My recommendation is to avoid any work done by California Rocks using Joaquin Lopez as the Sub Contractor I started a concrete project with California Rocks 18 months ago, Demo my old concrete and replace and redesign with new concrete around my pool and in the front yard, Marshall provided a competitive Quote and we started. Marshall was good to deal with , but his subcontractor "Joaquin Lopez" was impossible Poor Quality 1.The dyed concrete came out is various colors and was very apparent it was not mixed well 2. The stamping was not done correctly and in places we had tool , brush and footprints in the concrete, sections that were not stamped, steps that never got finished 3. During demolition there was damage to the plaster in my pool that was never repaired 4. During the pouring of the concrete there was splash onto my stucco that has never been removed. 5. The reinforcement wire was not supported and sunk to the dirt. This caused major cracks in the concrete Communication 1. Marshall did what he could to communicate but was not getting response from Lopez 2. Lopez would make promises and then not deliver most of the time 3. Money was requested and paid each time but I never held back enough to have any leverage. This was my mistake. To California Rocks Credit, they did come out and cut out some of the worst areas and poured new concrete. They offered to apply a coating to make all the concrete match. This made the situation better. The pattern they sprayed is not what I wanted, but to make this whole situation go away I agreed with it and it is done, Nothing I can do now except hate it. To this day there are areas in my front walk and driveway that have a white residue on them that I have asked several times to have fixed and I am now getting no response from Marshall or Joaquin Lopez. read more

We had such a good experience with California Rocks! Marshall and Lopez are a dream team. They really helped me realize the vision we had for our Backyard, they're experts in identifying problems (that other contractors didn't notice) and overall aesthetics and proportion. We added concrete to the pool area and a few other spots to begin with. Pricing was very competitive, and they got everything done so quickly! We even added on getting turf for the rest of the grass as we trusted their judgement on our sulky muddy grass! They even helped us design a putting green for my husband and now the whole family can participate. It's ridiculous how much we use our backyard now! There were also lots of little things (that had nothing to do with their work) we asked them to fix here there, they agreed to over and over again, you know they really care about every job and making their customers happy when they dump your old kiddie jungle gym for free! They are very busy and are always working on multiple jobs, but are always accessible and quick. Absolutely loved working with Marshall, he's a really cool guy. Some of the other reviews talked about him choosing his family over running around with his head chopped off for the clients. Not even the case, he always responds and tells you what to expect and WHEN. And if it doesn't happen, he follows up and done. Most people need to be more life focused like him, he's totally gives off good vibes. It was always a pleasure when he stopped by to check on the project. In June 2020, I gave a deposit to Marshall for extensive work to be done on my property. He came highly recommended! Several weeks later Marshall told me that Jaquin Lopez would be doing the work and to write him a check for $5,500 in advance of the work being done. "Lopez" and his crew worked for four days, clearing the back landscape, trimming the trees, laying concrete in the patio area, and rearranging the back area to build a firepit area. Included in the money already paid in advance were 3 new trees to be planted in the back area, a small driveway attached to patio (using existing pavers with provided sand, or if they enough concrete left, just make a concete driveway), and to repair the gaps and dips in the existing paver walkway to the firepit area with new sand (I had the new sand for them to use). They did a very good job trimming part of the trees, and did a wonderful job clearing the back lot of weeds. They did a so-so job on the new concrete area. Part of the patio area needs to be taken out and started all over. It was terrible, shoddy work! The firepit area was not done and they took all of the ground cover rock back with them and never built the firepit. I never got the 3 new trees. I called Marshall and left a message saying that I was very displeased with the work done, and with what work was not done and or provided. In the meantime, in August, I had a water leak in my house and was not home for 2 months while work was being done on the house. I called Marshall in October and he came over. He was very apologetic for the poor job that was done and for what was not done. He said that he would have his crew come over the next week to repair/finish the job correctly. They never came! I called Marshall back. He said that he was sick and to give him some time to recover. I called him back a month later and left a message. It is now a year later and nothing has been done! I have called numerous times and have not heard back from him! read more

Around mid April I was in the market to potentially have my backyard remodeled. The first quote I found was California Rocks on Yelp and requested a quote. I received a prompt response from Marshall within the hour and established a time that we could take a look at the yard. Marshall arrived on time on the requested date and we went over what I wanted done to my backyard. I initially wanted roughly a 1000sqft of concrete, 200sqft of artificial grass with drainage, pavers, a block seating area, rock and vegetation. Marshall was very receptive to what I requested and was able to write up a quote for me on the spot. I explained to him that this project was not going to happen for the next couple months. Marshall was understanding and we left in a mutual agreement. Fast forward to August. After several different quotes from different landscapers I came to the conclusion that Marshall had given me the lowest quote and gave him a call to let him know that I was ready for his services. Marshall was quick to reference back to April when we spoke last and we established another time to meet up. After we got back on track, we set up a day to break ground. After a few hiccups on my side we were able to get everything going. Marshall's righthand man, Lopez was the foreman for the job. On the initial interaction with him he told me, "I will do everything right, because I want to. Also, if I don't He (points to sky) will know." From then on, I knew everything was going to work out great. Everything from breaking ground to finish product took seven days. I am thoroughly pleased with everything Marshall and his crew was able to do with my backyard. My husband and I trusted his vision and couldn't be more satisfied with the end result. Our yard was a dirt patch full of weeds and rocks and now it's a space that we enjoy spending time in. California Rocks performed some cement work for me eight years ago and did a fine job. Marshall was patient, had some good ideas and I was pleased with the finished product and price. I even referred him to a friend who had him lay cement for a good-sized patio slab. Recently, about mid April, 2021, I needed some fairly simple masonry work done so called CR again and expected the same patient, skilled, and efficient service. Marshall came by with his daughter, to whom he is teaching the business, and was his usual friendly and helpful self. He gave me a ballpark estimate and said that he'd soon have a firm price for me. The next time we made contact he told me he'd come by so we could sign the contract. He made it sound as if I didn't sign it that day, I'd be put at the end of his project list and I wouldn't get the work done for several months--probably until the end of Summer. This was undue pressure that made me uncomfortable. We signed the contract on April 23 and I asked him when he could start the project. He wrote on the contract "May 14th or sooner." May 14 came and went and Marshall made no contact. I finally called him over a week later, and on May 24 he came by and was hesitant about the project and said that he was considering not doing it because he had too many things going on; despite the fact that we had a signed contract. He said that he needed to bring his foreman to the site to see if they could do it. I told him that if he didn't I would be back at "Square One" in terms of getting my project done and I'd endure a major delay. I asked if he could at least recommend someone else and he said "no," that everyone he knew was unlicensed and it would be a problem if something went wrong. Then I told him that although my project was relatively small, I hoped that he could fit me in his schedule and complete it. I also asked him that if he couldn't do my job, perhaps his daughter to whom he is "showing the business" could oversee my project. I don't recall what he specifically said but the bottom line was "no." He promised to send a text to me that evening after bringing his foreman by. As far as I can tell, he did not bring his foreman to my job site. In his text he said that he and his foreman met and decided that they wouldn't do my job and would refund my deposit the next day. He didn't refund my deposit the next day so I texted him and reminded him. I did receive the deposit on the second day. I suppose that I may have some recourse for his failure, as we did in fact have a signed contract, but I'm sure it's not worth pursuing. I'm intensely disappointed with Mr. Noriega and his company. We're now in the first week of June and my project should have been completed by now but I'm still in the process of finding a qualified contractor. In my opinion, the arbitrary and capricious cancelling of my project by Marshall is inconsiderate, rude and unacceptable business practice. I know that his reviews are full of five star comments but something has dramatically changed with this man's customer service and attitude. Not very impressed with communication, customer service , and attention to detail. They were very attentive to my neighbor who paid for a huge make over, but not so much for my small job. They broke a sprinkler and covered my other other sprinklers with the plastic which I had to cut out. The discarded grass was put in my green container instead of being taken away.
