Callahan's may have just lost a twenty year customer over a pair of gloves worth less than $20. I tried on a pair of work gloves and thought they fit so I bought them. Got home, put them on and rode my motorcycle around the block once. Fingers were too long and were catching on my mirror so I took them back to exchange for a smaller pair. Instead of just exchanging them they had to be inspected by this lady there who said they were dirty. They were not. They didn't look any different than the smaller pair I pulled to exchange for and definitely didn't have anything on them that couldn't be wiped off with a cloth. I literally only wore them once around the block. They were definitely not too dirty to pop a tag on and put back on the rack for sale. I would buy them but was told they couldn't be sold. They were perfectly fine. Honestly, it wasn't the fussing over a simple exchange that sealed the deal. People talk about not going to "big box" stores and supporting local businesses but if I took a pair of gloves back to a big box store to exchange they would simply do so without making me feel like I'm somehow doing something wrong or laying a guilt trip on me over a $20 pair of gloves. To lay the guilt on thick the lady I was talking to told me I could keep both pair of gloves because she couldn't sell them. They were fine to tag, hang back up, and sell. I spent my entire childhood working in my Grandma's feed store and a good part of my adult life. I know what people will or will not buy. After the exchange I needed a number of things for my shop so I can work better at night. Instead, I left and went to a big box store where I've never had someone make me feel like I was trying to get something over on them because of a simple exchange. read more

Just want to say thanks to this amazing store. I bought chickens from them a few months ago and they have gone out of their way with advice and assistance. I had one get start to get a respiratory thing today after being completely healthy last night and no vets could see her. They let me bring her in and Curtis took a look at her and made a possible diagnosis and recommended medication. I'm so grateful for a store that treats customers like neighbors. read more

Firstly, the staff of the store have been very friendly and helpful overall. I have no complaints about the staff. Secondly, all my complaints are about the chickens, livestock and feed so if you are not buying those things you can skip this. The chickens (pullets) that we bought were in a small very dirty and crowded cage in the dark corner of the livestock area. I should have guessed something would be wrong when I was being helped I was told "We sell antibiotics too". I bought three hens (Princess Chick Lips, Mistress Cluck and Queen Rayna are the names). Mistress Cluck came down with a nasty respiratory infection about the 2nd day. We had a new coop so this could not have been reinfection from a used coop. We went back to Callahan's and bought antibiotics and she has gotten better but is still smallish and a slight bit mangy looking. Queen Rayna now has swollen eyes and could possibly need to be culled (which really just means killed). One chicken so far has not been sick. This has been very stressful and disconcerting. They are also all covered in lice and mites which could only have come from Callahan's since this was a brand new environment with no previous chickens. The way the livestock were kept is also sad and depressing. Crowded, dirty conditions and watching a worker grab a rooster was very brutal. They also clip the beaks of the grown chickens so they don't peck each other to death. How about you just improve their living conditions so they won't want to peck each other? I don't like being sold sick animals that will then need to be killed. There is no accountability and it is bad business overall. Their feed is infested with weevils. Yuggg. I lifted the bag into my trunk and they poured out onto my hand and car. I quickly returned and it bought a plastic bag full but will now go elsewhere for my chicken needs. P.S. I have a 5 year old daughter that helped name the chickens and it has been difficult for her to watch the chickens get sick with swollen pus filled eyes since we brought them home. She has not had a chance to really enjoy them because of all the sickness. I would suggest anyone considering buying chickens for an urban coop NOT BUY FROM Callahan's. Find an independent farm and really check out the chicken. Look under wings and along neck for mites or lice. Smell the chick's face as most infections make the chicken smell like rotting garbage. this is the coolest place ever to just look around. they have everything from clothes, tack and regular hardware stuff to appliances right out of the 1940s but brand spanking new. they have absolutely positively everything under the sun and are so charming in helping you find it all. if you're going to the airport, you're going to drive right past it. leave a little early and take a look. it's a time machine trip to what austin was 50 years ago. check it out! read more

I'm a 5th generation native Texan, and this place?! This place is one of the most Texas-y places I've ever stepped foot in. I could spend HOURS in Callahan's just looking around at stuff. I mean, they've got everything from seeds and scythe handles to books on in-utero horses to meat grinders to Christmas ornaments. It's mind-boggling, but in a good way. I mean, the hand soap selection alone is worth the drive. This place--and the people who work and shop there--make me happy and proud of my Texas roots. read more

If you want to start your own urban/suburban Austin chicken flock, Callahan's is the place to go. Not only do they have live chicks, they have feeders, water dispensers, chick starter feed, cages and bedding to start your chicks off well. The selection of chicks varies from week to week, so if you want certain breeds, call ahead to find out what they have. They typically have common breeds like Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks on hand at all times, but at times they have more unusual breeds like Ameraucanas, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Brabanters (which are quite rare). The chick cages all have pictures attached to them of the chicks as adults, so you can see what they will grow up to look like. They also note chicks as pullet, rooster or straight-run. If you don't know what straight-run means, it means chicks that haven't been separated out into male and female. Chicks are extremely hard to differentiate by gender, and it has to be done by professionals, so straight-run basically means "you get what you get." If you don't want roosters, make sure to get your chicks from the pullet-only trays! (Note: you don't need roosters for hens to lay eggs.) The lady who staffs the chick room is very helpful and will answer any questions you may have, like what color eggs certain breeds lay, and so on. She also takes good care to package your chicks up in a nice sturdy box for transport home. Callahan's is also the closest place to central Austin that I know of to get bales of hay. Hay is a great for keeping your chicken coop clean and non-muddy after your chickens have scratched away all the grass. The only thing that Callahan's doesn't have is organic adult laying hen feed. For that, you have to go to Buck Moore at 5237 North Lamar near North Loop. I feed my chickens organic feed from Buck Moore and supplement with bulk flax seed from Central Market and veg scraps, and they do great with that. read more

After many months of reading every book I could get my hands on about raising chickens, I finally took the plunge. I walked into callahan's grinning from ear to ear, so excited about the purchas I was about to make. I found the room with all the ducks, rabbits and chicks and began to read all the tags describing what breed each chicken was. I got a little nervous when none of the names matched the breeds I had decided would be good for me, a first time chicken owner. The lady in the room who I thought could help me, looked at me like she wished I would go away and it took about 20 minutes before I could even get her attenetion, she helped everyone that came in after me, but kept her back to me as much as possible like she thought I would just disappear if she ignored me long enough. When I finally did got her attention, she answered all of my questions with "It doesn't matter". Wow, what service. I finally just picked out two breeds and she fished them out with no concern whether I might have wanted to pick out the ones I wanted. I bit my tongue and took my girls home. Two weeks later, I returned with more questions about my chickens, to make a long story short, once again, I got the cold shoulder and left knowing no more than I did before. I will not return to callahan's, they are cold and unfriendly. I did however find a great alternative recently, Buck More feed store, I will be writing a stellar review about them next. This store is definitely as advertised - a true general store! It has everything you could possibly be looking for. Last time we saw some cool benches we'd love to get, cowboy hats, stuff for plumbing, seeds for gardening, and mason jars for canning. We ended up leaving with some new bones for our pup to chew on and his last Puppy Shot. Also the little board out front has some cool stuff being avertised: ponies, peacocks, goats, tractors, hay, etc. The only detractor is the ladies at the checkout counter, they always look like theyd rather be somewhere else. No smiling faces, no Thanks!, just totally bleh. These ladies look like they hate their jobs. Which is funny, because the people working in other areas of the store are very pleasant, helpful, and seem to like their jobs. read more

I came to buy some purple horse reins and to my surprise I walked into a backwards twilight zone. Here at Callahan's they charge $28.99 for horse reins in a black or blue color. Then, no lie, they think its perfectly suitable to charge $38.99 for the same reins only in pink or purple. Of course I ask to speak to the manager who wasn't there but another Male employee comes to tell me its because their suppliers charge more therefore they have to. He liken the arrangement to car insurance companies that charge higher prices for cars painted red. I guess the only win here is that I walked away knowing that women ride faster and harder then men and unfortunately we have to pay extra for that. read more

I will not buy poultry here again. Last time I did I tried getting assurance in writing that the hens had foul pox vaccine. Several employees said I had to ask the manager but that they only took vaccinated birds. After visiting many days in a row and not being able to reach the Poultry Procurement Officer to get proof of vaccination, I reluctantly bought two, with promises that the hens were vaccinated for pox. Guess what? They currently have foul pox. Not to mention the smaller bird cages (pigeons, Roos) aren't kept very clean. Its also no picnic going to Callahan's as a lone female. "Are you sure I can't help you? Are you sure you don't need me to carry that? You mean you want to pick out your own chickens?" Excuse me for wandering out of the canning section (which is the most expensive one in town.) Seriously, Breed & Co. has better prices on canning jars. read more

I liked this place! I stopped here before taking a friend to the airport then came back after the airport to purchase guinea chicks (aka keets). They have a good cast-iron selection. They have gifts (great, because this is close to the airport!) Where's a plush armadillo when you need one? There was live music probably because it was a Saturday, when everyone was there. I loved the Giant Runt pigeons they had! This store reminds me a lot of Texas-themed Lehman's, but on a much smaller scale. Chick room! Very nice chick room! It's a separate room, out of the way of drafts and is kept at a warm, brooder temperature. Chicks are kept in racks with a running water system. Newborn chicks find water best when it drips, the noise is needed. A staff member was always in the room with the chicks ready to help, feeding and cleaning. Prices were reasonable and all the chicks I saw were healthy and vibrant. I'm under the impression that the bad chick ratings are from new chicken owners who live in the city and want some birds in their back yard. Chicks shouldn't be kept on wood shavings. The wood chip dust kicked up by active chicks aggravates their delicate respiratory systems. read more

Hiawatha! This truly is a General Store. I went there yesterday for the first time but had wanted to go for years but never had the chance. Everyone there is so extremely nice. They are all about the refreshing country hospitality. The parking lot was crowded and they had a horse adoption going on. There were horse advocates there that were amazing. We went there to get some needed supplies for our pets. The prices were great. They have a fun gift section, too. They of course sell dog food, items relative to livestock, etc, and there was an awesome 2 man band playing when we walked in and I loved that! The parking was a little tight but that is only telling me that this is a good place to go and be! Oh and yes, they let me take the BEAGLES in!!! I mean it really could not get much better! :) I give it all the stars because of the genuine GREAT energy in the air there, everyone's willingness to help the customers, their dog friendly mentality, and because they truly seem to be doing the right thing in that store :)!!! They have a wide selection of different brands and fits. It beats running around boutiques, and the prices are really affordable. Our last day in Austin after a weeklong wedding/vacation. So this is about the touristy-souvenir side mainly, and a hat quest. (Read other reviews about the functioning hardware/general store) Excellent service, repeatedly, as we meandered around. Tie-dyed Weird Austin t-shirt? Follow me! And here's the other "weird" t-shirts too! (We got 2) Need a Texas Ranger badge, not Marshall or Sheriff? Let me look in the back! Bingo! (We got pin & badge) (p.s. One lady actually stopped her phone conversation to assist me!) Alphabet steak branding iron? What letter? Just one letter? A lot of the entrance area is the kind of trinkets one might pick up at the last minute at the airport to take home. But it was a one-stop shop that fulfilled all the names on the list. And a whole lot more. But most of all this is another chapter in the ongoing saga of trying to find a reasonably priced size 8 hat. Full assortment of Stetsons and Resistols, straw and felt, modestly priced to 'who died and left you an oil well' priced. Driving this big headed city slicker around the department was a strapping young fella named JAVY. This guy not only knows what he's talking about, he listens to what your needs (wishes?) are. Although he was able to find 2 hats that actually fit well on my twin braided pumpkin sized noggin, they were both well out of my price range (one was truly a bargain too, with a $400 markdown). Alas, they were gorgeous hats. JAVY. made the experience so incredibly rewarding. He even offered to reshape a hat if I found one at another store. Killer service. Nice people. Unique place. Happy I saw their ad in The Austin Chronicle. read more

It's weird. This is such a fun place to waste some time, or if you are real cowboy or country bumpkin, actually get feed/animals/etc. Personally, I can find an excuse to shop wherever I go so I was checking out the clothes. They have a really good selection of true cowboy and outdoor wear. Everything was priced normally, but they have a large clearance section too. They've got other Texan trinkets too, so I think this place would be fun to take out-of-towners who like to imagine we all ride horses to school. Because the people at Callahan's might actually do that. And, um, I GOT TO MEET A BABY LAMB so my life is complete. They've got pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits etc. I'm an animal lover, so that part was super fun. read more

My baby daddy has 27 acres of land out 969. If it were not for Callahan's and the folks there with all their knowledge - all the animals on his land would be dead. Period. City folks just should not try to do the whole "I will have land with cattle and goats and chickens and horses" thing. It's just not safe. Perfect example: I come out to the land to get the kids and am walking towards everyone standing over something and can hear the disucssion: "Wow, I think it's an owl!" "No, some sort of hawk or eagle!" *these are adults, I must add at this point I come up to the crowd, look down and say, "Uh... guys - that' s a chicken. It's called a White Silky. Must have come over from the neighbor's land." Growing up a redneck in West Texas might have some perks, after all. Anyway... Mike and all at Callahan's will help any city slicker get all the information they need to have a prosperous animal population. Just don't let him know you feed your goat cookies or waffles or let the kids ride the bull and give him peanut butter sandwiches and bananas and apples, or that you give the horse birthday cake ... we shouldn't domesticate the animals. ;o) My bad. My dogs really like this store. So do my friends kids. For some reason, I always leave with a cool animal-themed toy or gameand some odd animal parts for the pups to chew. Great selection of hard to identify "natural" chew toys. Oh -- great selection of Christmas lights! I found a wonderful string of glowing plastic horses last year. Two paws up!! read more

Love this place! I've gotten everything from plumbing supplies, to chickens, to feed, to cast iron here. The prices are reasonable and the folks are friendly. I love how you can visit the livestock for sale, try on a hat or two, and find everything you need for backyard chickens in one place. I've shopped at Callaghan's for years. It's a good place to bring out of town guests for a unique experience. It's not a good place to purchase chickens or seek advice. I recently bought a property that already had chickens and needed some help. The chicken lady seemed annoyed she needed to end her personal conversation to answer my questions. While I was waiting for her to get off the phone I had a chance to really inspect the baby chicken's living conditions. NASTY! No wonder they are sick. The smell of ammonia was overwhelming. Almost all of the water containers were dirty and looked like they had not been changed in a while. Half of them had rusty wire sitting in the water to keep the birds from escaping. I felt so bad for them watching them drink dirty, rusty water I wanted to buy them all. Unfortunately, last year my husband bought chickens from Callaghan's. Half of them died and the rest infected my flock with a respiratory disease. Once she hung up she answered my questions. I've shopped here for 20 years but since I now have chickens I will find a new feed store that is clean and friendly. read more

Their price on Happy Frog potting soil is about 2/3 of what local nurseries sell it for. Construction on 183 is a bear right now, but the trek was worth the savings. People were very helpful with loading. I was tempted by their chicken coops, too, but sanity prevailed. read more

Beside the clothes area is a camping isle, plumbing, lighting & hardware. I really went to check out the chick area. New chicks come in Thursday afternoon and I hear they go fast. It's a cool place, with a very good selection on feed and livestock supplies, but it also seems a little like a tourist trap. Prices aren't awful, but definitely not good either. I was going to buy chicks there, but after taking a look at them I decided against it. And after reading some of the reviews here, that may have been a wise decision. Still, I didn't buy any, and didn't thoroughly inspect them, so I won't say much about their chicks. I think the staff is hit or miss. Once, I was helped by a guy who made me feel like I was bothering him with my questions, but helped by a woman on another trip, and she was great. read more

This is probably one of my favorite places in town and makes me feel like Im back home in east Texas. Curtis was the gentleman who assisted us and all our questions today. He was absolutely WONDERFUL about tending to us, as well several other people in English and Spanish. He knew so much about any and all products in his department. Laura was also very friendly in the hat section too and had really good hat shaping prices too. I will be back and recommend this place to any and all types of people. This may well be the coolest store in Austin--and Austin has some remarkable stores. Though Callahan's is obviously super successful and we can't spend a lot when we go, Mike will still personally help us. How many head honchos of a busy store do you know that will readily take time to talk to you about a $10 product or spend 20 mins digging through 4 crates (and who lets you in a backroom anyway?) to find the right sized inexpensive blanket you need for a growing colt? I could go on--staff help with $2 hardware, the most patient women on earth helping with work boots, people in the back who will load feed into (and around) anything, Mike's willingness to tell us the mill a particular feed comes from, young ladies at check out who'll tell you about a discount you didn't know you had ... . I really don't know how they do it. Tried to ask Mike about it once, and he just laughed and said you have to love what you do. If you've never been in a "general store", you'd be hard pressed to find something equivalent to Callahan's in most regions of the country. If you live around here and haven't been, you should go. Just for the experience of it. This place is like a living landmark. I'd say leave all forms of payment at home if you don't need anything at all, and don't have a strong will, but Callahan's is such a rarity, I'd really like to see it continue into the next generation. So instead, set aside a little time, bring a couple dollars (just in case), and walk the aisles. They have books, boots, clothing, seed, hardware, garden tools, chicks (as in the starter fowl-type), good quality equine and livestock feed, hay, supplements and medications, halters and lead ropes, good western saddles, dog supplies, cool vintage-styled appliances, dishware, cast iron, splatterware, all sorts of knicknacks, and more stuff than I can remember at this moment. Heck, we take our clipper blades there to be sharpened. P.S. We don't know anyone outside of shopping there, and haven't been asked for a review. We just like the place and the people. A mixed bag. I really want to support Callahans, and they have a lot of great local happenings...regularly there are breakfast foods and bands playing on the weekends, particularly lively in Spring. The chickens aren't well cared for, unfortunately, and I think this relates to the lack of knowledge of the staff, at least when I was there. The animals are stressed and, I think, not immunized, but I'm not sure of that...couldn't get the info out of the chick staff but she was busy and scattered. I won't buy animals here and it put me off the place, unfortunately; there are better choices for hens and small animals. Staff elsewhere in the place are always quick to help out, and get run ragged during busy weekends, I think. But for the most part are very friendly and helpful. For plants during spring, many large animal needs, and random hardware, and an overall friendly place, it's a good place to visit and prices are close to reasonable. read more

I hardly write many reviews but I couldn't let this go unsaid, Callahan's is a staple for Austin. Being born and raised here I see how much our city has changed and I could complain but I'll just take it with a grain. This store holds true to what it has always been, and the staff has that Texan attitude that makes you proud to call this place home, greeted with a smile and followed up by top notch customer service. I went in for a weed killer I found online to get my lawn back into shape, I normally buy online due to convenience but they didn't ship this chemical to Texas for whatever reason. Well as I was browsing for my product I was asked if I needed some help and before I knew it, I had more Help than I could hope for. The gentlemen was concerned about my lawn, what amount I would need to get the job done, saving me money by not exceeding my need, and wanted to follow up for fertilizing and restoring in September. If I can buy it at Callahan's, I'm taking the time out of my day to stop in. It has now been two weeks since my visit and the product has already Taken full effect and worked like a charm, grass is still fully intact but weeds are brown and dead. This is not a review I want to write! We've always loved stopping by Callahan's to see the animals and shop around the store. Today my two kids asked if we could stop in and see the animals. As we were looking I noticed a lethargic bunny in the cage. I notified one of the employees and asked them what they usually do and he replied they bring them to another cage to die. He grabbed the bunny and said he would wash it off first. As he was walking over to the sink I told him I have a friend that might be able to help nurse it back to health. The bunny had its eyes open, but seemed very overheated. He brought it to the sink and then not even 30 seconds later he laid the bunny dead in the cage. There's no way that bunny died without him doing it. I saw it 30 seconds before. I truly believe he snapped its neck. I'm sure in his mind he thought he was doing a service getting rid of a bunny they couldn't sell, but he didn't give it an opportunity to cool off or even see if it would perk up. I reported him to the manager and let them know I'd be reporting them. I called 311 and they sent someone to further investigate. Unfortunately I'm guessing this sort of thing happens regularly and I'm not sure it will ever stop. But if you do choose to go here please check the animals and report anything you feel isn't right to 311. read more

We have purchased both chicks and ducks from here and were pleased each time. The staff is helpful and ready with advice if you are a city girl like me! Our chicks were healthy and we raised them to be fantastic egg layers! That's really the only reason I can imagine going here over Home Depot though- the selection on other items is limited and more pricey. read more

I love this place for everything that it is, and I even love it for what it it isn't. It's a true as turnips country-style Texas General Store, complete with beef jerky and redneck mason jar wine cups. You know, life's necessities. It is not however, your price-competitive neighborhood big box store. Some things are impressively well-priced, for example: a 4 cubic ft bag of perlite for just under $25 after tax (you're welcome, gardeners!). Also, a three piece set of garden nippers and clippers for $16. I'll be calling up Callahan's from now on to price check on gardening supplies! And then there's all the over-priced random crap that's literally growing cobwebs in the corners of the store. I picked up a shabby chic wooden caddy that had cobwebs and (unintentional) stains in the bottom and it rang up for $15. I would have paid $5 Maybe some downward adjustments on the prices would help move some inventory? If you've never been to Callahan's, it's an experience not to be missed IMHO. If baby chicks and bunnies aren't on your shopping list, you'll at least probably pay an outrageous price for a bird feeder that your mom will absolutely adore.
