I made it in after a dinner on a Thurs eve. I stopped to buy some beer to take home. I am into sours, fruit beer, selzetrs and they had a good selection. BUT, 4 regular beer cost me $30! Damn! Plus, their regulations stated that I needed to buy an 88 cent cookie to leave with the beer! THEN, they stated they had ran out of cookies. This was getting all to complicated for the purchase! Staff member was nice enough. Not her rules, right? So, I was charged anyways in case the manager looked at the slips and I was given a radler sample up top at the bar to replace the cookie. That sample would have been free anyways! LOL! Anyways, the inside bar area was nice enough. The outer area was just OK. I mean, you face a very busy street and all is concrete. Some picnic tables. 2 food trucks were out there that I have yet to try but they were closed for the night. The Beer Co. is very unassuming from the outside. You would not know it was a brew place unless someone told you about it. Would I go back? Sure, but will skip the beer to go. A shame as they were very good. Many brews brought in from other brew places too.

They've partnered up with some food trucks that park on their property. You can sit outside or inside the brewery and eat food from the food trucks and drink their beer. As of our most recent visit, they only had one food truck there (Ad Mare), but in the past they had more (Walking Tacos used to be there). There's free parking on-site, but it's limited.

No mean feat to keep the love alive during these unprecedented times! It was fun to go see what they had going on. There were several local businesses displaying their wares in the parking lot of the shopping plaza, including live music. They also had a restaurant / bar - which turned out to be a Big Rig outlet! Imagine 2 breweries in the same mall! Made me wonder if they're affiliated? - with an open patio out front, where you could eat what you purchased inside. After we had browsed and shopped around the parking lot a bit, we realized we had not seen the Small Pony outlet itself, although their shop faces the street, so we wandered over to the store. The shop is nicely set up, with an open view of the barrels containing sour beer. And the staff was informative and helpful. We tried a sample or 3 and purchased some beer to take home. After all, we want to do our part to support local! The afterthought is this: neither of us was familiar with "sour beer" before this event (which we had seen advertised in Facebook. See? Advertising works!) If you are not familiar with it either, I have a newsflash for you: it is really is sour! After trying the beer at home, we realized and confirmed it for ourselves that we are not really and truly fans of it. How unfortunate! What do you do with beer you are not fond of? I ended up using it in a beer batter to fry fish in, and VOILA! It was amazing in a beer batter! I will have to remember this.

Small Pony was something I discovered through some local online/Instagram beer communities, hence I…read morefind myself making quite a stretch of a trek to an industrial area of Kanata to visit. Their premise is straightforward: they only make sour beers, and they're all barrel aged. I enjoy sour beers and don't mind fruity beers, so I must be in a form of heaven. I showed up pretty early on a quiet weekday. They discussed their current fares in detail while allowing me to sample a few from their tap. I enjoyed a couple glasses and bought a couple more to go home. It was a great intimate experience out of this small brewery. Seems like they experiment quite a bit with various fruit and berry profiles and other things, and with a tint of fun. SMÜV in particular is a 'smoothie sour' and is certainly one of the most out-there kinds of beers that I've ever tried--so thick, bright in colour and pungent in mango aromas I wonder if I am actually drinking beer at all.
