The last time we attended the event we paid to park in the city with the Way app which double charged us, leaving us paying over a hundred dollars to park on the weekend, plus there were not spots near the event so we had to walk several blocks with luggage, so we wanted to try something new. We loved that parking is free on the weekend so it cost us six bucks for parking from friday afternoon to sunday afternoon. and $5.50 each way per person for our transit fare. once we figured out the clipper card app and the bart app we were good to go. I was a bit worried to leave our vehicle here for a few days but all was well on our return. Am excited to use this for transit to the airport in the future and maybe avoid all the traffic on the 80 as well as pay less for airport parking.

In my opinion, one of the safest BART stations in the Bay Area…read more A few years ago, we got off from this station mistaking it for El Cerrito Del Norte station. What'd did I know? I'm from DC (Daly City) and wasn't familiar with the East Bay BART stations; especially two stations with identical sounding names. However, it was a fortuitous mistake as it's in a fairly safe neighborhood with a strip mall directly across the station. There's also a good number of underrated places to eat in the area. It doesn't have a huge parking lot, or even a huge parking structure like some stations, but it's adequate enough for the area and it's easy to navigate in and out off. It has a very secluded and intimate feel to it. I also like the fact that the rails are elevated above ground so you can view the surrounding neighborhoods and area. It makes one's commute much more pleasant if you look out the windows and see the sunrise or sunset on any given day. Structurally speaking, its minimal, simple design doesn't stand out. However, the plum trees planted in the parking lot separates it from the rest. Especially when the flowers bloom in late winter. They almost rival the Cherry Blossom trees when it comes to beauty.

Casual Carpool is kind of like hitchhiking... but in a more organized way.... a great $-saver!…read more How it works is that there's a designated spot where drivers pick up passengers to go over the bridge to SF.... 2 different drop-off locations: Civic Center and Downtown SF. It's mutual benefit for driver and passenger, since once you have 3 in a car, you can go into the carpool lane and not have to pay toll either. Read more about locations and crazy etiquette on this site http://www.ridenow.org/carpool/what.htm Basically I need to get to work from Berkeley to SF. I COULD pay 3.70 for the BART, $4.00 for the Transbay, or get a car... but being as cheap as I am and also not making enough $, I choose Casual Carpool. Everyday there is a new adventure. Like a deck of cards, you never know what you're going to get. One day it could be a shiny BMW with a little girl in the backseat belting out the entire disney soundtrack and the next day it might be a dumpy van surrounded with electronics and non-working seatbelts . Luckily, that only happened to me once. I had a couple of tailgating/speeding drivers too.. but for a free ride, whaddya expect?? Overall, I recommend casual carpool. As a petite female, I feel no danger because there's at least 3 in the car.. and you can always pass a car if you don't feel safe ... TRUST YOUR INTUITIONS, WOMEN!

Casual Carpool's a great option for me and my commute. Might not be for all folks, and it's…read moredefinitely worth understanding the tradeoffs. The basics for casual carpool are described here well: http://www.ridenow.org/carpool/ Pickup runs from ~ 6am (cars are sparse) until 10am. There's generally a line of folks between 8:20 and 9:20, and/or a line of cars. I've taken the line that drops off at Fremont and Mission for a few months now. I generally prefer it to riding BART, here are a couple tradeoffs and notes: - Carpool is cheaper. I rely on the driver to ask for donations, and that happens about once every two weeks. - The quality of the ride is comparable. I'm always guaranteed a seat. Granted, some cars are super-small, sometimes a seat will be covered in dog hair, etc.. On average, my ride in is as about as comfortable as a seated BART trip. I was once in a car that had mechanical issues on the highway, but that's better than my average with BART - The drop-off is a longer walk to work for me than the BART station. On rainy days I usually pop into BART - Total commute time for me is a bit faster with carpool (by a couple minutes, it's not vastly quicker) - Riders and other passengers are polite for the most part. The worst thing I've seen in the past few months was a driver trying to flirt with a passenger, but that ended pretty quickly - The drive is nicer than the BART trip. The jaunt along 80 is on the water, and the bridge trip always gives great views, even when it's super-foggy. The route is also mobile connectivity-friendly (whereas on BART I only get connectivity in the SF stations) - The casual carpool lines may seem long, but I don't think I've ever waited more than ten minutes - BART's definitely less intimate. If there's a character in your BART car, it's usually not a problem for me. If your carpool driver is a character, you just have to smile and nod politely for 20 minutes. The plus is I will get in a car with someone I know every now and then, and that's always pleasant So, choose your poison. Casual Carpool gets four stars for me. It's commuting, so I'm never going to love it, but this is a favorable alternative for me.

As a 9th grader, I always took BART to Berkeley for high school…read more I never felt unsafe as a kid, probably more to do with that whole "ignorance is bliss" thing people talk about. Fast forward to today, this is one of the two stops that I park at when I'm going to San Francisco via BART. If certain family members are going to San Francisco, then we park and take BART from El Cerrito Del Norte station to our destination. If certain other family members are going with us we park and take another station on the other side of the line. I wouldn't necessarily recommend using this station late at night if you are alone as it can be a little unsafe on certain random nights. During the day I would say this station is relatively safe or if you are with a group, I would say the station is pretty safe. As with many stations outside of San Francisco and Oakland, parking is plentiful at Del Norte. Though you do have to pay for parking during work hours. Overall I say this is a pretty decent BART station as long as you're careful and aware of your surroundings, you should be okay.

Please note the construction going on skews my view and rating of the Downtown Berkeley BART…read morestation. I love this BART station, even with all the construction going on and the renovations being completed. The ease of access points to the fare gates and station platform are amazing and plentiful, which adds to the best thing about this specific station. I am unsure of what the finished above ground portion of the station will be like, but the above ground portion was due for an upgrade. The fact it brings you street level into the heart of Downtown Berkeley is perfect for those living, residing or going to school at the university. The current access point closures are pretty inconvenient and force you into one of two that are open. Station / fare gate level of the station is confusing for those not familiar with the construction and the out of service access points to street level. The renovations being completed on this level hopefully will allow a more mainstream and simplified ability to access fare gates and getting down to platform level. Right now there is an access point on the Allston & Shattuck side of the station that has fare gates that only accept Clipper Cards for entering into the station, yet anyone can use it to exit. Train platform level allows access to both trains heading to Richmond from Track 1 and from Track 2 Daly City (including all of downtown SF stops) during heavily trafficked hours and also to South Fremont / Warm Springs at anytime of the day. The one aspect to keep in your head is that during commute hours trains tend to be 7-9 car trains and you can board most anywhere on the platform and yet outside commute hours trains tend to be 4 - 6 car trains that need to be boarded at the Center of the platform. I've noticed most people at this station congregate and board the train in the middle and rear cars of most trains, to get a less cramped train and a chance at a seat you might want to be waiting and board the forward cars, especially the pilot car of each train. Overall this is a great station that serves its purpose of easy and simple access to Downtown Berkeley and all it has to offer. Once the renovations and the upgrades to the street level and fare gate levels of the station are completed I bet that this will be one magnificent station once again!

I am not alone either, as others have praised it for its Brutalism. The style is not one I favor generally. The Embarcadero, which isn't even pure Brutalism, displays its flaws. It is deliberately off putting and inspiring of human distress. Or if not intentional then with reckless disregard of the needs of most persons for an assurance they are welcomed and valued. The architectural school, however, is enjoying a renaissance because of how it photographs. The massed concrete and simple forms look great and even profound rendered as social media squares the size of thumbnails. The discipline is evident. The John Wick like commitment to a vision more or less indifferent to emotional yearnings for a sense of community.
