This is my favorite local stop around me. Fresh ingredients, amazing portions... you will walk away full no doubt. A family ran place with an extra special down home dinner feel. I am a creature of habit and always order the same thing ( for over ten years) I'm a breakfast guy so I always get the Two eggs, Hardwood smoked bacon with home fries and two orders of sourdough break... don't judge. I came here expecting bland food, but the second I walked in and took my seat I regretted even thinking that. The inside gives off a homey feeling and was giving slay. As a vegan queen I ordered a biscuit and gravy skillet it was delicious. While there were no tvs to watch my drag shows on, but I wouldn't have had time to because the food was already at my table within 7 minutes. I love supporting small businesses and I love that I get to do just that in my new little part of town. This is about a 10 min drive from me and I'm so glad that I decided to check them out. I tried them for dinner before, had the shrimp po'boy sandwich. Omg was it delicious!!! I drove there because I saw on Facebook that it was the special of the day and the picture looked so good that I just had to have it!! I was not disappointed. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the spicy sauce was delicious. I had them for take out breakfast yesterday and once again they did not disappoint. I ordered a short stack of apple pancakes. Two huge pancakes filled with pieces of apple and cinnamon. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and that was also very good, did not taste like it came from a can. I ordered a side of corned beef hash and home fries to complete my breakfast. Everything was so good!! It's so nice to have a little diner that serves fresh food so close to home. If you are strolling past Sheridan this place is one you must check out. They seem to have specials frequently as I see them on their Facebook page. Stopped in at Calico Cafe for breakfast on our way through Illinois. Small town, quaint diner right next to the railroad tracks. The food was pretty great, we left stuffed. We had omelettes, pancakes, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and grits. My husband and I each got a short stack of pancakes.. do not be fooled. The pancakes are short, but they're also as big as your plate! You could definitely split an order between two people and have a separate order for eggs and other such breakfast necessities. Our waitress was a wonder, she had the diner floor to herself with a relatively busy joint. We never once wanted for drink refills or coffee. Our orders were all out in a timely manner and she brought out our small babes' food first. Talk about AWESOME service, we were really impressed. This place is so unsuspecting. I was in Sheridan visiting family and we needed a yummy place to catch some grub after a night of heavy drinking. My girlfriend and I visited this cafe on a Sunday around noon. We were able to get seated right away and given water and a menu. There are lots of options to chose from! I opted for the Calico Skillet and my girlfriend got the breaded tenderloin. Both were great, but I must say that Jana's tenderloin was maybe the best either of us have ever had! Fries were fresh cut and perfectly cooked. One thing to mention: the place is small and I believe they deep fry a lot of menu items, so there is a pretty strong smell coming from the fryer. I think a bigger capacity exhaust fan may overcome that problem. I will absolutely visit this cafe again as the food was simple, but really well prepared. read more

The Place The Calico Cafe is located at 215 N Robinson St, Sheridan, IL. It's a in a rural setting with a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere. There is adequate table seating or a counter if you prefer. The Menu The Calico has a great breakfast menu. Many dishes I would love to try. We were here for lunch so we got an assortment of things. The grand kids enjoyed hotdogs and toasted cheese sandwiches. The adults tried the Rueben corned beef, fresh sauerkraut on marbled rye bread. The special of the day was meatloaf. We also ordered a Garden Chicken Salad, chicken breast, crisp greens tossed with tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese. The Reuben was very good, the meatloaf... well it's meatloaf, the salad and the kids entrees were done nicely. The french fries were delicious and served in a gracious proportion size. The Service/Experience/Value This was a fun country experience at the cafe. Our waitress, Angie, was very nice and serviced our tabled well. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but if you can get passed that, I'm sure you'll be glad you stopped by. We're not from the area and we were looking for a breakfast spot. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, it was clean and nicely decorated. We ordered and everything was delicious. You can tell the cream of chicken soup is made from scratch, biscuits n gravy also from scratch. My husband loved their sausage steak with eggs. The waitress over heard us taking about it being my daughters birthday and she was offered free dessert. Let me tell you, you can't go wrong with the pecan pie or the strawberry short cake(yes, from scratch)! The bill was $60 but keep in mind that's 4 breakfasts 4 soups, 4 drinks, and 2 desserts. We loved this little place. Good food, cute atmosphere, good service and reasonable prices. Can't ask for much more than that on a road trip! Christopher had the spaghetti and I had the 50/50 which was spaghetti and fried chicken. It was all very good and came with a simple but fresh salad bar and garlic bread. The portions were ample. The only disappointment was the hamburger - vegetable soup I brought home for Mom. It wasn't bad, but it lacked flavor. I just had to add I had the pork tenderloin this past Friday and it was the best pork tenderloin dinner I've had in a long long time and pork tenderloin dinners is an item I almost always have if it is on the menu. It is fresh! It is not the frozen type you get just about everywhere these days, big plus. It was big too another big plus. I had mashed potatoes nice and think, once again big plus. Add the gravy a deep rich brown gravy (kudos to Liz who made it fresh) and this meal competes with the French Dip as my favorite at Calico Cafe. Both the French Dip and Pork Tenderloin if I were to rank them would easily be in the top five meals for home cooking type meals. Again price is right I tip at 20%+ and have yet spent more then $10 for a meal and have not yet left hungry. Only negative on Calico Cafe is it is a bit of a drive from Cortland but even the drive is making this little gem worth it read more

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I've been raving all week about the entire experience of Calico Cafe. For starters, the food was fantastic. Everything was homemade, from the scrumptious cream of broccoli soup, to the hand-cut fries and potato chips, to the special of the day: bacon stuffed, bacon wrapped meatloaf sandwiches. I had the Texas Chicken sandwich, and Calico was right--I've been craving it ever since (along with the soup). This was one of the most kid-friendly places I've been in ages. Calico keeps a tackle box of toys at the cash register, the chef made their sandwiches into "tents." We eat at a lot of local places, and we've had the experience of being "stared down" by locals. The experience at Calico Cafe was totally different. Not only was Calico present, warm & welcoming, but the customers were chatty and friendly too. After hearing that we had been hiking, they offered their own favorite hike suggestions. From food to people, this was just a lovely discovery. It's worth the detour! Nice little diner in my book! It was 1:50 when I got out of my car and noticed that they closed at 2, which made me hope that they weren't gonna spit in my food. Inside had a lot of various small town decorations and figurines. My presence wasn't deterred, due to my late arrival. Menu was pretty extensive so I asked what was good and the girl recommend the Texas Chicken, which was a boneless chicken drenched in ranch sauce, then topped with barbecue sauce and shoestring onions with a side for $6. While waiting, I got some sweet tea and a slice of unbelievable apple date pie, which apparently was made my Calico's mom. The sandwich was delicious!
