My husband and I have a hobby of going to all the different breweries we can. That being said, this is our all-time favorite. We've been to breweries all over the country and some in Europe, and this one is the one that stands out. It's crazy how it's in little Albany, OR. The brews here are ALL good. That is just hard to believe, I know. Normally, when doing a taster, I will find that I only like half of what I taste, not here. The brew-master has his recipes to a "T". My favorite is Boxcar Brown. The food is great too. But, in good fashion, they are a brewery first and a restaurant second. Other places have it the other way around. Fresh Beer, Stale Service. I stopped in off 1-5 traveling home from Eugene and wanted to check out a random out of town brewery. Thank goodness for GPS, you have to wind around a bit to find this corner brewery. Calapooia had been around for about 9 years or so and they're most known for their Chili Beer. It really is good and has great heat -made with 300 lbs of Chilis and only 5.5% ABV, but it's not for everyone. I ordered the Riparian IPA, it was good, but not remarkable. I sampled one other before that. The women working were not very hospitable. I asked them a question about what their best selling beer was and they seemed bothered that I tried conversing. I got my beer, sat there, paid my tab and left. The pub atmosphere was sufficient, but not charming. People packed in though, and it seemed like a good food spot. I wasn't there to watch TV, but their monitor was very outdated and should either be taken down or upgraded. The picture was so lousy that it hurt my eyes as I glanced around the room. Since having moved to the area, I've come in here a few more times to meet up with friends for a pint and some grub. I will attest that their menu is correct that they DO have the BEST burgers in Albany, which are served with potato chips. My friend once ordered the Sun Burger (the veggie burger), and the staff added avocado to it for her for free! I've also had the Pepper Tree sausage with fries, and I thought it was good, but nothing to get super excited about. Most of the servers and staff I've come in contact with are top notch and are very friendly. This is one of the few (possibly 2) bars open on Sundays in Albany. Also on Sundays I've heard they have a blues jam sesh. Interesting... Can't wait to chill here during the summer season! read more

My husband and I were visiting our family in Albany. They had suggested a trip to Calappoia for some good burgers and beer. I was excited, because Nashville, TN doesn't have the same kind of beer available. I'm an Oregon girl, and miss craft beer! I was not disappointed at all. I ordered the sampler, and LOVED every single drop. It was a fun way to experience the different brews. The food was good too. I ordered the squirrel burger (BIL recommended it) and fell in love. I can't wait to make another trip "home" because I miss this beer (and my family)! Oh..and you can buy growlers and take them home. We did that too! read more

Along the riverfront in Albany, a few blocks further than we had expected, after driving back and forth several times, we finally found this little gem. The interior is small but feels very relaxed and comfortable, there are dartboards, a tv, and a big wall of taps. A board above the counter displays all the regular and seasonal beers in brightly colored chalks. The waitress/bartender was a doll. Tiny, cute, energetic woman with amazing bright colored clothes, eclectic jewelry, and a really great attitude. She was the only one poring drinks and taking orders in the place, and though its a small room and service seemed a bit slow i looked over a couple times and could see she was completely busy pouring beer after beer the whole time. Had i been that busy i don't think i could maintain such a good attitude. I had a little bit of a crush on her. :) I had the Chili Beer, which is a semi spicy amber ale brewed with various hot peppers and with great hops / malt balance, and the Rock Hard Rye which was a bit more hoppy than i usually like but also super tasty. I ordered the V Burger which was good, a little more pink than i usually like, but the meat was really fresh tasting so i was ok with that. It was sort of standard but good hancrafted pub fare, nothing too exciting but still very fresh, hand formed patties, nice crisp veggies on it, and really fresh tasting salad on the side. It did take about 25 minutes for the food to come out, which seems a bit long for a burger that is still pink, but hey, i'll give them the benefit of the doubt. It was kind of busy, the Tsunami Warnings for Hawaii were playing on the TV news, distracting everyone including the server and cook. Plus the service was super friendly and the beer was excellent, so if i am ever back in the area again i will definitely stop by! read more

The hubs and I try to stop in here everytime we head down to Eugene to visit his momma. The last time we were in we had a little lunch along with filling a growler with their delicious chili beer. I wanted something light so I just ordered a salad. This was the first time ever in my life where I got a side of potato chips served up with a green salad. It took me by surprise and I imagine it would probably annoy some people. For me, well, I though it was AWESOME. Keep up the good work, Calapooia. The burger was out of this world yummy :) Think the Beaver Brand mustard gave it an extra dose of flavor. Fries and beer were so-so. Chili beer was way too weird, but a must try! The atmosphere was lame - too many windows and big empty spots (for darts??), no warmth. We went for lunch so maybe better during dinner hour. Would highly recommend for the burger tho, and the fun selection of brews. read more

Just found this place. Looks like all they have on tap is their own brews, so I started with a sampler. White Water Wheat: light, a hint of citrus (grapefruit?). Nice color, not too much carbonation. Big Aft Pale: I am not an IPA fan, but I liked this. Great color, smooth texture, not too overly hoppy like most pale ales. River Dog ESB: nothing distinguishing about this one. Of course, maybe the hot sauce from the burger was interfering... Santi Amber: nice, mild amber beer, just as an amber should be. There's some top note I can't quite identify, but it's tasty. Riparian: yeah, a real IPA. I am not the right guy to give a review of this. Devil's Hole Stout: really smoky stout, I liked this a lot. I go for the darker stuff anyway! Chili beer: damn, I should have tried this first, the hot sauce from my burger is killing my taste buds :( I can tell there is something unique here. Caber Toss Scotch Ale: I love scottish ales. This isn't one, sadly. For the main course I ordered the Class 5 burger and tots. Damn good burger.... Overall the beers about par with McMennamin's, but the food is better. I would give Calapooia 5 stars but I am not a big fan of the days they have music. The music is great - don't get me wrong, but you have to be prepared to go and listen to music. You can't go to hang out with friends if you expect to have a conversation. The music is so loud! The beer though is great, the food is yummy, and the service friendly. read more

This place is always, I mean always, busy!! Therefore while the staff is always super friendly they are slammed but still do a good job. The food is great. Burgers are pretty greasy...like your bottom bun will become soggy. For kids they have a good amount of options. I can't think of anything I'd change so it must be good! I recommend doing a flight. A solid place and we had no issues other than havI got to wait in line for ordering beers & food at the bar. It takes away from the experience to wait 15-20 min. Only 1 server taking the orders and pouring pints, so the lines were long. I want to be sitting down, enjoying ales and conversation. Good food, good beer line up. Beers just above average. Beer is always cold and delicious! Burgers are scrumptious too and they do a really great job with their buffalo wings too! Very casual dining with dart boards and great outdoor seating. Disappointing. The service was slow and inattentive and the food not impressive. I ordered nachos as an appetizer, which must have been forgotten because they arrived after our dinner and were cold and the cheese unmelted. After our food arrived, we were not checked on once to see how things were. And we ended up having to go find the server to get the check. The one thing they had going for them was a great veggie burger from Nearly Normal's. And my husband said his beer was decent. But I would not jump at the chance to return. read more

Fantastic atmosphere (especially in the summer) complete with wonderful, well-informed/knowledgeable staff who are always amicable.

The food is still good, and the prices are still inexpensive. This is not a good place to go to during the evening of a weekend if you are trying to have a conversation with others. There was a band playing (which can be nice to listen to), but this made it very difficult to have conversations with my friends. I'm looking forward to the summer time when they have bands playing outside, and eating space outside. The small space in the main restaurant is a little small and noisy for my liking, but I will be back in the summer, and maybe earlier in the days for lunchtime to avoid the noise. read more

Being that this is really the only real brewery in Albany, OR I have to say I am a fan. The last time I was there I had a couple of pints of the RIPArian IPA. It was a terrific big hoppy IPA that I would recommend to any IPA lover. However the chicken strips I had were not the greatest in fact I was not a fan at all...good thing the beer was so good! Stopped here today after hearing about it from a friend. Wife and I both had burgers (she had the pub burger and I had the chili burger). They were really good as were the fries and tots. I've eaten lunch here many times. Although this type of venue caters to a younger crowd I've been pleasantly surprised to have always been treated hospitably. The beers are a lot more palatable than most of the other microbreweries in Oregon. I have not thoroughly explored the menu and tend to stick to fish'n'chips, which is reliable, after a recommendation by an earlier reviewer. Seating is idiosyncratic and I have seen tables moved around to accommodate large parties. One critique I have is the Muzak, which is a little more intrusive than average. In a restaurant of this type happy chatter would be the perfect background sound. I am OK with value for dollar but the $$ rating is fair. I happen to love the location but I'm a nut for Old Towns, ghost towns and brownfields. One can walk across the street to an asphalted trail on the riverbank and walk for miles if one wishes. A friend of mine plays in a blues jam on Sundays but I have not explored that aspect of this venue, which I think deserves to be approached as more than just a pub with food. read more

Calapooia is easily my favorite bar in Albany. It brings a comfortable divey feel without the gross factor like some places. The staff are always super nice and attentive. The outdoor seating is great in the summer or winter as they have patio heaters. Dogs are allowed (leashed) on the patio. I'm interested to see how things change with the new ownership, I hope they don't take away the Pooya Porter but I do hope the food menu expands. Highly recommend this place. This is our go to place for somewhat rowdy live music, a quick casual glass of wine or beer, a game of afternoon darts, a place just to hang out for a bit.
