Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

Terrible food, even worse service. I know that it is a…read moretex-mex place and that the food is going to be in no way authentic Mexican but even for tex-mex food it is terrible. Fish tacos are just fish fingers, everything is served with pale looking beans and bright orange rice. The service is shocking too, had to wait for a whole table of 12 to get their mains even though we ordered first because we ordered an entré? Waitresses rude and food way to overpriced. There are much better places to eat in Aspendale so save your pennies and go anywhere else.

Phoenix has an abundance of amazing Mexican restaurants, so my standards are very high when it comes to Mexican food...and sadly Nachos fails to meet those standards, as far as the food is concerned. We had the nachos for an entree, I had the fish tacos and my wife had the taco combo. Unfortunately all I can give a pass to was the rice that accompanied our mains. The rice was well prepared, tasty and authentic in flavour. I won't pile on regarding the rest, as none of it was bad per se, it just wasn't real Mexican food. I do compliment them on their variety of Mexican beer and Tequila. Do yourself a favour and pass on the Corona, only penche turistas drink Corona. Grab yourself a Pacifico, a Tecate, or better yet a Negra Modelo. If you haven't experienced authentic Mexican food before, then there's no reason you won't like Nachos Cantina. The food, atmosphere and service are all good. But if you've had real Mexican you may want to skip this place, as it will leave you wanting.

I've been to Mexico, it doesn't look like this! There are plenty of Mexican places that don't do this of course, unfortunately Montezuma's isn't one of them. We came here for a friend's birthday and had a table of twelve. Our table barely even fit into the restaurant and a couple of times people had to get up out of their seats just to let people get by us. If a table near ours was being attended to by a waitress you couldn't get to your seat. Someone was going to be a little late, which seemed to annoy the staff off immensely. There were spare tables, so it wasn't like we were taking up seats by them being late, but several times they tried to come over and take their seats away, despite them only being a few minutes late. Not that there was actually comfortable space around our tables for twelve anyway... The food came out quite quickly after we ordered, and as always, Leisha T's vegetarian meal was the very last to come out. A waiter actually had to ask if she'd ordered anything! I ordered some sort of taco combination, which was quite bland...I'm fairly certain there was chicken in there somewhere, but maybe not. Leisha T had a burrito that looked slopped onto the plate, just as bland as mine and mostly overcooked. The burrito was filled with some sort of indistinguishable vegetable, beans and rice. It was served with more beans and more rice on the side. It's a "family restaurant" so I weren't expecting a five star meal, but it was still quite disappointing and we won't be hurrying back.

But after visiting Amor Mexico on a particularly lonely night, I am very happy to report that the warm and welcoming staff (not to mention the yummy food and cosy atmosphere) prompted a return visit a week later. And although the staff were different, the way they made me feel genuinely welcome and better still, appreciated for my choice to dine with them, was exactly the same as the first time. The restaurant was quite busy the first night and apart from the volume of the two large tables celebrating birthdays (they weren't that loud - I'm just a grumpy old man!) the service was equally as wonderful as that of the second occasion when there were only 4 or 5 tables of two dining. I ordered different drinks and meals each time and everything was delicious and reasonably generous in size adding good value for money to the list of positives of this place. If you or you and your friends/family are ever in Forest Hill - or within 20kms of Forest Hill - and feel like some yummy Mexican and great hospitality, drop in to Amor Mexico. PS. I talked with the owner on my second visit and was informed it has been a Mexican restaurant for 30 years and hasn't changed hands on the last 15 - which I guess is testimony to my very positive review.

Located on 50 Rose Street in Fitzroy, the store's close proximity to the Rose Street Artist Market is a boon to it's existence. Sharing a space with Mottanai Vintage Cycle keeps things interesting. Perusing vintage bikes while waiting for your meal puts an ironic spin on things, given that many people in India ride old and rusty bikes too. The furniture is albeit low, but well put together. Old milk crates double up as tables while short stools dot the space in abundance. My friend and I shared 2 Dosas, one filled with masala potatoes and the other filled with smokey eggplant. The crisp dough made of fermented rice and lentil batter had a hint of acidity to it. Also, there are lentil poppers which make for a good snack. That being said, the star of the show is the wide range of chutneys. I would recommend getting the hot chili one if you are not afraid of pain. At this price point ($9), these guys are over-providing. The treats are both vegan and gluten-free too. What are you waiting for?

For those not in the know dosas are very thin crepes traditionally filled with spiced potato. Overdosa's menu is simple offering potato masala, spiced pumpkin or eggplant filling. Your dosa also comes with either a coconut or hot chilli chutney. You can also order poppers which are delicious fried lentil balls. We had the potato masala and the poppers with coconut chutney. I'm no expert but my companion who is Indian rated them very highly. They are hot fast and delicious. He devoured the poppers so quickly I only managed a couple. All the options here are vegan and although I am a sworn carnivore I can say that it was so tasty it didn't matter. The guys are super friendly and really keen to hear what you think of their food and have a chat. They will be at the Evelyn on Brunswick st over Anzac weekend and then they fly to India to spend a few months collecting recipes to expand their offerings and possibly open a restaurant. If you are in the mood for Indian I highly recommend checking them out.
