I never learned to skate as a child. I went to Skateworld with friends about seven years ago, but…read morenever continued to practice. Recently, two of my friends found out that I wanted to learn, so we all went out on a Sunday evening. Sundays, Skateworld closes at 8:30. We arrived at 6:30 which gave us plenty of time. Open skate and skate rental costs $25 per person. It felt a bit steep to me, but I realize that they don't make money on much else so it's really not bad. They offer lockers at a price. There is free filtered water. It was a bit odd when my friends brought me a gift bag with knee pads, that they said no gift bags of any kind were allowed. It seemed odd as I thought children had roller skating birthday parties at places like this. At least they let us take out the knee pads and carry in the empty bag. Anyway, the space wasn't too crowded on Sunday, so it was easy to practice. I also rented one of those little wheeled walkers so I didn't fall all over the place. I was a bit bummed to learn that they didn't offer lessons, outside of their monthly "academy". I would have loved to drop in for a single session. All in all, it was a pretty good time. I would return to skate again.

I was a regular adult skater at Skateworld for years. On July 1, 2026 another patron threatened to…read morekill me after using a homophobic slur and followed me on the floor. I reported it immediately to Gena Trepte, who was and is the manager of Skateworld and was on site the entire night. Owner Brett Stang did not permanently ban that person. The only action described to me was that we were told not to interact. I spoke with Gena Trepte (manager) twice that night, including a second conversation of about 10 minutes while the same person stood behind her mocking the situation. There is absolutely no security guard or security representative at Skateworld at any session, including adult skate nights Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Fountain Valley, Holiday Skate Center, and Cal Skate GT all have security inside and outside. A San Diego Police incident was created (26029566). I stopped going. Skateworld is NOT in the safe location and all patrons should be very cautious about attending.

I have been really enjoying meeting up with my local sk8r girlfriends for Friday night skate night…read more O'side parks and recreation runs it from 6-8pm seasonally on Friday nights. Further information is available on their web & media sites. It's free so bring your own skates and protective gear. No rentals. Fun people with all sort of levels show up. You can blade or roller skate on the outdoor hockey rink. They play fun music and even do routine type dances that you can join in on too. Really fun! This event truly brings up childhood memories and nostalgia for me!

You just have to check their Instagram page to make sure it hasn't been canceled due to weather or other conflicts (oceanside_rollerskating). But they're there pretty much every Friday night from 6-8pm which makes for an awesome night as it's usually during the sunset, and then after the sunset they showcase their super fun rink lights and people wear glow in the dark wheels and it's just really fun! They also usually host "Sunday Roll-Outs" every Sunday morning down at the Oceanside Strand, meeting up under the pier, near and/or at the amphitheater, from around 10am - 2pm. Then, at some point during that time, they all roller skate together down the entire south end of the Strand, which is seriously EPIC! That's also advertised on their Instagram page, so double check that before heading out. They always play great music and everyone is so welcoming even to the newest skaters. They always help new people learn some basics, too! I've met so many nice people through them, and have even made a few really good friends through Oceanside Rollerskating, so I'm very grateful to the people who have organized this.

We decided to check out Fantasy on Ice during the holidays with a group of friends at this new…read moreLiberty Station location. We went on a Sunday afternoon at 11am and we timed it perfectly. There weren't a lot of folks out there but as the day went on, the rink began to fill up. I imagine people preferred to skate when it gets darker but for the kids in our group who were under 8, daytime was perfect. My husband brought his own skates so we thought it would be quick to get him out there but the lines took almost 15-20 min to get through. There weren't long lines or anything but just took a long time for the one person working to get people through. At least they were nice. The cost was $14 for adults and $12 for children. There wasn't a different cost for skate rental vs. bringing your own so it's just a preference if you have your own. The rink is a pretty decent size for an outdoor rink and is very intimate. It's not huge so you won't see kids speed skating and making it dangerous for little ones. Don't expect the ice to be NHL quality but it's what you'll expect with an outdoor rink...in San Diego! ; ) We'll be back for sure in the future with our little peanut. We had a blast!
