I can't comment on the food (though it smells fantastic) because I've only breezed through to fill growlers on my way home, but they definitely have arrived on the beer front. If you're feeling adventurous, try the chili beer. If not, the pale, amber and Riparian IPA are all good. Plus the staff is always really great. read more

Strange but cool This place is sort of kitschy if not a little run down. Like almost all places when you walk in it has that " ok what the hell do I do now "? feeling to it. You can sit outdoors or indoors and occasionally they will have some live music. There is no table service all food and drink must be ordered at the bar. So there we are that's out of the way and you don't have to feel akward now if you go there. Beer ! Tons of it ! Most of it is pretty unique. Their jalapeno beer is kind of novel but a really good one everyone should try at least once. The others were true to their name although the amber tasted more like a pale. The food .... IS GREAT ! I've never heard any complaints and I always order the burgers. The pizza burger is fantastic and all their food items are pretty creative and reasonably priced. The fries were OK but definitely just frozen. Downsides ... the locals. I get that Albany isn't a huge place and even Albanians ( clever right ? ) Need a place to hang out. Every time i'm there though there are some creepy weirdos and there is always one person who is just drunk and really loud and obnoxious. In such a small establishment it can be really distracting. Overall if you want a good beer and burger and don't mind the occasional creepy local or ordering everything from the bar, check it out. A very creative place with some unique items. read more

I went here last night for a burger. It was very good, not the best I have ever had but good and hit the spot! The tater tots were my favorite part! They were sooooo good! We sat outside which was really nice. The beer list is big. The servers inside could have been a little nicer. I stood by the refill station for 5 minutes and the lady kept looking at me and saw my glass but never came over to me, I finally had to go to her and ask and she was snotty about it. Tried the place out for lunch and was very pleased. I had the chilli beer and a V burger. Both have a little spice to them, and are complimented by amazing flavors. I arrived at Calapooia on a nice Monday afternoon. There was only one bartender/server working and one busser. We ordered beer, chicken wings, and a buffalo chicken sandwich. The food came out quickly and it was above average and the beer was great. I took away a star because they were out of tater tots. :( I was looking forward to the gutbomb. read more

Beer here is amazing! Types and alcohol levels for everyone whether the casual drinker or the total beer snob. Sandwiches/burgers and TOTS (hell yes) were delicious and atmosphere was super chill while we waited for food. Very friendly waitstaff who acknowledged before we asked what was up that our food was taking a really long time. Poor service, we had NO service. We drove the 25 min from Salem to go try something different, what a disappointment. We went on a Saturday night and walked in the door around 6:45pm. Inside there was about 20 people, most of which were seated at the bar. We found a somewhat clean open table in the corner and sat down. I waited about 5min and finally got up and went to the bar and grabbed a couple of menus. There was both a man and a woman behind the bar, never said a word to me. The lady actually made eye contact and watched as I went back to my table. After looking over the menu for awhile and trying to make some kind of eye contact with anyone that looked like they worked there, we had no success. We waited until 7:05 got up and left. For 20mins we sat in that place and had zero service. Not a good way to run a business. We drove back to Salem and went somewhere else. read more

Love this place! It is close to the river in the old industrial and railroad part of town. Great area for this kind of business. Food is good and arrived promptly. The reuben was of generous size and tasted very good. I especially enjoyed the fries. They were crispy and tasted excellent. Could make a meal of just the fries. I am not a fan of hoppy beers so I had the porter and like it. The Kaimen (lager?) was really tasty. My wife and I will return. We want to taste more brews The service was grade A. I am terribly hard of hearing even with hearing aids. The man behind the bar sensed that I was not understanding him and stated as much. He then spoke slower and more clearly. What a gift! This is not my first time there but will definitely be my last. As Soo. As we walked in the dark haired younger lady was very rude and short with our group! We then went to order our food and when telling her that our group was paying on 2 separate checks she then got even more rude and rolled her eyes! At this point I was ready to get our money back and leave the establishment but we waited to get our food thinking maybe we just came when she was stressed and had alot to do. Well as the time went on she continued to make us feel that we were unwelcome and that she did not want to serve us. First time here today. Food was decent but service was pretty non existent and we felt like we were bothering them. When we told the lady behind the bar that was taking our order that we were paying separately I am pretty sure she rolled her eyes at us. When she asked what I wanted and I asked for a BLT with garlic fries she said I can't have garlic fries. She said my choices were only fries or tots so I said fries. I then asked if they just didn't have garlic fries and she said they did but I can't substitute with my blt which is fine I guess but she made it really seem like I just couldn't ever have any if I wanted some on the side or ordered seperately so I was comoelled to ask more questions...then she said some days they will let you substitute but she wasn't going to let us today. The Ruben was good - but I really assumed there'd be a Tillamook Swiss and it was more like a creamy-waxy-nothing white cheese. I love sauerkraut Sonoma brinery chipolte from Natural Grocers - the best! I bet it would be outstanding on this Ruben, especially since you're apparently serving fermented kraut (your kraut was lost on me) Ketchup...everywhere we go seems to be serving up Organic Portland Ketchup from Portlandia Foods, Inc. Oregonians want Heinz 51, please! We had to eat in the small entry room because a party was being reserved in the huge courtyard-like-brewery section. It was so crazy noisy we couldn't imagine a band playing under the lighted area that appeared to be a band-ready corner. Some foam egg carton noise eaters would be ideal in the ceiling. The barkeeper was so so so unassertive and then forgot us for about 15 minutes until I went back up to the bar and asked if she was going to pull our beers...then about 20 minutes even more of a wait for food, our single sandwich came out and our beers were drained already. Not a busy Friday night at 5:30pm. We really liked Calapooia Brewery - hope this review doesn't come through as negative - we will definitely return! read more

So this a great place for food and brews! They'll make your burger anyway you like it...all you have to do is ask. I really enjoyed the Undertow and the Shipwreck!! I bought three growlers and Andrew was super nice to help me fit them in my cooler for my 6 hour ride to my friends' place. I was there on a holiday and it wasn't busy, so I don't know about crowds, music or service during a busy time. If I'm back that way I will definitely hit it up again! read more

Decent pub food. Excellent beer. The "down-home" atmosphere probably isn't for everyone, but for most it is a treat. If you enjoy watery, flat beer this is not what you are looking for. I've been to this establishment many times in the last two years. Its close to my house, so its very quick and easy to get to. A great place for a last minute dinner out. Even though I had heard some great reviews about this place before I went, I was still uneasy when I walked in for the first time. The inside is pretty small, only room enough for about 10 tables, a bar, and a space to throw darts. There is some seating outside, however seeing how this is Oregon its hardly available. The seats are either too wet, or when it is dry and sunny they are stuffed full of people trying to soak up some Vitamin D while they still have the chance. However, after ordering some food and beer at the bar, I was shortly shown how awesome this place can be. FOOD: If you like a good beer and burger, this place is for you. Want a burger with just beef? They got it. How about a burger with jalapeno cream cheese? Or a burger with grilled Italian pepperoni,provolone, and tangy marinara sauce? Its all yours. Even better, all of their burgers are with natural Oregon meat. But that's not all. Along with several other burger selections, they have sandwiches, hot dogs, fish and chips, beer chili, and more. That's just the start to this great menu. The award winning beer here goes anywhere from light and subtle like the Luckiamute Ale, to dark enough to stay lingering on your tongue long after your glass is gone such as the Undertow Imperial Stout. You can even get a growler to take home with you and share with your friends. (Or not, no ones judging) PRICE: This place will give you quality food without emptying your wallet. Most of the items on the menu is around ten dollars. Sure, its more expensive than Denny's or Ihop, but not without good reason. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is a bit cozy inside, and certainly loud. Especially on a Friday or Saturday night. They also have local bands every Sunday night which is great but with how close everything is on the inside, the acoustics certainly pick up and is hard to ignore. You probably wont be having much conversation while they are playing, and children might be a bit hard to have around as well. Otherwise, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. STAFF: Since you order your food and beer at the bar, there isn't much table service here. However, the staff are very friendly. They are quick to say hello and take your order. They deliver the food to your table in a timely manner with a smile, and are always around if you need something else. LOCATION: The Calapooia Brewery isn't in the most obvious spot. If you didn't know it was there, you could almost miss it. Even though its close to my house, it still took me a few tries to find it the first few times. Thankfully there are many locals that are quick to give you a hand, and also easy directions on any map site online. Once your there, you wont regret taking a second to look for it. read more
