The Kendall Inn was a perfect stopover as we journeyed through Maine. The attentive hosts welcomed us and oriented us when we arrived, pointing out the twirling Scrabble board and a large selection of puzzles. As drizzly rain began, hubs settled down at the puzzle table for the evening! Fresh baked cookies are available in the evenings as well, served with cold milk. The rooms are well appointed with updated bathrooms. The Inn is close to anything you might need to get to in Freeport. Breakfast was delicious as well! This inn provides all the cozy things ~ coffee available in the morning, a selection of other coffees and teas available via Keurig at other times. My only complaint is that the bedside lighting in our room isn't sufficient for reading. Mood lighting ~ check. Reading ~ you'll need to use your phone or a flashlight. The Kendall Inn feels cozy and welcoming, like visiting a treasured relative who takes the best of care of you. Our room was clean and comfortable. We loved being able to walk from the inn to restaurants and shops in Freeport. Most appreciated was their thoughtfulness of providing delicious homemade gluten free food to accommodate my allergy. At night we played games in the parlor while enjoying the delicious warm homemade gluten free cookies. In the morning the three course breakfast was really delicious, especially the gluten free banana scones with maple. I highly recommend staying at the Kendall Inn. read more

My husband and I stayed at this B&B on our anniversary trip back in November when the new owners first took over. While they were friendly and we generally liked our stay, there were a few things that were alarming. One evening as we sat downstairs in the dining room, I saw a mouse scurry across the floor. Then, at breakfast time, I found a hair in my food. I let the owners know but tried to be understanding since they were so new to running the inn. After we checked out, we noticed that our credit card was not charged, so we thought they had comped the room as a courtesy due to our complaints. Last week, we received a credit card charge from the inn. Considering that it has been six months since our stay, I called the owner and complained. He explained that the lack of charge had been an oversight. I consider it to be a very poor business practice to charge your customer six months later! Honestly, they should have borne the cost of their mistake. If you choose to stay here, be prepared for rodents, hair in your food, and surprise credit card charges months later! read more

We have stayed in many B&B's across New England. KTI is good, but there is absolutely no way I could give this inn any more than 3 stars. Mark is a great host. He is friendly and wonderful to talk with. His personality alone is one of the inn's positive assets. The other big positive is location - this inn is a pleasant 1/2 mile walk to the center of Freeport. The building is old so most of the rooms in the inn itself are smaller - especially the bathrooms. We liked that, but some may find it a bit quirky. We found the inn to be very comfortable and it definitely had a nice homey feel in the public spaces. My main issue with this inn involved the housekeeping - or lack of it. When we arrived, the bathroom had one bath towel. I had to scrounge for a 2nd one since we were clearly a couple. They also do not provide shampoo or conditioner. I actually asked and was told that they provide a bar soap that also doubles as a shampoo. Yes, I then checked and the bar did clearly say that on the wrapper but I'm sorry, if I'm dishing out over $800 on a multi-night stay I am not washing my hair with a bar of soap. We had to buy our own at CVS. In terms of daily housekeeping, there isn't any. During our 3 night stay they didn't enter the room. No towel change. No TP check (I had to find it myself). No trash removal. Again, for $800 I don't expect to have to ask for a basic housekeeping visit - especially for TP. If you stay for one night, you would never notice this, but if you stay 3 or more nights this issue is difficult to ignore. The room was acceptable. We chose our room because it had a daybed, but when we arrived we noticed there wasn't one. We thought we made a mistake, but then checked the website while staying there and our room definitely indicated a daybed (even showed a photo of it). So be advised that the rooms may not match the description. Our room was on the parking lot side of the building on the top floor. At night any car that drove in lit up our room. I noticed this all 3 nights. Darkening shades or even drapes would have helped. Just a note for the new innkeepers to consider. But overall, we liked the room. Also, be advised that there is no cable or satellite TV. The in-room TV gets a handful of local Maine stations but primarily relies on a streaming option only (Roku) that you must log into yourself with your own subscription. So if you don't have a streaming subscription, don't expect much in terms of TV. Many B&B's don't offer in-room TVs. If you aren't going to provide a usable TV option, then it might be better to simply not provide one. Just something for other guests to be aware of. The website indicated that cookies are provided daily. There were some when we were there, but they really were not restocked and the final day had no cookies whatsoever. So don't get your hopes up on those either. Something else the new innkeepers should emphasize again since it would have been a nice touch. Breakfast was acceptable. It was prompt and service was great and the breakfast area is a nice part of the inn. Natalie (housekeeper and server) was a highlight of our stay and I very much hope that the new innkeepers retain her. By midway through our stay, we both had the distinct impression that the innkeepers had checked out of this business. Most of our stay they were noticeably absent (and we actually never were introduced to Nancy despite seeing here briefly twice). At our first breakfast, Mark happened to make an off-hand statement about the inn having been for sale last year. That made me wonder, so I checked online later that day and easily discovered that the inn was recently sold in August 2023. So the innkeepers are clearly on their way out. Had I known that, I probably would have thought twice about booking here. I don't begrudge the innkeepers for checking out since I imagine running an inn is tiring, but this most definitely explained almost all of our issues with our stay. That little extra effort to ensure a repeat stay is simply gone. We probably won't visit again until after the next innkeepers fully take over. At that point, we may give this inn another chance. Based on past reviews, this inn clearly had been very good when the innkeepers were trying and we really did like the building and the location. With a little effort this inn would clearly be great once again, and I fully expect that new owners will bring back that effort once they take it fully over. read more

We arrived early, and decided to see if we could set an early check-in. To our delight, owner Mark came down and was able to check us in immediately. The room was lovely, clean,and quintessentially Maine. We had notified the Innkeepers, Mark and Nancy, of several food allergies. The food was absolutely scrumptious, and the one "replacement " meal Nancy gave me was the tastiest breakfast offering I've ever had. The Inn is the perfect spot to use as a base for day trips along the coast. We couldn't have had a better experience and plan to return. read more

A truly lovely place, friendly owners and delicious food. We stayed July 4th weekend for 2 nights. Mark and Nancy were super friendly and made sure we felt right at home immediately. The room was small but well appointed and clean. They offer a small refrigerator with cold water and allow you to keep small items in there. Ice, tea, fresh cookies and some candy are lovely amenities you don't find everywhere. Mark made sure we got to know a little bit about the other guests so we would feel more comfortable talking to each other. Mark's wickedly droll humor had us all laughing. Nancy made sure to accommodate my dietary requirements (gluten free) and everything was fresh and tasty. We will definitely go back some day so we can visit Frank. Me and my girlfriend wanted to plan a trip to Portland and came across this bed and breakfast after hotel costs in the area were running about the same. Little did we know that this would be one of the best places we have ever stayed at. Upon arrival Mark was willing to greet us 2 hours prior to "check in" where he gave us a quick tour of the grounds, and showed us to our room, the Danvers Room. He also was able to give us recommendations of places to eat and head to in the city which is only 5 minutes down the road to plan our day. The room was cute, comfy, and clean with it's own separate bathroom, away from everyone in the back of the house which made for awesome peace and quiet. The room had an AC which helped due to the summer warm temperature, and included a TV with a built in DVD player (yes, there are movies to pick from in the living room), and also a Roku upon request, which was great to catch up on shows we were watching. The house also has super fast Wi-Fi to use your own personal devices as well. Breakfast each morning is at 8 AM but is totally worth waking up for. Nancy cooks everything from scratch and her menu items during our visit did not disappoint. Mark also makes sure that you have anything you need such as some fresh coffee, tea, juice, or water. One other plus was having fresh fruit directly from their garden such as fresh strawberries. The outside has some beautiful sitting areas that we took advantage of during the day and during some rain that passed by the area. During the day there is always water, ice, coffee, tea, and some desserts to have directly in the living room. Mark was also nice enough to allow us to borrow some chairs to watch a movie outside down the road at LL Bean. Overall, we had a great experience. Both Mark and Nancy are amazing Innkeepers. If your looking for a quiet and comfy place to stay, then this is the place to stay. We will be booking here again on our next Maine vacation. read more

There's relaxing indoor and outdoor space to hang out in between whatever adventures you are in Freeport to find. A short walk from the center of Freeport, this place is the perfect launching pad to this part of Maine. If you are shop-til-you-drop folks, it's perfect. We're not. We spend less than two hours in the shops. From there, we spent one day in Wolfe's Neck State park and one at the Shaker Village in New Gloucester and the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. read more

Our stay at the Kendall Tavern in was superb. It was our first experience at a B&B and it won't be our last. I'd only seen bed and breakfasts on Gilmore Girls I think and Borat. I know! And so I didn't know what to expect. I was heading to Maine for a wedding and I researched several B&Bs before choosing this one. Before I visited: I called and spoke with Nancy. I felt like was talking to an aunt in Maine. She was so welcoming and friendly. She told me all about Maine and activities to look forward to. I remember calling my boyfriend and telling him how wonderful my conversation was. Visit: Mark is awesome! He's full of entertainment. The rooms are so cute and cozy. They are super clean and well kept. The food is delicious too. There isn't a selection of items but the food is so good. It definitely forced us to step out and try something new and it was totally worth it. Our dealings were very honest - no hidden fees. The other guests were friendly too. It was like staying at a relatives home - where you actually enjoy it! Any room is great we chose the one with the blue bedding. Honestly, I had more hospitality here than I've had at 5 star resorts. The town is really cute too. There isn't much but what they have there is really cute. It's also only 20 minutes from downtown Portland and loads of other locations. Definitely worth the money!!! Mark and Nancy are wonderful and warm innkeepers! Mark will greet you as an old friend and will make you feel right at home. He runs the inn, takes care of guests, and relates to anout everyone. Nancy is the chef and gourmet cook, behind the scenes, and keeps everything in order. About a half mile walk into town, on sidewalks, no traffic or congestion this way. Also, no noise from the center of town! Perfect location, great cookies, and gourmet breakfasts! Lots of hiking in the area, 24 hour brand new laundromat close by, and gym the next town over. This was my first bed and breakfast experience and it did not disappoint! Mark communicated well before arrival and greeted us promptly. He did a run through of the grounds, etc and showed us the beverages and fresh baked cookies that were available. My friend and I stayed in the "Boston" room and it was adorable. Everything was so clean and well thought out. The beds were very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was at 8 and there was everything you could imagine ...coffee, orange juice, delicious homemade biscuits, sausage. Mark and Nancy are a fantastic couple and gracious hosts. We just loved the Kendall Tavern. There is something very calming and peaceful about this place. Tim was very accommodating and makes you feel like you are visiting an old friend. He even whipped up some scrambled eggs for us to go when we had to leave before breakfast was officially served, complete with juice and fruit. I stayed here last weekend with my girlfriend and I have to say it was a very pleasant first experience with a bed and breakfast. The owners Mark and Nancy are very nice people who were welcoming from the moment we checked in. Nancy does all the cooking in the mornings and her breakfasts are amazing I never had any "leftovers". Mark is always ready with some fresh made coffee in the mornings at 7am and is always upbeat and friendly sparking some good conversation and really providing helpful details on the town and sites to see. The rooms are clean with private bathrooms and the wifi is very fast (allowed us to watch the last episode of season 7 game of thrones !). The house is very close to town (5min walk) and Mark does a good job of providing good recommendations of restaurants or nearby stores to check out. When we needed some extra ice for our cooler he was happy to provide us some. Overall, very nice people and top notch experience I will definitely be recommending the Kendall Tavern Inn to my family and friends. read more

Stayed there last Saturday night and had a marvelous experience: quiet room, delicious breakfast, absolutely lovely house. If I had the money I would beg them to sell me the whole inn. But what makes it all work are the proprietors themselves, who clearly take their roles as innkeepers seriously, attending not just to the needs of their guests but also to the house itself, which could not ask for better custodians. Our stay at this B&B really made our vacation. The rooms are cozy, clean, and comfortable, each with it's own private bath. The front porch of the inn is great for just sitting outside and enjoying the weather. The Inn itself is within walking distance to downtown Freeport, so it was great to shop without having to worry about parking. Mark and Nancy are perfect innkeepers. They recommended great restaurants (Freeport Grille was great!) and gave us good tips for other things to do in the area. Nancy's breakfasts are to die for, and each afternoon there are fresh baked goods in the living room. Mark went above and beyond by cooking me a special breakfast at 6am the morning of my race. My husband and I haven't stayed in many B&Bs and our previous experiences have only been so-so. We really enjoyed our overnight at the Kendall Tavern and Nancy and Mark made great hosts. When they told us over the phone they could accommodate a gluten free diet we were expecting they would just omit anything with wheat from their already planned menu(especially since this was a last minute trip and we made our reservations with less than 24 hours notice). We were very pleasantly surprised with the gluten free treats Nancy made for us. The peanut butter chocolate chip cookies were amazing! I never would have guessed they were GF. I've been trying to replicate them to no avail. The GF cranberry muffins and coffee cake at breakfast were also delicious and a nice surprise. I wish we could have stayed another night just for the food alone! It's difficult to travel and eat out when you have food allergies, so this extra special touch went a long way for us. We were also very happy that Nancy and Mark had no problem with us bringing our 4 month old baby along. Another B&B in the same area did not seem as happy about that when we called to inquire about rates. read more

This was our first B&B experience so I can safely say that Mark and Nancy set the bar VERY high for us to compare anybody else close to them. We are expats living in Saudi Arabia and had just endured a 24 hour journey of taxis and airplanes when we arrived for our stay at Kendall Tavern; needless to say, we were exhausted. About 1 minute before we arrived, a storm blew through and knocked a transformer out so the Inn was without power. We no sooner walked in than Mark and Nancy introduced themselves and handed us flash lights. They addressed each of us by name and introduced us to the guests gathered in the living room. It turned out to be a bit of an unplanned social hour that gave us the chance to meet and visit with some of the other guests at the Inn. We have 11 year old twins who were greeted with freshly baked, homemade, chocolate chip cookies. Our room was big enough to accommodate all four of us and was extremely comfortable. Nancy prepared an amazing breakfast every morning of our stay and took in to consideration that we had 2 picky eaters in our party and made something special for them. A special touch added by Mark was at breakfast; while getting coffee or whatever else a guest may need, he introduced those who arrived the previous night, to the other guests and shared a little bit of their story. This was a great conversation starter. We could have spent our entire vacation right there at the Inn and would have been quite happy about it. We love that it is a family friendly Inn as most places won't accommodate children. In fact, we loved everything about the Inn. When and if we ever get back to Maine, I know where we will be staying. read more
