I was missing a small part on my canon ae1 a lever that would rewind the film and he replaced it in minutes and free of charge. I've had him repair one of my cameras before and the cost was half as much as another place wanted to charge me. He's very knowledgeable and will give you advice and great explanations about the problem and how to hopefully not let it happen again. I feel bad about leaving this review since this is a small business, but I feel like people need to know my experience with Camera Max over the last year. Last fall (2018), I bought a Fujii GW670 broken from eBay for very cheap in hopes that I could get it fixed. I didn't have a lot of hope that it could be repaired but I thought it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I found Camera Max on yelp and the reviews were good so I brought my camera in. I had no problems the first time I went to in, Harry was friendly and assured me he could fix my camera in about 2 weeks, even though he didn't really listen to me when I tried to explain what was wrong with the camera. He took my information and I left the camera with him. This is where the issues began. Harry said he would call me when the camera is ready. I know that he is running a small business and he probably has a lot of cameras ahead of mine so I didn't worry when he didn't call after 2 weeks. But I decided to give a check in call after 2 months. At that time Harry (or whoever answered the phone) had no idea what I was calling about or in what stage my camera was in. I was given a swift "oh yeah I know where that is, let me take a look and I'll call you back". Then I would hear nothing. The first time I just let it slide, but I made it a habit to call once every 6 weeks or so to see if I could get an update. I was fine being told that the camera was not repairable, but each time I would call I got the same confusion of not knowing where my camera was or if it could be fixed. Each time I called I was quickly pushed off the phone and told they would "call me back" Finally, about 2 months ago I called and demanded answers and I was told that my camera was not repairable. An answer! That was all fine and good but I still wanted the camera back as a part of my collection of non working cameras. Who ever I talked to on the phone said that my camera was in pieces and would need to be put together again. Fine, just let me know when I can come pick it up. Then, radio silence from Camera Max again. During this whole year, I would pop by the shop to see if I could talk to them in person, but every time I came by the store was closed. I often would come by on Saturday's when yelp has Camera Max listed as open, but I wait wait around for 30 minutes or so and no one would come. I'm sure Harry is doing his best as camera repair is a dying art form. But, after waiting around for my camera for a year now with no updates from Camera Max at all, I have to just call this a wash and never bring anything to them again. I hope my review doesn't sway people from supporting Harry's craft but more as a warning sign: beware, you may never see your camera again. I read more

I have a Nikon FM that my friend gave me. It was working fine until one day it decided to give up on me. I tried to take it directly to Nikon but they do not fix old cameras. So I went to Samy's and they referred me to Harry. He finished my camera within a few days. I turned it in on 1/18 and got it done on 2/3. Although I must say that the price I pay for the repair ($158) was a little bit more than the price of a used camera, I didn't bother cause this has a sentimental value. After a few weeks, 2/21, the camera stopped working but now I am back and he serviced it under warranty. The advance lever is jammed and he fixed it with no cost and he put the DOF lever and the lens release button with new parts with no cost. Thank you Harry! read more

Nobody repairs film cameras anymore except for Harry. Took Minolta XE-7 to camera max and he gave me a written estimate after opening the bottom base plate and determining the most likely problem for shutter not firing. Included in cost was CLA and seals. He called back after 2 weeks and completed repair with 90 day warranty. I highly recommend this place for anyone who still shoots film. **After shooting one roll...the self-timer locked up and shutter wouldn't fire. Took it back to Harry. Last year, after breaking the shutter on my Olympus Om2n and being quoted $400+ for a fix over at Steve's (like hell) and another shop not wanting to fix it. Hate to rag on a small business that specializes in a dying art, but there's some shady stuff happening at Max's. I dropped off a point and shoot camera here, was waiting for weeks (he was supposed to call after a week with news, but nothing, then I called and he said another week and he'll give an update, still no call after that week) only to finally be told that he couldn't repair my camera. Oh well, he wasn't going to charge anything so no biggie. After picking up my camera and getting home, I realize that my camera has been cannibalized for parts. The lens was removed and replaced with another lens, lots of residue and glue permanently stuck inside, etc making this dead camera even more useless with zero hope of repair for the future. I have an old Nikon lens that I'm very partial to. When it stopped working, I took it to Nikon in Manhattan Beach and they told me it was unrepairable. Older lens, no parts on hand they said. A local camera shop suggested Camera Max in Montrose as a possible spot to get the lens repaired. It was quite a drive, so I called before heading up there. The proprietor assured me he could fix the lens. I was dubious, but like I mentioned I really like this lens. Sure enough, he repaired it. At a reasonable price. Harry changed the lens mount bayonet on my lens that accidentally broke when I dropped my backpack and the camera inside. Left it on a Tuesday and was ready to be picked up within 4 days. At first I asked him when he would have it ready since I was leaving town and was simply wondering, he said I will call you. On my way out of town I received a voice mail letting me know the lens was ready to be picked up. Was charged $45 for the labor since I bought my bayonet piece off eBay. Harry is nice and straight forward, no gimmicks. He even pointed out my lens has a bit of a focus issue but that was a existing issue and I was fine with it that way, I don't really see the issue but he pointed it out anyway. I had an old nikon kit lens and only the mounting piece was broken. All around pasadena, stores told me itd take 1-2 weeks and 100$ to do the job. But I found Camera Max and Harry would do the job for 67$ even. When I asked for how long, I was surprised to hear that I could pick it up the next day. I picked up my newly fixed Nikon D70 this past weekend and I'm thrilled with the results Harry provided! I barely had to show him the problem (an error in the card reader) before he knew exactly what needed to be fixed. I also pointed out a chip in the camera base, and he replaced it with a used (but completely unscathed) piece for free! Brought in a very old (and somewhat difficult to find) Tokina 28-85mm f4 in a Nikon mount with a stuck aperture (ring/lever weren't working either). Harry fixed it up quick, easy, and at a very reasonable price (grease on the aperture). He even made sure to show me before I left the shop that everything was good by pulling a Nikon body out to test the lens against some focus charts. Talked a bit with him, really cool and knowledgeable lens tech. I'm really happy I found this shop - I now have a go-to lens tech who works on old manual focus glass like mine. read more

I dropped my Nikon Digital SLR camera while on a trip in Europe and it stopped working excepting in manual mode. I called camera Max based on very good Yelp reviews. I talked to Harry on the phone who asked me to bring it in for inspection. He gave me an estimate the very same day and told me that he was going to replace the main board. He also said it will be ready in a few days and sure enough, he called me when the job was completed and charged me exactly the same as the estimated amount ! Recommended by another camera repairman, Harry speedily repaired my Nikon fm light meter and did not pressure me to fix another camera that I brought in for an estimate. I brought in my camera on friday afternoon and after a call with the estimate on saturday , he stayed after closing so that I could get it back saturday afternoon. Came here on a couple of occasions and was completely satisfied every time, Harry is definitely my camera guy now. The tripod mounting socket on my friend's Fuji X100F had gotten loose and needed tiny new JIS screws (not your average screw). He wasn't expecting to get it fixed that day, but we were in the area and figured we'd drop in. Turns out it was an unexpectedly non-trivial fix, but Harry had some screws on hand fixed it in a few minutes right on the spot, no charge! It was then that I knew I'd be back for any repairs. Welp, turns out it was sooner than later. I bought a Yashica TLR on eBay which had a slow shutter. Harry knew it had been a while since this camera had been serviced, so he suggested an overhaul (more than a standard "clean, lube, adjust" or CLA). The price was fair, and camera came back in perfect shape in less than a week. Score! ...but unfortunately, after I had put a few rolls through the TLR, the shutter got stuck. Brought it back in. Harry warrantied his work and did another check and overhaul for free. Camera's working great again, and hopefully will for the foreseeable future. Great guy, great shop, highly recommended. Fun bonus: seeing what new (read: really cool old vintage) cameras end up scattered around the shop and asking to see what he might have on sale at any given moment. read more
