Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

I brought corn & flour tortillas all the way from Texas to make tacos for a friend. I was lamenting…read morethe fact that I wished I could get fresh tortillas in Melbourne and my friend told me he heard there was a tortilla factory in Melbourne. I went the very next day to check out La Tortilleria and I was very pleasantly surprised! I reviewed the entire menu in greater detail than I probably should have and decided on the Chilaquiles. Melbourne is a long way from Mexico, but I read some yelp reviews and saw photos that looked authentic! I had read some reviews that these "nachos" were very soggy, but to my surprise they were just as they should be and we're very authentic to South Texas! To describe these as "nachos" is not accurate! They are dipped in a red sauce for flavor and served perfectly. I had the Chilaquiles with chicken and they were really excellent and I highly them. There was not even a tiny use morsel of these left on the plate! In fact, I was so very impressed with the authentic flavor & taste, I bought 7 tacos, guacamole and chips, pico de gallo and chips to take to some friends. Everything was pretty authentic to my well-trained Tex Mex palate and I certainly will be back! I even bought two packs of corn tortillas to try to make some Mexican dishes while staying at my friends in Melbourne! Friends loved the "take out" tacos & chips, guacamole & pico!

Trippy Taco Southside is the offshoot location of Trippy Taco in Collingwood, which has enjoyed a…read morelong-standing reputation for delicious, inexpensive vegetarian Mexican food. This location (the St Kilda one) is a lot newer, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But they pretty much share the same menu and ingredients as the Collingwood location, and I wasn't disappointed. I had the tofu asada burrito (made vegan) and my boyfriend had the special quesadilla. We also shared chips and guacamole. Both of us enjoyed our meals. Most of the menu items can be made vegan (including their desserts!) The St Kilda location feels larger than the Collingwood one. The Collingwood one has more of a "cozy, cluttered and cheerful" vibe. But the ambience in St Kilda is still nice, with the same brightly colored Mexican decor. It just somehow feels more contrived and trendy than the decor at the Collingwood one. But eh, I guess that's how a lot of places are in St Kilda. The St Kilda location also has a much larger outdoor space than the Collingwood one, with quite a few tables (including a long one that seats 10+) out front. We sat outside because it was a beautiful day. They have these adorable cushions to sit on that look like giant limes. Like, seriously, I wanted to steal one, they were so cute. (I didn't.) We got there fairly early for dinner time (around 5:30) and the place was pretty quiet, with fast and efficient service, but by the time we left it was starting to fill up. This location is also a bit more boozy than the Collingwood one, which makes sense given the St Kilda crowd. They're fully licensed and had $14 margaritas and mojitos on the menu. Even if you're not coming to Trippy Taco to eat, it would be a nice place to have a few drinks in the sun. I should add that nothing about Trippy Taco is "authentic" Mexican food, but then again I'm from Texas and have lived in Oz long enough to know that nothing here is really authentic Mexican food. If you're from Mexico or the southern U.S., just come here knowing that flavors will not be authentic, and hopefully your expectations won't be set too high. For unauthentic vegetarian Mexican food, though, it's definitely tasty and worth a visit :)
