Now, I was techy as a teased snake, when this damn heat started rollin' in my ranch. Being an alfalfa desperado, I'm all about my chickens, although they ain't laying no hen fruit just yet. The tomaters are growing like weeds. There's lots of galnippers here, always bitin' my legs. I'm out in the pasture, wrangling all my chickens, tending to the pups, and making sure there ain't no coyotes after my little yolk making folks! Now, I ain't no regular sage hen. I'll make a ruckus out of nuthin, but I love to go to Callanhan's for all my farming needs. I can get a fifty dog gone pound of chicken feed for less than twelve bucks! And the folks over at Callahans always point me in the right direction. They ain't at all crooked as a snake in a cactus patch. They give great advice, and really know their stuff. Lots of baby chicks, dog food, cowboy hats, and just good ol' down home Texas stuff. You can even get cast iron, for when you're the bean master for the night. All in all, I love this place. My dad had a cowboy hat made 40 years ago when he was 60 pounds lighter, now that he wanted to wear it again, he took it to Callahan's to have it resized. The lady in the hat department fixed it while he waited, was so patient, and did a fantastic job. My dad called me immediately afterwards to rave about how awesome his hat and the store were for him. He couldn't stop talking about how great the store was, but specifically the hat department. If you're in Austin, check this store out! read more

I fell in love with Callahan's after my first visit. They had everything I needed for my backyard chicken care including the chickens. I already had some chickens from another source and they were healthy. I purchased 3 from Callahan's to add. I kept them separate for a while and merged them in later. They all turned out to be diseased and I learned that I now had lice that I had to deal with that I did not have before. The first, a buff oprington we believe died from merek's. We nursed her after a stroke but she did not make it. The second an Americana developed crooked beak which is genetic and just couldn't feed herself enough we believe. The third, an RIR, started showing what appeared to be tumors. We took her into the vet in fear of the rest of the flock and she died that day. The vet wanted to necropsy so we allowed and it turns out she had avian leukosis. Now I have to be concerned about contamination to my entire flock and am unable to trade chickens. I used to feel bad that internet warehouses were undercutting brick and mortar stores like Callahan's- until today. I was looking for a women's straw cowboy hat with a tie underneath to keep it on when it's windy. Simple enough, right? Their website boasts "the best hat selection in Texas" or something similar, and when I arrived, they had exactly two kinds of hats like this, only one of which was in my size, and the straw on top was already falling apart. There were 4 of the other kind of hat, all too big. Ok fine no big deal, I'll ask for help. I had seen a woman who looked like she worked there chatting with another woman, maybe two, so I figured she was helping someone and I'd wait. I did a few loops through the dept and came back around, and flagged her down, even though she was still chatting. Turns out all three women were employees, none had offered to help me, and when I did ask if there were any hats similar in the store or the back, I was met with an attitude. "That's all we have." Thanks. So you don't have very many hats, and you don't have customer service. Why did I waste an hour driving here and back. read more

This place makes you feel like you're in a old time movie. The stuff they offer is unique and great for this urban farm girl. Not only can you get feed for your animals, but you can buy ducks, goats, baby pigs and chickens there. I love playing with the animals outside. You can grab your pet vaccinations too. The staff is always inviting and very knowledgable. I love there metal tubs for my garden plants. They have just about everything farm and garden related. read more

I buy a lot of stuff here. My kitchen appliances were purchased here as well as the halter I am wearing in my picture. Not everybody carries formal black halters in my size (draft horse), ya know. The place is kinda divided into kitchen, clothing, hardware, farm/garden tools, tack, livestock stuff and feed. I go here unless I need something that has to come from Tractor Supply, which is much farther away. If you live in Austin and have never been, you really should go and wander around for a while, even if nobody in your family eats hay. They have great apple horse cookies, too. read more

I buy organic chicken feed at Callahans and have been happy with that. About a month ago, I bought nine Production Reds from Callahans; eight pullets, one rooster. Half their beeks were gone...didn't like that. Had them for about a week and they started getting sick. Went back to Callahans and complained about having just bought all these chickens and some now sick. Their response: we have antibiotics. Two died. Two were quite sick and seemed to be perking up and now I'm not sure. One that looked pretty good is now starting to sneeze, even after being on antibiotics for two weeks. Went back a couple days ago and again mentioned buying sick birds. I wasn't happy with the answer, "oh, its in the air this year". Needless to say, I will never buy another chicken there. Recently I have stopped in and done some feed shopping as well as some Christmas shopping. I bought 8 young hens and a rooster there too! The hay was fresh - they store it in their feed warehouse ( thats where the chickens are too!) I got lots of fun gifts for friends and even found myself the coolest pair of boots - Roper Rockstars. Overall this is a cool place, but the reason that we went there is to buy bird seed. Specifically Black oil sunflower seed. Terrible. The seed is not fit for birds. The birds would not touch it! I swear to god. We had to take it down and buy seed elsewhere. They should evaluate the supplier and fire them if they can't get them better seed. The seed was full of worms and weevils. It was going rancid. It seemed old. Seriously.....they need to get better supplies of seed. I will never buy it from them again. This Saturday, it made my day to walk into this store. Vibrant place and great things on the shelves to browse- for the garden and home. I was greeted with live music from a band called the Starlite Wranglers, pot-bellies to pet, plants to buy outside, and jam from Common Sense Farming out in Leander. I went home happy with everything except the pig (no space)! I think I spoke with the owner/manager who was by the door; he was all about the customer service. Overall a super experience. read more

My whole family loves to go to Callahan's General Store. The kids actually beg to go because we always seem to walk out of there with an irresistibly cute bunny or more recently, a few chicks for the ranch. I might just add, all their pets are still alive and quite healthy, can't say the same for for Pets Mart or Pet Co animals. The same friendly cowboy always greets us at the door and remembers who we are. A true Texan experience for the out of town company to visit. Please consider shopping for merchandise or feed here before heading off to the big box stores like Hope Depot. This place is what "keep Austin weird" is all about. I haven't had the same negative experiences with chickens that other have noted here. We purchased a dozen Rhode Island Reds and with the exception of two duking it out to the death, they're all alive and healthy. After our chicken battle, we returned to buy a few more. While there, we told the guy that one of the dead chickens was a rooster, and since they guarantee pullets, they replaced the rooster for free. So we left with four Black Plymouth Rocks, which are vibrant and growing strong. I can understand them not guaranteeing the health of the birds because they don't know what conditions you'll put them in. Having said that, though, I've dealt with mail order companies that do guarantee their health and will replace dead birds within 72 hours. However, if our experience is any indication, the odds of getting dead or dying birds in the mail is much higher than buying them in person. We've purchased birds by mail, in Agways where we used to live and now at Callahan's and Callahan's has only sold us quality birds. When dealing with chickens, remember that you're dealing with livestock, not pure-bred dogs. If you keep them as pets, just remember what a dairy farmer friend of mine told me, "When you deal with livestock, you're dealing with heartbeats" and heart beats can and will stop, so be ready to deal with sickness and death in your flock because it's simply part of the game when you decide to raise chickens. read more

I did ask to speak to the manager and was relieved to be helped and assured the problem would be resolved appropriately. Wow. Well, I ventured into Callahan's yesterday. Wasn't the first time I'd been there, and I think it's a generally cool place. Have found some things there I couldn't find elsewhere. But this time, well, I am utterly shocked. I went in search of some cast iron cookware. Been looking online and found some elsewhere but heard Callahan's had a good selection and decided to check it out. Well, they have it all right, pretty good selection. But the prices?!? Egad. Just for one example, they had an 8" skillet priced at $17.95. The identical item sells at Academy for $9.99. That's nearly double! Prices on everything else were also nearly and in some cases even more than double Academy's prices and at some other retailers as well. After seeing that, I felt sick. I'd hoped to find a few other things as well, but seeing those prices just took the wind out of my sails. Golly, do they really have to pad their prices by that much?? What a darn shame. I don't think I'll be back to Callahan's anymore. read more

Double check the price of whatever you are buying to ensure the labeled price on the floor is what you are charged at the register. Twice now, once to a friend and today, with me, we were overcharged for feed products. Today I went in for wild bird food and saw a posted price of $18.50 for a 40# bag. I went to the register, not paying particular attention to what was rung up and paid for the feed with my credit card. As I walked away, I noticed that I had been charged $21.00 for the bird food. I went back to the feed section to double check the price, which was indeed $18.50. I brought it to the attention of the cashier and she stated, "Oh those prices are not right". SAY WHAT?? Well, that was the exact reason I purchased the food, was for the less expensive price than a competitor. The manager happened to walk by and the cashier asked him about the pricing, and he stated, "The computer price was right". I protested the practice of mislabeling product prices and charging more at the register. The guy was actually rude and raised his voice, as if I had done something wrong! I demanded, and received, an immediate refund to my credit card. After leaving, I called a friend and told him of the incident. He related having the same exact issue with some feed corn he wanted to purchase a few weeks back. I have done business with Callhans since they originally opened and have never experienced the utter rudeness and lack of concern for the customer, as I did today. The store should have honored the posted price of their product. They just lost my patronage. read more

I have been shopping here for over 20 years and until recently was still going there even though I no longer live in Austin. Never again. They lost a customer of two decades. Like many I have taken up the hobby of urban chicken raising. In years past I have been going to them for new chicks to increase my flock and replace birds that have died. This year I have made the two hour drive there and back four times and returned empty handed. Its always you should call first. (I do and there is no answer.) Come back Tuesday. (We didn't get a full shipment.) Come back next Tuesday. I call first. They say we got this breed in and this one but somehow managed to be sold out in just a few hours by the time I got there. How hard is it to order enough product to last more than four hours? I have been in retail management a long time and if i was this bad about replenishing my inventory on a regular basis and not having enough product for my customers I would have been out of a job a long time ago. You can't consistently upset customers and expect them to go back. I sure won't. read more

My boyfriend and I are from a small town in East Texas and every once in a while we just want to go somewhere that isn't "hip." What I was searching for was simple enough, a glass gallon jar, but being a little "city worn" I knew that going to Ikea just would not suffice. Callahan's has a friendly staff, and laid-back atmosphere and all things practical. They carry pet supplies (not just for livestock, but for cats and dogs) and I even saw a couple of dogs inside, though it slightly worried me considering they also carry baby chicks. There are also kitchy Texas themed items available such as cowboy oven mitts and armadillo Christmas ornaments. I appreciated their seed department and their instructional books and also the fact that they carried a huge collection of gardening gloves. Prices are fairly reasonable, though I did think a few things were overpriced. Give this place a visit if you have an evening free and want a nice breath of fresh, relaxing air. read more

Callahan's is simply awesome. We had an awful infestation of bed bugs last year in our old apartment. I still don't know exactly how we got them, but the pest control company the complex hired were total morons and didn't know what they were doing. They wouldn't allow us to hire our own pest control company, so we took matters into our own hands (not that I advocate doing this, because true pest control experts are your best defense against those damn bloodsuckers!). Callahan's had EVERYTHING I needed to fight the bugs. The main home improvement stores (Lowe's and Home Depot) had absolutely nothing. Callahan's had a wide array of sprays and powders to choose from and I wasn't disappointed. In addition to meticulous and thorough regular cleaning, encasing our mattresses in quality covers, we sprayed every 3 weeks with the stuff we bought at Callahan's and we were bug free in less than 6 weeks and they didn't come back! If you've battled bed bugs, then you know that's pretty fast to be rid of them. They are notoriously difficult to get rid of. I'm so glad we moved out of that place and we've been bug free for almost a year now. Callahan's staff is very knowledgeable and polite. I love coming to Callahan's just to browse. You never know what you might find! It's unlike any other store in Austin with the variety of goods available...truly an old fashioned General Store for the days of yore! read more

Callahan's rocks!! What a wonderful array of products in one place!! Staff is very nice and helpful. They will special order things for you. Great prices. After a bad experience at Tomlinson's, my brother recommended Callahan's to me again. He has been trading with them ever since they opened. I have gone there numerous times in the past and had a great time looking at everything and buying my dog food, etc. Callahan's is about ten miles from me while Tomlinson's is about three miles from me, but I choose to be treated nicely instead of badly so I am going to give my $1000+ yearly purchase of products to Callahan's. read more

They have a little bit of everything and is good place to stop if you have some time to kill before heading to the airport. I recently bought several chickens from this store. Within a few days i noticed that one has an eye infection, all of my others have diarrhea and I even lost a chicken last night. we called Callahans and asked them about this and their general manager started making jokes saying that "maybe space debri fell from the sky and got all of your chickens sick". I dont know how most people treat their chickens, but I happen to be very fond of mine and I dont appreciate Callahans making fun of my dying chickens!!
