Horrible customer service. Dr is motivated by money not patient care. Front staff are great, feel bad for them..... cancelled me as a patient due to a billing issue, which was my error but was quickly resolved. Treated me as if I was a delinquent client with a bad customer history, which I have never missed an appointment, never showed up late or not paid in full, I dont even think in my 10ish years I even rescheduled an appointment. Treated every appointment like it was my 1st visit, no relationship. Strange jokes and odd sense of humor. I guess he did me a favor in the end.... thanks! read more

DO NOT GO HERE FOR COSMETIC PROCEDURES!!!I had seen Dr. Van Reken to get rid of a double chin. The doctor performed Kybella injections to dissolve fat. The doctor placed no Kybella under my chin, where the fat was located, instead he placed 3 vials of Kybella in my neck. I thought the placement was odd but he said there were arteries under my chin and it was dangerous. He said the small needle he was using for the injections could nick an artery. Trusting him, I let him proceed, I thought the Kybella must spread out from the injection points. After the swelling had gone down I started to notice loose skin, sagging, and crepeyness in the areas of injection. I asked the doctor if he was aware that this could be a side effect of Kybella, he told me he was. Well, the doctor never told ME, the patient, this could be an issue. Had he told me I would never have had it done. I went from a smooth neck to a neck with wrinkles, sagging, and SEVERE loss of elasticity. I gave the doctor the opportunity to correct his error, he offered another procedure which he made me pay for. This procedure did NOTHING to correct the problem. I called the office to see what else could be done and the doctor refused to work with me. When someone makes a mistake, professionally, I believe they should fix the mistake they created and not charge the client for their error. I believe, that they, in good faith should continue to work on fixing their error until it has been corrected. But most importantly, when it comes to medical procedures, I believe the doctor should disclose all risks, which Dr. Van Reken DID NOT DO! read more

I never met the doc, but the staff is really nice and efficient. I got a deal on living social and got a facial and massage. I was studying for my board license and needed a day of relaxation before I go in... Got a massage first and met their brand new massage therapist, Sarah. She is awesome!! And so super sweet! I told her I had been clicking on a mouse all day yesterday and my shoulder blades were sore and my lower back hurt because I was sitting for 6 hours straight! She worked me soooo good! She has such strong hands! And her stretching is the best!!!! I loved it!!! I can't wait to go back to her.. Kendra did my facial after my massage and I had a really good experience with her too. She waxed me as well and though I wish she would have tweezed the leftover hairs after she waxed I think she did a good job. I would come here again. Give these girls a try despite their boss. :) read more

After reading some of these reviews, I felt that I really needed to send a review as well even though this is late coming. I went there on a Groupon because I wanted to have some facial skin treatments before my sons wedding. The first question asked of me was when I had my GYN appointment! What? And then I was asked about my blood pressure and a younger gal came in and took my blood pressure and the doctor tried to prescribe me blood pressure medication. I am my own health advocate and take my body seriously, and was completely taken back by this entire appointment as this was so far out from why I was even there! I left there, never had anything done, and didn't go near that place ever again. This doctor should not be practicing. Linda read more

After 3 years, I still have a very visible scare on my face from Dr. Van Reken burning me. My dermatologist said this was permanent burn damage and the pigmentations will never come back. I am so disappointed and can't believe this doctor is still allowed to practice after SERIOUSLY BURNING patients with a laser. read more

Best Dr my wife and I ever had. When you are sick he takes the time to find out all your ailments one by one and systematically gets them all addressed. He might be with us a hour addressing al our needs. Any other Dr just leaves at the 15 min mark. Went with a broken finger one day and in that same day got me in somewhere to get an Xray and diagnosed it. He had to push local clinics to take xray and have radiologist look at it same day. This really saved my finger because of the way it was broken and what needed to be done to let it heal right. If I would have waited a week elsewhere for radiologist it would have set wrong. He also cured my wife of something that she has seen numerous other Drs for and they never could cure. He is bilingual also (spanish). read more

Well I was actually yelping to get a response. Initially I thought it was just management and not the Dr. who made the decision to cancel me as a patient. Didn't pass the smell test? For the record, the missed appointments were re scheduled, I repeat, rescheduled and i followed the recheduling policy. ( I have records/receipts of my charges from this office). Emergencies happen things happen. the last two recently missed appointments, that I can explain. First missed appointment -it was supposed to be a follow up appointment but i didnt have my lab tests yet ( I was waiting for my FSA and my insurance card) . I called to reschedule after the missed appointment and I requested if cancellation fees be waived .Medical staff agreed to re- schedule and waive the fees. So was it my fault? Second missed appointment - I had an emergency and was out of town and I called (I have my cellphone record to attest to this) and followed protocol which was cancel or re schedule 48 hours prior to the appointment. I was truly sorry to have missed that appointment but I had an emergency concerning my kid. The following day I immediately wanted to call office. Unfortunately I was not able to. The second day after the missed appointment I received the letter. I called back immediately and was really sorry and begged and was willing to pay the cancellation fees and wanted to reschedule. I was made to wait for more than 20 minutes only to be told to call back in the afternoon . I did as I was told and called back. That was when everything got so disappointing. Staff reprimanded me and did'nt want to hear anything ( office probably made the decision already so staff thought talking to me was just a waste of time) . I told staff that I was willing to pay the fees and can Dr. reconsider. But no, staff didnt want to hear about it. Nothing was mentioned about the fees anymore. For them it was a done deal. They didn't want to have anything to do with me. Anyway, I could not do anything about it, can I? I asked about my 3 other future appointments. Office staff said "oh no we are cancelling that too", No explanation, nothing. That was so unprofessional and unnecessary and I really was taken aback how a long time patient (utilizing all his services) can be dismissed just like that and so abruptly. So tell me, how can they charge me fees when they cancelled 3 future appointments before Feb. 28? The letter states I still have until Feb 28 to use the office as my care provider. So, office is lying? Without so much of an explanation. That's why I said abandonment. I actually initially sought this office out as my primary care provider 6 years ago not so much of the doctor's "good reputation" (check reviews) but because of the "other professional services" this office offers. That was important to me. However, in fairness Dr. Reken turned out to be a good and professional MD provider as well. Bottomline?- I guess they have all the right to cancel and refuse clients or patients anytime (because they are annoyed, dislike a patient or any other reason ), however I am also yelping to help future patients make a decision and how this office treats their customers/patients. This office can dump anyone just like that if patients no longer serve a purpose. This medical office is very unreasonable. Horrible management. I know I also have that right to share how I feel, how they made me feel. As I was reading the response, office were talking about cancellation fees, profitability etc. This office did not care about anything . They care more about profits and bottomline and not preserving a relationship and the well being of their patients. As a marketer, it costs more to acquire new patients than retain loyal and existing ones. That was a bad choice or judgement on their part. But I realized I am just a number. I am keeping my 2 star rating for this medical office for the way they treated me, their former staff (everyone is new except Andrea) and maybe other patients too who can relate to me. So, people just ask around. Read other people's reviews. Are they really telling the truth or not. We are not here to bash someone we are here to yelp our disappointments, etc unbiased the way we see it so that they can improve their service. So that clients/patients can make an informed decision moving forward. Full stop. I am moving forward . This office really did not care at all except defend their position. read more

Initially went to the Doctor for tattoo removal. He has the best lasers and the best trained staff around. Even after moving from Reno to Portland I traveled back to Reno to complete the process. I've seen plenty of negative results from other tat removal places and didn't want to risk subpar work. The work of the Doctor and his staff is outstanding. Not just no scarring - the huge tat is gone and the skin looks exactly like all the skin around it. EXCELLENT WORK! Also decided to have a few large moles removed. The Doctor did it for about 1/3 the cost quoted by dermatologists and, again, the work was PERFECT. I don't know who these clowns are giving 1 star reviews, but they appear to be the same type of clueless posters found all over the internet (complete morons who blame everybody else for their own idiocy). I strongly recommend Doctor Van Reken to everyone I know who could utilize his services. Everybody I have recommended has been just as impressed as I have been. THANK YOU, DOCTOR! read more

I went to him for a procedure that I've had done many times from other doctors. I was surprised that it didn't take him nearly as long as what I was used to but he said he used a different product than the other doctors, so I didn't worry. I had zero results and when I went back to show him, he agreed that he saw no difference. He said he'd do it again for a slight discount, which I declined since it didn't work the first time! But he did kindly say he wouldn't charge me the $90 followup fee. I would not recommend him. read more

Horrible, the Doctor put too much Botox in my upper lip. I wanted to get rid of a gummy smile. I looked like the joker. Ive gone to other places and it turned out great, He said he could do nothing about it except make a note to put 1/2 as much next time. He did offer to give me a free facial, that you need 6 appointments before you see any results. The first would be no charge the rest would be 125. Each. Or I could pay 400. For a filler in my lip. I am not happy, I suggest you go somewhere else. I won't be able to smile for around 4 months read more

Calvin Van Reken, MD - Does this look natural? Run - Internal Medicine Near Me - Reno, Nevada

I am very thankful for the care that I have received from Dr Van Reken and his staff, for myself and my daughters. He is a caring and capable physician. His staff members work very hard to maintain a good rapport with their patients and are very accommodating. Dr. Van Reken spends extra time with his patients to ensure that their needs are met. He puts his best efforts into diagnosing and managing the symptomatic care of his patients in a way that goes above and beyond the standard for medical care today. read more

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING TO HIM!!!! I was s previous patient of Dr. Van Reken when he was located in Las Vegas. I was very pleased with him as an Internist then. I was very excited to find that he was still in Reno when we moved here. My husband and I established ourselves as him patients. My husband had a scheduled appointment with Dr. Van Reken. We have one car here in Reno. I went to the grocery store and the locking system in our 1998 Ford Explorer went crazy. As soon as the car had a problem, I called Dr Van Reken's office to let them know that my husband might not be able to make his appointment. I waited for 3 hours for the locksmith to come. I asked Van Reken's office if my husband could come later in the day because we had no way to get him there. They said that they were FULL for the day!!!!!! NO ONE TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE $110.00 CHARGE FOR A MISSED APPOINTMENT!!!!!! I called back after we got the bill to see if there was some mistake. After Bianca talked to the Dr., she informed me that one of the 20 or 30 pages of papers that I signed said that this would be what happened if I didn't give a 24 hour notice prior to an appointment cancellation. ARE YOU KIDDING~THERE IS NO WAY I COULD GIVE a 24 HOUR NOTICE FOR A BROKEN CAR! We live in Sparks, I guess the cab ride could've been $110 as well. A doctor that has that many patients that he cannot possibly see you if you do not get there in the exact moment of your appointment certainly doesn't need to charge you $110 for unavoidable car problem. DR. VAN REKEN REFUSED TO HAVE ANY COMPASSION FOR OUR SITUATION. In the 11 years I saw him in Las Vegas, I never missed an appointment. Who wants a Dr. with NO COMPASSION???? Not me, he is TOO EGOTISTICAL for words. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING TO HIM!!!! HE WILL MESS YOU OVER, TOO! I have never written a negative review before. read more

HE DID NOT CARE ABOUT MY PRIVACY OR DIGNITY. Dr. Van Reken refused to treat me, as a cash customer, because I would not allow him to take my photo. I had to have a skin tab somewhat near "my privates" removed. His said staff needed a photograph if the skin tab. Then they wanted a photograph of my face. I said NO WAY...why do you need a photo of my face to treat my upper thigh area? The doctor, through his staff refused to treal me and I was asked to leave the office. read more

If Dr Van Reken thinks Oscar is friendly that just shows how much he pays attention to how his practice is run. If hanging up on someone after Oscar telling me they can't get me in for a month for a cold...I say that won't work but thanks then it sounds like he has to sensitive of a employee. Because of this employee rude behavior Dr Van Reken will not only lose me as a patient he will also lose my wife and son. We will not be treated with disrespect that is shown at this office. We have already found a new Dr and couldn't be happier with the front office staff and Dr. Take your time picking a a Dr but this one definitely is not worth your time. The Dr doesn't even have the guts to have a conversation with the patient regarding the situation. If you want your 28 year old employees to determine the fate of your practice....good luck. Might want to talk to both sides before making a decision. read more

My name is Andrew I have been seeing doctor Calvin for almost a year. I had a lot a problems in my life I use to live a pretty violent life. All the other doctors doped me up on psych meds and anti depressants that actually caused more issues. I read some of the responses other yelp users have written and I would have to disagree. My life is in a much better place because of Calvin I'm 24 with 3 kids and Woman and she said going to Jim was a blessing. His staff is the most tender hearted staff I have ever met. They are very competent and very professional. My first visit was a shot in the dark I wanted to get better and live life again. That's what he helped me do he took time to listen tried different approaches I never had issues getting my medications. He has an astounding sense of humor that I love in a doctor I don't want to speak to a robot I want a person and as a doctor he is Professional and highly intellectual. He makes me laugh ever time I see him I enjoy my doctor visits I love the staff they are very sweet kind and caring. Couldn't ask for more. I have a messed up back and thanks to Doctor Calvin I'm on the road to recovery I trust his advice. I also had a deep tissue massage which was amazing. I mean do you want a doctor to bullshit you or tell you flat out? For me I want to know if he offers skin products it's honest and I like a real ass person. For all those other disatisfied haters remember you are seeing a laser and MD he is going to operate both sides of the fence. Common sense I knew that buy his title. Calvin your the best doctor I ever had Andrew R. Thank you very much for everything read more

Calvin Van Reken, MD - With God's help he, put a good MD and LTD in my life. - Internal Medicine Near Me - Reno, Nevada

Save yourself some trouble, don't go see him! I went there for mild acne, and scars. My major concern were the scars as I control my acne with diet. He said couldn't treat my scars without treating the acne first, so I bought a red light treatment for $500+ long story short it ruined my skin. Treatment burnt my skin and left me with dark spots all over my face. It also activated my acne causing acne to flare up. I couldn't show my face for two weeks. When I went to his office he drained the active acne, asked for my insurance information, and I was surprised to see how concerned he was to know who my primary care doctor and my gynecologist. The girl that cleaned my face and put numbing cream on my face ended up contaminating the whole entire bottle of numbing cream. I don't think she knew what she was doing. Doctor Van Reken kept asking me if I wanted to make him my primary doctor and gynecologist until I told him I was good with my current doctors, he said cynically that he was fine with me keeping my current gynecologist but he wasn't sure about my primary care doctor, then he prescribed me some steroids and antibiotics for the actual problem. I went to see him within two weeks for a follow up appointment placed instead of a laser treatment for my scars. When I got there they wanted to do the laser for my scars without even looking at my skin first... I had to remind them that we had cancel that appointment and instead we schedule the follow up. They didn't seem to care about my case at all. I have never seen so many unprofessional staff in one place. Now I have worst problems to worry about. Whats worst is he didn't even seem to care, when I requested my money back, he said the chemical along was $400 dollars and couldn't refund me anything. He tried to sell me on everything to cure my dark spots. I asked if I was going to get some credit at least. He refused too! Don't go, I think he is just getting all kinds of treatments he can't keep up with, he can't focus on one thing only and all he really cares about is the money he is making, and not the actual patients. read more

I went to see Dr. Van Reken for varicose veins I had in my right leg from having kids. I'm 32 and have been very self conscious about these veins I stopped wearing shorts. Living with them for 10 years I was so ready do have them treated. Of course most options were very expensive. When I saw the Dr. I was pleased with the cost. I had the lazer done. afterwards I wasn't quite sure the progress cause it does take a couple months. I noticed a big difference. I went and had sclerotherapy done and it's been 2 weeks after the treatment and what a change. I am very pleased with the results. I plan on doing one more sclero and I think that'll get me to 100% satisfaction. I can actually wear shorts now and not be so mortified. Hope this helps anyone. I had read the reviews and was kind of discouraged but always best to find out for yourself as well. :) and the staff is very welcoming and kind. read more

This is the worst most unprofessional office I have ever been in. My appointment was at 9:00 am. I walked into near a dozen employees sitting around gossiping, they couldn't even manage to find a pen for me to fill out paper work. I sat for an hour in the patient room even though I was the only patient in the place. When I paid by check on my way out, the brilliant counter girl managed to lose my check after I left town for home. About 3 hours into my work shift I have about 40 missed calls from this office and about 5 nasty messages accusing me of stealing services. They also called and left equally unprofessional messages on my mothers phone which they got by, googling her name??? I called them back to discuss that my receipt clearly lists the check number I gave them... They proceed to call me a liar, and threaten to press charges against me for their losing my check.. I had a friend pay this for me over the phone. I would not recommend anyone go here... Please go to a specialist for your beauty needs, this guy is no plastic surgeon and the staff are not even nursing professionals... read more

I went to Van Reken several years ago in his Sparks office. Be very careful about visiting him because of this last 5 star review (I have my doubts). I went there on a advertised special they had, as I had facial skin issues. Asking him questions about safer alternatives, he pooh-poohed all of that. Just wanted to sell the expensive chemicals. I can't remember all the details, but I said NEVER again would I return. He's an intellectual, arrogant, braggart and know it all. He's friendly and talks a good story at first to lure you in, but don't fall for it. Like another reviewer said NINE drugs - that's outrageous, unprofessional and VERY unsafe. So glad to hear she got away from him. This doctor should be out of business! read more

I finally found a doctor who pays attention throughout my visit and knows how to extract all the information needed to fully address my concerns. I've been going to Dr. Van Reken for over 4 years now and my husband, who used to hate going to the doctor more than I did, has been Dr. Van Reken's patient for over 6 years. After seeing how well he took care of my husband's issues I knew this was the doctor I needed. He's always aware of the latest medical information, and he conveys it in plain simple terms that I can understand. He gives me the pros and cons of different treatment, medications, and procedures.. He has a great sense of humor that puts me at ease, which is very important for a person like me who was once very reluctant about having to see a doctor. He genuinely cares about my health and well-being, and I love the fact that his staff is warm and friendly, too. Going to his office makes me feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone--it's an experience that is so rare that I almost want to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming, because this fantastic treatment can't be real, who does this? This is the way all doctors should be. On my future visits, Dr. Van Reken always remembers important issues I might have forgotten, because he keeps extensive notes. Again, it makes me say, who does this? I referred a couple of friends to him and found out they were keeping him a secret--he had already been their doctor for several years. But that's what took me so long to Yelp about him. When you find a physician this incredible, you want to keep him all to yourself. Somebody on here said something about the doctor pill pushing, but please! In the winter months I get depressed and was told by other doctors in the past that it may be because I have Seasonal Affective Disorder also know as SAD. For years, I went to doctors who gave me NO prescription options to address my issue. I hate taking medication, and that seems to run in my family, because my mother, sisters, and adult nieces and nephews feel the same. However, Dr. Van Reken gave me prescription options to treat my condition, told me the pros and cons of the medications, and let me decide for myself. I decided to try the medication and it worked! I no longer have to face the winter feeling blue. I only wish my previous doctors had done this, because then I wouldn't have suffered for so many years. Dr. Van Reken also has a Medspa on the premises, which had me a little worried that he would stop practicing medicine and I'd lose the best doctor I've ever had. But fortunately, he's able to do it all, and I've even had my acne treated with the Matrix laser with great results. I love his new offices in Reno on Foothill Rd. off of S. Meadow's. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Van Reken for almost 2 years now. The doctor is thorough, intelligent, knowledgeable and the staff competent and helpful.
