I need to try a hot chocolate here one of these days. My friend ordered an oat milk one on this visit and said it tasted like a dessert in itself. Vegan, veggie, or gluten-free? No problem. Papercup has you covered. I've come here on multiple occasions and requested gluten-free bread without anyone batting an eye. Most American restaurants seem to want to make you feel like a criminal to even ask. My egg omelette on this visit had so many yummy toppings and was so big, bread wasn't even needed. It's a wonder these wizards can make such creations in such a small space! We happened to nab the corner table directly across from the cake case and I watched as our food was made with so much love. A drizzle of sauce, a squeeze of lime...this is the kind of place you want to get behind because they treat you like part of the family. Caveat: this place is small and you'll want to go at downtimes if you can (avoid breakfast/brunch on the weekends, for example) or else you'll be stuck outside waiting for a table to free up. You'll see locals popping in for their usual coffee orders and a muffin, then pop back out. For such a small shop, they have an oddly large unisex bathroom in the back. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). The sandwich was so pretty to look at I had to take a piccy, and even without the cheese it was a bit of a taste sensation. The soup was also very tasty once it had cooled down a bit from lava temperature, and the coffee wasn't too shabby either. So thumbs up from me on this new venture. This place only opened last weekend, so I was keen for a nosey and went in with an open mind. It's Scandinavian/Scottish which I think is a pretty amazing combination and is tucked off Dumbarton Road behind the supermarket-that-shall-not-be-named. It's really easy to find if you're following the map marker on the Yelp app. It's a lot bigger than I expected - a beautiful open space, with a mezzanine and loads of seating. I was the only customer in around 12pm on a Thursday so I got my choice of seats - I actually found it hard to choose where to sit as everywhere looks so cosy. There's a super cute penguin nook, as well as couches, window seating and a vinyl corner, so plenty to choose from. There's also the mezzanine which isn't ready just yet, but will add even more seating/space to the place. I took a seat and ordered a coffee (I know!) and some cake. At the moment, the food is strictly cakes and bakes but they're hoping to have a chef starting soon doing some savory Nordic cooking. Yum. I had the raspberry and lime polenta cake with a V60 coffee. I don't normally drink coffee but decided I wanted to give it a shot here, because I like to live dangerously. They do Dear Green and the guy was really helpful suggesting that maybe a V60 was a better option than a long black for a rookie. I really appreciated that and really liked the coffee as it was nice and smooth, and didn't make me totally lose my marbles. The cake was excellent, very spongy, soft and also gluten free. I was there to get some work done - at the moment, they don't have wifi but they're expecting to have it by Monday 8 February - and I found the vibe in here just perfect. The music was ace, the atmosphere was chilled and inspirational and I was totally on cloud 9 as I was really loving live as I drank my coffee, worked away and ate cake. I'd been there for a while and a whole bunch of people seemed to arrive at the same time so it was great to see it fill up. It's very kid-friendly as there is a lot of room to move around with buggies/prams. I ordered more cake and this time tried the Copenhagen bun. HOLY SHIZ. Was this the best bun I've ever eaten? Yes, yes it was. These are made by Freedom Bakery and it was so pillowy soft and delicious, it tasted like it just came out the oven. It was so good that I actually got two more to take home with me. I have no shame. So all up, I really loved this place. It was great to try somewhere new, it has a lovely vibe and the guys working here are super friendly and welcoming. Named so as it sits on the corner of Dumbarton & Meadow Road. They don't have a sign as yet but my coffee-loving eyeballs spotted all the coffee making gear a quality coffee shop doth require & enter did I... I'm a fan of the look of this place - lots of wood and metal which is v.s'nice. Not many tables as such but still a good amount of seating in here. It was both nice and airy & warm (bonus this time of year!) at the same time. The greeting was also very warm from the 2 lovely guys behind the counter. I asked if they had soya milk which unfortunately they didn't so I opted for a regular cow milked flat white. They use Dear Green coffee beans here so straight away I knew it was going to be a damn fine cup of coffee before that liquid jump-cable juice had even hit my lips. Upon the lovely long counter they had a few cakes and bakes - a banana loaf, a salted caramel millionaires shortbread, some peanut butter brownies & also some undescribed biscuits which turned out to be ginger snaps & free ones at that! Yas. Bonus. I took a ginger snap & a brownie home to try later and both were delicious, especially the immense peanut buttery gorgeous, dense, chocolatey brownie, uh! So so good. We were in a couple of weeks back and were pleased to find that they now serve hot food (we were told by a friend that they had issues getting a license to sell food) and we shared a Salmon and Avocado Bowl, which kind of does what it says on the tin. The ingredients are top quality, they don't skimp on the salmon and it has a great salad dressing. I would strongly recommend you try it. The cafe is clearly cut from the Aussie/NZ style, slotting into the West End somewhere between Papercup and Avenue G, without ever feeling like a watered down rip off. They clearly take pride in the quality of their coffee, so I would recommend dropping in, if only for a takeaway. Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.
