Great people and good wines! This a boutique style winery so you may pay a little bit more for the wines than you may be use to; bottles of wine average between 20 to 30 dollars a pop. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, especially in the evening when you watch the sun set over all the vines. The tasting room is busy and the outdoor patio gets full as well, but it's all part of the atmosphere. This a fun, lively, and very social vineyard. read more

Also, Kent and Lisa are so cool, they elevate the wine experience:) I have to say that this is hands down one of my favorite wineries in AZ, the other two are AZ Stronghold and Lightning Ridge. Kent Callaghan is such a laid back, chill guy but does he know his wine! My favorites here are the Petit Verdot, the Mourvedre, and the Back Lot and Anns. This is one of the few wineries in the state that I can enjoy both the white wines as well as the reds. I am a fan of the wine and the winemaker, so please swing by and check it out! read more

We love stopping in here- great staff and great wines. I usually find that I like most of what they have to offer. Their tasting flights are 5$ (10$ if you need a glass) which includes 5 pours. I'm not a massive port fan, but their Red Dessert Wine 2009 was a huge hit with my friends. Pairs nicely with chocolate. Goldie's 2011 was also nice, unusual flavors of cream and lemon. Callaghan Vineyards is one of the original vineyards in the Sonoita/Elgin appellation. Kent and Lisa are the second generation carrying on the fine reputation. Kent is the winemaker and has generously mentored a some of the new winemakers, which number is ever-growing. The Callaghan wines are consistently excellent. Many have won national awards. We have lived in this area for 20 years. When we ran our B&B, we could always recommend Callaghan's with confidence our guests would have a good experience and none were ever disappointed. More interesting dry reds here. Callaghan have managed to get some international acclaim for some of their reds, and it's easy to understand why. No water, soft-drinks, snacks or other victuals available here. It's wine. wine all the time. It's also located in a no-nonsense prefab building with a small porch and limited seating. The wines are good enough that I hope one day they'll have a more accommodating space for tastings. read more

1st time ever visiting the Soniota area. What a beautiful part of Arizona. Callaghan is one of many wineries in the area. What a great little find. The winery itself -building & tasting room was nothing special, but their reds were delicious. Nice thing about the wineries in the area, if you purchase a glass from any winery you can bring the glass to any winery and just pay for the tasting. I purchase the Buena Sueta & the Padre, which were both very good. read more

My favorite place in Sonoita for wine. The reds are all very good, we couldn't pick just one! And the good thing about this place is that they speak highly of the other vineyards in the area and recommend competitor wines, so they are not snobby. The LISA white is the best white of all the vineyards in Sonoita in my opinion and white is not a focus in the region due to the weather and soil. We got a bonus tasting as well! The dessert red is very good also and the only dessert wine we bought from the area. $10 for a tasting/glass and the best of all the wine souvenir glasses in the area, very large goblet size and sturdy. If you buy a glass there you get discounted tastings throughout Sonoita. A hidden gem! read more

This was our 1st stop for our wine tasting weekend on 12/29/12. When we walked in it was very crowded in the small tasting area. We were not greeted, but probably because the two hosts could not see us. We moved our way towards the front and we had to ask how to get a taste of the wines. The wine was then poured right away, but there was really no explaination of the wines. My husband and I are new to wine and that would have been nice. After tasting all of their wines we did not buy anything. Oh, the dog was not a bother. I even had my little dog with me who was in a carrier and it was no problem. read more

The first time I visited Sonoita was about 9 months ago. My friend and I stopped by a couple of the vineyards in the area, before stopping at Callaghan. We were greeted by their vineyard dog right as we got out of the car (any dog lovers out there know there is nothing better than being greeted by the happiest thing on 4 legs). We've never received such a friendly escort to our destination, she showed us exactly where to go and made sure we were behind her as we walked up the steps! As soon as we walked through the doors we were greeted with laughter by two of the women working that day. We were fortunate because it wasn't busy yet and we were given the opportunity to walk around the tasting room and learn more about the vineyard and the wines made. They brought out a couple glasses, and began to tell us about the grapes and the process used to make the wines, they also told us about how they came up with the names for their wine as well. From cheerful splashes of whites to robust layers of reds, we were not left disappointed. Side note - if you're going to doing tastings around Sonoita, be sure to stop at Callaghan Vineyard first. When you take your glass to the other vineyards they often knock a few bucks off the tasting, and the Callaghan wine glasses are wonderfully large! As a few other people came in, we noticed they were greetied in just as friendly of a manner as we were. It's nice to enjoy a glass of wine in a comfortable environment, surrounded by such positive energy. You can tell everyone who works there loves their job. When we left we stopped by a few other vineyards, and while the wine was okay, it wasn't the quality that we enjoyed at Callaghan's. So, of course we returned, and when we arrived it was very busy, but every person there was tended to, getting their questions answered and everyone was laughing and smiling. It felt like we were walking into a very casual gathering where strangers were quickly becoming friends! We ended up ordering a bottle of Z13 - which is divine if you enjoy a nice Zinfandel, and sat out on the patio to enjoy the weather and met some of the other wine enthusiasts in town! We purchased a few bottles to take home (a few of our favorites were the Z13, Claire's, Buena Suerte and Lisa's) and headed back to Phoenix, completely satisfied by the day spent at Callaghan Vineyard. Last week we decided to head down there again as our wine reserves were low and we thought we would check out Sonoita during the winter time. We stopped at Callaghan Vineyard first- we learned our lesson last time - and everyone there was just as friendly as we remembered. They have some new wines (I may be salivating a little as I type this just thinking about them) that we tried. Ann's and Dry Rose were amazing - they were also wrapped in a ribbon, indicating they won awards. We spent a little time with their wine dog and were greeted by more friendly faces and enthusiasm. I can't think of a better place to spend the day than at Callaghan's. I'm looking forward to going back again, already! read more

This winery is fantastic!! It is family owned and run and they were so super nice to us. We ended up purchasing a case to split between three of us. I've been going to Callaghan winery for the last 6 years. It has always been my favorite winery in the Sonoita area. I noticed there were some nice additions to the tasting room and now picnic area when I went this year. In addition they have had a change in staff Lisa and Jennie and so nice and friendly, and the wine glasses are pretty cool too. My parents were not happy, though my Mother lived in Paris in the 1930s and was very sophisticated for an American girl. I've tasted wine all over the world since. Kent Callaghan is a philosopher-wine-blending genius. His wine is better than anything you will taste in Napa or Sonoma at twice the price. Anywhere. Travel back in time decades to the old Napa, and taste wine in his tasting room on a slab of wood over a couple of wine barrels, often with the vintner, or his lovely wife doing the pouring. And thank Bacchus (the original wine-god) that Kent Callaghan is making wine in Arizona. read more
