Absolutely wonderful! Nice quiet residential neighborhood, just a few minutes walk to Congress Street and downtown. Beautiful 1871 house, and our room and bath were thoughtfully updated to contemporary convenience, with clean lines, but with many also older period details and furnishings intact. Breakfast was terrific--a choice of blueberry pancakes or spinach & feta scramble, with FRESH fruit & salad on the side--not a carb-fest nominal offering. My husband and I were passing thru Portland, ME to Bar Harbor. We stayed at West End Inn for one night and it was a wonderful stay. It seems that reviews from 2011/2012 were less than pleasant for some, but I must say that our experience with this charming B&B was just wonderful! Agreed with previous review on the delicious breakfast. We didn't experience any seating issue. Menu was already laid out on table. Coffee, tea, pastries, etc were laid out on side table - so we didn't have to wait to get started. Innkeeper Scott is in the kitchen cooking, while Deb is in the front taking orders, greeting guests, answering questions on directions, POIs, etc. I'm a regular detox juice drinker, and they are the first B&B/Inn/Hotel establishment I've been to that offered the juice!!! (The REAL juice - not one of those watered down sugar added crap!). This was a big + for me. Problem with most hotel bookings is that the professional pics posted on the website always looks better than reality. This is not the case with WEI. The pics were pretty, the room and house is even more charming to see in person. Beddings are very comfortable and bathroom is clean. I stayed in room 6, it was spacious considering an old restored historic house, but that's part of the B&B charm! (if you are looking for a 700 Sq ft shoebox with modern but unmemorable furniture, just go book a hotel instead.) All in all a wonderful experience for my husband and I. What an off the charts charming, beautiful, hip but cozy, comfortable, warm and welcoming Inn! Loads of old world charm, but nothing about this place feels hokey or dated... It's been renovated in a way that makes it sophisticated and charming at the same time. Having just moved from Los Angeles to Portland, how fortunate we are to have this special place around the corner from us so that when we have lots of visitors from Southern California they'll have a home away from home staying at this delightful spot! Having arrived with our moving van to find that our renovation was farther from completion than we had realized, Ashley and Diane were willing to have us stay, even though breakfast was not up and running. This is an exceptional inn - fabulous breakfast, great linens, a beautiful comfortable four-poster bed, far exceeded my expectations. But i was particularly wowed by the staff. They know everything you need to know about Portland and will take the time to tell you ... where to eat, where to go, where to walk to see the city... This B&B was very clean and comfortable. It is a 10-minute walk to Congress St, where you'll find several restaurants and shops and a 40-minute walk to Eastern Promenade, where we saw the July 4th fireworks. Breakfast each morning was delicious with organic and fresh coffee, fruits, blueberry pancakes and bacon. We stayed in room 1, which had a queen-sized bed, a private balcony and decent-sized bathroom. The innkeeper was accommodating and gave us great tips on where to go. read more

I love this place. Tucked into a neighborhood just west of downtown Portland, West End Inn is the perfect place if you are looking for something outside of town and less touristy. Feels like a hip residential area and a couple of blocks from Congress St. where there are lots of restaurants and solid nightlife. All six rooms are decorated tastefully. I've stayed in two of them and they both had the same feel. Breakfast is organic and tasty. Another can't go wrong in my book. read more

Be aware that this Inn charges a cancelation fee even if you cancel well in advance of their 14-day required cancelation policy. We had to cancel our trip as Maine is a closed State due to COVID. We were traveling over 3 states on our trip and could not meet the requirements to have testing completed within 72 hours or entering each State. Rest assured when we do reschedule, it will not be at this Inn. They are the ONLY establishment hotel, airline, or rental car scheduled over our 12-day planned trip that charged a fee to cancel within the guidelines. They will not have the opportunity for me to give them a good review in the future! read more

I cannot speak highly enough of this bed and breakfast. It felt like a five star hotel. Beautiful house built in 1871. Recently remodeled. The innkeeper was wonderful and very helpful. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully plated. I really felt like it was part of the Portland foodie experience. They have about 7 kinds of wine where you can buy a glass of wine at any time. There is also beer. Coffee and tea are also available and included. It is a quick walk to town. The inn also supports the Portland art museum. It is a gem of a museum within walking distance. My husband and I were blown away by the collection. Beautiful pictures from many of the worlds most famous artists. Can't wait to return to this B and B. Highly recommending to my family and friends. This place was fantastic! My partner and I came up from Florida over the holidays. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and hospitable. Their complimentary breakfast is beyond good! Huge fan of their Blueberry Pancakes and the Omelette freaking delicious! Our room was immaculate! The owners are way too kind. They were full of recommendations, tips and more. It was also sweet of them to let us borrow their shovel when we needed to leave (it snowed our last night). Our only trouble was trying to find a sweet spot on the shower (either it was too hot or ice cold). This took some getting used to, but I think we made it work! All you really need to know, if you are going to Portland, Maine, is "stay here." ps, you can ignore all the reviews from 2011 and earlier, apparently it's been redone since then. West End Inn is a beautifully detailed, clean, comfortable, homelike b&b. charm all the way. fireplace in the living room, couches you'll want to sit on, lots of light. heading back there after a day's adventures felt a lot like returning home, maybe because you get a key so you can come and go as you please. service was excellent, they offered lots of helpful ideas -- we were new to the city -- good knowledge about where things were, how to get there, what the deal was with all the places like which coffee roaster to try, how are they different, upscale vs downscale, etc. not the typical useless 'olive garden' info at all. i admit i was a little worried going in since i tend to attract weird people when i'm in new places (some sort of twisted pied piper gene i think), but there was none of that. the other guests we only saw at breakfast and all were respectful, and the hosts had an extremely light touch yet were always at the ready with treats, info, suggestions, help, whatever. the interactions couldn't have gone better. what you get here is the "inn" vibe that you won't get at a corporate hotel. homey is the word, i guess -- it's about scale, smallness, simplicity, hospitality, personalization, comfort, being intelligently humane. you really can't beat it when it's done well, and it's done very well here. Room: there are six rooms in total, of varying sizes, 4 queens and 2 kings. we got the big blue king on the top/third floor. there were only two rooms up there. obviously it's a very old house (100 years, probably more), and the staircase was narrow and a little creaky but well carpeted. wonderful. everything is fully renovated, thick carpet, wifi, flatscreen, and especially a skylight which was killer, since we could lower the shade for privacy and still have a warm indirect daylight fill the room. lots of extra space in the room with little tables, big chairs, a dresser, lamps, double bath sink, standard tub & shower with a window in the bath too. the bedroom view overlooked the street and trees, our first afternoon we sat in bed and watched a two-hour blizzard with snowflakes the size of golf balls. it's quiet. the bed was firm, it's a four-poster (i think you have to bring your own handcuffs and chains), and it's kind of high, good for a six-footer like myself so maybe the idea is if you get a king, you're expected to have someone else there to hoist you up. clean, crisp, odor-free, lovely colors. Breakfast: morning breakfasts in the living room/dining room were part of the package -- cooked to order! real quality food and great choices: omelettes, meats, pancakes, oatmeal, maine maple syrup, you choose from 4 mains plus a little starter - either a juicer juice or the apple crisp which is a must-have, overall it was as good and probably better than any bistro you might find on the outside, fine fine fine, no skimping on anything. at the same time there's also a continental breakfast on the open counter for the granola, yogurt, coffee, juice, etc. a lot of care goes into this, that's easy to see. Location: West End Inn is in portland's west end, a seemingly up and coming part of town starting to hit its stride. a ten minute walk from the inn gets you to the big thoroughfare known as Congress Street where it intersects with Longfellow Square, a center of activity sort of like where Houston and LaGuardia meet. all kinds of restaurants, cafes, bars, music venues, community centers, thrift shops and a herd of bowery-type bums. but coming from nyc it was more colorful than bother - the annoying people are down here, not there. we can handle winos! it's a great walker's city since it's flat, small and full of good stuff. the feeling of history is everywhere. the best comparable to the west end might be a mini version of a san francisco neighborhood like noe valley without the hills. small tree-lined streets, very very old beautifully maintained homes, fantastic architecture. a lot of red brick everywhere, shingled roofs. lots of detailing. the main difference from sf might be that the colors are more muted, earthy, befitting the northeast and its climate and curmudgeonly character. portland is a seaport first and foremost, and the town is dominated by the coast. there are seagulls crying out all over the city. crows too. the city has a fantastic soundtrack. walking around the west end even in 20 degrees was strangely uplifting. lots of dogwalkers, just a few cars, no commerciality. since this is yelp, there must be this caveat: the "Tiffany" people who get bent out of shape by the brand of soap or the thickness of the pile of the bathrobe may not get this type of place. i'd suggest you stick to the Regency and let the rest of us enjoy it here. read more

I just had a great stay at the West End Inn. This was my first stay at a bed and breakfast so I didn't know what to expect. We arrived very late and had made prior arrangements to obtain a key. Our room was Room 1 located on the first floor. After trying to tip toe across the creaky floors in this old, beautiful house, we entered our room. I was immediately struck by the homey feeling of the place. The room was cozy with a comfy bed. We had our own patio which I used daily to get some fresh air. Our room was located in a higher traffic area (first floor, by the sitting room). While we had a extra hallway separating us from the main room, I still felt a little lack of privacy. I had to make sure to keep my voice low (I have a loud voice) and keep the bedroom activities to a quiet minimum...ahem...moving on. The B&B is in the middle of a neighborhood, so don't expect to surrounded by businesses and tourist attractions. You are just a short walk from a lot of cute West End dining destinations that were quite impressive. The hostesses were very accommodating and served a nice breakfast every morning. They even cut out the carbs for me at my request. Every afternoon at 3pm some light music is turned on and freshly baked snacks are set out. I used their free wi-fi to work every day and didn't encounter any issues with that. All in all, I think West End Inn is a great place to stay. I would stay there again any time! read more

Business is for sale (Portland Magazine) which may explain why, a no doubt once beautiful, property is falling into some disrepair - as owners may not want to put money into it. Some living room furniture was soiled. Paint was chipping in bathroom and towels were skimpy. King bed somewhat lumpy; and the pillows, well.. Our corner room (Room 5) had window(s?) on only one side - though it faced the street - the room seem dark. TV was old 13" tube style "Puh-leez!" Convenient to downtown. Two parking spaces and street parking rules a minor inconvenience. We were expecting 'just a little' more luxury. read more

Stayed here for a few days in early August to attend a good friend's bachelor party. For the most part, all I have to say about this place are great things. The only downside is if you want to walk, the Old Port area is a good 20-30 minute walk. Other than that, we had the main room downstairs behind the fireplace. Nice room, great bed, and mediocre water pressure. If your companion has long hair (or you sport the Kid Rock look) you might want to ask for another room. Our room also had a private patio which we used for late night cocktails. The food was great, either the morning breakfast feast or afternoon tea and cookies were spot on. I would recommend this place for virtually anyone other than the travelsnoots who are too demanding for their own good. read more

Like a couple other reviewers here, I stayed in Room 1 this past weekend. The room was great: very cozy, private bathroom down a little hallway, and a private deck. The deck was the reason I reserved this particular room, and was well worth it. Morning coffee on these crisp September mornings is even better outside! The bed was quite comfy with plenty of blankets. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Very friendly. The only complaint I have is that the food wasn't as good as I had hoped. Of the two breakfasts we ate there, the potatoes were a little underdone, the quiche was cold, the waffles were smooshy, and we only got half a sausage each. Portions were smaller than I would have liked, too, although I've noticed this at a lot of other B&Bs. I like big breakfasts! Overall though, I would definitely recommend this place. The location is great. A very Maine-y neighborhood only a 20 minute walk (or less, depending on your destination) to where all the action is. I recall how exquisitely warm the Inn felt when we arrived and how gracious and welcoming Victoria, the new owner, was. Throughout the weekend, each return from our forays in and around Portland always evoked the same magical feeling of warmth and comfort....like returning home. Such an amazing place. We were in Maine for our 1 years wedding anniversary. The morning of our anniversary, they brought us sparkling apple cider in champagne glasses. It was such a cool thing that you will not get most places. The cooked to order breakfast is SO good. It is a little bit of a walk down to the downtown area (about 20 minutes), but it is a safe area. We were there in late June. Our biggest complaint, and the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5, was the sun pouring into the room (Room #2) at 4:30am. It was pretty hard, actually next to impossible, to sleep after 5:00am. They could really use some blackout drapes in the rom. I'm gonna start this review out with one statement...best breakfast I've ever had in my entire life! I've only stayed in a B&B one other time in my life and this place blew away my previous experience. Scott and Deb were extremely welcoming and accommodating. They helped us pick out good sites to see, places to eat, and beers to drink. They clearly know their city well. The whole house is extremely clean and beautifully decorated. We stayed in Room 1 which had an extremely comfortable bed, private bathroom, and private balcony which we drank and ate cheese on. The neighborhood is nice, quiet, and only a 10 minute walk from the main part of town. The price we payed to stay here was extremely reasonable, almost too good to be true, and our expectations were exceeded upon visiting. I must reiterate how incredible the breakfast was! Whether you get the wild blueberry pancakes or waffles, asparagus omelet, or frittata I guarantee you will be blown away! The coffee was delicious as well and they carry my favorite tea! My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the West End Inn. Victoria, the Innkeeper, was lovely and couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Although she is a relatively new owner of the Inn, all of the past positive reviews still ring true. The Inn was beautifully designed, spotlessly clean and really cozy with all the amenities you could want. Not to mention that it's in a great location. We like to walk a lot and the Inn was only about a 15-20 minute walk from the Old Port area and only a few minutes from all the great restaurants and shops on Congress street in the West End. When we arrived, we weren't sure where to park because of some restrictions due to the snow, however, Victoria provided us with a map of exactly which streets would have available parking just a couple of blocks away. While we didn't partake in breakfasts because we had already made brunch plans, we did indulge (nightly) in the delicious homemade cookies that were available each day in the dining room and also couldn't resist taking a couple of homemade blueberry muffins "to go" on our way to brunch. Yum! We stayed in room 6 which was spacious with two chairs and a very comfortable bed and nice private bathroom and shower. We couldn't figure out how to adjust the heat our first night as it was unseasonably warm outside, however, when we mentioned this to Victoria the next morning, she didn't hesitate to take care of it and the next night was a perfect temperature. I would happily stay at the West End Inn again and appreciate all the thought and attention that Victoria has put into ensuring that her guests have a fantastic stay. read more

My husband and I just got home from a wonderful two-night stay at the West End Inn for our first wedding anniversary. We've stayed in a handful of Airbnb's over the last few years, but this was our first time at a traditional bed and breakfast. We had the best time! Victoria was so helpful through the entire process and made us feel right at home. We got up to Portland later than expected, and she gave detailed directions on how to park, access the building, and get up to our room. The homemade cookies upon arrival were a life-saver, too, since we were starving! The Inn itself is so beautiful and charming. We loved all the character and unique touches throughout the building. Our room, #5, was clean and cozy with a large bathroom and comfy bed. We slept well, for sure! And can I talk about the breakfast for a minute? To die for. We both had an egg scramble with bacon the first morning, and then I got the coconut banana pancakes on the second. If these are available during your stay, get them!! The cherry torte was also amazing. Impeccable service too, and so friendly. A great way to start the morning. Although we've visited Portland a number of times, this was our first time getting to explore the West End. It's a bit quieter and more residential than downtown/Old Port, but it's lovely. The Inn is about a 20-25 minute walk to Old Port -- perfect for a post-breakfast or dinner stroll. Thank you again, West End Inn, for making our anniversary so special. We stayed here recently for 2 nights in two different rooms (i waited a bit too long to book) The house is a super lovely corner brick townhouse and the common rooms have a cool design scheme - sort of like a slightly funky, classic upper crusty american style that was not too stuffy. The guy who greeted us on the first night was super enthusiastic and warm and suggested places to eat dinner and stuff - we arrived a bit later than the usual check-in time so the owners weren't there. I noticed there were cookies and brownies on the big table in the dining room and I helped myself and they were delish! The next morning, we showed up to breakfast a bit late (like 8:30 - bfast is 8-9) and discovered that there are not quite enough places for everyone to sit at one time..which I find a bit astonishing. There will always be one couple who will have to wait for someone to finish breakfast so that they can sit down - so get to breakfast early! lol I also found the service at breakfast to be a bit clunky. You sit down at a table, then you wait around for someone to give you a menu for like 10 min, then they come around 10 min later to ask what you want (there are only 2 choices)...its all a bit precious and irritating. Like why not just have the menus at the tables already? why not just have the fruit (the first course) waiting at the tables? If you wake up hungry, this is maybe not the best place for you. The 2 breakfasts we had were pretty delicious I will say, but I preferred the buffet-style breakfast set-up we experienced at another b&b where you don't have to wait around forever for your food and there was more variety as well. At the first breakfast, I went to get some water from the water cooler and saw a woman sitting at the computer in the hall. I said good morning and she gave me a confused look and also said good morning. I soon found out that this was the innkeep and it seemed weird to me that she would not introduce herself and instead act pretty awkwardly..but whatever. In general we didn't find the owners to be so warm - sort of like they were trying to be but it came off as forced and uncomfortable/nosy. The second room we stayed in had a jacuzzi, but I really don't think it worked and I noticed that the jets didn't seem super clean. I feel like its a bit shoddy to have a broken jacuzzi in a proper inn - like remove it or get it fixed probably. All in all it was a cute place to stay, but more awkwardness than I would have expected. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed at West End Inn for a long Portland weekend, and this beautiful B&B far exceeded our expectations. It's situated in the beautiful and quiet West End neighborhood, yet within walking distance of all of the highlights in Portland. We parked our car when we arrived and didn't have to get in it again until after we checked out. The B&B itself is a beautiful Victorian inside and out, and tastefully decorated throughout. All of the spaces are warm and inviting. Breakfast is a must - they certainly pride themselves in this department (in all departments, really). Most all of the ingredients are top notch, organic and locally sourced, not to mention cooked to perfection. The proprietors are also delightful and extremely helpful while never coming across as intrusive. I can't recommend West End Inn enough to anyone who's visiting Portland. read more

I wish I could rate this B and B 6 stars! If you are looking for a great B and B experience this is the place. Look no further you have found the best of the best. You should really only read reviews from the last couple of years because that is when the West End Inn changed hands, and I think there have been many wonderful additions and improvements to this properties and the rooms since. First off, all the interactions with Deb and Scott were helpful, professional and lovely. They really seemed to go out their way to make sure that we had a wonderful experience. They seemed to take pride in making sure we had a great stay. From all of the communications to the incredible breakfasts and the rooms, this is really a first class B and B. I was traveling with my mom and we stayed in room 4 where they can turn the king bed into two twins and moved into room 2 with a king bed because room 4 had already been reserved. Both were wonderful, but Room 2 was really fancy and I know I will be coming with my husband and staying in room 2!!! When we first got there, Deb pulled out a map and gave us the lay of land of Portland and told us about the good shopping places and gave us an incredible recommendation for dinner, one of the best we've had, Back Bay Grill. She checked in with us just the right amount and then let us do our thing. The breakfast is incredible, I think these guys used to own a restaurant. The rooms were meticulous and the beds really really cozy. Definitely stay here if you want the perfect B and B experience. read more

If I could give this inn ten stars, I would. Our stay lasted a week, and it was everything we could have asked for and more. The inn is located in the West End of town, and the area is beautiful. It is a short 5-10 minute walk to Longfellow Square, and only a 20-25 minute walk to the heart of downtown. We stayed in room #1; it was perfect and impeccably clean! We had a private deck attached to this room, which was wonderful too. You can tell that the inn has been recently updated, and it shows. Every detail is taken care of! Deb and Scott go above and beyond for their guests, and their hospitality is unmatched. They are doing everything right! Each morning, we could look forward to an amazing breakfast - cooked to order. The breakfast itself is worth raving about! From pancakes and french toast, to frittatas and omelets, you can tell that Scott knows what he's doing in the kitchen! They also accommodate any dietary needs, so if you have a gluten allergy, rest assured that you will not have to worry. Each afternoon, there are cookies waiting for you, along with tea available all night. Please do yourself a favor and book your next stay in Portland here! From the first phone call i placed asking if the 2 night minimum could be overlooked , to the check out this was a great experience. Deb and Scott are friendly and warm and the hotel resonates that warm through and through. I book a night for my lady and my 2 year anniversary, my only difficulty was picking the room out that would fit my ladies' design esthetic. Located in a beautiful neighborhood on the west end of Portland, the building is beautiful. We stayed in Room #1, a first floor gem with an absolutely amazing bed that has made my partner and I seriously consider steeping up our mattress game! Oh man, i sleep light usually, but i was in some serious deep sleep that night! My partner is a stickler for cleanliness, and she could not stop raving about how impeccably well kept the room was. The only, and i mean only negative i can state is the lack of a fridge in the room, putting my two Allagash brews in the fridge out in the entry way made me feel like mom was going to yell at me at any moment..haha. Breakfast was focused on local organic food, and boy could you tell. She had the maine blueberry pancakes and I the eggs benedict, both were near perfect. Coffee was great and Deb even brought out some sparkling cider for us to toast our anniversary. very thoughtful. highly recommend staying at The West End Inn if you find yourself in Portlan for any reason. Overwhelmingly beautiful Inn with warm atmosphere and a staff that keeps that warmth. We will be back for sure. read more

This Inn was absolutely stunning. It was the perfect balance between old charm and modern amenities. The room was a perfect size, very comfortable bed, beautiful linens, recently updated bathroom, seating area and very quiet room. The breakfast that is provided is delicious with using local ingredients. Throughout the day beverages are available as well as snacks and homemade treats in the dining area. I can't wait to go back in the Spring/Summer time. Victoria and Heather were very sweet and accommodating. Perfect relaxing and romantic getaway to Portland. read more

In a nice quiet neighborhood. Beautiful old brick house. Walking distance to many restaurants,bars and galleries. Place is immaculate. So clean and well maintained. We felt so comfortable there. As if we were at home. Stayed in the main floor room. Very nice had a private porch. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was updated nicely. I would absolutely stay here again when in Portland. Thanks for a great stay. Oh yeah. Breakfast is amazing! Also Home made cookies. I was very happy with my stay! West End Inn is situated in a cozy little house about 10-20 minutes from parts of the city with higher restaurant density. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Parking was not as easy as I thought it would be, but Deb was really helpful, letting us use the little driveway. Our room was extremely comfortable. The bed was basically the best I've ever been in. It was tastefully decorated and very clean. Wifi was great. Breakfast was great too. Great rotation of hot options, cooked to order (I was with a vegetarian). Cons: - a bit of a walk to where much of the restaurants are - common space beyond the dining area was a bit cramped Very homey and comfortable stay. read more

B&Bs are always a risk when we travel - but this one was well worth the gamble! The owners are extremely accommodating. They were able to adjust their availability for the weekend to keep us in the same room for the entirety of our stay. They know EVERYTHING about the area and can offer perfect advice on where to eat, shop, explore, and just about everything else. And don't even get me started on the breakfast - we live in the NYC area, so its hard to beat some of the food we've found there. West End Inn can easily compete and outdo most of the establishments we frequent back home. The location was perfect for our romantic weekend. Tucked off the beaten path but extremely convenient to pretty much everything. It was quiet and lovely. The rooms are wonderful as well - a little on the small side but tastefully chic and very comfortable! The only thing keeping this inn from getting a 5 was the bathroom. It was perfectly clean with the toiletries we needed but I would have loved a bit more luxury in that space. We are certainly going back the next time we visit ME! read more
