This hotel is in the heart of the old town in Pamplona, walking outside your door, you can find great restaurants, Tapas bars and sites to see in minutes. The staff is outstanding, always there to help We stayed 3 nights, would have stayed 4, but our first time there they were fully booked for the next night. On our return trip we made sure we booked the 2 nights ahead of time. We had started our trip in Budapest where our Viking river cruise began. It was our first time on such a fancy trip. We are Pilgrims at heart, which is why we extended our trip for 3 more weeks. We ended in Amsterdam but took a train to Lourdes, then Bayonne, we were looking to hike an obscure Camino route " Camino del Batzon". It went from Bayonne to Pamplona. After our first day we found how obscure it was, Almost all the hotels had shut down due to lack of pilgrims. Time for plan B, we decided to go directly to Pamplona. We backtracked to Bayonne, then a bus to Pamplona, where our first stay was at this hotel. What a great city and made better by our hosts, so we hiked from Pamplona to Longrona and back. This was our shortest Camino, but I can now say I've been on all 5 of the major ones. Three complete from 2015, over 850 kilometers and 4 credentials We have stayed in Alburques on every Camino, so don't think this is an "Alburque", it's a nice place to re center. Stumbled upon Campanilla because it was close to our hotel. Can't say enough great things about it. The owner PePe, was more than hospitable. He gave us a tour of the menu and guided us to what we should eat since we are visiting and unsure. His recommendations didn't disappoint! Every dish had a home made feel and so much flavor. For starters PePe gave us a complimentary paella- which was very tasty and mixed with a good variety of seafood. Then we had the Spanish omelet with meatballs with green peppers- amazing! Read the positive reviews on this site and a couple of others, so I decided to give it a try while in town for business. Pepe, who I believe is the owner, warmly greeted me and correctly assumed that I needed the English menu. Before I even ordered, he served me a small appetizer of potato salad on a slice of bread. Pepe spoke some English, but I had no problem communicating with him. I counted off 4 tapas dishes I wanted to order, but he actually stopped me from ordering way too much. Therefore, I ordered the fried calamari and chorizo tapas, and they were excellent! The calamari rings were huge but oh so tender. Pepe recommended I eat the calamari with an aioli sauce with some bread, almost like a sandwich. Delicious, esp since the aioli was nice and garlicky. The chorizo was tasty if a bit oily, but not surprised since it is a sausage. For dessert I ordered the homemade flan that came with 3 piles of whipped cream. It was drizzled with caramel sauce and was great. I may have liked it a bit denser but was very happy with it. He also served a couple of chocolate ice cream truffles covered with chocolate sprinkles. Bonus! It was a great experience for this out of town visitor. As others have said, Pepe is the man!! We stayed at a nearby hotel because of an early outgoing flight the next day. I quickly looked on Yelp for some food suggestions and decided on Campanillas. Upon sitting down Pepe introduced himself and made some recommendations, but first was the homemade sangria. He brought all of the ingredients tableside and proceeded to teach us his sangria recipe. Moments later we were drinking delicious sangria from frosted mugs. Thereafter came the parade of homemade tapas - ham/cheese on bread - paella - potato salad with tuna, olives, and vegetables. We also ordered a "typical" Spanish dish consisting of omelette, fried pepper, and meatballs. The dish was homemade and simply delicious. For my entree I ordered lamb chops, which came with a red pepper salad, and fries. I almost forgot dessert, which was flan with whipped cream and caramel sauce. The entire experience from the hospitality to the food was delightful. I left more than full and it was a perfect last meal in Madrid. I would absolutely recommend Campanillas if you're in the area. This is a small, local restaurant where you could spend several hours shooting the sh with a group of friends over cold, local beers and light bites on a warm summer day. The food is good- we had pulpo, croquettes, and a meat dish with cheese and all were very tasty... and extremely affordable. We had a light starter with cheese and meat on the house, and this was very tasty- along with complimentary olives. We saw these Yelp reviews, and then we walked by the restaurant several times - not very well marked - before we realized we were standing right in front. My mom wasn't feeling well after so many Spanish meals so we asked for vegetables with less oil and he kindly suggested artichokes with a little ham which hit the spot. The vinegar in the dish helped settle the stomach. He also recommended the veal fillet to me and offered a salad option instead of fries so I could have a healthier option. One of the best services you will ever receive in Europe - Pepe is accommodating, helps you order the best things on their menu, and so funny. Senior Pepe is easily my favorite new friend in Spain. Most places I've been have been less than enthused to help Americans, but Pepe was an absolute treat. Like so many folks who stay near the airport for a flight the next day and look up reviews for a great place for their last dinner in Spain, we were influenced by the great reviews of this spot. Fellow Yelpers were not wrong to recommend this as THE spot. My wife and I walked in and Pepe was there to greet us in the most welcoming fashion, asking us where we lived and inviting us to partake in our "last supper" in Spain. Asking where he grew up he made sure we knew it was Barajas, and not Madrid (wink, wink). We put our trust in Pepe to make selections of tapas to go with the great Roja wine. His complimentary tapa of sardines and olives was very nice as a starter. Then came the jamon Iberica, then veal, tortilla (the best one we had in Spain), and homemade meatballs. Another dish of vegetables cooked to perfection. This was rather filling before we were served two complimentary chocolate truffles (again homemade) which were to die for. We then asked for flan for dessert and he suggested an additional cake (cheese) for my wife. Both desserts were heavenly. Pepe then served us complimentary "Ruavieja"....a lemony drink like the Italian lemoncello but better. As we interacted with other diners (the whole place was so relaxed that that was possible and it was important to interact with them to find out they were regular customers that were expats yet the majority of the clients are local) Pepe showed us how to make a special flaming coffee liquor. As we continued to interact with both locals, expats and tourists, Pepe generously gave my wife a gift of memento of Madrid, I a bota bag and a cap. This seems to be a trademark of Pepe's. The food was very tasty and was definitely homemade by the family of Pepe's. It was his sister who was the cook that tonight. Photos, hugs and camaraderie, his giving me a chance to slice the jamon, made for a very special late afternoon/evening leaving us with a pleasant and positive impression of Madrid and Spain.
