Lulu in her Summer sun dress.
Lisa S.

Thank God for Calaveras Veterinary Clinic. A little over a week ago, my 9 year old Chihuahua, Lulu, was vomiting. On a Thursday morning, she kept trying to eat grass and vomited 4 times. Her tail was tucked under, she was lethargic, and just not her normal happy self. She is usually right by my side, but this day, she snuggling so close to me that I could barely move my arms. Unfortunately, our regular vet was not able to see her. They gave me a few numbers to call but after doing some research and reading reviews, I decided to just make my own calls. I called Calaveras Veterinary Clinic and they said that I could bring her at noon. Because they were working her in, I may have to wait. I was totally fine with that. I had already made about 4 or 5 calls. I didn't have to wait long, the vet techs were both very kind and compassionate. Lulu had a fever and was dehydrated. They gave Lulu some fluids, medication to settle her stomach, and an antibiotic. They also drew some blood and recommended some food for dogs with digestive problems. I purchased the food and took her home. That night, she wouldn't even eat the new canned dog food that I purchased. I REALLY knew then that she wasn't feeling well. She hadn't eaten in two days and she is super food obsessed! By the next morning, she was a little more peppy and gobbled up her new dog food. Our other dog wanted some also. It looks like stew for humans. Over the next few days, she slowly got back to herself. On Monday, the vet called me and told me that her white blood cells were high and that she had pancreatitis. She informed me that this is not uncommon in little dogs. We will be very careful with what we feed her. We RARELY give her table scraps and when we do, it's meat mixed in with her dry dog food. She eats everything. She loves fruit, veggies, just everything. When I adopted her from the SPCA, in 2016, she was 2 years old, not leash, trained, not potty, trained, and had a litter of two boys while she was there. I can't help, but think that she was living in the backyard with other Chihuahuas and not eating enough. Now all she wants to do is eat. That is why we don't feed her excessively. She's very tiny and I don't want her to be fat and unhealthy. When I spoke to Dr. Simco on the phone, she couldn't be more kind and explained everything to me, along with answering my questions. The antibiotic had helped a great deal. She also offered that if Lulu's wasn't continuing to improve, there was another antibiotic that may work better. Lulu is now back to her crazy self and I am elated. I truly thought I was going to lose her. She will stay on this special, low, fat food, which I purchased at the vets office. I did look on Amazon, but it is way more expensive. I can't thank Dr. Simco and her staff enough for saving my little Lulu girl. She's part of my family and very important in my life.

Took Rusty the Yorky that I inherited from my grandma when she passed away. He had a bad mouth infection he's 13 and they were wonderful to him at the Calaveras veterinarian clinic. He came home awake walking around already and eating I couldn't ask for more.

The unlucky patient.

I was educated by the staff, and left with more knowledge. I wish sanctuaries didn't have to exist. I wish that animals could live in the wild. This was as close I've seen to the wild - given these animals are in captivity. The elephants look healthy and strong. Finally a place that allows the animal to live the rest of their life as an animal, not a circus prop.

During the fires three years ago, In true AR fashion, the animals were left to burn to death as the disgusting owners did nothing to evacuate them. Just another disgusting scammuary that doesn't bother to give their animals proper medical care, and seeps up money from idiots for their animal rights agenda. This is truly sad anyone could support a disgrace of a sanctuary. I wonder if it would be okay for a pet owner to allow their pets to burn to death if there was danger of fire. My pets are savannahs and hybrid mixes. I have no doubt that if I let my cats toy burn to death, AR groups would have judged and condemned me. There was a fire a mile from my home, and I got enough cardboard boxes to transport my pets. Yet, when a fire was a mile away from this scammuary the AR leadership would have left those animals to burn to death. I hope this facility shuts down or is taken over by people that actually value animals over their stupid AR agenda. The small zoo near my house had all the animals evacuated in 30 minutes when the same fire I prepared for was a mile close. Yet, AR scammuary didn't care enough about their animals to do the same. I hope the people from the Toronto Zoo gave those idiots a piece of their mind for killing their elephants. There are elephants that are working animals that live longer! You are all sick and disgusting! AR has nothing to do with the welfare and well being of an animal, it is about destroying the human and animal bond.

Backgrounder: we bought a house with a large, fenced yard so that our hunting dog could have the freedom to run and explore to his heart's content because walks were never enough for our registered field dog. So he usually runs around our property without a collar which we only use when we take him out. Today, we couldn't find his collar in our hurry to make it to Discount Pet on Hammer Lane for his heart worm test before VIP Pet closed for the week, so we used what was in sight: a one-piece leash with a loop at the end aka a choke collar just so we could make it on time. Although she knew absolutely nothing about us and our dog, the vet immediately started criticizing us for using such a collar, saying it was "unacceptable" in a very patronizing tone, going on and on, asking if we wanted such a collar around our necks, and even having the temerity to tell my husband he didn't know how to train our dog who is an 8-year-old veteran of multiple, always successful and safe hunting trips that would be impossible without careful training. Despite knowing nothing about our dog's temperament, our relationship with him (he's our baby), or our background as loving dog humans for over 30 years, she was disrespectful, obnoxious and highly presumptuous, putting us off ever using VIP Pet Services again. Through the years, we've spent hundreds of dollars at VIP Pet. I liked the convenience and their staff until today. You can be sure that after this bad experience, I'll be looking for a good neighborhood vet who knows how to treat humans, as well as dogs, humanely and respectfully.
