Pretty good "bar" food and drinks. Big menu with a lot of different options including vegetarian. A lot of different options for beer, too. I got the truffle burger and it was good. Couldn't really taste the truffle, but the hamburger was cooked well and the bun was nice and soft. Each bite was really good and the burger didn't fall apart when trying to eat it. They also give you a lot of fries and also a side of beans or slaw. My buddies also said their food was good. Service was a bit slow and it was kind of dark in there, but overall, a decent place to get a lot of food and drinks. Came here for the beer originally which was great, but I have since been blown away by the food every time. The beer selection is wicked - something for everyone. I like the IPAs and the milk stout for less kick. Whether you are a beer expert or not sure what you like, they'll let you sample before committing to a pint. The surprising part is you can have a great meal too. I've had great fish and chips, sandwiches, pizza (tons of cheese!) and not just pub food here. Don't forget to grab some cans in their shop on the way out. Prices are lower than the liquor stores. read more

We dined in tonight at Big Rig, and i'm usually a high rater in general but with COVID going on, my standards for cleanliness and sanitization have increased. We had to get the waiter to replace our glasses because our glasses were still dirty, and our plates too when they arrived. The food was great! However, the service wasnt and neither was the cleanliness of the plates and glasses. I didnt get a picture of my glass, but i got one of my plate. We were first timers to Big Rig. Impressed! The service here was impeccable even though we sat in the lounge and the restaurant was busy enough for a Tues night! The red zinfandel wine I had was pricey but very good! $11/glass. The food was amazingly good. I had the appetizer Market Salad (huge) and the Thai curry mussels. TO DIE FOR! Hubby had the steak tacos and he loved each and every bite for the seasoning on the meat, the meat itself and the amazing salsa. Soft tortillas! It sells as an appy and he did not need to order anything else, he was satisfied! Our friend got the Market Salad and the salmon. WOW, it looked incredible and she said it was very good, served with fresh veg and white rice. She could not finish it, it was a lot of food! This restaurant has been open for a little while now - long enough that it's time we tried it out. Besides, it was date night and we needed something to do before the show began, and we decided to eat :-) We got here a bit early (4:45pm), as the show was at 7:00. It's a large open concept, which upon entry reminded me of the old Alice Fazooli's because there's a bar with brown wood, and wines in a wooden rack. There the comparison ends, though. This is a wide open space, with lots of large windows that face Iris Street, and there are several large screen TVs all around so that everyone can see them (without being overwhelmed). At the back of the restaurant, there's an enclosed area containing steaming vats where the beer is brewing. So, at least we know it's made right on site! And better still: you can order bottles to take home. I would say the space is big enough to accomodate a large group, too - if you ever needed to plan something like that. We were seated promptly, and the first thing we noticed was that the seats in the booths are cushy and comfy. The waiter took the time to tell us about the specials - 3 of them, including a chicken dish, lasagna and one other item - prefacing each description with "it's really good". But, since we had never been here before, we ended up chosing dinner items off the menu. My DH ordered battered fish and chips, and I requested butter chicken. This at least explains the variety of dishes offered on the menu! We knew they brewed their own beers here, so we each tried different ones. My DH got a lighter beer (didn't they call it a "blond"?!), and since I like a dark beer that's not too dense, I got the nut brown. We were both impressed - mine did not leave an aftertaste as some beers do. Next visit I want to try the one with the "chocolate undertones"... that sounded so intriguing! The food was really good - we were both impressed! Although I do have to say that they salt the fries beforehand, so check first before adding any more. I would go back. Need to try some other nifty things on the menu! UPDATE July 2013: Went again last night to celebrate hubby's birthday. And I just have to give this shout out that they offer an AWESOME thick crust pizza! I had the Chicken Pot Pie which was only ok - maybe a 3.5 star out of 5. Their lasagna is apparently excellent (this, even though the waitress tried to talk our guest out of ordering it?!) Two people ordered the General Tao's chicken and seemed to enjoy it as well. Whenever I go to Brewery, I only have 1 thing in mind... BEER. Big Red Brewery does have a good selection of different beer styles: 6 beers + 4 beers on rotation/seasonal. Taster came in 4, but they they are more than happy to accommodate us so we got a sample of every single beer on tap. Gold IPA Rideau Red Hefeweizen Byward Brown Session IPA Stud Stout Double Black IPA Dortmunder All brewed to style but nothing really outstanding. Good everyday beers for a neighbourhood brewery. I kind of wish I can find one like that in my hood! The space here is huge and they take reservations. Good for big group for casual drinks and pub style food. read more

Coming by one evening for supper with my sister and her brood, it wasn't quite nice enough to set up on the patio, so we were seated in the main dining  room area. It's a big place, and feels like they're going for the local chain kind of thing, with possible wider aspirations ala 3 Brasseurs.  They're pretty family friendly despite being a brewery, with lots of families there and my sister's kids being given crayons and activity sheets, and our server was impressively patient with them. The menu had a good amount of selection, with burgers and pizza being a focus. However, I went with their decadent turkey dinner waffles - roasted turkey, stuffing, Swiss cheese and cranberry sauce between two waffles. And an egg on it, naturally. Sweet potato fries on the side kept the quasi-holidays meal theme going. My food was an impressive sight, and the behemoth waffle sandwich was a definite knife and fork job. I held off on the syrup that came with it, and it was good without, getting plenty of moisture from the runny yolk of the egg and the cranberry sauce. It was all white meat, unfortunately, but it wasn't dry. The mild Swiss cheese was basically a non-entity with everything else that was going on, and should either be left off or replaced with a more flavourful cheese. I always enjoy stuffing, and it would be cool to see them do a stuffing waffle, even just open-faced, and slathered in gravy. Speaking of which, I'd much rather have had gravy than maple syrup, although the kids enjoyed dipping their sweet potato fries in it. This is why I'm the favourite uncle!  :D My sister's burger wasn't bad - your typical cowboy/western burger with onion rings and BBQ sauce. I usually find BBQ sauces too sweet, and this one was a bit better than most, but still not up my alley. My picky-eater nephew really enjoyed it though, so that was a big win.  While I may not be a fan of strip mall restaurants with generic designs and dreams of franchise grandeur, I understand the unfortunate need for them. It's better than taking the kids out to McDonald's, I get it. They could push the envelope a bit more on creativity, but on the whole our food was executed pretty well. I came on a Monday evening as I was running out of groceries at home and didn't feel like going to out to replenish my stock. The front door employee was super friendly and got me a booth, which was comfortable! I also have never been, so I was curious, as their menu seems to feature predominately comfort food! I started off with a beer flight (4 beers for $7.50), and chose all their seasonal beers. My favourite was definitely the grapefruit-infused one, which was called "Bongo", and they actually sell it at the restaurant too (only seasonal though)! It tasted very light and actually fruity, so it was super easy to drink. I actually got a pitcher afterwards too (why not, it's Monday)! As an app, I got the calamari, which was a good portion, and had sufficient seasoning. It wasn't too chewy, and the batter was nice and crisp. I chose the mac and cheese, because it had chicken AND bacon, AND white truffle oil...needless to say, it was super decadent and just what I wanted. Portions were large (well for $20 it better be, haha)! I wish they could add some more "innovative" dishes to their menu, as everything seemed pretty typical (but I guess that's what they do well). Although the food didn't stand out, the service did! I was served by an Asian woman, and she was super friendly and chatty. She even sat across on the booth seat to chat! Been to Big Rig a few times and everytime the service has been great. It is always a good atmosphere with good food. Today I tried the Colossal burger (burger with egg, bacon, ham, fried onions, peppers, mushrooms,cheddar, provolone with sweet BBQ sauce). I've had it once before and it was great, but tonight it was a bit dry. The burger patty was over cooked and not enough sauce. It was still good, but not as good as it could have been. Big Rig does their own ketchup as well, which I really like a lot, it has an amazing taste to it. I was here twice over the last month or two. First time was for breakfast on Sunday morning. It was fairly quiet. I had heard about their breakfast so I was little disappointed when I noticed how few choices we had. I feel like the food wasn't that great, at least not for the price. For breakfast, you are better off going to an actual breakfast place. For the same price you would have better food and a bigger portion. The second time was for dinner. I had one of their salads. The portion was good and the salad itself was crisp and fresh. I enjoyed the honey dressing and the fried cubed cheese that was in along with the other vegetables. I thought the price for the added grilled chicken breast was a bit much though it was cooked perfectly. I tried one of their ciders. It was pear, which I had never tried before. I liked it, it was great and I would order it again. Over-all, I feel like Big Rig is a bit over rated. It was loud for dinner on a Thursday night and we had to wait for a table. Came here for dinner yesterday and was surprised how busy it was for a Monday evening! *note - make sure to arrive a little early to secure s parking spot. The parking lot fills quickly and it is quite crowded. We were meeting guests from out of town who were passing through and thought they would enjoy the Big Rig Brewery experience. Luckily we made a reservation and good thing because there was quite a lineup of folks when we got there. This is a very popular place so reservations definitely recommended! Our guests each ordered a flight of big rig beers, the chocolate stout, red and the wheat ale being the favourites out of the four. They also have a moderately generous selection of other cocktails, wines and spirits to choose from in case you're not in the mood for beer. We were quickly seated and they had supplied a mini high chair for our friends' two year old as well as a colouring menu and crayons which were already ready. He loved them and started colouring happily right away. Also the kids menu has a variety of food items to choose from. Our table ordered the Crispy Calamari which was cooked perfectly. Crunchy and chewy as well as the Spiced Pop Cheese Curds to share. Very interesting and a big hit. I ordered the Grilled Steak and Avocado Salad which was cooked well. The flank steak was tasty. One of our friends ordered the BBQ Buffalo Chicken pizza which was done in a personal size. It looked very good. The Killer Bee Burger was also enjoyed by my partner, he really got his elbows in there to eat it as it was a little messy, but happily devoured. Finally, for dessert the Coconut Cream Pie and the Peanut Butter Cheesecake were both big hits! Overall the food and the company were good, as was the service. As I have not enjoyed meals here many years ago, I don't tend to go to Big Rig. My family and I were close by and very hungry, so dropped by today. It is spacious and clean, and the servers were terrific. Service was quick. The food was not very good. The nachos were overcooked, with shrovelled jalapenos, little cheese and little salsa. There could not have been more than twenty kernels of corn in the mix. My pork belly cheese sandwich was awful. Little taste, just a handful of grease. The fries were mediocre. My daughter's wings were also boring, not very tasty. Have not had a good meal there yet. Will not return. read more

My friend and I decided to visit Big Rig tonight for dinner. This was my second time visiting the restaurant and it was the first time for my friend. This time we sat in the nice comfy booths. Our waiter was very nice and took our drink orders within 5 min of us sitting down. I decided to try the Gouda chicken sandwich this time. It was amazing!! The chicken is crusted with Parmesan and topped with Gouda. The sandwich also has avocado (which I love), lettuce, tomato and really yummy chipotle mayo. I was worried the chipotle mayo would be overpowering in the sandwich but it was nicely balanced. It was served on a lightly toasted flat bread. It was delicious and quite a generous helping! I had to bring half of it home, but I definitely won't mind the leftovers tomorrow!! My friend had the smoked meat sandwich. She really enjoyed her meal and it looked yummy! 11 of us took two of our co-workers for lunch here. They were part of an unfortunate layoff from work and their last day is tomorrow. Anyway, I've been buying beer here in growlers since they opened but have never eaten here so I was really looking forward to it. We arrived at lunch hour, with reservations, and the place was packed. Our server was friendly and attentive. One of my co-workers ordered a plate or pulled pork nachos to share. It was huge and delicious. I thought the menu items were a little pricey in comparison to some major restaurant chains, but rest assured there's a reason. I ordered the jalapeño cream cheese (angus beef!) burger. It was pretty good. But what impressed me most was the portion size. It's almost as if they filled the remaining space on my plate with the side order. I had fries. Glancing at some of my co-workers' plates, they received the same generous portions. I love Big Rig's beer so I had I try their new black IPA. Again, no disappointment. We were there for maybe an hour and a half total, during a busy lunch time crowd, and at no time did it feel like we were waiting for anything so I'd have to say the overall service was pretty quick all things considered. My meal and two black IPAs came to around $32 before tip. I stopped at their "store" on the way out and picked up a couple of growlers of the black IPA and Belgian Blonde for enjoyment at home. I must say that prior to coming here I heard alot about how good this place was. My first time to eat was a few days prior to me adding this review. First off it they accommodate kids and during our visit we saw many families with young children. The restaurant itself is nice and at the very back is a very open and visible area for viewing which is where they brew their beer. Our server was iffy but he was ok after getting use to his monotone voice lol. I say iffy cause he made a crack about sitting near the brewery and not being beer drinkers. First off we didn't pick these tables your hostess sat us here and secondly didn't know you had to qualify to come eat here by being a beer drinker :). Food wise I started with the crispy deep fried pickles which were good. I must say though that after a couple, at least for me, they started getting to salty / sour. Another thing is for the price you only get like 5 pieces. I loaded on the ranch sauce that came with it. For my main meal I ordered the #4 which was a unique burger. Small mouths can forget about it you need to open huge to eat this burger. For an extra cost you can upgrade to sweet potatoe fries which I didn't. The fries were good and crispy reminding me of chip wagon fries. The burger was delicious but very greasy. If you can picture it its like having two grilled cheese sandwiches that make up the bun and a thick chuck of beef in the middle. Couple things. They have a beer ketchup which has some small amount of beer. Not that it would be a huge wrong doing to let your kids dip their fries in beer ketchup but you'd think it would be a given to offer and bring regular ketchup for the kids. Secondly the server was ready to cash us out forgetting the kids got a desert with their kids meal. It wasn't until we made a mention of it that they got their ice cream. Overall it was a good experience. I will say that I've heard many people recommend many things on their menu. For the beer drinkers and connoisseurs there have a big variety of brews for you to taste and enjoy. I'll admit that I'll probably come back and try something else on the menu. read more

Awful. Tried to support them today with my family by dining on the patio. Waited 40 minutes in 40-degree weather while 4 tables were completely empty and sanitized but the 2 waitresses just ignored us and spent most of the time inside the dining room. Many other guests showed up, saw that the service was basically non-existent, turned and left. For the record, we used to LOVE this place, but what a fiasco. Zero service and they couldn't care less. I get it. The conditions we're all under (especially frontline service workers) is intense, however, when families are looking to literally give you their money to try and help you out, at least provide the bare minimum service. And this is not a Karen or Ken review, I was legit embarrassed for the staff at how bad they were. We drove to Baseline instead and ate at Chances R. We were seated immediately and had the best service you could possibly ask for. Get it together Big Rig. Seriously. We've been here a number of times - it is, after all conveniently located in the immediate vicinity of IKEA, is just off the highway *and* has great beer. It's time to do a refresh on my review. We were there as part of a Yelp Elite event, and so were lucky enough to get a tour of the attached brewery and a wide sampling of the food. As *always* everything was great. A shout out to our waiter Dwayne who's charm and humour kept all of us laughing and happy. (I wish every restaurant had a Dwayne.) From past history I can say their burgers and pizza are worth ordering as is any of their beers. (My personal favorite so far is the Chocolate Stout.) Today we tried a few new things and they'll be added to my future orders too: Hummus Dip, Buffalo Chicken Dip and Poutine. (How had I avoided their poutine until know - that's a mystery. It was good!) Also good, but not something I'd typically order was the Edamame. The sauce drizzled on it was great - so if you like Edamame in general (I don't), this is also a great option. Consistency is a huge issue with this place. During the day, the customer service and speed of service is exceptional. To be honest, the quantity of food seems less than industry standard for a much higher price than average. I have no problem with very pricy bills so long as it is backed up by the product. Creative menu items certainly help the insultingly high prices. The beer is what makes this place great! If you're a beer connoisseur I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you simply appreciate a nice high quality local beer, you can't go wrong only ordering drinks with minimal appetizers. If you go late at night, don't waste your money!! The food speed of service is incredibly slow considering a lack of customers. The staff inappropriately prioritizes flirting with each other and goofing around in the back and closed off parts of the store that no one actually serves customers. Can take up to 30 minutes to get someone's attention to order a second beer with your spicy meal. Also, it's very common for the doors to be locked either staff members inside during posted business hours. You do need to pull the door with some force on a windy night. Having said this, me and my friends have been told by staff that they were closed 3-4 hours before the posted business hours. Management would do well to monitor the staff more closely late at night as it really is a stylish bar to get a good pint. read more

We ordered quick and got the 'colossal' burger with sweet potatoes fries & a salad with chicken. The burger was as described - massive, a ton of meat, and basically a heart attack on a bun. The fries were amazing, though. Seriously, some of the best sweet fries I've ever had. And they give you enough to feed 5 people. But of course you'll eat them all. Having read other reviews I was a bit apprehensive about going to Big Rig. Don't get me wrong, I love a good brewpub but the comments about the food and service left a lot to be desired. Regardless my girlfriend and I decided to trek out here on a Saturday night for some beer and pub fare and we were not disappointed. We arrived around 7:00 and the place was full, fortunately the wait wasn't long, and the bar is right next to the Maitre D stand (and within earshot) so we could pitch up at the bar and order beers while we waited. After about 15 minutes we got our table. We first ordered an appetizer of thai chili mussels which were most excellent while for main course I got an excellent Jambalaya. It had shrimp, lobster, and sausage in it with vegetables on a bed of rice. The sauce was really excellent and it had the right amount of spice. My girlfriend had a shrimp bowl, which was essentially a stir fry with shrimp and veggies that she really liked. The beer of is also excellent, I had a really good English Style Brown Ale called Byward Brown. It's quite smooth and malty with strong nutty and coffee flavours. My second was a HefeWeiss, for the uninitiated that is a German style wheat beer that had vanilla and banana notes, also a very tasty brew. My girlfriend had the Big Rig Gold, their flagship lager. That one wasn't nearly as good, I found it a bit bland and watery but it isn't a bad beer by any means, I would just recommend their other beers over it. The service was also good, although I found that it could be a bit sporadic at times. The best I can say is that they did their job professionally and courteously, but I wasn't super blown away by any means. This average service, along with the prices (which were kinda steep) costs Big Rig a 5 star rating, but I would definitely go back and would recommend it to others. read more
