This is really a 3.5 star review but since Yelp doesn't let you do halves, I'll round up. The Good: :: it's a local business! :: the 2 guys who run the place were super friendly :: location is terrific. close to lots of restaurants, coffeeshops, bars, main tourist destinations/areas, etc :: MODERN DECOR. this is huge. why? because most beds and breakfasts look like someone puked out grandma's linens, bedding, and curtains all over the place. LOVE the modern look and feel. :: very clean :: NOT HAUNTED. this is a huge bonus for me. seriously. :: cute snacks (like seaweed snacks) and beverages (like tea) available upstairs every day :: breakfast made every day from locally sourced ingredients as much as possible, like fresh yogurt, etc :: big spacious shared livingroom space upstairs :: bed was very comfy The Bad: :: the process to checkout wasn't super clear. that should have been on the room guide. :: parking is a bit of a clusterfuck. because there's such limited parking, they have to play parking jenga if your car is sandwiched between other cars in the driveway. :\ they only move cars around til i think midnight, so if you are needing your car for some reason outside of their availability window, you are actually SOL because you don't have access to the other cars' keys to move them so you can get out. :: main kitchen table isn't open 24-7. i'm not asking for there to be food 24-7, i'm asking for the main dining area to be open and available for use, like for drawing on, using a laptop or ipad on, etc. my room was the tiniest and had no desk, so it was kind of sucky not to have that table to use when i needed a table. :\ :: lighting in my room was super dim and inadequate. there were only 2 tiny bedside lights that were LED and didn't emit enough light for easy reading. mind you, lighting in the other rooms may have been fine but in this tiny room, it was definitely lacking. :( :: breakfast got monotonous after a while. there was never bacon or sausage, it was usually yogurt and some form of eggs like in quiche form :: there was a microwave for use but it was a tiny portable one The Ugly: :: none Would I go back? Probably so. Finding a cute, affordable, and modern bed and breakfast in a popular destination like Portland, Maine is a huge win. However, next time I think I'll try to book a bigger room and hopefully things will be a little bit better. This place is IN.

This is not your grandma's bed and breakfast. If you like some modern chic with your Victorian charm, then book yourself a stay at the Mercury Inn. It is located in the lovely Parkside neighborhood and only a stone's throw from an eclectic variety of Portland spots. Self check-in was easy peasy. Tim texted me well before the regular check-in time that our room was ready. We entered using the provided pass code and our key was waiting patiently for us. Parking in their driveway is an option, but it's not absolutely necessary. Street parking was ample and painless. We stayed in Room III on the second floor. While not the most spacious room, every inch of space was efficiently utilized and it had everything we needed, right down to a wine bottle opener. (The bathroom was plenty big though.) The mattress and bedding were blissfully comfy and a sloth's delight. The second floor is also home to the artfully furnished and decorated common room. It was great to pop in for a coffee or a snack, a guidebook, even a DVD or two. There is also a handy refrigerator tucked away by the rear emergency exit. Tim's locally sourced, buffet-style breakfasts were a real treat. We feasted on frittata, grits, roasted root veggies, hearty bread and jam, scones, muffins, and heavenly yogurt with maple syrup and granola. The cider was spectacular. Tim himself hung out in the dining area every morning and greeted everyone. He was a pleasure to chat with and had some great recommendations. (We unfortunately never got to meet Jake.) Mercury Inn is a standout in a city full of creative and ambitious ventures. They succeed at both providing a hospitable stay for guests and incorporating local vendors and sustainable practices into the overall experience. On top of all that, their prices are unbeatable, even during the on-season. It was the perfect home base for our Portland adventure.

This place is amazing. The food, the energy, the inn keepers. Our whole experience was welcoming and relaxing. Highly recommended.

It isn't super close to Old Port, but it's about a 20-25 minute walk, even faster if you have a car or bike. Our host, David, was so gracious and kind. He gave us all kinds of tips on where to eat, what to see, and which neighborhoods to check out. And the breakfast options. Holy moly. These are some of the things David made: lobster souffle; turkey bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast puff pastry; raspberry custard; pancakes with wild blueberry compote; lobster home fries. Honestly, some of our best meals in Portland were eaten right in this very B&B. He even puts snacks in the second floor lounge area (there's also tea and chips) every day, and on an especially hot day he put out a pitcher of pink lemonade. It seems like almost all the cooking and cleaning is done by him. I'm not sure how he manages it and yet everything is flawless, but there you go. Reserve your room early because it was booked solid the whole time we were there. Totally worth it.

The bed was very comfortable with an assortment of different pillow types. I brought mine but left them in the car and my knees said nevermind then. Newly updated this room was so comfortable (loved the gas fireplace). The Inn owners Dale and Misael are very genuine, outgoing, informative and very knowledgeable about the history and places to eat in Portland... steered us to great venues. Continental breakfast was good and we loved the set up of the dining area and having access to snacks 24/7. Thank you for the great ambiance and hospitality. We plan on returning! (2024 Visit, still a wonderful establishment in a perfect location in Portland) (2025 Visit, exceptional as always!) P.s. (2018) We found our room, next to the front entrance, to be quite acceptable. We were a little worried by some of the reviews, but we've had far noisier experiences in those typical long huge hotel hall ways with the throngs of people walking through, getting ice and elevators. Street noise nothing. Even if the windows had been open the noise was just normal. Unless you need to bed yourself in a complete vacuum don't let the negatives count this room out.

The eccentric, quaint, vibes from this adorable little hotel are so true to Portland as a whole!…read moreThis Inn is a complete feast for the eyes the moment you enter! Considering how long this building has been standing, I'm amazed with how well everything looked overall! Beyond the exciting aesthetics, I can't even put into words how amazing and kind the staff were! Nicolette and Danielle were incredibly accommodating and pleasant. They helped with our bags the moment we walked in, showed us right to our room, made sure we had everything we were looking for and were still so chipper when I went down stairs to ask some additional stuff! The mini breakfast smoothie I had with granola on top the first morning I was there...... SO DELICIOUS, especially with the coffee they had available. The morning after they had the perfect portion of pancakes that were delicious, along with a cucumber and grape salad with a yogurt poppyseed dressing! As someone that doesn't often go outside of my normal food comfort zones, it was SO worth the try and I didn't even need to leave my hotel! Other than the whole room being beautifully hand painted, the bedroom and bathroom were extremely clean! The bed was ginormous and had the cutest stepping stool to get into it along with just being plain ol' comfy. The robes they have for you in the closet are so nice after you're out of the shower and have nothin else to do but lounge! If you want to lounge in your normal clothes there are SEVERAL adorable places in the Inn to do so! Long story short, this Inn is so worth a visit if you appreciate eclectic art that keeps your eyes busy for hours, cute reading nooks by windows looking out into Portland, a warm fire to wake up to and smiling faces all around!

Don't get me wrong; the smell of cooked goodies in the background and the 1,500 piece puzzle slapped in front of the roaring gas fireplace are thoughtful touches. But the lengthy explanation when you register of how to avoid a $15 parking ticket (in place of "free parking") and the over $300/night price, are rather off putting. Please explain how this 8+ bedroom older than god residence finds itself listed as a hotel on sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com. I'm discovering this more and more alarming as you travel through New England. Little startup investors bill themselves as hotels when all they seem to be are old homes with a bunch of beds and $$ signs in someone's eyes. The Pomegranate Inn is the latest in the line of promised romance and failed expectation. My recommendation? Check in at the local Holiday Inn instead.
