All around best place for bbq and customer service. Love the food and it's the only place we eat out.

We came for dinner last night, it seemed like a long wait time but a nice woman in the front asked f my husband & I would mind bar seating so we agreed & were sat pretty quickly by a nice guy! Our server was outstanding he was an older gentleman but pretty cool & was very attentive even though we were off to the side by the window seats. My husband got the 1/2 chicken bbq plate w/ a side of Mac & cheese. He liked the wedding beans but said the bbq wasn't up to the hype he's heard. Me on the other hand I got the tri-tip plate which was pretty good! You could see the smoke ring & taste the low & slow smoke they advertise which was great. It was a little on the dry side but paired with the bbq sauce & pickled onions which were so yummy it didn't disappoint. The cornbread muffin was also good had lots of jalapeño bits but didn't have much cheddar but that was fine by me. Loved the wedding beans ! They were smoky and sweet with shredded meat and pieces of bacon it was very hearty & went well with the tri-tip. All in all I would definitely return maybe to try some of the other items like the brisket & pulled pork. All credit though goes to the great customer service we had!! read more

One of the absolute best places to go, and one of my new favorites. I got the Cali burger w/ fries, and buffalo bone-in wings. The burger along with the bacon on it was cooked very well and had great flavor. The fries are the best fries out of anywhere I've ever tasted. The wings also were the best I've ever had. This place is located a little off the beaten path, but it's worth venturing to find. I was interested in having these folks cater an event of mine, so I went in to sample the food first. The atmosphere is as you'd expect for a BBQ joint, and with a friendly staff. The food was also good. What was really amazing though, was how patient and thorough the catering team was. They answered all of my questions, ensured we ordered the right quantities, etc. It was a pleasure doing business with them, and I'll be back for another meal. read more

First time here: We ordered the combo plate. We chose rib tips , tri tip, Mac n cheese, seasoned fries, extra order 4 piece order of corn bread and wedding beans. The tri tip was thin and not very tasty. which we were expecting thicker cut pieces. With some outside char from the fat of the meat and just some seasoned goodness..Neither was there. .the rib tips are suppose to be the best part of the ribs. However, they were extremely fatty and not much meat on it which left us wanting better quality. The mac n cheese was okay at first at best but honestly the more we ate it the more we were turned off by it's consistency and mush of noodles that were extremely over cooked. The fries were cold and soggy. Ugh. No one wants a soggy fry. I had to cook them again once home. !!NOW THE GOOD !! The beans . Bomb. The meat inside was nice and tender and shredded well. The flavor was very Smokey yet not too Smokey and was overall delicious umami flavor. The jalapeño cornbread. I could have eaten 10 those muffins . They were just the right amount of jalapeño to the corn flavor. Those two items were the best part of our $50 meal. I totally understand inflation and all that and happily pay $50 plus for a good meal. However only enjoying two items from whole meal was not what we were looking for in a great BBQ spot. read more

My nephew asked for my advice for a good burger place to have his birthday lunch. After searching through Yelp, I couldn't find any that we hadn't gone to. My brother-in-law decided on BBQ instead of burgers and decided on Cali Comfort BBQ based on my niece's recommendation and the 4.5 star Yelp rating and over 1000 reviews. I was excited to try a restaurant universally liked by San Diegans and I wanted to see if the hype was real. I'll give Cali Comfort 3.5-4 stars. The hype was okay. Cali Comfort is located in Spring Valley. From the outside, the restaurant looks small, but once you enter, it's deceivingly spacious. There is plenty of parking for this popular restaurant. Entering the restaurant, there are plenty of framed pictures keeping with the California theme. Beautiful pictures of California landmarks, sports themed pictures of our local teams, and a picture of an artist's rendering of our, cross your fingers, future San Diego Chargers downtown stadium. Behind an employee's counter, I liked the mounted statue of Michael Jordan, which is kind of random, but you could never go wrong with Be Like Mike. Cali Comfort is a large restaurant. There are many sections within the restaurant. There's a sports bar area, rooms with plenty of seating, and an outdoor patio area that would be perfect for a Fantasy Football draft. All the rooms that I saw were equipped with big screen televisions. Seeing a steady flow of customers on a Saturday made me realize that this restaurant can handle a crowd easily. The large number of reviews and the 4.5 star rating isn't only for the ambience and decor, which I'm sure isn't the most important criteria for reviewers. It's all about the food. And that's where Cali Comfort fell short on some aspects. If you're a legitimate BBQ restaurant, you have to have sweet tea. Cali Comfort's sweet tea had just the right sweetness, was refreshing, and came in a huge glass. I ordered the brisket plate, which comes with a good amount of brisket, beans, fries, and a jalapeño cornbread muffin. For $14.99 and an extra dollar to change your side item, which I switched out the beans for the mac n cheese, I appreciated the amount of food for the value price. What I didn't appreciate was the cold temperature of the brisket and the mac n cheese. The brisket was tender and tasty, but the temperature distracted me from enjoying it. The mac was creamy and cheesy, but the coldness made it less enjoyable. The thin fries were crispy and seasoned well. Besides the sweet tea, I found the jalapeño cornbread moist, delicious, and it had enough jalapeños to give it a kick along with sweetness. My son had the County Fair sandwich, which had pulled pork, mac n cheese, and melted cheddar in between grilled sourdough bread. I was impressed with the small sample my son kindly left for me. As you can read, the food was a mix of good and bad. I can see why Cali Comfort is revered by San Diegans. In my opinion, it's not as good as some of the other San Diegan restaurants I've eaten at. I would place Coop's and Phil's ahead of Cali Comfort, but I can understand why people gravitate to Cali Comfort. I'd make a return trip to try out their sandwiches and their deep fried jalapeño bottle caps. Hopefully, my next visit will have food that is warmer than what experienced on my first visit. read more

Placed a large order for a birthday party from this place and it was way worth it! I stopped by before placing the order online as I had some questions on how much to order. The ladies upfront were very helpful and one of them was more than courteous on showing me plate sizes and all the side options, something she didn't have to do but was nice enough to. Everything we ordered on the tailgator package was delicious, but one thing that's worth mentioning is definitely the baked beans! Very flavorful and tasted exactly like you'd want them to. Probably the only things that were not that great were the fries and the jalapeño cornbread, but again no big deal. The prices for the amount of food/meat we got were also not bad at all, considering that we fed 10 people and we had a bunch leftover. Celebration dinner with the family. Our server, Mark, along with the rest of the attending staff, was very friendly and accommodating helping to make this a great occasion. This was my first time at Cali Comfort. The food is home-style comfort like the name of the restaurant. All of the meats are tasty and moist. The sauce rich and sweet. Don't forget about the sides--macaroni & cheese and beans are like none I've had before. Fries, tots and onion rings seasoned and crispy just the way I like. A great Cali-Style BBQ place. I've tried the BBQ nachos, which were covered with non-traditional nacho toppings like BBQ sauce and beans. Odd, but oh so delicious. I also ordered the BBQ brisket. Needed to celebrate 4th of July w some good BBQ! We wanted to try something different, so a friend recommended Cali Comfort BBQ! Why not? You only live once, and this place did not disappoint. I wanted the tailgate combo but if you pay for 3 plates and add onion rings plus peach cobbler you save about $10!! I got the brisket (didn't wow me), half rack pork ribs (good) but the pulled pork was (awesome) good! Order ahead other wise you wait forever (still worth it), oh and the jalapeño corn bread (bomb.com)!! Ask for extra bbq sauce! Sides were okay, Mac and Cheese needs more cheese. Beans are good! San Diego is hard pressed to deliver good BBQ but Cali Comfort is definitely one of the better BBQ spots around. My first encounter with their food was at the Del Mar BBQ festival, and I knew I'd have to seek out their local fare once I tried it. While all of the meats are clearly cooked low and slow and have a great flavor and the sauces are rich and have a nice heat, the true star is the home made peach cobbler. The cobbler comes with peach ice cream and it is far and away one of my favorite desserts of all time. The perfecf crunch to squish ratio matched with a nice warmth to cold ratio brought on by the ice cream creates a decadent dessert you're sad to see leave your plate but glad to feel fill your stomach! This place isn't bad, but it's not amazing either. I'm a huge BBQ fan, and the food here just isn't as good as Coops or Bubbas. The building and atmosphere however are top notch, but the food is slightly lacking. Definitely worth a visit, but not necessarily visiting it more than once. read more

Food - 0 stars if possible Service - 5 stars because server was amazing, but hostess was laughable So I averaged it out to 3 stars Our server was awesome! His attention to my family was great! We never had to go looking for him. Drinks full, napkins readily available. Our hostess she was funny. She wouldn't talk to anyone but my brother in laws girlfriend, even when she was listing the specials for the day. Being in Spring Valley, you'd think seeing brown people would be normal. But no, she only looked at and talked to the one white person in the group. The food...that's another story. We tried the macho nachos with carnitas. The chips were soggy, the sour cream was just dropped in the middle on the top of a very small portion of nachos. And they added sliced olives as a filler. There was barely any carnitas. It seemed like it was tossed in the microwave to melt the cheese. I've paid less at fancier places for nachos and got twice as much food. My entree was their version of a BBQ sampler. You get 2 choices of meat and 2 sides. Some of their sides are an additional $1. Well I ordered the Tri tip and the pulled pork with shoe string fries and Mac n cheese. The meat was dry and flavor less. The only BBQ sauce you got was in a little 2 oz sauce container. Luckily our server kept brining us more because without it, the meat sucked. The fries were overcooked and the Mac n cheese was bland. I almost felt like the food was not being tasted because nothing had any flavor except for the BBQ sauce. Even sadder was the Mac n cheese with bacon bits for the kids. Out of three kids, only one ate it and that was because she was hungry and said she didn't want to be rude and not eat what she ordered. They also said their food was cold. Well when tested, it just wasn't piping hot like you expect from restaurants. Yes we eat out a lot. I ate here before the new management/owners and I remember the food being amazing. Now, I don't care how close it is to me, I'll drive in the other direction to Coops BBQ for food. Came here for our friend Kevin's visit from Georgia. I've been to this place 20 years ago for happy hour. This joint participates in the local BBQ contests and so I had to try some BBQ. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and put the coke slaw and bbq sauce on it and made an open face sandwich. Gotta tell yah, this was a great sandwich. The ladies ordered and shared the bbq combo. Visited 06/21/2016 Been trying to get down here for BBQ for a long time. With The wife off work for the day we decided to take the hour and 15 minute drive and give it a good try. Boy am I glad we did. First off there's a fair amount of good free parking. That's a plus here in San Diego. There is a vast amount of seating inside as well as two different dog friendly outside seating areas. There is a nice long bar for those who wish to sit at the bar. We were greeted by the staff as we got there and seated right away. The staff was super friendly and very helpful on explaining their menu and making suggestions to the most popular dishes. We started by splitting their famous San Diego Sangria Fish Bowl. Very tasty but could've used a bit more liquor for a $33.00 drink. Jan had the 1/2 Rack Pork Ribs Dinner and I had the Two Meat Combo. The ribs were fantastic. They were soft juicy and tender with a great Smoke Ring. Best ribs I've had in any San Diego barbecue restaurant. The Try Tip was a little dry to my liking and lacked any seasoned flavor. The beef brisket was better and was juicy with a bit more of flavor. The Jalapeño cornbread was very good and the big surprise was the homemade Barbecued Baked Beans. OMG. They were very tasty and not sweet but savory. There was some type of barbecued meat mixed right in just to make them that much better. Highly recommended. The french fries were perfect great way to go. Their big bbq plate to share is cool, pretty much everything you'd want, bbq beans slaw and biscuits, all good. Their drinks are a little expensive but still cool, their fishbowls and stuff are to share, you drink that alone you're gonna need help walking out lol read more

Everybody was so nice the beers were excellent the beers that the girl recommended were excellent the only thing the stools where you sit at the bar are so hard I feel it this morning in my back I had to move to a table because that hard flat piece of wood it's not comfortable I had to stand up there for a bit and if you notice people don't go in there because if you don't have comfortable seats at the bar ain't nobody gonna come in a drink But everything else is fine it's a nice place well I hope to be there more this football season read more

Came by today for lunch before we headed out to the beach. We ordered the brisket sandwich which was thick tender juicy and delicious will definitely order this yummy sandwich again. Sandwich came with a jalapeño muffin which was good and moist.I also ordered a side of the tri-tip so I could try it, was also a home run for me tender and juicy. Between the two meats the brisket takes the cake by a long shot I loved how they charred the top and sliced it in thick pieces! I really liked their barbecue sauce it has a sweeter taste to it and that's what I prefer. My girl always orders the Buffalo chicken wings which she says are good and always seems to order whenever we come over. An last but not least we also ordered a side of the beer battered onion rings which were yummy n crispy and their ranch is good.
