn't make sense. Connie and her daughter made our decision to stay an extra night easy. We spent the stranded evening sitting in the comfort of the common room surrounded by windows and enjoyed the beauty of the storm. We hope to return next year for the same weekend. Super sweet B&B perfectly located in Freeport. Although the Owner was not available to meet us she left a sweet note with instructions and a key. We stayed in the Clover room very clean and comfortable. Fresh linens and toiletries were provided. Breakfast was delicious we were served fruit salad, toast / English muffin breakfast sausage and a delicious frittata. All amenities were very well thought out and inviting. We walked to the LL Bean stores and the rest of the shopping area was maybe an 8 minute walk at most. read more

Biked in from Portland and this place was perfect. Bayberry room was large enough to fit the bikes and on the first floor. Breakfast was outstanding and it was just a short walk to all of the stores. read more

Wonderful stay @ Candlebay Inn! Clean, homey, and great location. I felt like I was staying with family rather than at a hotel. Connie, the owner, was extremely warm and welcoming upon my arrival. It was just me traveling and I stayed one night in the front room (immediately left when you enter). The breakfast was delicious the next morning - caramel apple french toast casserole, sausage, fruit parfait, juice, coffee, etc. The location is great if you're visiting the LL Bean flagship store. It's barely a 5 minute walk, even at a leisurely pace. This is not a fancy over the top place, but it's definitely a great value and I felt right at home! I recommend booking directly through her website - I had a slight issue w/ Orbitz.com AND they take a percentage of the rate. read more

I spend way too many nights in hotels for work, so when I knew I was going to spend a long weekend for fun in Freeport, I decided to try the Candlebay Inn out. I was not disappointed! Connie, the owner is so friendly and makes you feel that her home is your home. The Inn is very clean and comfortable. There's also a great sitting room that I enjoyed at night to sit and knit. Connie also makes sure that there are goodies to eat and plenty of tea and coffee for the night cap. Candlebay Inn is within a short walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants in Freeport and there's plenty of parking. Gracious, comfortable, and quiet bed and breakfast in the heart of Freeport, a few minutes walk to LL Bean. Our king bed in the Evergreen Room was super comfy. The private bath was huge and had ample amenities. The owner Connie has done a nice job with the decor so you feel you've stepped back in time. Of course the plumbing and electrical are modern. Larry the Lobster-towel was rolled up on the bed. Cute touch. Breakfast was Apple pie French toast, sausage, and fresh orange juice. We were offered seconds but we were both too full already. This is a pet-friendly place. We didn't see or hear any 4-legged guests during our stay. It's close to the restaurants, bars and shopping in Freeport, about 5 minutes walk to the outlets and LL Bean. This is a great bed and breakfast. It was formerly known as the Capt. Briggs house, but changed hands in December, I think. Anyway Connie Lay bought the B&B in December and has made it into a lovely pet friendly B&B. All of the rooms are cozy (I had a peek at them all) and Connie, her daughter Stephanie, and Stephanie's partner,Van Mehanovic have made the Candlebay into a most friendly and pleasant place to stay. My dog Sam and I stayed two nights. There is a big yard where Sam could wander and I could read. The Inn is on a dead end quiet street, but just minutes by foot from Freeport's shops and restaurants. Many of the restaurants have outside areas where you can bring your dog while you eat. This was great for me. The Inn is immaculate, and the breakfasts, cooked by chef Van, are phenomenal. There is always coffee, tea, soda and water available, and in the afternoons there was always a treat available - cake or cookies. I highly recommend it!! read more

Hubby and I had a delightful stay at Candlebay Inn. Very welcoming bed and breakfast within walking distance to LL Bean, shops and restaurants. Right off the main road. Room and premises was very clean, good size, cheerfully decorated and comfortable. Innkeeper was pleasant and served a tasty, warm breakfast in the morning. A relaxing stopover ... we were able to spend some time in Freeport and then continue on our way further North. Would recommend and will visit again. A good diversion on route to either Bangor or Bar Harbor. read more

If you are searching for a place to unwind and not worry about anything, stay here. The innkeeper takes on the concerns for you. She is very resourceful and thoughtful about your room assignment - they all have their own personalities! For dog-friendly - I say five stars. They are very accommodating and breakfast is great and filling. Make sure you mention food restrictions at the booking to be sure you can enjoy it - they will accommodate. I have had 2 stays here in 2018 and 2019 and they are consistently good. It was like returning home. Everything is very closeby - you can walk to the Main Street shops and restaurants. Bring your umbrella just in case - it IS drizzly New England, but that is no fault of the innkeepers. Just roll with it! read more
